Families of quasi-exactly solvable extensions of the quantum oscillator in curved spaces

We introduce two new families of quasi-exactly solvable (QES) extensions of the oscillator in a $d$-dimensional constant-curvature space. For the first three members of each family, we obtain closed-form expressions of the energies and wavefunctions for some allowed values of the potential parameters using the Bethe ansatz method. We prove that the first member of each family has a hidden sl(2,$\mathbb{R}$) symmetry and is connected with a QES equation of the first or second type, respectively. One-dimensional results are also derived from the $d$-dimensional ones with $d \ge 2$, thereby getting QES extensions of the Mathews-Lakshmanan nonlinear oscillator.

Extended Nikiforov-Uvarov method, roots of polynomial solutions, and functional Bethe ansatz method

For applications to quasi-exactly solvable Schrödinger equations in quantum mechanics, we establish the general conditions that have to be satisfied by the coefficients of a second-order differential equation with at most $k+1$ singular points in order that this equation has particular solutions which are $n$th-degree polynomials. In a first approach, we extend the Nikiforov-Uvarov method, which was devised to deal with hypergeometric-type equations (i.e., for $k=2$), and show that the conditions involve $k-2$ integration constants. In a second approach, we consider the functional Bethe ansatz method in its most general form. Comparing the two approaches, we prove that under the assumption that the roots of the polynomial solutions are real and distinct, the $k-2$ integration constants of the extended Nikiforov-Uvarov method can be expressed as linear combinations of monomial symmetric polynomials in those roots, corresponding to partitions into no more than two parts.

Quantum oscillator and Kepler-Coulomb problems in curved spaces: deformed shape invariance, point canonical transformations, and rational extensions

The quantum oscillator and Kepler-Coulomb problems in $d$-dimensional spaces with constant curvature are analyzed from several viewpoints. In a deformed supersymmetric framework, the corresponding nonlinear potentials are shown to exhibit a deformed shape invariance property. By using the point canonical transformation method, the two deformed Schrödinger equations are mapped onto conventional ones corresponding to some shape-invariant potentials, whose rational extensions are well known. The inverse point canonical transformations then provide some rational extensions of the oscillator and Kepler-Coulomb potentials in curved space. The oscillator on the sphere and the Kepler-Coulomb potential in a hyperbolic space are studied in detail and their extensions are proved to be consistent with already known ones in Euclidean space. The partnership between nonextended and extended potentials is interpreted in a deformed supersymmetric framework. Those extended potentials that are isospectral to some nonextended ones are shown to display deformed shape invariance, which in the Kepler-Coulomb case is enlarged by also translating the degree of the polynomial arising in the rational part denominator.

Novel exactly solvable Schrödinger equations with a position-dependent mass in multidimensional spaces obtained from duality

A novel exactly solvable Schrödinger equation with a position-dependent mass (PDM) describing a Coulomb problem in $D$ dimensions is obtained by extending the known duality relating the quantum $d$-dimensional oscillator and $D$-dimensional Coulomb problems in Euclidean spaces for $D = (d+2)/2$. As an intermediate step, a mapping between a quantum $d$-dimensional nonlinear oscillator of Mathews-Lakshmanan type (or oscillator in a space of constant curvature) and a quantum $D$-dimensional Coulomb-like problem in a space of nonconstant curvature is derived. It is finally reinterpreted in a PDM background.

An update on the classical and quantum harmonic oscillators on the sphere and the hyperbolic plane in polar coordinates

A simple derivation of the classical solutions of a nonlinear model describing a harmonic oscillator on the sphere and the hyperbolic plane is presented in polar coordinates. These solutions are then related to those in cartesian coordinates, whose form was previously guessed. In addition, the nature of the classical orthogonal polynomials entering the bound-state radial wavefunctions of the corresponding quantum model is identified.

Ladder operators for solvable potentials connected with exceptional orthogonal polynomials

Exceptional orthogonal polynomials constitute the main part of the bound-state wavefunctions of some solvable quantum potentials, which are rational extensions of well-known shape-invariant ones. The former potentials are most easily built from the latter by using higher-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM) or Darboux method. They may in general belong to three different types (or a mixture of them): types I and II, which are strictly isospectral, and type III, for which k extra bound states are created below the starting potential spectrum. A well-known SUSYQM method enables one to construct ladder operators for the extended potentials by combining the supercharges with the ladder operators of the starting potential. The resulting ladder operators close a polynomial Heisenberg algebra (PHA) with the corresponding Hamiltonian. In the special case of type III extended potentials, for this PHA the k extra bound states form k singlets isolated from the higher excited states. Some alternative constructions of ladder operators are reviewed. Among them, there is one that combines the state-adding and state-deleting approaches to type III extended potentials (or so-called Darboux-Crum and Krein-Adler transformations) and mixes the k extra bound states with the higher excited states. This novel approach can be used for building integrals of motion for two-dimensional superintegrable systems constructed from rationally-extended potentials.

Generalized nonlinear oscillators with quasi-harmonic behaviour: classical solutions

The classical nonlinear oscillator, proposed by Mathews and Lakshmanan in 1974 and including a position-dependent mass in the kinetic energy term, is generalized in two different ways by adding an extra term to the potential. The solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equation are shown to exhibit richer behaviour patterns than those of the original nonlinear oscillator.

Rational extensions of the trigonometric Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potential based on para-Jacobi polynomials

The possibility for the Jacobi equation to admit in some cases general solutions that are polynomials has been recently highlighted by Calogero and Yi, who termed them para-Jacobi polynomials. Such polynomials are used here to build seed functions of a Darboux-Bäcklund transformation for the trigonometric Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potential. As a result, one-step regular rational extensions of the latter depending both on an integer index $n$ and on a continuously varying parameter $λ$ are constructed. For each $n$ value, the eigenstates of these extended potentials are associated with a novel family of $λ$-dependent polynomials, which are orthogonal on $\left] -1,1\right[ $.

Extending Romanovski polynomials in quantum mechanics

Some extensions of the (third-class) Romanovski polynomials (also called Romanovski/pseudo-Jacobi polynomials), which appear in bound-state wavefunctions of rationally-extended Scarf II and Rosen-Morse I potentials, are considered. For the former potentials, the generalized polynomials satisfy a finite orthogonality relation, while for the latter an infinite set of relations among polynomials with degree-dependent parameters is obtained. Both types of relations are counterparts of those known for conventional polynomials. In the absence of any direct information on the zeros of the Romanovski polynomials present in denominators, the regularity of the constructed potentials is checked by taking advantage of the disconjugacy properties of second-order differential equations of Schrödinger type. It is also shown that on going from Scarf I to Scarf II or from Rosen-Morse II to Rosen-Morse I potentials, the variety of rational extensions is narrowed down from types I, II, and III to type III only.

New ladder operators for a rational extension of the harmonic oscillator and superintegrability of some two-dimensional systems

New ladder operators are constructed for a rational extension of the harmonic oscillator associated with type III Hermite exceptional orthogonal polynomials and characterized by an even integer $m$. The eigenstates of the Hamiltonian separate into $m+1$ infinite-dimensional unitary irreducible representations of the corresponding polynomial Heisenberg algebra. These ladder operators are used to construct a higher-order integral of motion for two superintegrable two-dimensional systems separable in cartesian coordinates. The polynomial algebras of such systems provide for the first time an algebraic derivation of the whole spectrum through their finite-dimensional unitary irreducible representations.

Bohr Hamiltonian with deformation-dependent mass term for the Kratzer potential

The Deformation Dependent Mass (DDM) Kratzer model is constructed by considering the Kratzer potential in a Bohr Hamiltonian, in which the mass is allowed to depend on the nuclear deformation, and solving it by using techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM), involving a deformed shape invariance condition. Analytical expressions for spectra and wave functions are derived for separable potentials in the cases of gamma-unstable nuclei, axially symmetric prolate deformed nuclei, and triaxial nuclei, implementing the usual approximations in each case. Spectra and B(E2) transition rates are compared to experimental data. The dependence of the mass on the deformation, dictated by SUSYQM for the potential used, moderates the increase of the moment of inertia with deformation, removing a main drawback of the model.

Two-step rational extensions of the harmonic oscillator: exceptional orthogonal polynomials and ladder operators

The type III Hermite $X_m$ exceptional orthogonal polynomial family is generalized to a double-indexed one $X_{m_1,m_2}$ (with $m_1$ even and $m_2$ odd such that $m_2 > m_1$) and the corresponding rational extensions of the harmonic oscillator are constructed by using second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The new polynomials are proved to be expressible in terms of mixed products of Hermite and pseudo-Hermite ones, while some of the associated potentials are linked with rational solutions of the Painlevé IV equation. A novel set of ladder operators for the extended oscillators is also built and shown to satisfy a polynomial Heisenberg algebra of order $m_2-m_1+1$, which may alternatively be interpreted in terms of a special type of $(m_2-m_1+2)$th-order shape invariance property.

Exceptional orthogonal polynomials and new exactly solvable potentials in quantum mechanics

In recent years, one of the most interesting developments in quantum mechanics has been the construction of new exactly solvable potentials connected with the appearance of families of exceptional orthogonal polynomials (EOP) in mathematical physics. In contrast with families of (Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite) classical orthogonal polynomials, which start with a constant, the EOP families begin with some polynomial of degree greater than or equal to one, but still form complete, orthogonal sets with respect to some positive-definite measure. We show how they may appear in the bound-state wavefunctions of some rational extensions of well-known exactly solvable quantum potentials. Such rational extensions are most easily constructed in the framework of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM), where they give rise to a new class of translationally shape invariant potentials. We review the most recent results in this field, which use higher-order SUSYQM. We also comment on some recent re-examinations of the shape invariance condition, which are independent of the EOP construction problem.

Revisiting (quasi-)exactly solvable rational extensions of the Morse potential

The construction of rationally-extended Morse potentials is analyzed in the framework of first-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The known family of extended potentials $V_{A,B,{\rm ext}}(x)$, obtained from a conventional Morse potential $V_{A-1,B}(x)$ by the addition of a bound state below the spectrum of the latter, is re-obtained. More importantly, the existence of another family of extended potentials, strictly isospectral to $V_{A+1,B}(x)$, is pointed out for a well-chosen range of parameter values. Although not shape invariant, such extended potentials exhibit a kind of `enlarged' shape invariance property, in the sense that their partner, obtained by translating both the parameter $A$ and the degree $m$ of the polynomial arising in the denominator, belongs to the same family of extended potentials. The point canonical transformation connecting the radial oscillator to the Morse potential is also applied to exactly solvable rationally-extended radial oscillator potentials to build quasi-exactly solvable rationally-extended Morse ones.

Rationally-extended radial oscillators and Laguerre exceptional orthogonal polynomials in kth-order SUSYQM

A previous study of exactly solvable rationally-extended radial oscillator potentials and corresponding Laguerre exceptional orthogonal polynomials carried out in second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics is extended to $k$th-order one. The polynomial appearing in the potential denominator and its degree are determined. The first-order differential relations allowing one to obtain the associated exceptional orthogonal polynomials from those arising in a ($k-1$)th-order analysis are established. Some nontrivial identities connecting products of Laguerre polynomials are derived from shape invariance.

Higher-order SUSY, exactly solvable potentials, and exceptional orthogonal polynomials

Exactly solvable rationally-extended radial oscillator potentials, whose wavefunctions can be expressed in terms of Laguerre-type exceptional orthogonal polynomials, are constructed in the framework of $k$th-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics, with special emphasis on $k=2$. It is shown that for $μ=1$, 2, and 3, there exist exactly $μ$ distinct potentials of $μ$th type and associated families of exceptional orthogonal polynomials, where $μ$ denotes the degree of the polynomial $g_μ$ arising in the denominator of the potentials.

Bohr Hamiltonian with deformation-dependent mass term for the Davidson potential

Analytical expressions for spectra and wave functions are derived for a Bohr Hamiltonian, describing the collective motion of deformed nuclei, in which the mass is allowed to depend on the nuclear deformation. Solutions are obtained for separable potentials consisting of a Davidson potential in the beta variable, in the cases of gamma-unstable nuclei, axially symmetric prolate deformed nuclei, and triaxial nuclei, implementing the usual approximations in each case. The solution, called the Deformation Dependent Mass (DDM) Davidson model, is achieved by using techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM), involving a deformed shape invariance condition. Spectra and B(E2) transition rates are compared to experimental data. The dependence of the mass on the deformation, dictated by SUSYQM for the potential used, reduces the rate of increase of the moment of inertia with deformation, removing a main drawback of the model.
