Two-gap to Single-gap Transition and Two-dome-like Superconductivity in Alkali-Metal Intercalated Bilayer PdTe2

PdTe2 has been synthesized with controllable thickness down to the monolayer limit. Based on first-principles calculations within the fully anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg framework, this work reveals that alkali-metal intercalation markedly enhances the weak superconductivity of bilayer PdTe2, boosting the transition temperature from 1.4 K to 5.0 -13.5 K and yielding a two-dome-like evolution of Tc. Rubidium intercalation induces the highest Tc of 13.5 K, which can be further increased to 14.5 K under biaxial tensile strain. The strain-dependent evolution of Tc also exhibits a two-dome-like behavior, reflecting the interplay between strain-induced band structure modifications and electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Moreover, a systematic correlation is identified between interlayer interaction and superconducting gap. Lithium intercalation induces a distinct two-gap state, whereas intercalants with larger atomic radii (Na, K, Rb, and Cs) drive the system into a single-gap character. The two-gap to single-gap transition originates from the modulation of interlayer coupling through intercalation-induced interlayer expansion. In addition, pristine and Li/Na-intercalated bilayers exhibit nontrivial band topology, suggesting that layered PdTe2 provides a promising platform for realizing the coexistence of superconductivity and nontrivial topology. These results provide detailed anisotropic insights into EPC and offer viable pathways for enhancing Tc and achieving diverse properties in layered PdTe2 systems.

Phase Diagram of Kane-Mele Hubbard model at small doping

Recent experiment on MoTe$_2$-WTe$_2$ twisted bi-layer demonstrated physics of Kane-Mele (KM) as well as Haldane models. Although topological properties of KM model has been studied extensively, effects of interaction are still less explored beyond half filling. In this work we study the effect of Hubbard interaction in KM model at small hole doping around half filling. We use density matrix renormalization group method to characterize different phase of cylinders with width of $L_y=3$ unit cells. We identify {a possible} superconducting (SC) phase and transition at different strength of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and show the strong dependence of critical interaction for SC transition. We also calculate the single-particle Green's function, spin-spin and density-density correlations and compare with SC correlation to establish the dominance of SC correlations. Our result highlights striking behaviour of SC transition and its dependence on SOC which could be useful in understanding different ways to achieve unconventional SC.

Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity near the Lattice Instability in Hole-doped Hydrogenated Monolayer Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Employing the density-functional theory with local density approximation, we show that the fully hydrogenated monolayer-hexagonal boron nitride (H$_2$BN) has a direct-band gap of 2.96 eV in the blue-light region while the pristine $\textit{h}$-BN has a wider indirect-band gap of 4.78 eV. The hole-doped H$_2$BN is stable at low carrier density ($n$) but becomes dynamically unstable at higher $n$. We predict that it is a phonon-mediated superconductor with a transition temperature ($T_c$) which can reach $\sim$31 K at $n$ of $1.5\times$ $10^{14}$ holes cm$^{-2}$ near the lattice instability. The $T_c$ could be enhanced up to $\sim$82 K by applying a biaxial tensile strain at 6 % along with doping at $n$ of $3.4\times$ 10$^{14}$ holes cm$^{-2}$ close to a new lattice instability.

Gapless Higgs Mode in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov State of a Superconductor

The Higgs mode associated with amplitude fluctuations of the superconducting gap in uniform superconductors usually is heavy, which makes its excitation and detection difficult. We report on the existence of a gapless Higgs mode in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states. This feature is originated from the Goldstone mode associated with the translation symmetry breaking. The existence of the gapless Higgs mode is demonstrated by using both a phenomenological model and microscopic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. The gapless Higgs mode can avoid the decay into other low energy excitations, which renders it stable and detectable.

Coupled dimer and bond-order-wave order in the quarter-filled one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

Motivated by the experiments on the organic compound $(Per)_{2}[Pt(mnt)_{2}]$, we study the ground state of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling with the density matrix renormalization group method. We show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter $J_{c}$, with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experimental findings of the simultaneous Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions at low temperatures, which provides a theoretical understanding of such phase transition. We also show that the localized spins in this insulating state have quasi-long ranged spin correlations with collinear configurations, which resemble the classical dimer order in the absence of a magnetic order.

Quantum phase diagram and chiral spin liquid in the extended spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ honeycomb XY model

The frustrated XY model on the honeycomb lattice has drawn lots of attentions because of the potential emergence of chiral spin liquid (CSL) with the increasing of frustrations or competing interactions. In this work, we study the extended spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XY model with nearest-neighbor ($J_1$), and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_2$) interactions in the presence of a three-spins chiral ($J_χ$) term using density matrix renormalization group methods. We obtain a quantum phase diagram with both conventionally ordered and topologically ordered phases. In particular, the long-sought Kalmeyer-Laughlin CSL is shown to emerge under a small $J_χ$ perturbation due to the interplay of the magnetic frustration and chiral interactions. The CSL, which is a non-magnetic phase, is identified by the scalar chiral order, the finite spin gap on a torus, and the chiral entanglement spectrum described by chiral $SU(2)_{1}$ conformal field theory.

Monolayer NbF$_4$: a $4d^1$-analogue of cuprates

The electronic structure and possible electronic orders in monolayer NbF$_4$ are investigated by density functional theory and functional renormalization group. Because of the niobium-centered octahedra, the energy band near the Fermi level is found to derive from the $4d_{xy}$ orbital, well separated from the other bands. Local Coulomb interaction drives the undoped system into an antiferromagnetic insulator. Upon suitable electron/hole doping, the system is found to develop $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductivity with sizable transition temperature. Therefore, the monolayer NbF$_4$ may be an exciting $4d^1$ analogue of cuprates, providing a new two-dimensional platform for high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Temperature-dependent spectral function of a Kondo impurity in an $s$-wave superconductor

Using the numerical renormalization group method, the effect due to a Kondo impurity in an $s$-wave superconductor is examined at finite temperature ($T$). The $T$-behaviors of the spectral function and the magnetic moment at the impurity site are calculated. At $T$=0, the spin due to the impurity is in singlet state when the ratio between the Kondo temperature $T_k$ and the superconducting gap $Δ$ is larger than 0.26. Otherwise, the spin of the impurity is in a doublet state. We show that the separation of the double Yu-Shiba-Rusinov peaks in the spectral function shrinks as $T$ increases if $T_k/Δ<0.26$ while it is expanding if $T_k/Δ>0.26$ and $Δ$ remains to be a constant. These features could be measured by experiments and thus provide a unique way to determine whether the spin of the single Kondo impurity is in singlet or doublet state at zero temperature.

Graphane with carbon dimer defects: Robust in-gap states and a scalable two-dimensional platform for quantum computation

We study the energy level structures of the defective graphane lattice, where a carbon dimer defect is created by removing the hydrogen atoms on two nearest-neighbor carbon sites. Robust defect states emerge inside the bulk insulating gap of graphane. While for the stoichiometric half-filled system there are two doubly degenerate defect levels, there are four nondegenerate and spin-polarized in-gap defect levels in the system with one electron less than half filling. A universal set of quantum gates can be realized in the defective graphane lattice, by triggering resonant transitions among the defect states via optical pulses and \emph{ac} magnetic fields. The sizable energy separation between the occupied and the empty in-gap states enables precise control at room temperature. The spatial locality of the in-gap states implies a qubit network of extremely high areal density. Based on these results, we propose that graphane as a unique platform could be used to construct the future all-purpose quantum computers.

Charge Density Wave in a Doped Kondo Chain

We report the existence of the charge density wave (CDW) in the ground state of 1D Kondo lattice model at the filling of n=0.75 in the weak coupling region. The CDW is driven by the effective Coulomb repulsion mediated by the localized spins. Based on our numerical results using the density matrix renormalization group method, we show that the CDW phase appears in the paramagnetic region previously known as the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The emergence of this phase serves as an example of CDW phase induced without bare repulsive interactions, and enriches the phase diagram of the 1D Kondo lattice model.

Kondo Signatures of a Quantum Magnetic Impurity in Topological Superconductors

We study the Kondo physics of a quantum magnetic impurity in two-dimensional topological superconductors (TSCs), either intrinsic or induced on the surface of a bulk topological insulator, using a numerical renormalization group technique. We show that, despite sharing the p + ip pairing symmetry, intrinsic and extrinsic TSCs host different physical processes that produce distinct Kondo signatures. Extrinsic TSCs harbor an unusual screening mechanism involving both electron and orbital degrees of freedom that produces rich and prominent Kondo phenomena, especially an intriguing pseudospin Kondo singlet state in the superconducting gap and a spatially anisotropic spin correlation. In sharp contrast, intrinsic TSCs support a robust impurity spin doublet ground state and an isotropic spin correlation. These findings advance fundamental knowledge of novel Kondo phenomena in TSCs and suggest experimental avenues for their detection and distinction.

Possible two-component pairings in electron-doped Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ based on a tight-binding model

Recent experiments show the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry in the superconducting topological insulators M$_{x}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ (M represents Cu, Sr, or Nd), suggesting that the pairing belongs to a two-dimensional representation of the $D_{3d}$ symmetry group of the crystal. Motivated by these progresses, we construct an exhaustive list of possible two-component pairings of the M$_{x}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ superconductors, both for the odd-parity $E_{u}$ representation and for the even-parity $E_{g}$ representation. Starting from a tight-binding model for the normal phase of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ and M$_{x}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, we firstly construct the pairing channels in the spin-orbital basis, up to second-nearest-neighbor pairing correlations in the basal plane. We then infer the properties of these pairings by transforming them to the band (pseudospin) basis for the conduction band. A comparison with the key experimental consensuses on M$_{x}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ superconductors shows that the true pairings should also be multichannel. Besides a nematic and time-reversal symmetric pairing combination, the other pairings that we have identified are chiral and nematic at the same time, which may be nonunitary and have a spontaneous magnetization. A complementary set of experiments are proposed to identify the true pairing symmetries of these superconductors and their evolution with the doping concentration $x$.

Surface states of gapped electron systems and semi-metals

With a generic lattice model for electrons occupying a semi-infinite crystal with a hard surface, we study the eigenstates of the system with a bulk band gap (or the gap with nodal points). The exact solution to the wave functions of scattering states is obtained. From the scattering states, we derive the criterion for the existence of surface states. The wave functions and the energy of the surface states are then determined. We obtain a connection between the wave functions of the bulk states and the surface states. For electrons in a system with time-reversal symmetry, with this connection, we rigorously prove the correspondence between the change of Kramers degeneracy of the surface states and the bulk time-reversal $Z_2$ invariant. The theory is applicable to systems of (topological) insulators, superconductors, and semi-metals. Examples for solving the edge states of electrons with/without the spin-orbit interactions in graphene with a hard zigzag edge and that in a two-dimensional $d$-wave superconductor with a (1,1) edge are given in appendices.

Electronic structure and nontrivial topological surface states in ZrRuP and ScPd$_{3}$ compounds

In this paper, we investigate the topological properties of ZrRuP and ScPd$_{3}$ using the first-principles calculations. We calculate the electronic structure, surface states, and Z$_{2}$ topological invariant. The band structure of ZrRuP without the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) exhibits a nodal line located at $Γ$-K-M high symmetry line in the Brillouin zone(BZ). The nodal line is protected by the mirror symmetry corresponding to the plane $k_{z}=0$. The geometry of Fermi surface is a connected torus centered at K point with open orbits at the boundary of BZ, when the Fermi level is shifted up 0.25 eV. The inclusion of SOC leads to the gap opening in the band structure which corresponds adiabatically to transition from nodal line semimetal to topological insulator. The corresponding surface states were obtained from thin film calculations, and the result shows surface states emerging along the gap region. We also identify the ScPd$_{3}$ compound as a Dirac nodal line semimetal. This structure has nontrivial surface states and the corresponding Z$_{2}$ topological invariant is (1;000). Both the ScPd$_{3}$ and ZrRuP have the Fermi surfaces of the bands which make nodal lines with open orbits.

Orbital magnetization of interacting Dirac fermions in graphene

We present a formalism to calculate the orbital magnetization of interacting Dirac fermions under a magnetic field. In this approach, the divergence difficulty is overcome with a special limit of the derivative of the thermodynamic potential with respect to the magnetic field. The formalism satisfies the particle-hole symmetry of the Dirac fermions system. We apply the formalism to the interacting Dirac fermions in graphene. The charge and spin orderings and the exchange interactions between all the Landau levels are taken into account by the mean-field theory. The results for the orbital magnetization of interacting Dirac fermions are compared with that of non-interacting cases.

Nematic superconductivity in Cu$_{x}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$: The surface Andreev bound states

We study theoretically the topological surface states (TSSs) and the possible surface Andreev bound states (SABSs) of Cu$_{x}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ which is known to be a topological insulator at $x=0$. The superconductivity (SC) pairing of this compound is assumed to have the broken spin-rotation symmetry, similar to that of the A-phase of $^{3}$He as suggested by recent nuclear-magnetic resonance experiments. For both spheroidal and corrugated cylindrical Fermi surfaces with the hexagonal warping terms, we show that the bulk SC gap is rather anisotropic; the minimum of the gap is negligibly small as comparing to the maximum of the gap. This would make the fully-gapped pairing effectively nodal. For a clean system, our results indicate the bulk of this compound to be a topological superconductor with the SABSs appearing inside the bulk SC gap. The zero-energy SABSs which are Majorana fermions, together with the TSSs not gapped by the pairing, produce a zero-energy peak in the surface density of states (SDOS). The SABSs are expected to be stable against short-range nonmagnetic impurities, and the local SDOS is calculated around a nonmagnetic impurity. The relevance of our results to experiments is discussed.

Type-II Dirac cone and Dirac cone protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry in carbon-lithium compound (C4Li)

In this work, we predict a novel band structure for Carbon-Lithium(C4Li) compound using the first-principles method. We show that it exhibits two Dirac points near the Fermi level; one located at W point originating from the nonsymmophic symmetry of the compound, and the other one behaves like a type-II Dirac cone with higher anisotropy along the Γ to X line. The obtained Fermi surface sheets of the hole-pocket and the electron-pocket near the type-II Dirac cone are separated from each other, and they would touch each other when the Fermi level is doped to cross the type-II Dirac cone. The evolution of Fermi surface with doping is also discussed. The bands crossing from T to W make a line-node at the intersection of kx=π and ky=π mirror planes. The C4Li is a novel material with both nonsymmorphic protected Dirac cone and type-II Dirac cone near the Fermi level which may exhibit exceptional topological property for electronic applications.

Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of superconducting Weyl metals: Fundamental differences between pairings restricted and extended in the $\it{\textbf{k}}$-space

Two common approaches of studying theoretically the property of a superconductor are shown to have significant differences, when they are applied to the Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of Weyl metals. In the first approach the pairing term is restricted by a cutoff energy to the neighborhood of the Fermi surface, whereas in the second approach the pairing term is extended to the whole Brillouin zone. We explore their difference by considering two minimal models for the Weyl metal. For a model giving a single pair of Weyl pockets, both two approaches give a partly-gapped (fully-gapped) bulk spectrum for small (large) pairing amplitude. However, for very small cutoff energy, a portion of the Fermi surface can be completely unaffected by the pairing term in the first approach. For the other model giving two pairs of Weyl pockets, while the bulk spectrum for the first approach can be fully gapped, the one from the second approach has a robust line node, and the surface states are also changed qualitatively by the pairing. We elucidate the above differences by topological arguments and analytical analyses. A factor common to both of the two models is the tilting of the Weyl cones which leads to asymmetric normal state band structure with respect to the Weyl nodes. For the Weyl metal with two pairs of Weyl pockets, the band folding leads to a double degeneracy in the effective model, which distinguishes the pairing of the second approach from all others.
