Iterated Elliptic and Hypergeometric Integrals for Feynman Diagrams

We calculate 3-loop master integrals for heavy quark correlators and the 3-loop QCD corrections to the $ρ$-parameter. They obey non-factorizing differential equations of second order with more than three singularities, which cannot be factorized in Mellin-$N$ space either. The solution of the homogeneous equations is possible in terms of convergent close integer power series as $_2F_1$ Gauß hypergeometric functions at rational argument. In some cases, integrals of this type can be mapped to complete elliptic integrals at rational argument. This class of functions appears to be the next one arising in the calculation of more complicated Feynman integrals following the harmonic polylogarithms, generalized polylogarithms, cyclotomic harmonic polylogarithms, square-root valued iterated integrals, and combinations thereof, which appear in simpler cases. The inhomogeneous solution of the corresponding differential equations can be given in terms of iterative integrals, where the new innermost letter itself is not an iterative integral. A new class of iterative integrals is introduced containing letters in which (multiple) definite integrals appear as factors. For the elliptic case, we also derive the solution in terms of integrals over modular functions and also modular forms, using $q$-product and series representations implied by Jacobi's $\vartheta_i$ functions and Dedekind's $η$-function. The corresponding representations can be traced back to polynomials out of Lambert--Eisenstein series, having representations also as elliptic polylogarithms, a $q$-factorial $1/η^k(τ)$, logarithms and polylogarithms of $q$ and their $q$-integrals. Due to the specific form of the physical variable $x(q)$ for different processes, different representations do usually appear. Numerical results are also presented.

Temporally versatile polarization entanglement from Bragg-reflection waveguides

Bragg-reflection waveguides emitting broadband parametric down-conversion (PDC) have been proven to be well suited for the on-chip generation of polarization entanglement in a straightforward fashion [R. T. Horn et al., Sci. Rep. 3, 2314 (2013)]. Here, we investigate how the properties of the created states can be modified by controlling the relative temporal delay between the pair of photons created via PDC. Our results offer an easily accessible approach for changing the coherence of the polarization entanglement, in other words, to tune the phase of the off-diagonal elements of the density matrix. Furthermore, we provide valuable insight in the engineering of these states directly at the source.

Three Loop Massive Operator Matrix Elements and Asymptotic Wilson Coefficients with Two Different Masses

Starting at 3-loop order, the massive Wilson coefficients for deep-inelastic scattering and the massive operator matrix elements describing the variable flavor number scheme receive contributions of Feynman diagrams carrying quark lines with two different masses. In the case of the charm and bottom quarks, the usual decoupling of one heavy mass at a time no longer holds, since the ratio of the respective masses, $η= m_c^2/m_b^2 \sim 1/10$, is not small enough. Therefore, the usual variable flavor number scheme (VFNS) has to be generalized. The renormalization procedure in the two--mass case is different from the single mass case derived in \cite{Bierenbaum:2009mv}. We present the moments $N=2,4$ and $6$ for all contributing operator matrix elements, expanding in the ratio $η$. We calculate the analytic results for general values of the Mellin variable $N$ in the flavor non-singlet case, as well as for transversity and the matrix element $A_{gq}^{(3)}$. We also calculate the two-mass scalar integrals of all topologies contributing to the gluonic operator matrix element $A_{gg}$. As it turns out, the expansion in $η$ is usually inapplicable for general values of $N$. We therefore derive the result for general values of the mass ratio. From the single pole terms we derive, now in a two-mass calculation, the corresponding contributions to the 3-loop anomalous dimensions. We introduce a new general class of iterated integrals and study their relations and present special values. The corresponding functions are implemented in computer-algebraic form.

Exciton-Polariton Flows in Cross-Dimensional Junctions

We study the nonequilibrium exciton-polariton condensation in 1D to 0D and 1D to 2D junctions by means of non-resonant spectroscopy. The shape of our potential landscape allows to probe the resonant transmission of a propagating condensate between a quasi-1D waveguide and cylindrically symmetric states. We observe a distinct mode selection by varying the position of the non-resonant pump laser. Moreover, we study the the case of propagation from a localized trapped condensate state into a waveguide channel. Here, the choice of the position of the injection laser allows us to tune the output in the waveguide. Our measurements are supported by an accurate Ginzburg-Landau modeling of the system shining light on the underlying mechanisms.

Valley polarized relaxation and upconversion luminescence from Tamm-Plasmon Trion-Polaritons with a MoSe2 monolayer

Transition metal dichalcogenides represent an ideal testbed to study excitonic effects, spin-related phenomena and fundamental light-matter coupling in nanoscopic condensed matter systems. In particular, the valley degree of freedom, which is unique to such direct band gap monolayers with broken inversion symmetry, adds fundamental interest in these materials. Here, we implement a Tamm-plasmon structure with an embedded MoSe2 monolayer and study the formation of polaritonic quasi-particles. Strong coupling conditions between the Tamm-mode and the trion resonance of MoSe2 are established, yielding bright luminescence from the polaritonic ground state under non-resonant optical excitation. We demonstrate, that tailoring the electrodynamic environment of the monolayer results in a significantly increased valley polarization. This enhancement can be related to change in recombination dynamics shown in time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. We furthermore observe strong upconversion luminescence from resonantly excited polariton states in the lower polariton branch. This upconverted polariton luminescence is shown to preserve the valley polarization of the trion-polariton, which paves the way towards combining spin-valley physics and exciton scattering experiments.

Efficient deterministic giant photon phase shift from a single charged quantum dot

Solid-state quantum emitters have long been recognised as the ideal platform to realize integrated quantum photonic technologies. We use a self-assembled negatively charged QD in a low Q-factor photonic micropillar to demonstrate for the first time a key figure of merit for deterministic switching and spin-photon entanglement: a shift in phase of an input single photon of $>90^{o}$ with values of up to $2π/3$ ($120^{o}$) demonstrated. This $>π/2$ ($90^{o}$) measured value represents an important threshold: above this value input photons interact with the emitter deterministically. A deterministic photon-emitter interaction is the only viable scalable means to achieve several vital functionalities not possible in linear optics such as quantum switches and entanglement gates. Our experimentally determined value is limited by mode mismatch between the input laser and the cavity, QD spectral fluctuations and spin relaxation. We determine that up to $80\%$ of the collected photons have interacted with the QD and undergone a phase shift of $π$.

The Three-Loop Splitting Functions $P_{qg}^{(2)}$ and $P_{gg}^{(2, N_F)}$

We calculate the unpolarized twist-2 three-loop splitting functions $P_{qg}^{(2)}(x)$ and $P_{gg}^{(2,\rm N_F)}(x)$ and the associated anomalous dimensions using massive three-loop operator matrix elements. While we calculate $P_{gg}^{(2,\rm N_F)}(x)$ directly, $P_{qg}^{(2)}(x)$ is computed from 1200 even moments, without any structural prejudice, using a hierarchy of recurrences obtained for the corresponding operator matrix element. The largest recurrence to be solved is of order 12 and degree 191. We confirm results in the foregoing literature.

Controlling the gain contribution of background emitters in few-quantum-dot microlasers

We provide experimental and theoretical insight into single-emitter lasing effects in a quantum dot (QD)-microlaser under controlled variation of background gain provided by off-resonant discrete gain centers. For that purpose, we apply an advanced two-color excitation concept where the background gain contribution of off-resonant QDs can be continuously tuned by precisely balancing the relative excitation power of two lasers emitting at different wavelengths. In this way, by selectively exciting a single resonant QD and off-resonant QDs, we identify distinct single-QD signatures in the lasing characteristics and distinguish between gain contributions of a single resonant emitter and a countable number of off-resonant background emitters to the optical output of the microlaser. We address the important question whether single-QD lasing is feasible in experimentally accessible systems and show that, for the investigated microlaser, the single-QD gain needs to be supported by the background gain contribution of off-resonant QDs to reach the transition to lasing. Interestingly, while a single QD cannot drive the investigated micropillar into lasing, its relative contribution to the emission can be as high as 70% and it dominates the statistics of emitted photons in the intermediate excitation regime below threshold.

The interplay between excitons and trions in a monolayer of MoSe$_2$

We study the impact of a free carrier reservoir on the optical properties of excitonic and trionic complexes in a MoSe$_2$ monolayer at cryogenic temperatures. By applying photodoping via a non-resonant pump laser the electron density can be controlled in our sample and in turn the exciton and trion densities can be tuned. We find a significant increase of the trion binding energy in the presence of an induced electron gas both in power- and in time-resolved photoluminescence spectra. This behaviour is reproduced within the original variational approach that takes into account both screening and phase space filling effects.

Photon echoes from (In,Ga)As quantum dots embedded in a Tamm-plasmon microcavity

We report on the coherent optical response from an ensemble of (In,Ga)As quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a planar Tamm-plasmon microcavity with a quality factor of approx. 100. Significant enhancement of the light-matter interaction is demonstrated under selective laser excitation of those quantum dots which are in resonance with the cavity mode. The enhancement is manifested through Rabi oscillations of the photon echo, demonstrating coherent control of excitons with picosecond pulses at intensity levels more than an order of magnitude smaller as compared with bare quantum dots. The decay of the photon echo transients is weakly changed by the resonator indicating a small decrease of the coherence time $T_2$ which we attribute to the interaction with the electron plasma in the metal layer located close (40nm) to the QD layer. Simultaneously we see a reduction of the population lifetime $T_1$, inferred from the stimulated photon echo, due to an enhancement of the spontaneous emission by a factor of 2, which is attributed to the Purcell effect, while non-radiative processes are negligible as confirmed from time-resolved photoluminescence.

Photon-Statistics Excitation Spectroscopy of a Single Two Level System

We investigate the influence of the photon statistics on the excitation dynamics of a single two level system. A single semiconductor quantum dot represents the two level system and is resonantly excited either with coherent laser light, or excited with chaotic light, with photon statistics corresponding to that of thermal radiation. Experimentally, we observe a reduced absorption cross-section under chaotic excitation in the steady-state. In the transient regime, the Rabi oscillations observable under coherent excitation disappear under chaotic excitation. Likewise, in the emission spectrum the well-known Mollow triplet, which we observe under coherent drive, disappears under chaotic excitation. Our observations are fully consistent with theoretical predictions based on the semi-classical Bloch equation approach.

Emission from quantum-dot high- microcavities: transition from spontaneous emission to lasing and the effects of superradiant emitter coupling

Measured and calculated results are presented on the emission properties of a new class of emitters operating in the cavity quantum electrodynamics regime. The structures are based on high-finesse GaAs/AlAs micropillar cavities, each with an active medium consisting of a layer of InGaAs quantum dots and distinguishing feature of having substantial fraction of spontaneous emission channeled into one cavity mode (high-beta factor). This paper shows that the usual criterion for lasing with a conventional (low-beta factor) cavity, a sharp nonlinearity in an input-output curve accompanied by noticeable linewidth narrowing, has to be reinforced by the equal-time second-order photon autocorrelation function for confirming lasing. It will also show that the equal-time second-order photon autocorrelation function is useful for recognizing superradiance, a manifestation of the correlations possible in high- microcavities operating with quantum dots. In terms of consolidating the collected data and identifying the physics underlying laser action, both theory and experiment suggest a sole dependence on intracavity photon number. Evidence for this comes from all our measured and calculated data on emission coherence and fluctuation, for devices ranging from LEDs and cavity-enhanced LEDs to lasers, lying on the same two curves: one for linewidth narrowing versus intracavity photon number and the other for g(2)(0) versus intracavity photon number.

Uncovering dispersion properties in semiconductor waveguides to study photon-pair generation

We investigate the dispersion properties of ridge Bragg-reflection waveguides to deduce their phasematching characteristics. These are crucial for exploiting them as sources of parametric down-conversion (PDC). In order to estimate the phasematching bandwidth we first determine the group refractive indices of the interacting modes via Fabry-Perot experiments in two distant wavelength regions. Second, by measuring the spectra of the emitted PDC photons we gain access to their group index dispersion. Our results offer a simple approach for determining the PDC process parameters in the spectral domain and provide an important feedback for designing such sources, especially in the broadband case.

The Asymptotic 3-Loop Heavy Flavor Corrections to the Charged Current Structure Functions $F_L^{W^+-W^-}(x,Q^2)$ and $F_2^{W^+-W^-}(x,Q^2)$

We calculate the massive Wilson coefficients for the heavy flavor contributions to the non-singlet charged current deep-inelastic scattering structure functions $F_L^{W^+}(x,Q^2)-F_L^{W^-}(x,Q^2)$ and $F_2^{W^+}(x,Q^2)-F_2^{W^-}(x,Q^2)$ in the asymptotic region $Q^2 \gg m^2$ to 3-loop order in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at general values of the Mellin variable $N$ and the momentum fraction $x$. Besides the heavy quark pair production, also the single heavy flavor excitation $s \rightarrow c$ contributes. Numerical results are presented for the charm quark contributions and consequences on the unpolarized Bjorken sum rule and Adler sum rule are discussed.

Circularly polarized lasing in chiral modulated semiconductor microcavity with GaAs quantum wells

We report the elliptically, close to circularly polarized lasing at $\hbarω= 1.473$ and 1.522 eV from an AlAs/AlGaAs Bragg microcavity with 12 GaAs quantum wells in the active region and chiral-etched upper distributed Bragg refractor under optical pump at room temperature. The advantage of using the chiral photonic crystal with a large contrast of dielectric permittivities is its giant optical activity, allowing to fabricate a very thin half-wave plate, with a thickness of the order of the emitted light wavelength, and to realize the monolithic control of circular polarization.

Visualising Berry phase and diabolical points in a quantum exciton-polariton billiard

Diabolical points (degeneracies) can naturally occur in spectra of two-dimensional quantum systems and classical wave resonators due to simple symmetries. Geometric Berry phase is associated with these spectral degeneracies. Here, we demonstrate a diabolical point and the corresponding Berry phase in the spectrum of hybrid light-matter quasiparticles -- exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. It is well known that sufficiently strong optical pumping can drive exciton-polaritons to quantum degeneracy, whereby they form a macroscopically populated quantum coherent state similar to a Bose-Einstein condensate. By pumping a microcavity with a spatially structured light, we create a two-dimensional quantum billiard for the exciton-polariton condensate and demonstrate a diabolical point in the spectrum of the billiard eigenstates. The fully reconfigurable geometry of the potential walls controlled by the optical pump enables a striking experimental visualisation of the Berry phase associated with the diabolical point. The Berry phase is observed and measured by direct imaging of the macroscopic exciton-polariton wavefunctions.

Dynamics of excitons in individual InAs quantum dots revealed in four-wave mixing spectroscopy

A detailed understanding of the population and coherence dynamics in optically driven individual emitters in solids and their signatures in ultrafast nonlinear-optical signals is of prime importance for their applications in future quantum and optical technologies. In a combined experimental and theoretical study on exciton complexes in single semiconductor quantum dots we reveal a detailed picture of the dynamics employing three-beam polarization-resolved four-wave mixing (FWM) micro-spectroscopy. The oscillatory dynamics of the FWM signals in the exciton-biexciton system is governed by the fine-structure splitting and the biexciton binding energy in an excellent quantitative agreement between measurement and analytical description. The analysis of the excitation conditions exhibits a dependence of the dynamics on the specific choice of polarization configuration, pulse areas and temporal ordering of driving fields. The interplay between the transitions in the four-level exciton system leads to rich evolution of coherence and population. Using two-dimensional FWM spectroscopy we elucidate the exciton-biexciton coupling and identify neutral and charged exciton complexes in a single quantum dot. Our investigations thus clearly reveal that FWM spectroscopy is a powerful tool to characterize spectral and dynamical properties of single quantum structures.
