Comment on `Supersymmetry, PT-symmetry and spectral bifurcation'

We demonstrate that the recent paper by Abhinav and Panigrahi entitled `Supersymmetry, PT-symmetry and spectral bifurcation' [Ann.\ Phys.\ 325 (2010) 1198], which considers two different types of superpotentials for the PT-symmetric complexified Scarf II potential, fails to take into account the invariance under the exchange of its coupling parameters. As a result, they miss the important point that for unbroken PT-symmetry this potential indeed has two series of real energy eigenvalues, to which one can associate two different superpotentials. This fact was first pointed out by the present authors during the study of complex potentials having a complex $sl(2)$ potential algebra.

Some Properties of an Infinite Family of Deformations of the Harmonic Oscillator

In memory of Marcos Moshinsky, who promoted the algebraic study of the harmonic oscillator, some results recently obtained on an infinite family of deformations of such a system are reviewed. This set, which was introduced by Tremblay, Turbiner, and Winternitz, consists in some Hamiltonians $H_k$ on the plane, depending on a positive real parameter $k$. Two algebraic extensions of $H_k$ are described. The first one, based on the elements of the dihedral group $D_{2k}$ and a Dunkl operator formalism, provides a convenient tool to prove the superintegrability of $H_k$ for odd integer $k$. The second one, employing two pairs of fermionic operators, leads to a supersymmetric extension of $H_k$ of the same kind as the familiar Freedman and Mende super-Calogero model. Some connection between both extensions is also outlined.

Chiral super-Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz Hamiltonians and their dynamical superalgebra

The family of Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz (TTW) Hamiltonians $H_k$ on a plane, corresponding to any positive real value of $k$, is shown to admit another ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric extension than that previously introduced by the present author. This new extension is of the same kind as that considered by D'Hoker and Vinet in the study of magnetic monopoles and is characterized by the fact that all the irreducible representations of the corresponding ${\rm osp}(2/2, \R)$ dynamical superalgebra are atypical lowest-weight state ones. The new supersymmetric Hamiltonians may be referred to as chiral super-TTW Hamiltonians, the role of chirality being played here by the fermion number parity operator.

Comments on dihedral and supersymmetric extensions of a family of Hamiltonians on a plane

For any odd $k$, a connection is established between the dihedral and supersymmetric extensions of the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz Hamiltonians $H_k$ on a plane. For this purpose, the elements of the dihedral group $D_{2k}$ are realized in terms of two independent pairs of fermionic creation and annihilation operators and some interesting trigonometric identities are demonstrated.

An update on PT-symmetric complexified Scarf II potential, spectral singularities and some remarks on the rationally-extended supersymmetric partners

The $\cal PT$-symmetric complexified Scarf II potential $V(x)= - V_1 \sech^{2}x + {\rm i} V_2 \sech x \tanh x$, $V_1>0$ , $V_{2}\neq 0$ is revisited to study the interplay among its coupling parameters. The existence of an isolated real and positive energy level that has been recently identified as a spectral singularity or zero-width resonance is here demonstrated through the behaviour of the corresponding wavefunctions and some property of the associated pseudo-norms is pointed out. We also construct four different rationally-extended supersymmetric partners to $V(x)$, which are $\cal PT$-symmetric or complex non-$\cal PT$-symmetric according to the coupling parameters range. A detailed study of one of these partners reveals that SUSY preserves the $V(x)$ spectral singularity existence.

N=2 supersymmetric extension of the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz Hamiltonians on a plane

The family of Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz Hamiltonians $H_k$ on a plane, corresponding to any positive real value of $k$, is shown to admit a ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric extension of the same kind as that introduced by Freedman and Mende for the Calogero problem and based on an ${\rm osp}(2/2, \R) \sim {\rm su}(1,1/1)$ superalgebra. The irreducible representations of the latter are characterized by the quantum number specifying the eigenvalues of the first integral of motion $X_k$ of $H_k$. Bases for them are explicitly constructed. The ground state of each supersymmetrized Hamiltonian is shown to belong to an atypical lowest-weight state irreducible representation.

Superintegrability of the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz quantum Hamiltonians on a plane for odd $k$

In a recent FTC by Tremblay {\sl et al} (2009 {\sl J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} {\bf 42} 205206), it has been conjectured that for any integer value of $k$, some novel exactly solvable and integrable quantum Hamiltonian $H_k$ on a plane is superintegrable and that the additional integral of motion is a $2k$th-order differential operator $Y_{2k}$. Here we demonstrate the conjecture for the infinite family of Hamiltonians $H_k$ with odd $k \ge 3$, whose first member corresponds to the three-body Calogero-Marchioro-Wolfes model after elimination of the centre-of-mass motion. Our approach is based on the construction of some $D_{2k}$-extended and invariant Hamiltonian $\chh_k$, which can be interpreted as a modified boson oscillator Hamiltonian. The latter is then shown to possess a $D_{2k}$-invariant integral of motion $\cyy_{2k}$, from which $Y_{2k}$ can be obtained by projection in the $D_{2k}$ identity representation space.

Exchange operator formalism for an infinite family of solvable and integrable quantum systems on a plane

The exchange operator formalism in polar coordinates, previously considered for the Calogero-Marchioro-Wolfes problem, is generalized to a recently introduced, infinite family of exactly solvable and integrable Hamiltonians $H_k$, $k=1$, 2, 3,..., on a plane. The elements of the dihedral group $D_{2k}$ are realized as operators on this plane and used to define some differential-difference operators $D_r$ and $D_φ$. The latter serve to construct $D_{2k}$-extended and invariant Hamiltonians $\chh_k$, from which the starting Hamiltonians $H_k$ can be retrieved by projection in the $D_{2k}$ identity representation space.

Bohr Hamiltonian with deformation-dependent mass term

The Bohr Hamiltonian describing the collective motion of atomic nuclei is modified by allowing the mass to depend on the nuclear deformation. Exact analytical expressions are derived for spectra and wave functions in the case of a gamma-unstable Davidson potential, using techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Numerical results in the Xe-Ba region are discussed.

Composite system in deformed space with minimal length

For composite systems made of $N$ different particles living in a space characterized by the same deformed Heisenberg algebra, but with different deformation parameters, we define the total momentum and the center-of-mass position to first order in the deformation parameters. Such operators satisfy the deformed algebra with new effective deformation parameters. As a consequence, a two-particle system can be reduced to a one-particle problem for the internal motion. As an example, the correction to the hydrogen atom $n$S energy levels is re-evaluated. Comparison with high-precision experimental data leads to an upper bound of the minimal length for the electron equal to $3.3\times 10^{-18} {\rm m}$. The effective Hamiltonian describing the center-of-mass motion of a macroscopic body in an external potential is also found. For such a motion, the effective deformation parameter is substantially reduced due to a factor $1/N^2$. This explains the strangely small result previously obtained for the minimal length from a comparison with the observed precession of the perihelion of Mercury. From our study, an upper bound of the minimal length for quarks equal to $2.4\times 10^{-17}{\rm m}$ is deduced, which appears close to that obtained for electrons.

Isospectrality of conventional and new extended potentials, second-order supersymmetry and role of PT symmetry

We develop a systematic approach to construct novel completely solvable rational potentials. Second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics dictates the latter to be isospectral to some well-studied quantum systems. $\cal PT$ symmetry may facilitate reconciling our approach to the requirement that the rationally-extended potentials be singularity free. Some examples are shown.

Exceptional orthogonal polynomials, exactly solvable potentials and supersymmetry

We construct two new exactly solvable potentials giving rise to bound-state solutions to the Schrödinger equation, which can be written in terms of the recently introduced Laguerre- or Jacobi-type $X_1$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials. These potentials, extending either the radial oscillator or the Scarf I potential by the addition of some rational terms, turn out to be translationally shape invariant as their standard counterparts and isospectral to them.

Quasi-Hermitian supersymmetric extensions of a non-Hermitian oscillator Hamiltonian and of its generalizations

A harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian augmented by a non-Hermitian \pt-symmetric part and its su(1,1) generalizations, for which a family of positive-definite metric operators was recently constructed, are re-examined in a supersymmetric context. Quasi-Hermitian supersymmetric extensions of such Hamiltonians are proposed by enlarging su(1,1) to a ${\rm su}(1,1/1) \sim {\rm osp}(2/2, \R)$ superalgebra. This allows the construction of new non-Hermitian Hamiltonians related by similarity to Hermitian ones. Some examples of them are reviewed.

Oscillator-Morse-Coulomb mappings and algebras for constant or position-dependent mass

The bound-state solutions and the su(1,1) description of the $d$-dimensional radial harmonic oscillator, the Morse and the $D$-dimensional radial Coulomb Schrödinger equations are reviewed in a unified way using the point canonical transformation method. It is established that the spectrum generating su(1,1) algebra for the first problem is converted into a potential algebra for the remaining two. This analysis is then extended to Schrödinger equations containing some position-dependent mass. The deformed su(1,1) construction recently achieved for a $d$-dimensional radial harmonic oscillator is easily extended to the Morse and Coulomb potentials. In the last two cases, the equivalence between the resulting deformed su(1,1) potential algebra approach and a previous deformed shape invariance one generalizes to a position-dependent mass background a well-known relationship in the context of constant mass.

A complex periodic QES potential and exceptional points

We show that the complex $\cal PT$-symmetric periodic potential $V(x) = - ({\rm i} ξ\sin 2x + N)^2$, where $ξ$ is real and $N$ is a positive integer, is quasi-exactly solvable. For odd values of $N \ge 3$, it may lead to exceptional points depending upon the strength of the coupling parameter $ξ$. The corresponding Schrödinger equation is also shown to go over to the Mathieu equation asymptotically. The limiting value of the exceptional points derived in our scheme is consistent with known branch-point singularities of the Mathieu equation.

Quadratic algebras and position-dependent mass Schrödinger equations

During recent years, exact solutions of position-dependent mass Schrödinger equations have inspired intense research activities, based on the use of point canonical transformations, Lie algebraic methods or supersymmetric quantum mechanical techniques. Here we highlight the interest of another approach to such problems, relying on quadratic algebras. We illustrate this point by constructing spectrum generating algebras for a class of $d$-dimensional radial harmonic oscillators with $d\ge2$ (including the one-dimensional oscillator on the line via some minor changes) and a specific mass choice. This provides us with a counterpart of the well-known su(1,1) Lie algebraic approach to the constant-mass oscillators.

Spectrum generating algebras for position-dependent mass oscillator Schrodinger equations

The interest of quadratic algebras for position-dependent mass Schrödinger equations is highlighted by constructing spectrum generating algebras for a class of d-dimensional radial harmonic oscillators with $d \ge 2$ and a specific mass choice depending on some positive parameter $α$. Via some minor changes, the one-dimensional oscillator on the line with the same kind of mass is included in this class. The existence of a single unitary irreducible representation belonging to the positive-discrete series type for $d \ge 2$ and of two of them for d=1 is proved. The transition to the constant-mass limit $α\to 0$ is studied and deformed su(1,1) generators are constructed. These operators are finally used to generate all the bound-state wavefunctions by an algebraic procedure.

Non-Hermitian oscillator Hamiltonian and su(1,1): a way towards generalizations

The family of metric operators, constructed by Musumbu {\sl et al} (2007 {\sl J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} {\bf 40} F75), for a harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian augmented by a non-Hermitian $\cal PT$-symmetric part, is re-examined in the light of an su(1,1) approach. An alternative derivation, only relying on properties of su(1,1) generators, is proposed. Being independent of the realization considered for the latter, it opens the way towards the construction of generalized non-Hermitian (not necessarily $\cal PT$-symmetric) oscillator Hamiltonians related by similarity to Hermitian ones. Some examples of them are reviewed.
