Ferrimagnetism in EuFe4As12 revealed by 153Eu NMR and 75As NQR measurements

Filled skutterudite compound EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ shows the highest magnetic ordering temperature of $T_{\rm C}$ = 154 K among Eu-based skutterudite compounds, but its magnetic ground state has not been determined yet. Here, we performed $^{153}$Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and $^{75}$As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ to reveal its magnetic ground state as well as the physical properties from a microscopic point of view. From the temperature and magnetic field dependence of $^{153}$Eu NMR spectrum in the magnetically ordered state, we found that the Eu ions are in Eu$^{2+}$ state with a nearly 7 $μ_{\rm B}$ corresponding to $S$ = 7/2 spins. Combined with the magnetization measurements which show the reduced saturation moments of 4.5 $μ_{\rm B}$/f.u., we determined the ground magnetic structure in EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ to be ferrimagnetic where the Eu$^{2+}$ 4$f$ and the Fe 3$d$ ordered moments are ferromagnetically aligned in each sublattice but the moments between the sublattices are antiferromagnetically aligned. We also found the local distortion at the Eu site from the cubic symmetry in the magnetically ordered state. The relationship between the rattling motion of Eu atoms and the local symmetry of the Eu ions is discussed. From the $^{75}$As NQR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as well as $^{153}$Eu NMR measurements, we found that the 4$f$ electrons of the Eu ions are well described by the local moment picture in both the magnetic and paramagnetic metallic states.

Suppression of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the filled skutterudite superconductor SrOs4As12 revealed by 75As NMR-NQR measurements

Motivated by the recent observation of ferromagnetic spin correlations in the filled skutterudite SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$ [Ding et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 155149 (2018)], we have carried out $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements to investigate the role of magnetic fluctuations in a newly discovered isostructural superconductor SrOs$_4$As$_{12}$ with a superconducting transition temperature of $T_{\rm c}$ $\sim$ 4.8 K. Knight shift $K$ determined by the NQR spectrum under a small magnetic field ($\le$ 0.5 T) is nearly independent of temperature, consistent with the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/$T_1T$, is nearly independent of temperature above $\sim$ 50 K and increases slightly with decreasing temperature below the temperature. The temperature dependence is reasonably explained by a simple model where a flat band structure with a small ledge near the Fermi energy is assumed. By comparing the present NMR data with those in SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$, we found that the values of $|K|$ and $1/T_1T$ in SrOs$_4$As$_{12}$ are smaller than those in SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$, indicating no obvious ferromagnetic spin correlations in SrOs$_4$As$_{12}$. From the temperature dependence of 1/$T_1$ in the superconducting state, an $s$-wave superconductivity is realized.

Ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the filled skutterudite SrFe4As12 revealed by 75As NMR-NQR measurements

$^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements have been carried out to investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the filled skutterudite metallic compound SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$. The temperature dependence of Knight shift $K$ determined by the NQR spectrum under a small magnetic field ($\le$ 0.5 T) shows the similar temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ which exhibits a broad maximum at $T^\ast$ $\sim$ 50 K. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/$T_1T$, increases with decreasing temperature and exhibits a broad maximum at $T$ $\sim$ 70 K, similar to the case of $χ$. The temperature dependence of $K$ and $1/T_1T$ is reasonably explained by a simple model where we assume a concave-shaped band structure near the Fermi energy. Based on a Korringa ratio analysis using the $T_1$ and $K$ data, ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are found to exist in SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$. These results indicate that SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$ can be characterized to be a metal with ferromagnetic correlations and also the peculiar band structure responsible for the suppression of $1/T_1T$ and $K$ at low temperatures.

Pressure suppression of unconventional charge-density-wave state in PrRu4P12 studied by optical conductivity

Optical conductivity s(w) of PrRu4P12 has been studied under high pressure to 14 GPa, at low temperatures to 8 K, and at photon energies 12 meV-1.1 eV. The energy gap in s(w) at ambient pressure, caused by a metal-insulator transition due to an unconventional charge-density-wave formation at 63 K, is gradually filled in with increasing pressure to 10 GPa. At 14 GPa and below 30 K, s(w) exhibits a pronounced Drude-type component due to free carriers. This indicates that the initial insulating ground state at zero pressure has been turned into a metallic one at 14 GPa. This is consistent with a previous resistivity study under pressure, where the resistivity rapidly decreased with cooling below 30 K at 14 GPa. The evolution of electronic structure with pressure is discussed in terms of the hybridization between the 4f and conduction electrons.

Spin Dynamics at Very Low Temperature in Spin Ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We have performed AC susceptibility and DC magnetic relaxation measurements on the spin ice system Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ down to 0.08 K. The relaxation time of the magnetization has been estimated below 2 K down to 0.08 K. The spin dynamics of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is well described by using two relaxation times ($τ_{\rm S}$ (short time) and $τ_{\rm L}$ (long time)). Both $τ_{\rm S}$ and $τ_{\rm L}$ increase on cooling. Assuming the Arrhenius law in the temperature range 0.5-1 K, we obtained an energy barrier of 9 K. Below 0.5 K, both $τ_{\rm S}$ and $τ_{\rm L}$ show a clear deviation from the thermal activated dynamics toward temperature independent relaxation, suggesting a quantum dynamics.

Superconducting properties of Pr-based Filled skutterudite PrRu$_4$As$_{12}$

We report on systematic study of superconducting characteristics and Pr crystalline-electric-field (CEF) levels of filled-skutterudite \pra ($T_{\rm c}$ = 2.33 K). The temperature dependences of the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ and the Ginzburg-Landau (Maki) parameter $κ_2$ suggest an s-wave clean-limit superconductivity. The electronic specific heat coefficient $γ\sim 95$ mJ/K$^2$mol, being $\sim 1.5$ times larger than that for \lra, indicates $4f$-originating quasiparticle mass enhancement. Magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ indicates that the CEF ground state is a $Γ_1$ singlet and a $Γ_4^{(1)}$ triplet first excited state lies at $Δ_{\rm CEF}\sim 30$ K above. Systematic comparison among \pos, \prs, \pra and La-based reference compounds suggests that inelastic exchange- and aspherical-charge-scatterings of conduction electrons from CEF-split $4f$ levels play an essential role for the quasiparticle mass enhancement and the value of $T_{\rm c}$ in the Pr-based filled skutterudites.

Evidence for Magnetic Ordering Associated with Metal-Insulator Transition in SmRu4P12 Studied by Muon Spin Relaxation

Muon spin relaxation measurements on the filled skutterudite compound SmRu4P12 have been carried out in zero- and longitudinal-fields. Temperature dependence of both initial asymmetry and muon-spin depolarization rate show the appearance of a magnetically ordered state below the metal-insulator transition temperature TMI. The present study indicates that the ordering below TMI is not a non-magnetic antiferro-quadrupolar ordering but a magnetic one, which supports a scenario that a magnetic octupolar ordering occurs below TMI in SmRu4P12.

Pressure-temperature phase diagram of the heavy-electron superconductor URu2Si2

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of the heavy-electron superconductor URu2Si2 has been reinvestigated by ac-susceptibility and elastic neutron-scattering (NS) measurements performed on a small single-crystalline rod (2 mm in diameter, 6 mm in length) in a Cu-Be clamp-type high-pressure cell (P < 1.1 GPa). At ambient pressure, this sample shows the weakest antiferromagnetic (AF) Bragg reflections reported so far, corresponding to the volume-averaged staggered moment of mord ~ 0.011 mB/U. Under applied pressure, the AF scattering intensity exhibits a sharp increase at P ~ 0.7 GPa at low temperatures. The saturation value of the AF scattering intensity above 0.7 GPa corresponds to mord ~ 0.41 mB/U, which is in good agreement with that (~ 0.39 mB/U) observed above 1.5 GPa in our previous NS measurements. The superconductivity is dramatically suppressed by the evolution of AF phase, indicating that the superconducting state coexists only with the hidden order phase. The presence of parasitic ferro- and/or antiferromagnetic phases with transition temperatures T1star =120(5) K, T2star = 36(3) K and T3star = 16.5(5) K and their relationship to the low-T ordered phases are also discussed.

Metal-insulator transition in PrRu$_4$P$_{12}$ and SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ investigated by optical spectroscopy

Electronic structures of the filled-skutterudite compounds PrRu$_4$P$_{12}$ and SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$, which undergo a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at $T_{\rm MI}$ = 60 K and 16 K, respectively, have been studied by means of optical spectroscopy. Their optical conductivity spectra develop an energy gap of $\sim$ 10 meV below $T_{\rm MI}$. The observed characteristics of the energy gap are qualitatively different from those of the Kondo semiconductors. In addition, optical phonon peaks in the spectra show anomalies upon the MIT, including broadening and shifts at $T_{\rm MI}$ and an appearance of new peaks below $T_{\rm MI}$. These results are discussed in terms of density waves or orbital ordering previously predicted for these compounds.

Charge-Density-Wave Ordering in the Metal-Insulator Transition Compound PrRu4P12

X-ray and electron diffraction measurements on the metal-insulator (M-I) transition compound PrRu$_4$P$_{12}$ have revealed the emergence of a periodic ordering of charge density around the Pr atoms. It is found that the ordering is associated with the onset of a low temperature insulator phase. These conclusions are supported by the facts that the space group of the crystal structure transforms from Im$\bar{3}$ to Pm$\bar{3}$ below the M-I transition temperature and also that the temperature dependence of the superlattice peaks in the insulator phase follows the squared BCS function. The M-I transition could be originated from the perfect nesting of the Fermi surface and/or the instability of the $f$ electrons.

Possible Kondo resonance in PrFe4P12 studied by bulk-sensitive photoemission

Pr 4f electronic states in Pr-based filled skutterudites PrT4X12(T=Fe and Ru; X=P and Sb) have been studied by high-resolution bulk-sensitive Pr 3d-4f resonance photoemission. A very strong spectral intensity is observed just below the Fermi level in the heavy-fermion system PrFe4P12. The increase of its intensity at lower temperatures is observed. We speculate that this is the Kondo resonance of Pr, the origin of which is attributed to the strong hybridization between the Pr 4f and the conduction electrons.

Single Crystal Growth of Skutterudite CoP3 under High Pressure

A new method to grow single crystals of skutterudite compounds is examined. Using a wedge-type, cubic-anvil, high-pressure apparatus, single crystals of CoP3 were grown from stoichiometric melts under a pressure of 3.5 GPa. Powder x-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis measurements indicate that the as-grown boules are a single phase of CoP3. The results suggest that CoP3 is a congruent melting compound under high pressure.

Structural Phase Transition Accompanied by Metal - Insulator Transition in PrRu4P12

A structural phase transition has been found using electron diffraction technique in PrRu4P12 accompanied by a metal - insulator (M - I) transition (TMI = 60K). Weak superlattice spots appeared at (H, K, L) (H + K + L = 2n + 1; n is an integer) position at a temperature of T = 12 K and 40 K. Above T = 70 K, the spots completely vanished. The space group of the low temperature phase is probably Pm3. This is the first observation of a symmetry other than Im3 in skutterudite compounds.

XANES study of rare-earth valency in LRu4P12 (L = Ce and Pr)

Valency of Ce and Pr in LRu4P12 (L = Ce and Pr) was studied by L2,3-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The Ce-L3 XANES spectrum suggests that Ce is mainly trivalent, but the 4f state strongly hybridizes with ligand orbitals. The band gap of CeRu4P12 seems to be formed by strong hybridization of 4f electrons. Pr-L2 XANES spectra indicate that Pr exists in trivalent state over a wide range in temperature, 20 < T < 300 K. We find that the metal-insulator (MI) transition at TMI = 60 K in PrRu4P12 does not originate from Pr valence fluctuation.
