s-Wave-Like excitation in the superconducting state of electron-doped cuprates with d-wave pairing

An intrinsic physical mechanism, based on the doping evolution of the Fermi surface (FS), is explored to reconcile the contradictory experimental results on the superconducting (SC) pairing symmetry in electron-doped cuprates. It is argued that the FS pocket around $(π/2,π/2)$ has not yet formed until doping reaches about the optimal value. Therefore, in the underdoped regime, even if the SC order parameter is $d$ wave which vanishes along the line $k_x=k_y$, the quasiparticle excitation gap is still finite and looks s-wave-like due to the absence of the FS across that line. This makes it possible, with d-wave SC pairing, to understand those experiments which evidenced the s-wave quasiparticle excitation. An explicit theory with consideration of both antiferromagnetic and SC orders is implemented to exhibit the FS evolution from underdoping to overdoping and associated with it the variations of the quasiparticle property, electronic density of states, and low temperature dependences of the physical quantities heat capacity and superfluid density.

Study of two-dimensional electron systems in the renormalized-ring-diagram approximation

With a super-high-efficient numerical algorithm, we are able to self-consistently calculate the Green's function in the renormalized-ring-diagram approximation for a two-dimensional electron system with long-range Coulomb interactions. The obtained ground-state energy is found to be in excellent agreement with that of the Monte Carlo simulation. The numerical results of the self-energy, the effective mass, the distribution function, and the renormalization factor of the Green's function for the coupling constants in the range $0 \le r_s \le 30$ are also presented.

Theory of antiferromagnetism in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors

On the basis of the Hubbard model, we present the formulation of antiferromagnetism in electron-doped cuprates using the fluctuation-exchange approach. Taking into account the spin fluctuations in combination with the impurity scattering effect due to the randomly distributed dopant-atoms, we investigate the magnetic properties of the system. It is shown that the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, the onset temperature of the pseudogap formation, the single particle spectral density, and the staggered magnetization obtained by the present approach are in very good agreement with the experimental results. The distribution function in momentum space at very low temperature is observed to differ significantly from that of the Fermi liquid. Also, we find zero-energy peak in the density of states (DOS) of the antiferromagnetic phase. This DOS peak is sharp in the low doping regime, and disappears near the optimal doping where the AF order becomes weak.

Fluctuation-Exchange Study of Antiferromagnetism in Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductors with Disorder

On the basis of the Hubbard model, we extend the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approach to investigating the properties of antiferromagnetic (AF) phase in electron-doped cuprate superconductors. Furthermore, by incorporating the effect of scatterings due to the disordered dopant-atoms into the FLEX formalism, our numerical results show that the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, the onset temperature of pseudogap due to spin fluctuations, the spectral density of the single particle near the Fermi surface, and the staggered magnetization in the AF phase as a function of electron doping can consistently account for the experimental measurements.

Local tunneling spectroscopy as signatures of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in s- and d-wave Superconductors

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states for two-dimensional s- and d-wave superconductors (s- and d-SC) are self-consistently studied under an in-plane magnetic field. While the stripe solution of the order parameter (OP) is found to have lower free energy in s-SC, a square lattice solution appears to be energetically more favorable in the case of d-SC. At certain symmetric sites, we find that the features in the local density of states (LDOS) can be ascribed to two types of bound states. We also show that the LDOS maps for d-SC exhibit bias-energy-dependent checkerboard patterns. These characteristics can serve as signatures of the FFLO states.

Theory of Phonon Hall Effect in Paramagnetic Dielectrics

Based upon spin-lattice interaction, we propose a theoretical model for the phonon Hall effect in paramagnetic dielectrics. The thermal Hall conductivity is calculated by using the Kubo formula. Our theory reproduces the essential experimental features of the phonon Hall effect discovered recently in ionic dielectric Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$, including the sign, magnitude and linear magnetic field dependence of the thermal Hall conductivity.

Nonmonotonic gap in the coexisting antiferromagnetic and superconducting state for electron-doped cuprate superconductors

We argue that the experimentally observed nonmonotonic gap in electron-doped cuprates at optimal doping is the lowest quasiparticle excitation energy in the coexisting antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) state. The idea is implemented by studying the coexistence of AF and SC orders with the t-t'-t''-J model. Although the pairing gap itself is assumed to be the simplest $d$ wave which is monotonic, we have found that the quasiparticle excitation gap in the coexisting state is nonmonotonic, with the maxima around the hot spots where the Fermi surface is missing due to the AF gap. Within the same framework of the coexisting state the spectral function is also calculated at optimal doping. The obtained results are all consistent with experiments.

Nondissipative Spin Hall Effect via Quantized Edge Transport

The spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron system on honeycomb lattice with both intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit couplings is studied numerically. Integer quantized spin Hall conductance is obtained at zero Rashba coupling limit when electron Fermi energy lies in the energy gap created by the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, in agreement with recent theoretical prediction. While nonzero Rashba coupling destroys electron spin conservation, the spin Hall conductance is found to remain near the quantized value, being insensitive to disorder scattering, until the energy gap collapses with increasing the Rashba coupling. We further show that the charge transport through counterpropagating spin-polarized edge channels is well quantized, which is associated with a topological invariant of the system.

Doping dependence of the electron-doped cuprate superconductors from the antiferromagnetic properties of the Hubbard model

Within the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson approach, we have studied the antiferromagnetic (AF) properties for the $t$-$t'$-$t''$-$U$ model applied to electron-doped cuprate superconductors. Due to inclusion of spin fluctuations the AF order decreases with doping much faster than obtained in the Hartree-Fock theory. Under an intermediate {\it constant} $U$ the calculated doping evolution of the spectral intensity has satisfactorily reproduced the experimental results, without need of a strongly doping-dependent $U$ as argued earlier. This may reconcile a discrepancy suggested in recent studies on photoemission and optical conductivity.

Current induced local spin polarization due to the spin-orbit coupling in a two dimensional narrow strip

The current induced local spin polarization due to weak Rashba spin-orbit coupling in narrow strip is studied. In the presence of longitudinal charge current, local spin polarizations appear in the sample. The spin polarization perpendicular to the plane has opposite sign near the two edges. The in-plane spin polarization in the direction perpendicular to the sample edges also appears, but does not change sign across the sample. From our scaling analysis based on increasing the strip width, the out-of-plane spin polarization is important mainly in a system of mesoscopic size, and thus appears not to be associated with the spin-Hall effect in bulk samples.

Spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic phase for electron-doped cuprate superconductors

Based on the $t$-$t'$-$t''$-$J$ model we have calculated the dynamical spin susceptibilities in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase for electron-doped cuprates, by use of the slave-boson mean-field theory and random phase approximation. Various results for the susceptibilities versus energy and momentum have been shown at different dopings. At low energy, except the collective spin-wave mode around $(π,π)$ and 0, we have primarily observed that new resonance peaks will appear around $(0.3π,0.7π)$ and equivalent points with increasing doping, which are due to the particle-hole excitations between the two AF bands. The peaks are pronounced in the transverse susceptibility but not in the longitudinal one. These features are predicted for neutron scattering measurements.

Spin-Hall Effect in Two-Dimensional Electron Systems with Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling and Disorder

Using the four-terminal Landauer-Büttiker formula and Green's function approach, we calculate numerically the spin-Hall conductance in a two-dimensional junction system with the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling and disorder. We find that the spin-Hall conductance can be much greater or smaller than the universal value $e/8π$, depending on the magnitude of the SO coupling, the electron Fermi energy and the disorder strength. The spin-Hall conductance does not vanish with increasing sample size for a wide range of disorder strength. Our numerical calculation reveals that a nonzero SO coupling can induce electron delocalization for disorder strength smaller than a critical value, and the nonvanishing spin-Hall effect appears mainly in the metallic regime.

Impurity-induced Local Density of States in a D-wave Superconductor Carrying a Supercurrent

The local density of states (LDOS) and its Fourier component induced by a unitary impurity in a supercurrent-carrying d-wave superconductor are investigated. Both of these quantities possess a reflection symmetry about the line passing through the impurity site and along the supercurrent if it is applied along the antinodal or nodal direction. With increasing supercurrent, both the coherence and resonant peaks in the LDOS are suppressed and slightly broadened. Under a supercurrent along the antinodal direction, the coherence peaks split into double peaks. The modulation wavevectors associated with elastic scatterings of quasiparticles by the defect from one constant-energy piece of the Fermi surface to another are displayed as bright or dark spots in the Fourier space of the LDOS image, and they may be suppressed or enhanced, and shifted depending on the applied current and the bias voltage.

Study of gossamer superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the t-J-U model

The d-wave superconductivity (dSC) and antiferromagnetism are analytically studied in a renormalized mean field theory for a two dimensional t-J model plus an on-site repulsive Hubbard interaction $U$. The purpose of introducing the $U$ term is to partially impose the no double occupancy constraint by employing the Gutzwiller approximation. The phase diagrams as functions of doping $δ$ and $U$ are studied. Using the standard value of $t/J=3.0$ and in the large $U$ limit, we show that the antiferromagnetic (AF) order emerges and coexists with the dSC in the underdoped region below the doping $δ\sim0.1$. The dSC order parameter increases from zero as the doping increases and reaches a maximum near the optimal doping $δ\sim0.15$. In the small $U$ limit, only the dSC order survives while the AF order disappears. As $U$ increased to a critical value, the AF order shows up and coexists with the dSC in the underdoped regime. At half filing, the system is in the dSC state for small $U$ and becomes an AF insulator for large $U$. Within the present mean field approach, We show that the ground state energy of the coexistent state is always lower than that of the pure dSC state.

The temperature dependence of the local tunnelling conductance in cuprate superconductors with competing AF order

Based on the $t-t'-U-V$ model with proper chosen parameters for describing the cuprate superconductors, it is found that near the optimal doping at low temperature ($T$), only the pure d-wave superconductivity ($d$SC) prevails and the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is completely suppressed. At higher $T$, the AF order with stripe modulation and the accompanying charge order may emerge, and they could exist above the $d$SC transition temperature. We calculate the local differential tunnelling conductance (LDTC) from the local density of states (LDOS) and show that their energy variations are rather different from each other as $T$ increases. Although the calculated modulation periodicity in the LDTC/LDOS and bias energy dependence of the Fourier amplitude of LDTC in the "pseudogap" region are in good agreement with the recent STM experiment [Vershinin $et al.$, Science {\bf 303}, 1995 (2004)], we point out that some of the energy dependent features in the LDTC do not represent the intrinsic characteristics of the sample.

Fermi surface evolution in the antiferromagnetic state for the electron-doped t-t'-t''-J model

By use of the slave-boson mean-field approach, we have studied the electron-doped t-t'-t''-J model in the antiferromagnetic (AF) state. It is found that at low doping the Fermi surface (FS) pockets appear around $(\pmπ,0)$ and $(0,\pmπ)$, and upon increasing doping the other ones will form around $(\pm{π\over 2},\pm{π\over 2})$. The evolution of the FS with doping as well as the calculated spectral weight are consistent with the experimental results.

LDOS modulations in cuprate superconductors with competing AF order: the temperature effect

Based upon a phenomenological $t-t'-U-V$ model and using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we found that near the optimal doping $δ=0.15$ at low temperature ($T$), only the pure d-wave superconductivity (dSC) prevails and the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is completely suppressed. However, at higher $T$ the AF order with stripe modulation and the accompanying charge density wave (CDW) emerge, and they could exist even above the superconducting transition temperature. This implies that the existence of the CDW depends critically on the presence of the AF order, not so much on the dSC. The LDOS (local density of states) image indicates that the stripe modulation has an energy independent spacing of $5a/4a$ spreading over a $24a \times 48a$ lattice, corresponding to an average periodicity $4.8a$. This result may be relevant to the recent STM experiment [Vershinin $et al.$, Science {\bf 303}, 1995 (2004)].

Spatial Distribution of LDOS in Cuprate Superconductors With Magnetic-Field-Induced Stripe Modulation

A phenomenological model defined in a two dimensional lattice is employed to investigate the d-wave superconductivity and the competing antiferromagnetic order in cuprate superconductors. Near the optimally doped regime, we show that it is possible to induce the spin density wave (SDW) and the accompanying charge density wave (CDW) orders with stripe modulations by applying a magnetic field. The periods of the magnetic field induced SDW and CDW are $8a$ and $4a$, respectively. The spatial profiles of the local density of states (LDOS) at various bias energies have also been numerically studied. Near and beyond the energies of the vortex core states, we found that the LDOS may display the CDW stripe-like modulation throughout the whole magnetic unit cell. For energies closer to the zero bias, the stripes appear to be rather localized to the vortex. The intensity of the integrated spectrum of the LDOS shows that the strength of the stripe modulation is decaying away from the vortex core. This feature is in good agreement with STM experiments. The case for the magnetic-field induced SDW/CDW with 4-fold symmetry has also been studied.
