Nesting-induced Local Electronic Patterns around a Single As (Te, Se) Vacancy in Iron-based Superconductors

The local electronic states around a single As (Te, Se) vacancy are investigated in order to shed light on the role of ligands in a series of iron-based superconductors. Such a vacancy can produce a local hopping correction ranging from $-0.22$ eV to 0.12 eV and always induce two in-gap resonance peaks in the local density of states (LDOS) at the fixed symmetrical bias voltages, which are rather robust and irrelevant to the phase of superconducting order parameter. The LDOS images near the defect predominantly possess $0^o$ and $45^o$ stripes. These energy-dependent charge modulations created by quasiparticle interference are originated in the nesting effect between the inner (outer) hole Fermi surface around $Γ$ point and the inner (outer) electron Fermi surface around $M$ point.

Searching for two-dimensional Weyl superconductors in heterostructures

Two-dimensional Weyl superconductor is the most elusive member of a group of materials with Weyl fermions as low-energy excitations. Here, we propose to realize this state in a heterostructure consisting of thin films of half-metal and spin-singlet superconductor. In particular, for the $d$-wave case, a very robust two-dimensional Weyl superconductor (dWSC) is realized independent of the orientation of the spontaneous magnetization of the half-metal. The quasiparticle spectra of the dWSC show interesting evolution with the direction of the magnetization, featured by a series of Lifshitz transitions in the zero-energy contour of the quasiparticle spectrum. For a general magnetization orientation of the half-metal, the state is a combination of a superconducting component and a normal fluid component and is different from all known forms of pairings. In addition, we find a transition between type-I and type-II Weyl nodes. This is also the first example of a type-II Weyl node in the presence of superconducting correlation. The symmetries and topological properties of the system are analyzed. We also study the phases in the heterostructure with the half-metal replaced by a ferromagnetic metal with a partially spin-polarized Fermi surface.

Integer Quantum Hall Effect of Interacting Electrons in Graphene

By taking into account the charge and spin orderings and the exchange interactions between all the Landau levels, we investigate the integer quantum Hall effect of electrons in graphene using the mean-field theory. At the fillings $ν= 4n+2$ with $n = 0, 1, \cdots$, the system is in the high-symmetry state with the Landau levels four-fold degenerated. We show that with doping the degenerated lowest empty levels can be sequentially filled one level by one level, the filled level is lower than the empty ones because of the symmetry breaking. This result explains the step $Δν$ = 1 in the integer quantized Hall conductivity of the experimental observations. We also present in the supplemental material a high efficient method for dealing with huge number of the Coulomb couplings between all the levels.

Flux-Stabilized Majorana Zero Modes in Coupled One-Dimensional Fermi Wires

One promising avenue to study one-dimensional ($1$D) topological phases is to realize them in synthetic materials such as cold atomic gases. Intriguingly, it is possible to realize Majorana boundary modes in a $1$D number-conserving system consisting of two fermionic chains coupled only by pair-hopping processes. It is commonly believed that significant interchain single-particle tunneling necessarily destroys these Majorana modes, as it spoils the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ fermion parity symmetry that protects them. In this Letter, we present a new mechanism to overcome this obstacle, by piercing a (synthetic) magnetic $π$-flux through each plaquette of the Fermi ladder. Using bosonization, we show that in this case there exists an exact leg-interchange symmetry that is robust to interchain hopping, and acts as fermion parity at long wavelengths. We utilize density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization to verify that the resulting model exhibits Majorana boundary modes up to large single-particle tunnelings, comparable to the intrachain hopping strength. Our work highlights the unusual impacts of different topologically trivial band structures on these interaction-driven topological phases, and identifies a distinct route to stabilizing Majorana boundary modes in $1$D fermionic ladders.

Topological Phase Transitions and a Two-Dimensional Weyl Superconductor in a Half-Metal/Superconductor Heterostructure

We find a series of topological phase transitions in a half-metal/superconductor heterostructure, by tuning the direction of the magnetization of the half-metal film. These include transitions between a topological superconducting phase with a bulk gap and another phase without a bulk gap but has a ubiquitous local gap. At the same time, the edge states change from counter-propagating Majorana edge modes to unidirectional Majorana edge modes. In addition, we find transitions between the second phase and a nodal phase which turns out to be a two-dimensional Weyl superconductor with Fermi line edge states. We identify the topological invariants relevant to each phase and the symmetry that protects the Weyl superconductivity phase.

Spinon Majorana fermions

A realization of Majorana fermions is proposed in the frustrated magnets via the topological proximity effect. Specifically, we consider a theoretical model, where a topological insulator is coupled to a frustrated magnetic material through the spin exchange interaction. Using the renormalization group-based self-consistent mean-field approach, and calculating the self-energy correction due to the topological insulator, we find that the spin texture and the spin-momentum locking of the Dirac cone will be inherited by the spinons in the nearby frustrated magnets. This leads to a particular topological state of matter that supports the Majorana excitations. Unlike the conventional realization in SC systems, these Majorana fermions are the combination of spinons and anti-spinons, rather than electrons and holes. They can participate in the transport of spinons, leading to nontrivial properties of the spin transport.

Phase boundary of spin-polarized-current state of electrons in bilayer graphene

Using a four-band Hamiltonian, we study the phase boundary of spin-polarized-current state (SPCS) of interacting electrons in bilayer graphene. The model of spin-polarized-current state has previously been shown to resolve a number of experimental puzzles in bilayer graphene. The phase boundaries of the SPCS with and without the external voltage between the two layers are obtained in this work. An unusual phase boundary where there are two transition temperatures for a given carrier concentration is found at finite external voltage. The physics of this phenomenon is explained.

Ferromagnetism and superconductivity with possible $p+ip$ pairing symmetry in partially hydrogenated graphene

By means of first-principles calculations, we predict two new types of partially hydrogenated graphene systems: C$_{6}$H$_{1}$ and C$_{6}$H$_{5}$, which are shown to be ferromagnetic (FM) semimetal and FM narrow-gap semiconductor, respectively. When properly doped, the Fermi surface of the two systems consists of an electron pocket or six hole patches in the first Brillouin zone with completely spin-polarized charge carries. If superconductivity exists in these systems, the stable pairing symmetries are shown to be $p+ip$ for electron doped case, and anisotropic $p+ip$ for hole doped case. The predicted systems may provide fascinating platforms for studying the novel properties of ferromagnetism and triplet-pairing superconductivity as well as two-dimensional spintronics.

Effects of single- and multi-substituted Zn ions in doped-122 type iron-based superconductors

Recent experiments on Zn-substituted 122-type iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) at electron- and hole- doped region provide us with a testing ground for understanding the effect of Zn impurities in these systems. Our first-principle calculations of the electronic structure reveal that the Zn 3d orbitals are far below the Fermi level and chemically inactive, while the Zn 4s-orbital is partially occupied and its wave function overlapping with those 3d-orbitals of neighboring Fe-ions. This suggests that the impurity effect is originating in the Zn 4s-orbital, not its 3d-orbitals. Employing a phenomenological two-orbital lattice model for 122-FeSCs and the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we study how the Zn-impurities suppress the superconductivity in electron- and hole- doped compounds. Our obtained results qualitatively agree with the experimental measurements.

Quantum anomalies in superconducting Weyl metals

We theoretically study the quantum anomalies in the superconducting Weyl metals based on the topological field theory. It is demonstrated that the Fermi arc and the surface Andreev bound state, characteristic of the superconducting Weyl metals, are the manifestations of two underlying phenomenon, namely the chiral anomaly and the parity-like anomaly, respectively. The first anomaly is inherited from the Berry curvature around the original Weyl points, while the second is the result of the superconductivity. We show that, all the fascinating topological behavior of the superconducting Weyl metals, either intranode FFLO or the internode BCS pairing state, can be satisfactorily described and predicted by our topological field theory.

Type-II Topological Meissner States

We study the \emph{orbital effects} of the synthetic magnetic fields in an interacting square lattice two-leg fermionic ladder model with the number-conserving pair hopping that hosting the Majorana bound states. By utilizing density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization, we identify a novel type-II topological Meissner $($\emph{topo}-Meissner$)$ phase $($as distinguished from the low-field type-I \emph{topo}-Meissner state$)$ when threading a \emph{high} magnetic flux through the plaquette of the ladder, which not only exhibits a large uniformly circulating chiral current along the legs, the characteristics of the celebrated Meissner state, but also accommodates a topologically protected ground-state manifold due to the \emph{reentrant} emergence of the Majorana end modes. Our work reveals some interesting interference effects resulting from the interplay between the gauge fields and the strong interactions in establishing the intrinsic topological states of matter in low-dimensional quantum systems.

Resonant Spin and Charge Hall Effects in 2D Electron Gas with Unequal Rashba and Dresselhaus Spin-Orbit Couplings under a Perpendicular Magnetic Field

We have investigated the complex two-dimensional electron system with unequal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The spin polarizations are obtained in a wide range of magnetic fields. It is shown that such a system is hard to be magnetized. We also find that the resonant charge and spin Hall conductances occurs simultaneously at a certain magnetic field, at which two (nearly) degenerate Landau levels are filled partly. The resonant Hall effects are universal in this type of semiconductor materials, and could have potential application for semiconductor spintronics.

Tunneling interstitial impurity in iron-chalcogenide based superconductors

A pronounced local in-gap zero-energy bound state (ZBS) has been observed by recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on the interstitial Fe impurity (IFI) and its nearest-neighboring (nn) sites in $\mathrm{FeTe_{0.5}Se_{0.5}}$ superconducting (SC) compound. By introducing a new impurity mechanism, the so-called tunneling impurity, and based on the Bogoliubove-de Gennes (BDG) equations we investigated the low-lying energy states of the IFI and the underlying Fe-plane. We found the peak of ZBS does not shift or split in a magnetic field as long as the tunneling parameter between IFI and the Fe-plane is sufficiently small and the Fe-plane is deep in the SC state. Our results are in good agreement with the experiments. We also predicted that modulation of spin density wave (SDW), or charge density wave (CDW) will suppress the intensity of the ZBS.

Edge states and local electronic structure around an adsorbed impurity in a topological superconductor

Recently topological superconducting states has attracted a lot of interest. In this work, we consider a topo- logical superconductor with $Z_2$ topological mirror order [1] and s$\pm$-wave superconducting pairing symmetry, within a two-orbital model originally designed for iron-based superconductivity [2]. We predict the existence of gapless edge states. We also study the local electronic structure around an adsorbed interstitial magnetic impurity in the system, and find the existence of low-energy in-gap bound states even with a weak spin polar- ization on the impurity. We also discuss the relevance of our results to the recent STM experiment on Fe(Te,Se) compound with adsorbed Fe impurity [3], for which our density functional calculations show the Fe impurity is spin polarized.

Current orderings of interacting electrons in bilayer graphene

By taking into account the possibility of all the intralayer as well as the interlayer current orderings, we derive an eight-band model for interacting electrons in bilayer graphene. With the numerical solution to the model, we show that only the current orderings between the same sublattice sites can exist within the range of the physical interacting strength. This result confirms our previous model of spin-polarized-current phase for the ground-state of interacting electrons in bilayer graphene that resolves a number of experimental puzzles.

Phase diagram of the isovalent phosphorous-substituted 122-type iron pnictides

Recent experiments demonstrated that isovalent doping system gives the similar phase diagram as the heterovalent doped cases. For example, with the phosphorous (P)-doping, the magnetic order in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ compound is first suppressed, then the superconductivity dome emerges to an extended doping region but eventually it disappears at large $x$. With the help of a minimal two-orbital model for both BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$P$_{2}$, together with the self-consistent lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation, we calculate the phase diagram against the P content $x$ in which the doped isovalent P-atoms are treated as impurities. We show that our numerical results can qualitatively compare with the experimental measurements.

A unified description of superconducting pairing symmetry in electron-doped Fe-based-122 compounds

The pairing symmetry is examined in highly electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As)$_2$ and A$_y$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ (with A=K, Cs) compounds, with similar crystallographic and electronic band structures. Starting from a phenomenological two-orbital model, we consider nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor intraorbital pairing interactions on the Fe square lattice. In this model, we find a unified description of the evolution from $s_\pm$-wave pairing ($2.0 < n \lesssim 2.4$) to $d$-wave pairing ($2.4 \lesssim n \lesssim 2.5$) as a function of electron filling. In the crossover region a novel time-reversal symmetry breaking state with $s_\pm+id$ pairing symmetry emerges. This minimal model offers an overall picture of the evolution of superconductivity with electron doping for both $s_\pm$-wave [Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As)$_2$] and $d$-wave [A$_y$Fe$_2$Se$_2$] pairing, as long as the dopants only play the role of a charge reservoir. However, the situation is more complicated for Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As)$_2$. A real-space study further shows that when the impurity scattering effects of Co dopants are taken into account, the superconductivity is completely suppressed for $n > 2.4$. This preempts any observation of $d$-wave pairing in this compound, in contrast to A$_y$Fe$_2$Se$_2$.

Magnetic ground state of superconducting Eu(Fe0.88Ir0.12)2As2: A combined neutron diffraction and first-principles calculation study

The magnetic order of the localized Eu$^{2+}$ spins in optimally-doped Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($\mathit{x}$ = 0.12) with superconducting transition temperature $\mathit{T_{SC}}$ = 22 K was investigated by single-crystal neutron diffraction. The Eu$^{2+}$ moments were found to be ferromagnetically aligned along the $\mathit{c}$-direction with an ordered moment of 7.0(1) $μ_{B}$ well below the magnetic phase transition temperature $\mathit{T_{C}}$ = 17 K. No evidence of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition was found in this compound within the experimental uncertainty, in which the spin-density-wave (SDW) order of the Fe sublattice is supposed to be completely suppressed and the superconductivity gets fully developed. The ferromagnetic groud state of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins in Eu(Fe$_{0.88}$Ir$_{0.12}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ was supported by the first-principles density functional calculation. In addition, comparison of the electronic structure calculations between Eu(Fe$_{0.875}$Ir$_{0.125}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and the parent compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ indicates stronger hybridization and more expanded bandwith due to the Ir substitution, which together with the introduction of electrons might work against the Fe-SDW in favor of the superconductivity.
