Emergent topological mirror insulator in t2g-orbital systems

The electronic band structure of iron pnictides exhibits four Dirac cones, which are due to crystal symmetry and orbital bonding orientation. This hallmark signature presents the pnictide family as an ideal candidate in the search for quasi-two-dimensional topological crystalline insulators. In this report, we explore interaction-induced topological phases which cannot be described by conventional local order parameters. Based on a model Hamiltonian our symmetry analysis shows that sponta- neous novel topological phases may be realized in compounds with tetragonal crystal field symmetry, where the electrons occupy the two degenerate t2g energy levels at low temperature. We identify two stable topological phases in the ground state, which emerge from spontaneous orbital current order. These currents are driven by electronic correlations caused by inter-orbital Coulomb interactions. The first topological phase is an anomalous orbital Hall phase, characterized by a nonzero Chern number, while the second topological phase has a vanishing Chern number, though with an extra Z2-like invariant that preserves parity. More specifically, the interaction-induced novel phase of the quasi-two-dimensional topological crystalline insulator is protected by mirror reflection symmetries and therefore may be realized in pnictides.

Cellular dynamical mean-field theory study of an interacting topological honeycomb lattice model at finite temperature

Topological phases originating from spin-orbit coupling have attracted great attention recently. In this work, we use cellular dynamical mean field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo solver to study the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model supplemented with an additional third-neighbor hopping term. For weak interactions, the third-neighbor hopping term drives a topological phase transition between a topological insulator and a trivial insulator, consistent with previous fermion sign-free quantum Monte Carlo results [H.-Hung et al., Phys. Rev. B 89, 235104 (2014)]. At finite temperatures, the Dirac cones of the zero temperature topological phase boundary give rise to a metallic regime of finite width in the third-neighbor hopping. Furthermore, we extend the range of interactions into the strong coupling regime and find an easy-plane anti-ferromagnetic insulating state across a wide range of third-neighbor hopping. In contrast to the weak coupling regime, no topological phase transition occurs at strong coupling, and the ground state is a trivial anti-ferromagnetic insulating state. A comprehensive finite temperature phase diagram in the interaction-third-neighbor hopping plane is provided.

Interaction driven quantum phase transition in fractional quantum spin Hall effects

By means of finite size exact diagonalization we theoretically study the electronic many-body effects on the nearly flat-band structure with time-reversal symmetry in a checkerboard lattice model and identify the topological nature of two quantum phases, with ninefold and threefold degeneracy, that appear, respectively, at small and large values $λ$ of a nearest neighbor spin dependent interaction. Numerical evidences from the evolution of low-lying energy spectra and Berry phases with both spin-independent and spin-dependent twisted boundary conditions reveal that these two different ground states share the same topological spin Chern number. Quantum phase transition between these two states by tuning $λ$ is confirmed by evaluating the energy spectra and quasispin excitation spectra closing. At last, the counting rules of spin excitation spectra are demonstrated as the fingerprints of the fractionalized quantum spin Hall states.

Evolution of quasiparticle states with and without a Zn-impurity in doped 122 iron pnictides

Based on a minimal two-orbital model [Tai {\it et al.}, Europhys. Lett. \textbf{103}, 67001 (2013)], which captures the canonical electron-hole-doping phase diagram of the iron-pnictide BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, we study the evolution of quasiparticle states as a function of doping using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with and without a single impurity. Analyzing the density of states of uniformly doped samples, we are able to identify the origin of the two superconducting gaps observed in optimally hole- or electron-doped systems. The local density of states (LDOS) is then examined near a single impurity in samples without antiferromagnetic order. The qualitative features of our results near the single impurity are consistent with a work based on a five-orbital model[K. Toshikaze {\it et al.}, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{79}, 083704 (2010)]. This further supports the validity of our two-orbital model in dealing with LDOS in the single-impurity problem. Finally, we investigate the evolution of the LDOS with doping near a single impurity in the unitary or strong scattering limit, such as Zn replacing Fe. The positions of the ingap resonance peaks exhibited in our LDOS may indirectly reflect the evolution of the Fermi surface topology according to the phase diagram. Our prediction of ingap states and the evolution of the LDOS near a strong scattering single impurity can be validated by experiments probing the local quasiparticle spectrum.

Spin-Polarized-Current State of Electrons in Bilayer Graphene

We propose a model of spin-polarized-current state for electrons in bilayer graphene. The model resolves the puzzles as revealed by experiments that (a) the energy gap $E_{\rm gap}$ of the insulating ground state at the charge neutrality point (CNP) can be closed by a perpendicular electric field of either polarity, (b) $E_{\rm gap}$ increases significantly with increasing the magnetic field $B$, (c) the particle-hole spectrum is asymmetric in the presence of $B$, (d) there is a peak structure in the electric conductivity at small $B$ at the CNP, and (e) there are quantum Hall states stemming from lifting of degeneracy in the lowest Landau level. The model predicts that the ground state of the system close to the CNP is a ferrimagnet at finite $B$ and the Hall current is spin polarized.

Pressure induced topological quantum phase transition in Sb_2Se_3

Based on the first-principles band structure calculations, we investigate the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the conventional insulator (CI) Sb_2Se_3 and predict that it undergoes a topological quantum phase transition from a CI to a nontrivial topological insulator at a critical pressure value. The pressure-induced topological quantum phase transition is confirmed by calculating the evolution of the bulk energy gap as a function of pressure, the inversion of energy band structure, and the Z_2 topological invariant, as well as the existence of the Dirac-like topological surface states. Our predictions can be tested by both spectroscopy and transport experiments.

Evolution of the Fermi surface topology in doped 122 iron pnictides

Based on the minimum two-orbital model and the phase diagram recently proposed by Tai et al.\ (Europhys. Lett. \textbf{103}, 67001(2013)) for both electron- and hole-doped 122 iron-based superconducting compounds, we use the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to perform a comprehensive investigation of the evolution of the Fermi surface (FS) topology in the presence of the collinear spin-density-wave (SDW) order as the doping is changed. In the parent compound, the ground state is the SDW order, where the FS is not completely gapped, and two types of Dirac cones, one electron-doped and the other hole-doped emerge in the magnetic Brillouin zone. Our findings are qualitatively consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and magneto-resistivity measurements. We also examine the FS evolution of both electron- and hole-doped cases and compare them with measurements, as well as with those obtained by other model Hamiltonians.

Interaction-induced localization of mobile impurities in ultracold systems

The impurities, introduced intentionally or accidentally into certain materials, can significantly modify their characteristics or reveal their intrinsic physical properties, and thus play an important role in solid-state physics. Different from those static impurities in a solid, the impurities realized in cold atomic systems are naturally mobile. Here we propose an effective theory for treating some unique behaviors exhibited by ultracold mobile impurities. Our theory reveals the interaction-induced transition between the extended and localized impurity states, and also explains the essential features obtained from several previous models in a unified way. Based on our theory, we predict many intriguing phenomena in ultracold systems associated with the extended and localized impurities, including the formation of the impurity-molecules and impurity-lattices. We hope this investigation can open up a new avenue for the future studies on ultracold mobile impurities.

Disorder effects in multiorbital $s_{\pm}$-wave superconductors: Implications for Zn-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compounds

Recent experiments on Zn-doped 122-type iron pnictides, Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_y$Zn$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, are challenging our understanding of electron doping the 122s and the interplay between doping and impurity scattering. To resolve this enigma, we investigate the disorder effects of nonmagnetic Zn impurities in the strong (unitary) scattering limit on various properties of the system in the $s_{\pm}$-wave superconducting pairing state. The lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation (BdG) is solved self-consistently based on a minimal two-orbital model with an extended range of impurity concentrations. We find that Zn impurity is best modeled as a defect, where charge is mainly localized, but scattering is extended over a few lattice sites. With increasing Zn concentration the density of states shows a gradual filling of the gap, revealing the impurity-induced pair breaking effect. Moreover, both the disorder configuration-averaged superconducting order parameter and the superfluid density are dramatically suppressed towards the dirty limit, indicating the violation of the Anderson theorem for conventional s-wave superconductors and the breakdown of the Abrikosov-Gorkov theory for impurity-averaged Green's functions. Furthermore, we find that the superconducting phase is fully suppressed close to the critical impurity concentration of roughly $n_\text{imp}\approx 10%$, in agreement with recent experiments.

Ordered-Current State of Electrons in Bilayer Graphene

Based on the four-band continuum model, we study the ordered-current state (OCS) for electrons in bilayer graphene at the charge neutrality point. The present work resolves the puzzles that (a) the energy gap increases significantly with increasing the magnetic field $B$, (b) the energy gap can be closed by the external electric field of either polarization, and (c) the particle-hole spectrum is asymmetric in the presence of $B$, all these as observed by the experiment. We also present the prediction of the hysteresis energy gap behavior with varying $B$, which explains the existing experimental observation on the electric conductance at weak $B$. The large energy gap of the OCS is shown to originate from the disappearance of Landau levels of $n$ = 0 and 1 states in conduction/valence band. By comparing with the existing models and the experiments, we conclude that the OCS is a possible ground state of electrons in bilayer graphene.

Probing active/passive bands by quasiparticle interference in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$

The quasiparticle interference (QPI) in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ is theoretically studied based on two different pairing models in order to propose an experimental method to test them. For a recently proposed two-dimensional model with pairing primarily from the $γ$ band, we found clear QPI peaks evolving with energy and their locations can be determined from the tips of the constant-energy contour (CEC). On the other hand, for a former quasi-one-dimensional model with pairing on the $α$ and $β$ bands, the QPI spectra are almost dispersionless and may involve off-shell contributions to the scatterings beyond the CEC. The different behaviors of the QPI in these two models may help to resolve the controversy of active/passive bands and whether Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ is a topological superconductor.

Mixed-State Effect on the Low-Energy Spin Dynamics in Optimally-doped Iron Pnictide Superconductors

Based on a phenomenological model with $s_{\pm}$ or s-wave pairing symmetry, the mixed-state effect on the low-energy spin dynamics in optimally-doped iron pnictide superconductors is studied by solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Our results of the spin susceptibility at $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{Q}$ in the normal, superconducting and mixed states agree qualitatively with recent neutron scattering experiments. We also propose that the field-induced intensity change shows different behaviors between the $s_{\pm}$ and s-wave symmetries in both momentum and real space, thus it can be used to distinguish these two pairing symmetries.

Phase diagram of doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor under broken $C_4$ symmetry

We develop a minimal multiorbital tight-binding model with realistic hopping parameters. The model breaks the symmetry of the tetragonal point group by lowering it from $C_4$ to $D_{2d}$, which accurately describes the Fermi surface evolution of the electron-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ and hole-doped Ba$_{1-y}$K$_y$Fe$_2$As$_2$ compounds. An investigation of the phase diagram with a mean-field $t$-$U$-$V$ Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian results in agreement with the experimentally observed electron- and hole-doped phase diagram with only one set of $t$, $U$ and $V$ parameters. Additionally, the self-consistently calculated superconducting order parameter exhibits $s^\pm$-wave pairing symmetry with a small d-wave pairing admixture in the entire doping range, % The superconducting $s^\pm + d$-wave order parameter which is the subtle result of the weakly broken symmetry and competing interactions in the multiorbital mean-field Hamiltonian.

Proposed Detection of Time Reversal Symmetry in Topological Surface States

By employing T-matrix approach, we investigate a nonmagnetic impurity located on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators, where the time reversal symmetry is preserved. It is shown that the images of the local density of states (LDOS) around the single impurity have the dip-hump structures with six-fold symmetry at different bias voltages. The peaks are produced by quasiparticle interference while the local minima at the backscattering wave vectors are due to the absence of backscatterings. With increasing the bias voltage, the peaks and dips move forward to the location of the impurity. These dips at the backscattering wave vectors in the LDOS spectra can be regarded as a signature of the time reversal symmetry in the topological surface states, which could be observed by scanning tunneling microscopy.

Possible Broken Inversion and Time-Reversal Symmetry State of Electrons in Bilayer Graphene

With the two-band continuum model, we study the broken inversion and time-reversal symmetry state of electrons with finite-range repulsive interactions in bilayer graphene. With the analytical solution to the mean-field Hamiltonian, we obtain the electronic spectra. The ground state is gapped. In the presence of the magnetic field $B$, the energy gap grows with increasing $B$, in excellently agreement with the experimental observation. Such an energy gap behavior originates from the disappearance of a Landau level of $n$ = 0 and 1 states. The present result resolves explicitly the puzzle of the gap dependence of $B$.

Coexistence of Enhanced Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism: Possible Correlated Phase Transitions in Trilayer High-Tc Cuprates

Based on a hybrid interlayer coupling mechanism, we study the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in trilayer cuprates. By introducing an interlayer magnetic scattering term, we solve the multilayer $t{-}J$ model with Josephson coupling under the framework of Gutzwiller projection. We show that both the SC and AFM orders in the multilayered system are enhanced and the range of AFM order is extended. The layer configuration of d-wave pairing gap and AFM order further plays an essential role in determining the interlayer magnetic and superconducting coupling phase diagram of such multilayered systems. Abrupt phase transitions between correlated states carrying distinct configurational symmetries are unveiled by tuning the doping level and/or the tunneling strengths.

Interaction-induced localization of fermionic mobile impurities in a Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluid

We theoretically investigate the interplay between the fermionic mobile impurity atoms and a Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) superfluid in a two dimensional optical lattice. We find that the impurity atoms get localized and can form pairs when the interaction between the impurity atoms and the LO superfluid is strong enough. These features are due to the phenomena of self-localization whose underlying mechanism is revealed by an effective model. The impurity atoms with finite concentrations can drive the transition from a two-dimensional-checkerboard-like LO state to a quasi-one-dimensional-stripe-like one. Experimental preparations to observe these features are also discussed.

Magnetic and superconducting structures near twin boundaries in low doped Fe-pnictides

The effects of twin boundaries (TBs) on the complex interaction between magnetism and superconductivity in slightly electron-doped Ba(Ca)(FeAs)$_2$ superconductors are investigated. The spatial distributions of the magnetic, superconducting and charge density orders near two different types of TBs are calculated. We find that TBs corresponding to a 90$^\circ$ lattice rotation in the a-b plane enable magnetic domain walls to form with only a small effective Coulomb interaction between valance electrons, and that superconductivity is enhanced at such TBs. Contrastingly, we find that superconductivity is suppressed at TBs corresponding to an asymmetrical placement of As atoms with respect to the Fe atoms in the a-b plane.
