Spin polarization of light atoms in jellium: Detailed electronic structures

We revisit the problem of the spontaneous magnetization of an {\em sp} impurity atom in a simple metal host. The main features of interest are: (i) Formation of the spherical spin density/charge density wave around the impurity; (ii) Considerable decrease in the size of the pseudoatom in the spin-polarized state as compared with the paramagnetic one, and (iii) Relevance of the electron affinity of the isolated atom to this spin polarization, which is clarified by tracing the transformation of the pseudoatom into an isolated negative ion in the low-density limit of the enveloping electron gas.

Low scale Seesaw model and Lepton Flavor Violating Rare B Decays

We study lepton flavor number violating rare B decays, $b \to s l_h^{\pm} l_l^{\mp}$, in a seesaw model with low scale singlet Majorana neutrinos motivated by the resonant leptogenesis scenario. The branching ratios of inclusive decays $ b \to s l_h^{\pm} \bar{l_l}^{\mp} $ with two almost degenerate singlet neutrinos at TeV scale are investigated in detail. We find that there exists a class of seesaw model in which the branching fractions of $ b \to s τμ$ and $τ\to μγ$ can be as large as $10^{-10}$ and $10^{-9}$ within the reach of Super B factories, respectively, without being in conflict with neutrino mixings and mass squared difference of neutrinos from neutrino data, invisible decay width of $Z$ and the present limit of $Br(μ\to e γ)$.

Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis: SPA Convention and Project

High-precision analyses of supersymmetry parameters aim at reconstructing the fundamental supersymmetric theory and its breaking mechanism. A well defined theoretical framework is needed when higher-order corrections are included. We propose such a scheme, Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis SPA, based on a consistent set of conventions and input parameters. A repository for computer programs is provided which connect parameters in different schemes and relate the Lagrangian parameters to physical observables at LHC and high energy e+e- linear collider experiments, i.e., masses, mixings, decay widths and production cross sections for supersymmetric particles. In addition, programs for calculating high-precision low energy observables, the density of cold dark matter (CDM) in the universe as well as the cross sections for CDM search experiments are included. The SPA scheme still requires extended efforts on both the theoretical and experimental side before data can be evaluated in the future at the level of the desired precision. We take here an initial step of testing the SPA scheme by applying the techniques involved to a specific supersymmetry reference point.

Quark-Lepton Complementarity with Renormalization Effects through Threshold Corrections

The recent experimental measurements of the solar neutrino mixing angle $θ_{sol}$ and the Cabibbo mixing angle $θ_C$ reveal a surprising relation, $ θ_{sol}+θ_C \simeq \fracπ{4} $. We review that while this empirical relation has been interpreted as a support of the idea of grand unification, it may be merely accidental in the sense that reproducing the relation at a low energy in the framework of grand unification may depend strongly on the renormalization effects whose size can vary with the choice of parameter space. We note that the lepton mixing matrix derived from quark-lepton unification can lead to a shift of the complementarity relation at low energy. While the renormalization group effects generally lead to additive contribution on top of the shift, we show that the threshold corrections which may exist in some intermediate scale new physics such as supersymmetric standard model can diminish it, so we can achieve the complementarity relation at a low energy.

Are deviation from bi-maximal mixing and none-zero U_{e3} related to non-degeneracy of heavy Majorana neutrinos?

We propose a scenario that the mass splitting between the first generation of the heavy Majorana neutrino and the other two generations of degenerate heavy neutrinos in the seesaw framework is responsible for the deviation of the solar mixing angle from the maximal mixing, while keeping the maximal mixing between the tau and muon neutrinos as it is. On top of the scenario, we show that the tiny breaking of the degeneracy of the two heavy Majorana neutrinos leads to the non-zero small mixing angle $U_{e3}$ in the PMNS matrix and the little deviation of the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle from the maximal mixing.

Hierarchical Mass Structure of Fermions in Warped Extra Dimension

The warped bulk standard model has been studied in the Randall-Sundrum background on $S^1/\Z\times\Z'$ interval with the bulk gauge symmetry $SU(3)\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$. With the assumption of no large cancellation between the fermion flavor mixing matrices, we present a simple analytic method to determine the bulk masses of standard model fermions in the almost universal bulk Yukawa coupling model. We also predict $U_{e3}$ element of MNS matrix to be near the experimental upper bound when the neutrino masses are of Dirac type.

Is $D^{+}_{sJ}(2632)$ the first radial excitation of $D_{s}^{*}(2112)$?

We present a quantitative analysis of the $D^{+}_{sJ}(2632)$ observed by SELEX mainly focusing on the assumption that $D^{+}_{sJ}(2632)$ is the first radial excitation of the $1^{-}$ ground state $D^{*}_{s}(2112)$. By solving the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter equation, we obtain the mass $2658\pm 15$ MeV for the first excited state, which is about 26 MeV heavier than the experimental value $2632\pm 1.7$ MeV. By means of PCAC and low-energy theorem we calculate the transition matrix elements and obtain the decay widths: $Γ(D^{+}_{sJ}\to D^{+}_sη)=4.07\pm 0.34$ MeV, $Γ(D^{+}_{sJ}\to D^{0}K^{+}) \simeq Γ(Γ(D^{+}_{sJ}\to D^{+}K^{0})=8.9\pm 1.2$ MeV, and the ratio $Γ(D^{+}_{sJ}\to D^{0}K^{+})/Γ(D^{+}_{sJ}\to D^{+}_{s}η)=2.2\pm 0.2$ as well. This ratio is quite different from the SELEX data $0.14\pm 0.06$. The summed decay width of those three channels is approximately 21.7 MeV, already larger than the observed bound for the full width ($\leq 17$ MeV). Furthermore, assuming $D_{sJ}^+(2632)$ is $1^{-}$ state, we also explore the possibility of $S-D$ wave mixing to explain the SELEX observation. Based on our analysis, we suspect that it is too early to conclude that $D^{+}_{sJ}(2632)$ is the first radial excitation of the $1^{-}$ ground state $D^{*}_{s}(2112)$. More precise measurements of the relative ratios and the total decay width are urgently required especially for $S-D$ wave mixing.

Probing the radion-Higgs mixing at photon colliders

In the Randall-Sundrum model, the radion-Higgs mixing is weakly suppressed by the effective electroweak scale. A novel feature of the gravity-scalar mixing would be a sizable three-point vertex of $\grav$-$h$-$ϕ$. We explore the potential of photon colliders, achieved by the laser backscattering technique, in probing the radion-Higgs mixing via the associated production of the radion with the Higgs boson. The advantage of photon colliders is the capability of adjusting the polarization of the incoming photons such that the signal of the spin-2 graviton exchange can be largely enhanced. The enhancement factor is shown to be about 5, except for small-$ξ$ region. We also study the corresponding backgrounds step-by-step in detail.

A Critical Study of the B -> K πPuzzle

In the light of new experimental results on B -> K pi decays, we critically study the decay processes B -> K pi in a phenomenological way. Using the quark diagram approach and the currently available data, we determine the allowed values of the relevant theoretical parameters, corresponding to the electroweak (EW) penguin, the color-suppressed tree contribution, etc. In order to find the most likely values of the parameters in a statistically reliable way, we use the chi^2 minimization technique. Our result shows that the current data for B to K pi decays strongly indicate (large) enhancements of both the EW penguin and the color-suppressed tree contributions. In particular, the color-suppressed tree effect needs to be enhanced by about an order of magnitude to fit the present data.

Exchange and correlation effects on drag in low density electron bilayers: Coulomb and virtual-optical-phonon-mediated electron-electron interaction

We investigate the effect of exchange and correlation (xc) in low-density electron bilayers. Along with the direct Coulomb interaction, the effective electron-electron interaction mediated by the exchange of virtual polar optical (PO) phonons is considered. We find that the introduction of xc corrections results in a significant enhancement of the transresistivity and qualitative changes in its temperature dependence. The virtual PO-phonon contribution behaves similarly to the Coulomb drag and reduces noticeably the total drag thereby resulting in a better agreement with the recent experimental findings.

Strong phase shifts and color-suppressed tree amplitudes in B -> D K^(*) and B -> D pi, D rho decays

We analyze the decay processes B \to DK, DK^*, Dπ, and Dρin a model-independent way. Using the quark diagram approach, we determine the magnitudes of the relevant amplitudes and the relative strong phase shifts. In order to find the most likely values of the magnitudes and the relative strong phases of the amplitudes in a statistically reliable way, we use the χ^2 minimization technique. We find that the strong phase difference between the color-allowed and the color-suppressed tree amplitude can be large and is non-zero at 1 σlevel with the present data. The color-suppressed tree contributions are found to be sizably enhanced. We also examine the validity of factorization and estimate the breaking effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry in B \to DK, Dπand in B \to DK^*, Dρ.

Importance of Threshold Corrections in Quark-Lepton Complementarity

The recent experimental measurements of the solar neutrino mixing angle $θ_{sol}$ and the Cabibbo mixing angle $θ_C$ reveal a surprising relation, $ θ_{sol}+θ_C \simeq \fracπ{4}$. We note that the lepton mixing matrix derived from quark-lepton unification can lead to a shift of the complementarity relation at low energy. While the renormalization group effects generally lead to additive contribution on top of the shift, in this letter, we show that the threshold corrections which may exist in some intermediate scale new physics such as supersymmetric standard model can diminish it, so we can achieve the complementarity relation at a low energy. Finally, we discuss a possibility to achieve the complementarity relation at a high energy by taking particular form of non-symmetric form of down Yukawa matrix.

Muonium-antimuonium conversion in models with heavy neutrinos

We study muonium-antimuonium conversion and mu+ e- to mu- e+ scattering within two different lepton-flavor-violating models with heavy neutrinos: model I is a typical seesaw that violates lepton number as well as flavor; model II has a neutrino mass texture where lepton number is conserved. We look for the largest possible amplitudes of these processes that are consistent with current bounds. We find that model I has very limited chance of providing an observable signal, except if a finely tuned condition in parameter space occurs. Model II, on the other hand, requires no fine tuning and could cause larger effects. However, the maximum amplitude provided by this model is still two orders of magnitude below the sensitivity of current experiments: one predicts an effective coupling G_MM up to 10^{-4}G_F for heavy neutrino masses near 10 TeV. We have also clarified some discrepancies in previous literature on this subject.

Lepton Flavor Violation as a Probe of Quark-Lepton Unification

The recent measurements of the solar neutrino mixing angle theta_{sol} and the Cabibbo mixing angle theta_C reveal a surprising relation, theta_{sol}+theta_C ~ pi/4. Interpreting this empirical relation as a support of the quark-lepton unification, we find that the PMNS mixing matrix can be decomposed into a CKM-like matrix and maximal mixing matrices, which can give profound implications on the quark-lepton unification. We explore a possibility to probe the implication of quark-lepton unification by considering the relative sizes of branching ratios for the lepton flavor violating radiative decay processes, l_i-->l_j gamma, in the context of the supersymmetric standard model with heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos.

Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory for the Stopping Power of an Interacting Electron Gas for Slow Ions

Based on the time-dependent density-functional theory, we have derived a rigorous formula for the stopping power of an {\it interacting} electron gas for ions in the limit of low projectile velocities. If dynamical correlation between electrons is not taken into account, this formula recovers the corresponding stopping power of {\it noninteracting} electrons in an effective Kohn-Sham potential. The correlation effect, specifically the excitonic one in electron-hole pair excitations, however, is found to considerably enhance the stopping power for intermediately charged ions, bringing our theory into good agreement with experiment.

Variational approach to the scattering of charged particles by a many-electron system

We report a variational approach to the nonlinearly screened interaction of charged particles with a many-electron system. This approach has been developed by introducing a modification of the Schwinger variational principle of scattering theory, which allows to obtain nonperturbative scattering cross-sections of moving projectiles from the knowledge of the linear and quadratic density-response functions of the target. Our theory is illustrated with a calculation of the energy loss per unit path length of slow antiprotons moving in a uniform electron gas, which shows good agreement with a fully nonlinear self-consistent Hartree calculation. Since available self-consistent calculations are restricted to low heavy-projectile velocities, we expect our theory to have novel applications to a variety of processes where nonlinear screening plays an important role.

Polarization Anomaly in $B\to ϕK^{*}$ and Probe of Tensor Interactions

The pure penguin process $B\to ϕK^*$ is one of the most important probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. Recently BaBar and Belle have measured the unexpectedly large transverse polarization in the decays $B\to ϕK^*$, which may single out new physics effects beyond the Standard model. We study the possibility that the phenomenon could serve as an important probe of anomalous tensor interactions. We find that a spin flipped tensor interaction with a small strength and a phase could give a possible solution to the polarization puzzle.

Annihilation Rate of Heavy $0^{-+}$ Quarkonium in Relativistic Salpeter Method

Two-photon and two-gluon annihilation rates of $η_c$, $η'_c$, $η_b$ and $η'_b$ are estimated in the relativistic Salpeter method. By solving the full Salpeter equation with a well defined relativistic wave function, we estimate $M_{η_c}=2.979\pm 0.432$ GeV, $M_{η'_c}=3.566\pm 0.437$ GeV, $M_{η_b}=9.364\pm 1.120$ GeV and $M_{η'_b}=9.941\pm 1.112$ GeV. We calculated the transition amplitude using the Mandelstam formalism and estimate the decay widths: $Γ(η_c \to 2γ)=7.14\pm 0.95$ KeV, $Γ(η'_c \to 2γ)=4.44\pm 0.48$ KeV, $Γ(η_b \to 2γ)=0.384\pm 0.047$ KeV and $Γ(η'_b \to 2γ)=0.191\pm 0.025$ KeV. We also give estimates of total widths by the two-gluon decay rates: $Γ_{tot}(η_c)=19.6\pm 2.6$ MeV, $Γ_{tot}(η'_c)=12.1\pm 1.3$ MeV, $Γ_{tot}(η_b)=6.98\pm 0.85$ MeV and $Γ_{tot}(η_b)=3.47\pm 0.45$ MeV.
