Local Density of States in a d-wave Superconductor with Stripe-Like Modulations and a Strong Impurity

Using an effective Hamiltonian with d-wave superconductivity (dSC) and competing antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions, we show that weak and one-dimensionally modulated dSC, spin density wave (SDW) and charge density wave (CDW) could coexist in the ground state configuration. With proper parameters, the SDW order exhibits a period of 8a, while for dSC and CDW orders the period is 4a. The local density of states (LDOS), which probing the behavior of quasiparticle excitations, is found to have the identical stripe-like structure as those in dSC and CDW orders. We point out that any energy dependent modulations should come from the scatterings of the quasiparticles from weak defects. The LDOS as a function of the bias voltage are showing two small bumps within the superconducting coherence peaks, a signature of presence of the stripes. When a strong impurity like Zn is placed in such a system, the LDOS at its nearest neighboring sites are suppressed at the zero bias by the local AF order and show a double-peak structure.

Conductance Characteristics between a Normal Metal and a Superconductor Carrying a Supercurrent

The low-temperature conductance (G) characteristics between a normal metal and a clean superconductor (S) carrying a supercurrent $I_s$ parallel to the interface is theoretically investigated. Increasing $I_s$ causes lowering and broadening of (1) coherence peaks of s-wave S, and d-wave S at (100) contact, (2) midgap-states-induced zero-bias conductance peak for d-wave S at (110) contact, and (3) Andreev-reflection-induced enhancement of $G$ within the gap near the metallic-contact limit. Novel features found include a current-induced central peak and a three-humped structure at intermediate barrier strength, etc.

Impurity effects on s+g-wave superconductivity in borocarbides Y(Lu)Ni_2B_2C

Recently a hybrid s+g-wave pairing is proposed to describe the experimental observation for a nodal structure of the superconducting gap in borocarbide YNi$_2$B$_2$C and possibly LuNi$_2$B$_2$C. In this paper the impurity effects on the s+g-wave superconductivity are studied in both Born and unitarity limit. The quasiparticle density of states and thermodynamics are calculated. It is found that the nodal excitations in the clean system are immediately prohibited by impurity scattering and a finite energy gap increases quickly with the impurity scattering rate. This leads to an activated behavior in the temperature dependence of the specific heat. Qualitative agreement with the experimental results is shown. Comparison with d-wave and some anisotropic s-wave studied previously is also made.

States of Local Moment Induced by Nonmagnetic Impurities in Cuprate Superconductors

By using a model Hamiltonian with d-wave superconductivity and competing antiferromagnetic (AF) orders, the local staggered magnetization distribution due to nonmagnetic impurities in cuprate superconductors is investigated. From this, the net magnetic moment induced by a single or double impurities can be obtained. We show that the net moment induced by a single impurity corresponds to a local spin with S_z=0, or 1/2 depending on the strength of the AF interaction and the impurity scattering. When two impurities are placed at the nearest neighboring sites, the net moment is always zero. For two unitary impurities at the next nearest neighboring sites, and at sites separated by a Cu-ion site, the induced net moment has S_z=0, or 1/2, or 1. The consequence of these results on experiments will be discussed.

The Energy-dependent Checkerboard Patterns in Cuprate Superconductors

Motivated by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments [J. E. Hoffman {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 297}, 1148 (2002); K. McElroy {\it et al.}, Nature (to be published)], we investigate the real space local density of states (LDOS) induced by weak disorder in a d-wave superconductor. We first present the energy dependent LDOS images around a single weak defect at several energies, and then point out that the experimentally observed checkerboard pattern in the LDOS could be understood as a result of quasiparticle interferences by randomly distributed defects. It is also shown that the checkerboard pattern oriented along $45^0$ to the Cu-O bonds at low energies would transform to that oriented parallel to the Cu-O bonds at higher energies. This result is consistent with the experiments.

Temperature dependence of Vortex Charges in High Temperature Superconductors

Using a model Hamiltonian with d-wave superconductivity and competing antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions, the temperature (T) dependence of the vortex charge in high T_c superconductors is investigated by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The strength of the induced AF order inside the vortex core is T dependent. The vortex charge could be negative when the AF order with sufficient strength is present at low temperatures. At higher temperatures, the AF order may be completely suppressed and the vortex charge becomes positive. A first order like transition in the T dependent vortex charge is seen near the critical temperature T_{AF}. For underdoped sample, the spatial profiles of the induced spin-density wave and charge-density wave orders could have stripe like structures at T < T_s, and change to two-dimensional isotropic ones at T > T_s. As a result, a vortex charge discontinuity occurs at T_s.

Theory of the NMR relaxation rates in cuprate superconductors with field induced antiferromagnetic order

Based on a model Hamiltonian with a d-wave pairing interaction and a competing antiferromagnetic interaction, we numerically study the site dependence of the nuclear spin resonance (NMR) relaxation rate T_1^{-1} as a function of temperature for a d-wave superconductor(DSC) with magnetic field induced spin density wave (SDW) order. In the presence of the induced SDW, we find that there exists no simple direct relationship between NMR signal rate T_1^{-1} and low energy local density of states while these two quantities are linearly proportional to each other in a pure DSC. In the vortex core region, T_1^{-1} on ^{17}O site may exhibit a double-peak behavior, one sharp and one broad, as the temperature is increased to the superconductivity transition temperature T_c, in contrast to a single broad peak for a pure DSC. The existence of the sharp peak corresponds to the disappearance of the induced SDW above a certain temperature T_{AF} which is assumed to be considerably lower than T_c. We also show the differences between T_1^{-1} on ^{17}O and that on ^{63}Cu as a function of lattice site at different temperatures and magnetic fields. Our results obtained from the scenario of the vortex with induced SDW is consistent with recent NMR and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.

Vortex Charges in High Temperature Superconductors

Based on an effective model Hamiltonian with competing antiferromagnetic (AF) and d-wave superconductivity (DSC) interactions, the vortex charge in high T_c superconductors is investigated by solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We found that the vortex charge is always negative when a sufficient strength of AF order is induced inside the vortex core, otherwise, the vortex charge is positive. By tuning the on-site Coulomb repulsion U or the doping parameter $δ$, a transition between the positive and negative vortex charges may occur. The vortex charge at optimal doping has also been studied as a function of magnetic field. Recent NMR and Hall effect experiments may be understood in terms of the present results. New imaging experiments should be able to probe the vortex charge directly.

Energy-Dependent LDOS Modulation in Cuprate Superconductors

Motivated by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiment [J. E. Hoffman, {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 297}, 1148 (2002)], we investigate the energy-dependent modulation induced by a weak and extended defect in a d-wave superconductor. The Fourier component of the local density of states (LDOS) is calculated up to the first order in the defect parameters. Our numerically obtained image maps together with the energy-dependent charge modulation wave vectors at different dopings exhibit the essential features as those measured by the experiment. We also predict new modulation wave vectors in the first Brillouin zone. Hopefully, they could be verified by future STM experiments.

Numerical Study of Transition to Stripe Phases in High Temperature Superconductors Under a Strong Magnetic Field

The nature of spin density wave (SDW) and charge density wave (CDW) in the mixed state of high T_c superconductors (HTS) is investigated by using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and an effective model Hamiltonian with competing SDW and d-wave superconductivity interactions. We show that there exists a critical onsite Coulomb interaction U_c. For optimally doped sample, a two dimensional SDW and CDW modulations are induced for U < U_c while SDW and CDW orders become antiferromagnetic (AF) and charge stripes for U > U_c. These stripe orders are stabilized and enhanced near the vortex cores. The wavelengths of the AF stripes and charge stripes are found respectively to be 8 a and 4 a with a as the lattice constant. We show that our results could be applied to understand several recent experiments on HTS.

Essential Role of the Cooperative Lattice Distortion in the Charge, Orbital and Spin Ordering in doped Manganites

The role of lattice distortion in the charge, orbital and spin ordering in half doped manganites has been investigated. For fixed magnetic ordering, we show that the cooperative lattice distortion stabilize the experimentally observed ordering even when the strong on-site electronic correlation is taken into account. Furthermore, without invoking the magnetic interactions, the cooperative lattice distortion alone may lead to the correct charge and orbital ordering including the charge stacking effect, and the magnetic ordering can be the consequence of such a charge and orbital ordering. We propose that the cooperative nature of the lattice distortion is essential to understand the complicated charge, orbital and spin ordering observed in doped manganites.

Theory of Magnetic Field Induced Spin Density Wave in High Temperature Superconductors

The induction of spin density wave (SDW) and charge density wave (CDW) orderings in the mixed state of high $T_c$ superconductors (HTS) is investigated by using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations based upon an effective model Hamiltonian with competing SDW and d-wave superconductivity interactions. For optimized doping sample, the modulation of the induced SDW and its associated CDW is determined by the vortex lattice and their patterns obey the four-fold symmetry. By deceasing doping level, both SDW and CDW show quasi-one dimensional like behavior, and the CDW has a period just half that of the SDW along one direction. From the calculation of the local density of states (LDOS), we found that the majority of the quasi-particles inside the vortex core are localized. All these results are consistent with several recent experiments on HTS.

Superconducting Transition in Doped Antiferromagnet

We investigate the superconducting transition in a doped antiferromagnet. Based on the phase string framework of the t-J model, an effective model describing the phase-coherence transition is obtained and is studied through duality transformation and renormalization group treatment . We show that such a topological transition is controlled by spin excitations, with the transition temperature determined by a characterisitic spin excitation energy. The existence of an Ising-like long range order of staggered current loops is also discussed.

High Angular Momentum Core States and Impurity Effects in the Mixed State of d-Wave Superconductors

The local quasiparticle spectra around the vortex core of a d-wave superconductor in the mixed state is studied by solving the lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. It is shown that in addition to the zero-energy states, there also exist core states of high angular momentum. A nonmagnetic unitary impurity sitting at the core center is nondestructive to these core states and the zero-energy resonant state induced by itself is still visible in the local quasiparticle spectrum. The calculated imaging shows a fourfold ``star'' shape of the local density of states whose orientation is energy dependent. It is also found that, although the zero-energy states are extended, the core states of finite energy level could be localized.

C-axis Response of a High-T_{c} Superconductor with D-Density Wave Order

The microscopic origin of the pseudogap state which exists in the underdoped cuprates remains unknown. The $c$-axis properties in the pseudogap regime are particularly anomalous. We use a recently proposed model of a $d$-density wave which leads to staggered currents and the doubling of the unit cell to investigate the $c$-axis kinetic energy and the optical sum rule. The density of states expected in the model is also considered.

Quasiparticle States around a Nonmagnetic Impurity in D-Density-Wave State of High-$T_c$ Cuprates

Recently Chakravarty {\em et al.} proposed an ordered $d$-density wave (DDW) state as an explanation of the pseudogap phase in underdoped high-temperature cuprates. We study the competition between the DDW and superconducting ordering based on an effective mean-field Hamiltonian. We are mainly concerned with the effect of the DDW ordering on the electronic state around a single nonmagnetic impurity. We find that a single subgap resonance peak appears in the local density of state around the impurity. In the unitary limit, the position of this resonance peak is always located at $E_r=-μ$ with respect to the Fermi energy. This result is dramatically different from the case of the pure superconducting state for which the impurity resonant energy is approximately pinned at the Fermi level. This can be used to probe the existence of the DDW ordering in cuprates.

Quasiparticle States at a d-Wave Vortex Core in High-Tc Superconductors: Induction of Local Spin Density Wave Order

The local density of states (LDOS) at one of the vortex lattice cores in a high Tc superconductor is studied by using a self-consistent mean field theory including interactions for both antiferromagnetism (AF) and d-wave superconductivity (DSC). The parameters are chosen in such a way that in an optimally doped sample the AF order is completely suppressed while DSC prevails. In the mixed state, we show that the local AF-like SDW order appears near the vortex core and acts as an effective local magnetic field on the quasiparticles. As a result, the LDOS at the core exhibits a double-peak structure near the Fermi level that is in good agreement with the STM observations on YBCO and BSCCO. The presence of local AF order near the votex core is also consistent with the recent neutron scattering experiment on LSCO.

Novel Quantum Spin Assisted Tunneling in Half Metallic Manganite Tunnel Junctions

The electron tunneling in half metallic manganite tunnel junctions is studied by using a quantum mechanically treated double exchange model. We show that the stimulation of spin excitations, caused by the strong Hund's coupling between the conduction $e_g$ electrons and the localized quantum spins of the manganite ions, would assist electrons to tunnel through the junction even with the antiparallel aligned magnetizations of the electrodes. This mechanism gives rise to an extra tunnel conductance, in addition to that predicted by Julliere's model. Our theory is in good agreement with the voltage dependence of the tunnel conductance in manganite tunnel junctions observed by experiments.
