The $ρ$ parameter at three loops and elliptic integrals

We describe the analytic calculation of the master integrals required to compute the two-mass three-loop corrections to the $ρ$ parameter. In particular, we present the calculation of the master integrals for which the corresponding differential equations do not factorize to first order. The homogeneous solutions to these differential equations are obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions at rational argument. These hypergeometric functions can further be mapped to complete elliptic integrals, and the inhomogeneous solutions are expressed in terms of a new class of integrals of combined iterative non-iterative nature.

Controlled ordering of topological charges in an exciton-polariton chain

We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, controlled loading of an exciton-polariton vortex chain into a 1D array of trapping potentials. Switching between two types of vortex chains, with topological charges of the same or alternating sign, is realised by means of appropriate shaping of an incoherent pump beam that drives the system to the regime of bosonic condensation. In analogy to spin chains, these vortex sequences realise either a "ferromagnetic" or an "anti-ferromagnetic" order, whereby the role of spin is played by the orbital angular momentum. The "ferromagnetic" ordering of vortices is associated with the formation of a persistent chiral current. Our results pave the way for controlled creation of nontrivial distributions of orbital angular momentum and topological order in a periodic exciton-polariton system.

Evolution of temporal coherence in confined polariton condensates

We study the influence of spatial confinement on the second-order temporal coherence of the emission from a semiconductor microcavity in the strong coupling regime. The confinement, provided by etched micropillars, has a favorable impact on the temporal coherence of solid state quasi-condensates that evolve in our device above threshold. By fitting the experimental data with a microscopic quantum theory based on a quantum jump approach, we scrutinize the influence of pump power and confinement and find that phonon-mediated transitions are enhanced in the case of a confined structure, in which the modes split into a discrete set. By increasing the pump power beyond the condensation threshold, temporal coherence significantly improves in devices with increased spatial confinement, as revealed in the transition from thermal to coherent statistics of the emitted light.

Photon number-resolved measurement of an exciton-polariton condensate

We measure the full photon-number distribution emitted from a Bose condensate of microcavity exciton-polaritons confined in a micropillar cavity. The statistics are acquired by means of a photonnumber resolving transition edge sensor. We directly observe that the photon-number distribution evolves with the non-resonant optical excitation power from geometric to quasi-Poissonian statistics, which is canonical for a transition from a thermal to a coherent state. Moreover, the photon-number distribution allows evaluating the higher-order photon correlations, shedding further light on the coherence formation and phase transition of the polariton condensate. The experimental data is analyzed in terms of thermal coherent states which allows one to directly extract the thermal and coherent fraction from the measured distributions. These results pave the way for a full understanding of the contribution of interactions in light-matter condensates in the coherence buildup at threshold.

Heavy Quark Form Factors at Three Loops in the Planar Limit

We compute the color-planar and complete light quark non-singlet contributions to the heavy quark form factors in the case of the axialvector, scalar and pseudoscalar currents at three loops in perturbative QCD. We evaluate the master integrals applying a new method based on differential equations for general bases, which is applicable for all first order factorizing systems. The analytic results are expressed in terms of harmonic polylogarithms and real-valued cyclotomic harmonic polylogarithms.

The Variable Flavor Number Scheme at Next-to-Leading Order

We present the matching relations of the variable flavor number scheme at next-to-leading order, which are of importance to define heavy quark partonic distributions for the use at high energy colliders such as Tevatron and the LHC. The consideration of the two-mass effects due to both charm and bottom quarks, having rather similar masses, are important. These effects have not been considered in previous investigations. Numerical results are presented for a wide range of scales. We also present the corresponding contributions to the structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$.

The Two-mass Contribution to the Three-Loop Gluonic Operator Matrix Element $A_{gg,Q}^{(3)}$

We calculate the two-mass QCD contributions to the massive operator matrix element $A_{gg,Q}$ at $\mathcal{O} (α_s^3)$ in analytic form in Mellin $N$- and $z$-space, maintaining the complete dependence on the heavy quark mass ratio. These terms are important ingredients for the matching relations of the variable flavor number scheme in the presence of two heavy quark flavors, such as charm and bottom. In Mellin $N$-space the result is given in the form of nested harmonic, generalized harmonic, cyclotomic and binomial sums, with arguments depending on the mass ratio. The Mellin inversion of these quantities to $z$-space gives rise to generalized iterated integrals with square root valued letters in the alphabet, depending on the mass ratio as well. Numerical results are presented.

The Heavy Quark Form Factors at Two Loops

We compute the two-loop QCD corrections to the heavy quark form factors in case of the vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudo-scalar currents up to second order in the dimensional parameter $ε= (4-D)/2$. These terms are required in the renormalization of the higher order corrections to these form factors.

The stellar content of the XMM-Newton slew survey

We present a detailed analysis of the stellar content of the current version of the XMM-Newton slew survey (XMMSL2). Since stars emit only a small fraction of their total luminosity in the X-ray band, the stellar XMMSL2 sources ought to have relatively bright optical counterparts. Therefore the stellar identifications are obtained by an automatic crossmatch of the XMMSL2 catalog with the first Gaia data release (Gaia DR1), the 2MASS and the Tycho2 catalogs. The reliability of this procedure is verified by a comparison with the individually classified Einstein Observatory medium sensitivity survey X-ray sources and by a crossmatch with the Chandra Source Catalog. We identify 6815 of the 23252 unique XMMSL2 sources to be stellar sources, while 893 sources are flagged as unreliable. For every counterpart a matching probability is estimated based upon the distance between the XMMSL2 source and the counterpart. Given this matching probability the sample is expected to be reliable to 96.7 % and complete to 96.3 %. The sample contains stars of all spectral types and luminosity classes, with late-type dwarfs having the largest share. For many stellar sources the fractional contribution of the X-ray band to the total energy output is found above the saturation limit of previous studies ($L_\mathrm{X}/L_\mathrm{bol}=10^{-3}$), because the XMMSL2 sources are more affected by flares due to their short exposure times of typically 6 s. A comparison with the "Second ROSAT all-sky survey (2RXS) source catalog" shows that about 25 % of the stellar XMMSL2 sources are previously unknown X-ray sources. The results of our identification procedure can be accessed via VizieR.

The massive 3-loop operator matrix elements with two masses and the generalized variable flavor number scheme

We report on our latest results in the calculation of the two--mass contributions to 3--loop operator matrix elements (OMEs). These OMEs are needed to compute the corresponding contributions to the deep-inealstic scattering structure functions and to generalize the variable flavor number scheme by including both charm and bottom quarks. We present the results for the non-singlet and $A_{gq,Q}$ OMEs, and compare the size of their contribution relative to the single mass case. Results for the gluonic OME $A_{gg,Q}$ are given in the physical case, going beyond those presented in a previous publication where scalar diagrams were computed. We also discuss our recently published two--mass contribution to the pure singlet OME, and present an alternative method of calculating the corresponding diagrams.

Iterative and Iterative-Noniterative Integral Solutions in 3-Loop Massive QCD Calculations

Various of the single scale quantities in massless and massive QCD up to 3-loop order can be expressed by iterative integrals over certain classes of alphabets, from the harmonic polylogarithms to root-valued alphabets. Examples are the anomalous dimensions to 3-loop order, the massless Wilson coefficients and also different massive operator matrix elements. Starting at 3-loop order, however, also other letters appear in the case of massive operator matrix elements, the so called iterative non-iterative integrals, which are related to solutions based on complete elliptic integrals or any other special function with an integral representation that is definite but not a Volterra-type integral. After outlining the formalism leading to iterative non-iterative integrals,we present examples for both of these cases with the 3-loop anomalous dimension $γ_{qg}^{(2)}$ and the structure of the principle solution in the iterative non-interative case of the 3-loop QCD corrections to the $ρ$-parameter.

Heavy Flavor Wilson Coefficients in Deep-Inelastic Scattering: Recent Results

We present recent analytic results for the 3-loop corrections to the massive operator matrix element $A_{Qg}^{(3)}$for further color factors. These results have been obtained using the method of arbitrarily large moments. We also give an overview on the results which were obtained solving all difference and differential equations for the corresponding master integrals that factorize at first order.

The two-mass contribution to the three-loop pure singlet operator matrix element

We present the two-mass QCD contributions to the pure singlet operator matrix element at three loop order in x-space. These terms are relevant for calculating the structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ at $O(α_s^3)$ as well as for the matching relations in the variable flavor number scheme and the heavy quark distribution functions at the same order. The result for the operator matrix element is given in terms of generalized iterated integrals that include square root letters in the alphabet, depending also on the mass ratio through the main argument. Numerical results are presented.

Observation of the transition from lasing driven by a bosonic to a fermionic reservoir in a GaAs quantum well microcavity

We show that, by monitoring the free carrier reservoir in a GaAs-based quantum well microcavity under nonresonant pulsed optical pumping, lasing supported by a fermionic reservoir (photon lasing) can be distinguished from lasing supported by a reservoir of bosons (polariton lasing). Carrier densities are probed by measuring the photocurrent between lateral contacts deposited directly on the quantum wells of a microcavity that are partially exposed by wet chemical etching. We identify two clear thresholds in the input-output characteristic of the photoluminescence signal which can be attributed to polariton and photon lasing, respectively. The power dependence of the probed photocurrent shows a distinct kink at the threshold power for photon lasing due to an increased radiative recombination of free carriers as stimulated emission into the cavity mode sets in. At the polariton lasing threshold, on the other hand, the nonlinear increase of the luminescence is caused by stimulated scattering of exciton polaritons to the ground state which do not contribute directly to the photocurrent.

Observation of macroscopic valley-polarized monolayer exciton-polaritons at room temperature

In this letter, we address the chiral properties of valley exciton-polaritons in a monolayer of WS2 in the regime of strong light-matter coupling with a Tamm-Plasmon resonance. We observe that the valley polarization, which manifests in the circular polarization of the emitted photoluminescence, is strongly enhanced in comparison to bare WS2 monolayers, and can even be observed under non-resonant excitation at ambient conditions. We study the relaxation and decay dynamics of exciton-polaritons in our device, and present a microscopic model to explain the wave vector-dependent valley depolarization as an interplay of bright and dark states, electron-hole exchange interaction and the linear polarization splitting inherent to the microcavity.

Pump-power-driven mode switching in a microcavity device and its relation to Bose-Einstein condensation

We investigate the switching of the coherent emission mode of a bimodal microcavity device, occurring when the pump power is varied. We compare experimental data to theoretical results and identify the underlying mechanism to be based on the competition between the effective gain on the one hand and the intermode kinetics on the other. When the pumping is ramped up, above a threshold the mode with the largest effective gain starts to emit coherent light, corresponding to lasing. In contrast, in the limit of strong pumping it is the intermode kinetics that determines which mode acquires a large occupation and shows coherent emission. We point out that this latter mechanism is akin to the equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation of massive bosons. Thus, the mode switching in our microcavity device can be viewed as a minimal instance of Bose-Einstein condensation of photons. We, moreover, show that the switching from one cavity mode to the other occurs always via an intermediate phase where both modes are emitting coherent light and that it is associated with both superthermal intensity fluctuations and strong anticorrelations between both modes.
