Anisotropic giant magnetoresistance in NbSb2

The extremely large transverse magnetoreistance (the magnetoresistant ratio $\sim 1.3\times10^5\%$ in 2 K and 9 T field, and $4.3\times 10^6\%$ in 0.4 K and 32 T field, without saturation), and the metal-semiconductor crossover induced by magnetic field, are reported in NbSb$_2$ single crystal with electric current parallel to the $b$-axis. The metal-semiconductor crossover is preserved when the current is along the $ac$-plane but the magnetoresistant ratio is significantly suppressed. The sign reversal of the Hall resistivity in the field close to the crossover point, and the electronic structure calculation reveals the coexistence of a small number of holes with very high mobility and a large number of electrons with low mobility. These effects are attributed to the change of the Fermi surface induced by the magnetic field.

Nonmetallic Low-Temperature Normal State of K0.70Fe1.46Se1.85Te0.15

The normal-state in-plane resistivity below the zero-field superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and the upper critical field Hc2 were measured by suppressing superconductivity in pulsed magnetic fields for K0.70Fe1.46Se1.85Te0.15. The normal-state resistivity $ρ_{ab}$ is found to increase logarithmically with decrasing temperature as $\frac{T}{T_c}\rightarrow 0$. Similar to granular metals, our results suggest that a superconductor - insulator transition below zero-field T$_{c}$ may be induced in high magnetic fields. This is related to the intrinsic real-space phase-separated states common to all inhomogeneous superconductors.

$^{119}$Sn-NMR investigations on superconducting Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$: Evidence for multigap superconductivity

We report bulk superconductivity (SC) in Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ by means of $^{119}$Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Two classical signatures of BCS superconductivity in spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$), namely the Hebel-Slichter coherence peak just below the $T_c$ and the exponential decay in the superconducting phase, are evident. The noticeable decrease of $^{119}$Sn Knight shift below $T_c$ indicates spin-singlet superconductivity. The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) is convincingly described by the multigap isotropic superconducting gap. Present NMR experiments do not witness any sign of enhanced spin fluctuations in the normal state.

Direct Evidence for a Magnetic f-electron Mediated Cooper Pairing Mechanism of Heavy Fermion Superconductivity in CeCoIn5

To identify the microscopic mechanism of heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is an unresolved challenge in quantum matter studies; it may also relate closely to finding the pairing mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. Magnetically mediated Cooper pairing has long been the conjectured basis of heavy-fermion superconductivity but no direct verification of this hypothesis was achievable. Here, we use a novel approach based on precision measurements of the heavy-fermion band structure using quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging, to reveal quantitatively the momentum-space (k-space) structure of the f-electron magnetic interactions of CeCoIn5. Then, by solving the superconducting gap equations on the two heavy-fermion bands $E_k^{α,β}$ with these magnetic interactions as mediators of the Cooper pairing, we derive a series of quantitative predictions about the superconductive state. The agreement found between these diverse predictions and the measured characteristics of superconducting CeCoIn5, then provides direct evidence that the heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is indeed mediated by the f-electron magnetism.

Evolution of the superconducting energy gap structure concomitant with Fermi surface reconstruction in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5

The London penetration depth, $λ(T)$ was measured in single crystals of Ce$_{1-x}R_x$CoIn$_5$, $R$=La, Nd and Yb down to 50~mK ($T_c/T \sim$50) using a tunnel-diode resonator. In the cleanest samples $Δλ(T)$ is best described by the power law, $Δλ(T) \propto T^{n}$, with $n \sim 1$, consistent with line nodes. Substitutions of Ce with La, Nd and Yb lead to similar monotonic suppressions of $T_c$, however the effects on $Δλ(T)$ differ. While La and Nd doping results in an increase of the exponent to $n \sim 2$, as expected for a dirty nodal superconductor, Yb doping leads to $n > 3$, inconsistent with nodes, suggesting a change from nodal to nodeless superconductivity where Fermi surface topology changes were reported, implying that the nodal structure and Fermi surface topology are closely linked.

Superconducting and magnetic properties of Sr3Ir4Sn13

Magnetization and muon spin relaxation or rotation (muSR) measurements have been performed to study the superconducting and magnetic properties of Sr3Ir4Sn13. From magnetization measurements the lower and upper critical fields of Sr3Ir4Sn13 are found to be 81(1) Oe and 14.4(2) kOe, respectively. Zero-field muSR data show no sign of any magnetic ordering or weak magnetism in Sr3Ir4Sn13. Transverse-field muSR measurements in the vortex state provided the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth. The dependence of penetration depth with temperature is consistent with the existence of single s-wave energy gap in the superconducting state of Sr3Ir4Sn13 with a gap value of 0.82(2) meV at absolute zero temperature. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature is 291(3) nm. The gap to Tc ratio is 2.1(1), indicates that Sr3Ir4Sn13 should be considered as a strong-coupling superconductor.

Direct determination of exchange parameters in Cs2CuBr4 and Cs2CuCl4: high-field ESR studies

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ with distorted triangular-lattice structures are studied by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above. In the magnetically saturated phase, quantum fluctuations are fully suppressed, and the spin dynamics is defined by ordinary magnons. This allows us to accurately describe the magnetic excitation spectra in both materials and, using the harmonic spin-wave theory, to determine their exchange parameters. The viability of the proposed method was proven by applying it to Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$, yielding $J/k_B=4.7(2)$ K, $J'/k_B=1.42(7)$ K [$J'/J\simeq 0.30$] and revealing good agreement with inelastic neutron-scattering results. For the isostructural Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$, we obtain $J/k_B=14.9(7)$ K, $J'/k_B=6.1(3)$ K, [$J'/J\simeq 0.41$], providing exact and conclusive information on the exchange couplings in this frustrated spin system.

Phonon and magnetic dimer excitations in Fe-based S=2 spin ladder compound BaFe$_2$Se$_2$O

Raman scattering spectra of new Fe-based S=2 spin ladder compound BaFe$_2$Se$_2$O are measured in a temperature range between 15 K and 623 K. All six A$_{1g}$ and two B$_{1g}$ Raman active modes of BaFe$_2$Se$_2$O, predicted by the factor-group analysis, have been experimentally observed at energies that are in a rather good agreement with the lattice dynamics calculation. The antiferromagnetic long-range spin ordering in BaFe$_2$Se$_2$O below $T_N$=240 K leaves a fingerprint both in the A$_{1g}$ and B$_{1g}$ phonon mode linewidth and energy. In the energy range between 400 and 650 cm$^{-1}$ we have observed magnetic excitation related structure in the form of magnon continuum, with the peaks corresponding to the singularities in the one dimensional density of magnon states. The onset value of magnetic continuum (2$Δ_{S}$) is found at about 437 cm$^{-1}$ at 15 K. The magnetic continuum disappears at about 623 K, which lead us to conclude that the short-range magnetic ordering in BaFe$_2$Se$_2$O exists apparently up to 2.6$T_N$.

Low superfluid density and possible multi-gap superconductivity in BiS2-based layered superconductor Bi4O4S3

The magnetic penetration depth as a function of temperature in Bi4O4S3 was studied by muon-spin-spectroscopy measurements. The superfluid density of Bi4O4S3 is found to be very low. The dependence of penetration depth on temperature possibly suggests the existence of two s-wave type energy gaps with the zero-temperature values of 0.93(3) and 0.09(4) meV. The upturn in the temperature dependence of the upper critical field close to Tc further supports multi-gap superconductivity in Bi4O4S3. The presence of two superconducting energy gaps is consistent with theoretical and other experimental studies. However, a single-gap s-wave model fit with a gap of 0.88(2) meV can not be ruled out completely. The value of penetration depth at T = 0 K is estimated to be of 861(17) nm, one of the largest of all known layered superconductors, reflecting a very low superfluid density.

Structural phase transition induced by van Hove singularity in 5d transition metal compound IrTe2

Comprehensive studies of the electronic states of Ir 5d and Te 5p have been performed to elucidate the origin of the structural phase transition in IrTe2 by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. While no considerable changes are observed in the configuration of the Ir 5d electronic states across the transition, indicating that the Ir 5d orbitals are not involved in the transition, we reveal a van Hove singularity at the Fermi level (EF) related to the Te px+py orbitals, which is removed from EF at low temperatures. The wavevector connecting the adjacent saddle points is consistent with the in-plane projection of the superstructure modulation wavevector. These results can be qualitatively understood with the Rice-Scott "saddle-point" mechanism, while effects of the lattice distortions need to be additionally involved.

New layered fluorosulfide SrFBiS2

We have synthesized a new layered BiS$_{2}$-based compound SrFBiS2. This compound has similar structure to BiS2. It is built up by stacking up SrF layers and NaCl-type BiS2 layers alternatively along the c axis. Electric transport measurement indicates that SrFBiS2 is a semiconductor. Thermal transport measurement shows that SrFBiS2 has a small thermal conductivity and large Seebeck coefficient. First principle calculations are in agreement with experimental results and show that SrFBiS2 is very similar to LaOBiS2 which becomes superconductor with F doping. Therefore, SrFBiS2 may be a parent compound of new superconductors.

Wiedemann-Franz law and non-vanishing temperature scale across the field-tuned quantum critical point of YbRh2Si2

The in-plane thermal conductivity kappa(T) and electrical resistivity rho(T) of the heavy-fermion metal YbRh2Si2 were measured down to 50 mK for magnetic fields H parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c axis, through the field-tuned quantum critical point, Hc, at which antiferromagnetic order ends. The thermal and electrical resistivities, w(T) and rho(T), show a linear temperature dependence below 1 K, typical of the non-Fermi liquid behavior found near antiferromagnetic quantum critical points, but this dependence does not persist down to T = 0. Below a characteristic temperature T* ~ 0.35 K, which depends weakly on H, w(T) and rho(T) both deviate downward and converge in the T = 0 limit. We propose that T* marks the onset of short-range magnetic correlations, persisting beyond Hc. By comparing samples of different purity, we conclude that the Wiedemann-Franz law holds in YbRh2Si2, even at Hc, implying that no fundamental breakdown of quasiparticle behavior occurs in this material. The overall phenomenology of heat and charge transport in YbRh2Si2 is similar to that observed in the heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn5, near its own field-tuned quantum critical point.

Superconductivity in Ir1-xRhxTe2 (0<=x<=0.3)

We report superconductivity, physical and structural properties of Ir1-xRhxTe2 (0<=x<=0.3). Superconducting transition with maximum Tc~2.6 K appears when the doping content of Rh x is in between 0.15 and 0.3. Further increasing the content of Rh will suppress the superconductivity. On the other hand, the high-temperature structural transition is suppressed gradually as Rh is incorporated into the lattice, eventually vanishing at x=0.2. These results imply competing relationship between structural transition and superconductivity. The isovalent ionic substitution of Rh into Ir has different effects on physical properties when compared to the isovalent anionic substitution of Se into Te, in which the structural transition is enhanced with Se substitution. It indicates the changes of structural parameters such as ionic size and electronegativity of elements will also have important effects on the evolution of physical properties in IrTe2.

Imaging Cooper Pairing of Heavy Fermions in CeCoIn5

The Cooper pairing mechanism of heavy-fermion superconductors, while long hypothesized as due to spin fluctuations, has not been determined. It is the momentum space (k-space) structure of the superconducting energy gap delta(k) that encodes specifics of this pairing mechanism. However, because the energy scales are so low, it has not been possible to directly measure delta(k) for any heavy-fermion superconductor. Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging, a proven technique for measuring the energy gaps of high-Tc superconductors, has recently been proposed as a new method to measure delta(k) in heavy-fermion superconductors, specifically CeCoIn5. By implementing this method, we immediately detect a superconducting energy gap whose nodes are oriented along k||(+-1, +-1)pi/a0 directions. Moreover, we determine the complete k-space structure of the delta(k) of a heavy-fermion superconductor. For CeCoIn5, this novel information includes: the complex band structure and Fermi surface of the hybridized heavy bands, the fact that highest magnitude delta(k) opens on a high-k band so that gap nodes occur at quite unanticipated k-space locations, and that the Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference patterns are most consistent with dx2-y2 gap symmetry. The availability of such quantitative heavy band- and gap-structure data will be critical in identifying the microscopic mechanism of heavy fermion superconductivity in this material, and perhaps in general.

Observation of an in-plane vortex lattice transition in the multiband superconductor 2H-NbSe2 using scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We report real-space evidence for an in-plane vortex lattice (VL) transition in the multiband superconductor 2H-NbSe2, observed by laterally imaging subsurface vortices with scanning tunneling spectroscopy. With magnetic field applied || ab-surface up to 6.5 T at 300 mK, spatial maps of the zero-bias conductance revealed a stripe pattern whose dominant periodicity showed a discrete shift near 0.7 T. The stripes can be interpreted as the surface projection of a distorted hexagonal VL that undergoes a first-order reorientation transition. This transition occurs for field || [100] but not [110], and is correlated with the multigap characteristics seen in the heat capacity and thermal transport data. These results implicate the multiband pairing of 2H-NbSe2 in the VL transition we observed.

Physical properties of KxNi2-ySe2 single crystals

We have synthesized K0.95(1)Ni1.86(2)Se2 single crystals. The single crystals contain K and Ni deficiencies not observed in KNi2Se2 polycrystals. Unlike KNi2Se2 polycrystals, the superconductivity is absent in single crystals. The detailed physical property study indicates that the K0.95Ni1.86Se2 single crystals exhibit Fermi liquid behavior with heavy-fermion-like characteristics. Transition from the high temperature local charge density wave state to heavy fermion state below T ~ 30 K results in an enhancement of electron-like carrier density whereas magnetic susceptibility shows little anisotropy and suggests presence of both itinerant and localized Ni orbitals.

Electronic thermoelectric power factor and metal-insulator transition in FeSb2

We show that synthesis-induced Metal -Insulator transition (MIT) for electronic transport along the orthorombic c axis of FeSb$_{2}$ single crystals has greatly enhanced electrical conductivity while keeping the thermopower at a relatively high level. By this means, the thermoelectric power factor is enhanced to a new record high S$^{2}$$σ$ $\sim$ 8000 $μ$WK$^{-2}$cm$^{-1}$ at 28 K. We find that the large thermopower in FeSb$_{2}$ can be rationalized within the correlated electron model with two bands having large quasiparaticle disparity, whereas MIT is induced by subtle structural differences. The results in this work testify that correlated electrons can produce extreme power factor values.

Magnetism in La2O3(Fe1-xMnx)2Se2 tuned by Fe/Mn ratio

We report the evolution of structural and magnetic properties in La2O3(Fe1-xMnx)2Se2. Heat capacity and bulk magnetization indicate an increased ferromagnetic component of the long-range magnetic order and possible increased degree of frustration. Atomic disorder on Fe(Mn) sites suppresses the temperature of the long-range order whereas intermediate alloys show a rich magnetic phase diagram.
