Electrical and thermal transport in van der Waals magnets 2H-M$_x$TaS$_2$ (M = Mn, Co)

We report a detailed study of electrical and thermal transport properties in 2H-M$_x$TaS$_2$ (M = Mn, Co) magnets where M atoms are intercalated in the van der Waals gap. The intercalation induces ferromagentism with an easy-plane anisotropy in 2H-Mn$_x$TaS$_2$, but ferromagnetism with a strong uniaxial anisotropy in 2H-Co$_{0.22}$TaS$_2$, which finally evolves into a three-dimensional antiferromagnetism in 2H-Co$_{0.34}$TaS$_2$. Temperature-dependent electrical resistivity shows metallic behavior for all samples. Thermopower is negative in the whole temperature range for 2H-Co$_x$TaS$_2$, whereas the sign changes from negative to positive with increasing Mn for 2H-Mn$_x$TaS$_2$. The diffusive thermoelectric response dominates in both high- and low-temperature ranges for all samples. A clear kink in electrical resistivity, a weak anomaly in thermal conductivity, as well as a slope change in thermopower were observed at the magnetic transitions for 2H-Mn$_{0.28}$TaS$_2$ ($T_\textrm{c}$ $\approx$ 82 K) and 2H-Co$_{0.34}$TaS$_2$ ($T_\textrm{N}$ $\approx$ 36 K), respectively, albeit weaker for lower $x$ crystals. Co-intercalation promoted ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition is further confirmed by the Hall resistivity; the sign change of the ordinary Hall coefficient indicates a multi-band behavior in 2H-Co$_x$TaS$_2$.

Possible unconventional pairing in $(\text{Ca,Sr})_{3}(\text{Ir,Rh})_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$ superconductors revealed by controlling disorder

We study the evolution of temperature-dependent resistivity with controlled point-like disorder induced by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation in stoichiometric compositions of the "3-4-13" stannides, $(\text{Ca,Sr})_{3}(\text{Ir,Rh})_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$.Three of these cubic compounds exhibit a microscopic coexistence of charge-density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC), while $\text{Ca}_{3}\text{Rh}_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$ does not develop CDW order. As expected, the CDW transition temperature, $T_{\text{CDW}}$, is universally suppressed by irradiation in all three compositions. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}$, behaves in a more complex manner. In $\text{Sr}_{3}\text{Rh}_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$, it increases initially in a way consistent with a direct competition of CDW and SC, but quickly saturates at higher irradiation doses. In the other three compounds, $T_{c}$ is monotonically suppressed by irradiation. The strongest suppression is found in $\text{Ca}_{3}\text{Rh}_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$, which does not have CDW order. We further examine this composition by measuring the London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, from which we derive the superfluid density. The result unambiguously points to a weak-coupling, full single gap, isotropic superconducting state. Therefore, we must explain two seemingly incompatible experimental observations: a single isotropic superconducting gap and a significant suppression of $T_{c}$ by non-magnetic disorder. We conduct a quantitative theoretical analysis based on a generalized Anderson theorem which points to an unconventional multiband $s^{+-}$-pairing state where the sign of the order parameter is different on one (or a small subset) of the smaller Fermi surface sheets, but remains overall fully-gapped.

Evolution of lattice, spin, and charge properties across the phase diagram of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$

A Raman scattering study covering the entire substitution range of the FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ solid solution is presented. Data were taken as a function of sulfur concentration $x$ for $0\le x \le 1$, of temperature and of scattering symmetry. All type of excitations including phonons, spins and charges are analyzed in detail. It is observed that the energy and width of iron-related B$_{1g}$ phonon mode vary continuously across the entire range of sulfur substitution. The A$_{1g}$ chalcogenide mode disappears above $x=0.23$ and reappears at a much higher energy for $x=0.69$. In a similar way the spectral features appearing at finite doping in A$_{1g}$ symmetry vary discontinuously. The magnetic excitation centered at approximately 500 cm$^{-1}$ disappears above $x=0.23$ where the A$_{1g}$ lattice excitations exhibit a discontinuous change in energy. The low-energy mode associated with fluctuations displays maximal intensity at the nemato-structural transition and thus tracks the phase boundary.

Three-dimensional ferromagnetism and magnetotransport in van der Waals Mn-intercalated tantalum disufide

Van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets are an important class of materials for spintronics applications. The recent discovery of atomically vdW magnets CrI$_3$ and Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ has triggered a renaissance in the area of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. Herein we systematically studied 2H-Mn$_{0.28}$TaS$_2$ single crystal, a 2D vdW ferromagnet with $T_c$ $\sim$ 82.3 K and a large in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Mn $K$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy was measured to provide information on its electronic state and local atomic environment. The detailed magnetic isotherms measured in the vicinity of $T_c$ indicates that the spin coupling inside 2H-Mn$_{0.28}$TaS$_2$ is of a three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg-type coupled with the attractive long-range interaction between spins that decay as $J(r)\approx r^{-4.85}$. Both resistivity $ρ(T)$ and thermopower $S(T)$ exhibit anomalies near $T_c$, confirming that the hole-type transport carriers strongly interact with local moments. An unusual angle-dependent magnetoresistance is further observed, suggesting a possible field-induced novel magnetic structure.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ single crystals

We carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ single crystals. Mn and Te $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at $T_c$ $\sim$ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87\% at $T_c$ and relatively high value of thermopower up to $\sim$ 10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity $ρ(T)$ and thermopower $S(T)$ below 20 K, the large discrepancy between activation energy for resistivity $E_ρ$ and thermopower $E_S$ above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity $κ(T)$ of Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ is notably rather low, comparable to Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$, and is strongly suppressed in magnetic field across $T_c$, indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$.

Magnetic critical behavior and anomalous Hall effect in 2H-Co$_{0.22}$TaS$_{2}$ single crystals

We report ferromagnetism in 2H-Co$_{0.22}$TaS$_2$ single crystals where Co atoms are intercalated in the van der Waals gap, and a systematic study of its magnetic critical behavior in the vicinity of $T_c \sim 28$ K. The obtained critical exponents $β$ = 0.43(2), $γ$ = 1.15(1), and $δ= 3.54(1)$ fulfill the Widom scaling relation $δ= 1+γ/β$ and follow the scaling equation. This indicates that the spin coupling in 2H-Co$_{0.22}$TaS$_2$ is of three-dimensional Hersenberg type coupled with long-range magnetic interaction, and that the exchange interaction decays with distance as $J(r)\approx r^{-4.69}$. 2H-Co$_{0.22}$TaS$_2$ exhibits a weak temperature-dependent metallic behavior in resistivity and negative values of thermopower with dominant electron-type carriers, in which obvious anomalies were observed below $T_c$ as well as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The linear scaling behavior between the modified anomalous Hall resistivity $ρ_{xy}/μ_0H$ and longitudinal resistivity $ρ_{xx}^2M/μ_0H$ implies that the origin of AHE in 2H-Co$_{0.22}$TaS$_2$ should be dominated by the extrinsic side-jump mechanism.

Critical phenomena of the layered ferrimagnet Mn3Si2Te6 following proton irradiation

We examine the magnetic properties of the quasi 2D ferrimagnetic single crystal Mn3Si2Te6 (MST) through critical phenomena and magnetic entropy analysis in the easy axis (H || ab) as a function of proton irradiance. Employing a modified asymptotic analysis method, we find that upon proton irradiation the critical exponents do not fall into any particular universality class but lie close to mean field critical exponents (γ = 1, \b{eta} = 0.5). The presence of long-range interactions can be safely assumed for the pristine and irradiated cases of MST examined in this work. Further analysis on the effective spatial dimensionality reveal that MST remains at d = 3 under proton irradiation transitioning from an n = 1 spin dimensionality to n = 2 and n=3 for 1 x 10^15 and 5 x 10^15 H+/cm^2, indicating an XY interaction and a Heisenberg interaction, respectively. The pair (spin-spin) correlation function reveals an increase in magnetic correlations at the proton irradiance of 5 x 10^15 H+/cm^2. In conjunction, the maximum change in magnetic entropy obtained from isothermal magnetization at 3 T is the largest for 5 x 10^15 H+/cm^2 with a value of 2.45 J/kgK at T = 73.66 K, in comparison to 1.60 J/kgK for pristine MST at T = 73 K. Magnetic entropy derived from zero-field heat capacity does not show large deviations across the proton irradiated samples. This suggests that the antiferromagnetic coupling between the Mn sites is stable even after proton irradiation. Such result implies that magnetization is enhanced through a strengthening of the super-exchange interaction between Mn atoms mediated through Te rather than a weakening of the AFM component. Overall, our study finds that the magnetic interactions are manipulated the greatest when MST is irradiated at 5 x 10^15 H+/cm^2.

Probing charge density wave phases and the Mott transition in $1T$-TaS$_2$ by inelastic light scattering

We present a polarization-resolved, high-resolution Raman scattering study of the three consecutive charge density wave (CDW) regimes in $1T$-TaS$_2$ single crystals, supported by \textit{ab initio} calculations. Our analysis of the spectra within the low-temperature commensurate (C-CDW) regime shows $\mathrm{P3}$ symmetry of the system, thus excluding the previously proposed triclinic stacking of the "star-of-David" structure, and promoting trigonal or hexagonal stacking instead. The spectra of the high-temperature incommensurate (IC-CDW) phase directly project the phonon density of states due to the breaking of the translational invariance, supplemented by sizeable electron-phonon coupling. Between 200 and 352\,K, our Raman spectra show contributions from both the IC-CDW and the C-CDW phase, indicating their coexistence in the so-called nearly-commensurate (NC-CDW) phase. The temperature-dependence of the symmetry-resolved Raman conductivity indicates the stepwise reduction of the density of states in the CDW phases, followed by a Mott transition within the C-CDW phase. We determine the size of the Mott gap to be $Ω_{\rm gap}\approx 170-190$ meV, and track its temperature dependence.

Anomalous Hall effect in weak-itinerant ferrimagnet FeCr$_2$Te$_4$

We carried out a comprehensive study of electronic transport, thermal and thermodynamic properties in FeCr$_2$Te$_4$ single crystals. It exhibits bad-metallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below a weak-itinerant paramagentic-to-ferrimagnetic transition $T_c$ $\sim$ 123 K. The linear scaling between the anomalous Hall resistivity $ρ_{xy}$ and the longitudinal resistivity $ρ_{xx}$ implies that the AHE in FeCr$_2$Te$_4$ is most likely dominated by extrinsic skew-scattering mechanism rather than intrinsic KL or extrinsic side-jump mechanism, which is supported by our Berry phase calculations.

High Fermi velocities and small cyclotron masses in LaAlGe

We report quantum oscillation measurements of LaAlGe, a Lorentz-violating type-II Weyl semimetal with tilted Weyl cones. Very small quasiparticle masses and very high Fermi velocities were detected at the Fermi surface. Whereas three main frequencies have been observed, angular dependence of two Fermi surface sheets indicates possible two-dimensional (2D) character despite the absence of the 2D structural features such as van der Waals bonds. Such conducting states may offer a good platform for low-dimensional polarized spin current in magnetic RAlGe (R = Ce, Pr) materials.

Magnetic mixed valent semimetal EuZnSb$_2$ with Dirac states in the band structure

We report discovery of new antiferromagnetic semimetal EuZnSb$_2$, obtained and studied in the form of single crystals. Electric resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity indicate antiferromagnetic order of Eu with $T_N$ = 20 K. The effective moment of Eu$^{2+}$ inferred from the magnetization and specific heat measurement is 3.5 $μ_B$, smaller than the theoretical value of Eu$^{2+}$ due to presence of both Eu$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{2+}$. Magnetic field-dependent resistivity measurements suggest dominant quasi two dimensional Fermi surfaces whereas the first-principle calculations point to the presence of Dirac fermions. Therefore, EuZnSb$_2$ could represent the first platform to study the interplay of dynamical charge fluctuations, localized magnetic 4$f$ moments and Dirac states with Sb orbital character.

Low-Temperature Thermopower in CoSbS

We report giant thermopower S = 2.5 mV/K in CoSbS single crystals, a material that shows strong high-temperature thermoelectric performance when doped with Ni or Se. Changes of low temperature thermopower induced by magnetic field point to mechanism of electronic diffusion of carriers in the heavy valence band. Intrinsic magnetic susceptibility is consistent with the Kondo- Insulator-like accumulation of electronic states around the gap edges. This suggests that giant thermopower stems from temperature-dependent renormalization of the non-interacting bands and buildup of the electronic correlations on cooling.

Three-dimensional Fermi surface and small effective masses in Mo8Ga41

We report Fermi surface characteristics of Mo8Ga41, a two-gap superconductor with critical temperature Tc = 10 K, obtained from quantum oscillation measurements. Four major frequencies have been observed with relatively small quasiparticle masses. Angular dependence of major frequencies indicates three-dimensional Fermi surface sheets. This argues for a relatively isotropic superconducting state and, given its relatively high Tc, shows that a search for materials in this class could be of interest for superconducting wire applications.

Valence band electronic structure of the van der Waals ferromagnetic insulators: VI$_3$ and CrI$_3$

Ferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) insulators are of great scientific interest for their promising applications in spintronics. It has been indicated that in the two materials within this class, CrI$_3$ and VI$_3$, the magnetic ground state, the band gap, and the Fermi level could be manipulated by varying the layer thickness, strain or doping. To understand how these factors impact the properties, a detailed understanding of the electronic structure would be required. However, the experimental studies of the electronic structure of these materials are still very sparse. Here, we present the detailed electronic structure of CrI$_3$ and VI$_3$ measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our results show a band-gap of the order of 1 eV, sharply contrasting some theoretical predictions such as Dirac half-metallicity and metallic phases, indicating that the intra-atomic interaction parameter (U) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) were not properly accounted for in the calculations. We also find significant differences in the electronic properties of these two materials, in spite of similarities in their crystal structure. In CrI$_3$, the valence band maximum is dominated by the I 5{\it p}, whereas in VI$_3$ it is dominated by the V 3{\it d} derived states. Our results represent valuable input for further improvements in the theoretical modeling of these systems.

Three-dimensional Ising Ferrimagnetism of Cr-Fe-Cr trimers in FeCr2Te4

We carried out a comprehensive study of magnetic critical behavior in single crystals of ternary chalcogenide FeCr$_2$Te$_4$ that undergoes a ferrimagnetic transition below $T_c$ $\sim$ 123 K. Detailed critical behavior analysis and scaled magnetic entropy change indicate a second-order ferrimagentic transition. Critical exponents $β= 0.30(1)$ with $T_c = 122.4(5)$ K, $γ= 1.22(1)$ with $T_c = 122.8(1)$ K, and $δ= 4.24(2)$ at $T_c$ $\sim$ 123 K suggest that the spins approach three-dimensional Ising ($β$ = 0.325, $γ$ = 1.24, and $δ$ = 4.82) model coupled with the attractive long-range interactions between spins that decay as $J(r)\approx r^{-4.88}$. Our results suggest that the ferrimagnetism in FeCr$_2$Te$_4$ is due to itinerant ferromagnetism among the antiferromagnetically coupled Cr-Fe-Cr trimers.

Surface Conductivity in Antiferromagnetic Semiconductor CrSb$_2$

The contribution of bulk and surface to the electrical resistance along crystallographic \textit{b}- and \textit{c}-axes as a function of crystal thickness gives evidence for a temperature independent surface states in an antiferromagnetic narrow-gap semiconductor CrSb$_{2}$. ARPES shows a clear electron-like pocket at $Γ$-$Z$ direction which is absent in the bulk band structure. First-principles calculations also confirm the existence of metallic surface states inside the bulk gap. Whereas combined experimental probes point to enhanced surface conduction similar to topological insulators, surface states are trivial since CrSb$_2$ exhibits no band inversion.

Anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior in CrSbSe$_3$

We report anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior in quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnetic CrSbSe$_3$ single crystal. The maximum magnetic entropy change $-ΔS_M^{max}$ is 2.16 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ for easy $a$ axis (2.03 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ for hard $b$ axis) and the relative cooling power $RCP$ is 163.1 J kg$^{-1}$ for easy $a$ axis (142.1 J kg$^{-1}$ for hard $b$ axis) near $T_c$ with a magnetic field change of 50 kOe. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant $K_u$ is estimated to be 148.5 kJ m$^{-3}$ at 10 K, decreasing to 39.4 kJ m$^{-3}$ at 70 K. The rescaled $ΔS_M(T,H)$ curves along all three axes collapse onto a universal curve, respectively, confirming the second order ferromagnetic transition. Further critical behavior analysis around $T_c \sim$ 70 K gives that the critical exponents $β$ = 0.26(1), $γ$ = 1.32(2), and $δ$ = 6.17(9) for $H\parallel a$, while $β$ = 0.28(2), $γ$ = 1.02(1), and $δ$ = 4.14(16) for $H\parallel b$. The determined critical exponents suggest that the anisotropic magnetic coupling in CrSbSe$_3$ is strongly dependent on orientations of the applied magnetic field.

Anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior in CrCl$_3$

We report anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and magnetic critical behavior in van der Waals crystal CrCl$_3$. The maximum magnetic entropy change $-ΔS_M^{max} \sim 14.6$ J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and the relative cooling power $RCP \sim 340.3$ J kg$^{-1}$ near $T_c$ with a magnetic field change of 5 T are much larger when compared to CrI$_{3}$ or CrBr$_{3}$. The rescaled $ΔS_M(T,H)$ curves collapse onto a universal curve, confirming the second order ferromagnetic transition. Further critical behavior analysis around $T_c$ presents a set of critical exponents $β$ = 0.28(1) with $T_c$ = 19.4(2) K, $γ$ = 0.89(1) with $T_c$ = 18.95(8) K, and $δ$ = 4.6(1) at $T_c$ = 19 K, which are close to those of theoretical tricritical mean field model.
