Insulating and metallic spin glass in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-δ-y}$Ni$_{y}$Se$_{2}$ (0.06 $\leq$ $y$ $\leq$ 1.44) single crystals

We report electron doping effects by Ni in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-δ-y}$Ni$_{y}$Se$_{2}$ (0.06 $\leq$ $y$ $\leq$ 1.44) single crystal alloys. A rich ground state phase diagram is observed. Small amount of Ni ($\sim$ 4\%) suppressed superconductivity below 1.8 K, inducing insulating spin glass magnetic ground state for higher Ni content. With further Ni substitution, metallic resistivity is restored. For high Ni concentration in the lattice the unit cell symmetry is high symmetry $I4/mmm$ with no phase separation whereas both $I4/m + I4/mmm$ space groups were detected in the phase separated crystals when concentration of Ni $<$ Fe. The absence of superconductivity coincides with the absence of crystalline Fe vacancy order.

Large thermopower in the antiferromagnetic semiconductor BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$

We report electrical and thermal transport properties of Mn-based material BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure. The resistivity of the antiferromagnetic BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ shows a metal-semiconductor transition at $\sim 80$ K with decreasing temperature. Correspondingly, the thermopower $S$ shows a peak at the same temperature, approaching ~150 $μ$V/K. With increasing temperature $S$ decreases to about 125 $μ$V/K at the room temperature. The magnetic field enhances the peak value to 210 $μ$V/K. The Hall resistivity reveals an abrupt change of the carrier density close to the metal-semiconductor transition temperature.

Large linear magnetoresistance and magnetothermopower in layered SrZnSb$_2$

We report the large linear magnetoresistance ($\sim 300\%$ in 9 T field at 2 K) and magnetothermopower in layered SrZnSb$_2$ crystal with quasi-two-dimensional Sb layers. A crossover from the semiclassical parabolic field dependent magnetoresistance to linear field dependent magnetoresistance with increasing magnetic field is observed. The magnetoresistance behavior can be described very well by combining the semiclassical cyclotron contribution and the quantum limit magnetoresistance. Magnetic field also enhances the thermopower. Our results can be well understood by the magnetotransport of Dirac states in the bulk band structure.

Large magnetothermopower and Fermi surface reconstruction in Sb$_2$Te$_2$Se

We report the magnetoresistance, magnetothermopower and quantum oscillation study of Sb$_2$Te$_2$Se single crystal. The in-plane transverse magnetoresistance exhibits a crossover at a critical field $B^*$ from semiclassical weak-field $B^2$ dependence to the high-field unsaturated linear magnetoresistance which persists up to the room temperature. The low-temperature Seebeck coefficient is negative in zero field contrary to the positive Hall resistivity, indicating the multiband effect. The magnetic field induced the sign reversion of the Seebeck coefficient between 2 K and 150 K, . The quantum oscillation of crystals reveals the quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Fermi surface. These effects are possibly attributed to the large Fermi surface which touches Brillouin zone boundary to becomes quasi-2D and the variation in the chemical potential induced by the magnetic field.

Quasi-two-dimensional Dirac fermions and quantum magnetoresistance in LaAgBi$_2$

We report quasi-two-dimensional Dirac fermions and quantum magnetoresistance in LaAgBi$_2$. The band structure shows several narrow bands with nearly linear energy dispersion and Dirac-cone-like points at the Fermi level. The quantum oscillation experiments revealed one quasi-two-dimensional Fermi pocket and another complex pocket with small cyclotron resonant mass. The in-plane transverse magnetoresistance exhibits a crossover at a critical field $B^*$ from semiclassical weak-field $B^2$ dependence to the high-field unsaturated linear magnetoresistance which is attributed to the quantum limit of the Dirac fermions. Our results suggest the existence of quasi 2D Dirac fermions in rare-earth based layered compounds with two-dimensional double-sized Bi square nets, similar to (Ca,Sr)MnBi$_{2}$, irrespective of magnetic order.

Sustained phase separation and spin glass in Co-doped K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$ single crystals

We present Co substitution effects in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y-z}$Co$_{z}$Se$_{2}$ (0.06 $\leq$ $z$ $\leq$ 1.73) single crystal alloys. By 3.5\% of Co doping superconductivity is suppressed whereas phase separation of semiconducting K$_{2}$Fe$_{4}$Se$_{5}$ and superconducting/metallic K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ is still present. We show that the arrangement and distribution of superconducting phase (stripe phase) is connected with the arrangement of K, Fe and Co atoms. Semiconducting spin glass is found in proximity to superconducting state, persisting for large Co concentrations. At high Co concentrations ferromagnetic metallic state emerges above the spin glass. This is coincident with changes of the unit cell, arrangement and connectivity of stripe conducting phase.

Electronic Griffiths Phase in the Te - Doped Semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$

We report on the emergence of an Electronic Griffiths Phase (EGP) in the doped semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$, predicted for disordered insulators with random localized moments in the vicinity of a metal-insulator transition (MIT). Magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic measurements of Fe(Sb$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$)$_{2}$ single crystals show signatures of disorder-induced non-Fermi liquid behavior and a Wilson ratio expected for strong electronic correlations. The EGP states are found on the metallic boundary, between the insulating state ($x = 0$) and a long-range albeit weak magnetic order ($x \geq 0.075$).

Enhanced Thermoelectric Power and Electronic Correlations in RuSe$_2$

We report the electronic structure, electric and thermal transport properties of Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$Se$_2$ ($x \leq 0.2$). RuSe$_2$ is a semiconductor that crystallizes in a cubic pyrite unit cell. The Seebeck coefficient of RuSe$_2$ exceeds -200 $μ$V/K around 730 K. Ir substitution results in the suppression of the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient, suggesting the removal of the peaks in density of states near the Fermi level. Ru$_{0.8}$Ir$_{0.2}$Se$_{2}$ shows a semiconductor-metal crossover at about 30 K. The magnetic field restores the semiconducting behavior. Our results indicate the importance of the electronic correlations in enhanced thermoelectricity of RuSb$_{2}$.

Two-dimensional Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 antiferromagnet

We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 single crystals. YbMnBi2 is a layered material with anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase and small cyclotron mass indicate the presence of quasi two dimensional Dirac fermions. Quantum oscillations in Hall resistivity suggest the presence of both electron and hole parts of the Fermi surface whereas the Berry phase suggests spin-orbit coupling.

Electron-hole asymmetry, Dirac fermions, and quantum magnetoresistance in BaMnBi2

We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in BaMnBi2 single crystals. BaMnBi2 is a layered bad metal with highly anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase, small cyclotronmass, and the first-principles band structure calculations indicate the presence of Dirac fermions in Bi square nets. Quantum oscillations in the Hall channel suggest the presence of both electron and hole pockets, whereas Dirac and parabolic states coexist at the Fermi level.

Heat transport study of field-tuned quantum criticality in CeIrIn5

The in-plane electrical resistivity, rho, and thermal conductivity, kappa, of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn5 were measured down to 40mK in magnetic fields up to 11 T applied along the c axis. For all fields above Hc2=4T of filamentary superconductivity, we find that the ratio of heat and charge conductivities in the T to 0 limit obeys the Wiedemann-Franz law, kappa/T=L0/rho, where L0 = 2.45*10^-8 WOhmK^-2 is the Sommerfeld value of the Lorenz number. The temperature-dependent parts of both the electrical and thermal resistivity,w = T/L0 kappa, follow the functional dependence expected for the Fermi liquid theory of metals with rho - rho_0 = AT^2, w - w_0 = BT^2, with rho0 = w0 and B ~ 2A. The coefficient B does not show a significant field dependence even upon approaching Hc2 = 0.4 T of the bulk superconducting state. The weak response to the magnetic field is in stark contrast with the behavior found in the closely related CeCoIn5, in which the field-tuned quantum critical point coincides with Hc2. The value of the electron-electron mass enhancement, as judged by the A and B coefficients, is about one order of magnitude reduced in CeIrIn5 as compared to CeCoIn5 (in spite of the fact that the zero field gamma_0 in CeIrIn5 is twice as large as gamma_0 in CeCoIn5), which suggests that the material is significantly farther away from the magnetic quantum critical point at bulk Hc2 and at all of the studied fields. A suppressed Kadowaki-Woods ratio in CeIrIn5 compared to CeCoIn5 suggests a notably more localized nature of f electrons in the compound.

Observation of Dirac-like band dispersion in LaAgSb$_2$

We present a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations study of the electronic structure of LaAgSb$_2$ in the entire first Brillouin zone. We observe a Dirac-cone-like structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level formed by the crossing of two linear energy bands, as well as the nested segments of Fermi surface pocket emerging from the cone. Our ARPES results show the close relationship of the Dirac cone to the charge-density-wave ordering, providing consistent explanations for exotic behaviors in this material.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$

We report on high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$. Frequency-field diagrams of ESR excitations are measured for different orientations of magnetic fields up to 25 T. We show that the substantial zero-field energy gap, $Δ\approx9.5$ K, observed in the low-temperature excitation spectrum of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ [Zvyagin $et~al.$, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 077206 (2014)], is present well above $T_N$. Noticeably, the transition into the long-range magnetically ordered phase does not significantly affect the size of the gap, suggesting that even below $T_N$ the high-energy spin dynamics in Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ is determined by short-range-order spin correlations. The experimental data are compared with results of model spin-wave-theory calculations for spin-1/2 triangle-lattice antiferromagnet.

Single to multi quasiparticle excitations in the itinerant helical magnet CeRhIn$_{5}$

CeRhIn$_{5}$ is an itinerant magnet where the Ce$^{3+}$ spins order in a simple helical phase. We investigate the spin excitations and observe sharp spin-waves parameterized by a nearest neighbor exchange $J_{RKKY}$=0.88 $\pm$ 0.05 meV. At higher energies, the spin fluctuations are heavily damped where single quasiparticle excitations are replaced by a momentum and energy broadened continuum constrained by kinematics of energy and momentum conservation. The delicate energy balance between localized and itinerant characters results in the breakdown of the single quasiparticle picture in CeRhIn$_{5}$.

Strong enhancement of conventional superconductivity near a quantum critical point of (Ca,Sr)_3Ir_4Sn_13

Competing electronic states are found in the large majority of unconventional superconductors, including high-Tc cuprates, iron based superconductors and many heavy fermion systems. The complex interplay is reflected in phase diagrams as a function of doping or other tuning parameters involving besides superconducting other phases (often magnetic) and quantum critical points. Superconductivity is also found in the vicinity of charge density wave (CDW) order in phase diagrams reminiscent of superconductivity mediated by magnetic fluctuations. There is however less knowledge about the interplay of superconductivity and CDW compared to the magnetic analogon. Here we report about microscopic studies by muon spin rotation as a function of pressure of the Ca_3Ir_4Sn_13 and Sr_3Ir_4Sn_13 cubic compounds, which display superconductivity and a structural phase transition associated with the formation of a CDW. We find a strong enhancement of the superfluid density and of the coupling strength above a pressure of about 1.6 GPa giving direct evidence of the presence of a quantum critical point separating a superconducting phase coexisting with CDW from a pure superconducting phase. The superconducting order parameter in both phases are found to have the same s-wave symmetry. In spite of the conventional phonon-mediated BCS character of this compound, the dependence of the effective superfluid density on the critical temperature puts this system in the "Uemura" plot close to unconventional superconductors.

Universal Heat Conduction in Ce1-xYbxCoIn5: Evidence for Robust Nodal d-wave Superconducting Gap

In heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$ system, Yb doping was reported to cause a possible change from nodal $d$-wave superconductivity to a fully gapped $d$-wave molecular superfluid of composite pairs near $x \approx$ 0.07 (nominal value $x_{nom}$ = 0.2). Here we present systematic thermal conductivity measurements on Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$ ($x$ = 0.013, 0.084, and 0.163) single crystals. The observed finite residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is insensitive to Yb doping, verifying the universal heat conduction of nodal $d$-wave superconducting gap in Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$. Similar universal heat conduction is also observed in CeCo(In$_{1-y}$Cd$_y$)$_5$ system. These results reveal robust nodal $d$-wave gap in CeCoIn$_5$ upon Yb or Cd doping.

Electronic structure of Ce2RhIn8 2D heavy Fermion system studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study heavy fermion superconductor Ce2RhIn8. The Fermi surface is rather complicated and consists of several hole and electron pock- ets. We do not observe kz dispersion of Fermi sheets, which is consistent with 2D character of the electronic structure. Comparison of the ARPES data and band structure calculations points to a localized picture of f electrons. Our findings pave the way for understanding the transport and thermodynamical properties of this material.

Structural contributions to the pressure-tuned charge-density-wave to superconductor transition in ZrTe3: Raman scattering studies

Superconductivity evolves as functions of pressure or doping from charge-ordered phases in a variety of strongly correlated systems, suggesting that there may be universal characteristics associated with the competition between superconductivity and charge order in these materials. We present an inelastic light (Raman) scattering study of the structural changes that precede the pressure-tuned charge-density-wave (CDW) to superconductor transition in one such system, ZrTe3. In certain phonon bands, we observe dramatic linewidth reductions that accompany CDW formation, indicating that these phonons couple strongly to the electronic degrees of freedom associated with the CDW. The same phonon bands, which represent internal vibrations of ZrTe3 prismatic chains, are suppressed at pressures above ~10 kbar, indicating a loss of long-range order within the chains, specifically amongst intrachain Zr-Te bonds. These results suggest a distinct structural mechanism for the observed pressure-induced suppression of CDW formation and provide insights into the origin of pressure-induced superconductivity in ZrTe3.
