Enhancing Imbalance Learning: A Novel Slack-Factor Fuzzy SVM Approach

In real-world applications, class-imbalanced datasets pose significant challenges for machine learning algorithms, such as support vector machines (SVMs), particularly in effectively managing imbalance, noise, and outliers. Fuzzy support vector machines (FSVMs) address class imbalance by assigning varying fuzzy memberships to samples; however, their sensitivity to imbalanced datasets can lead to inaccurate assessments. The recently developed slack-factor-based FSVM (SFFSVM) improves traditional FSVMs by using slack factors to adjust fuzzy memberships based on misclassification likelihood, thereby rectifying misclassifications induced by the hyperplane obtained via different error cost (DEC). Building on SFFSVM, we propose an improved slack-factor-based FSVM (ISFFSVM) that introduces a novel location parameter. This novel parameter significantly advances the model by constraining the DEC hyperplane's extension, thereby mitigating the risk of misclassifying minority class samples. It ensures that majority class samples with slack factor scores approaching the location threshold are assigned lower fuzzy memberships, which enhances the model's discrimination capability. Extensive experimentation on a diverse array of real-world KEEL datasets demonstrates that the proposed ISFFSVM consistently achieves higher F1-scores, Matthews correlation coefficients (MCC), and area under the precision-recall curve (AUC-PR) compared to baseline classifiers. Consequently, the introduction of the location parameter, coupled with the slack-factor-based fuzzy membership, enables ISFFSVM to outperform traditional approaches, particularly in scenarios characterized by severe class disparity. The code for the proposed model is available at \url{https://github.com/mtanveer1/ISFFSVM}.

Charge-density-wave order takes over antiferromagnetism in Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6}$ superconductors

Superconductivity appears in the cuprates when a spin order is destroyed, while the role of charge is less known. Recently, charge density wave (CDW) was found below the superconducting dome in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ when a high magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ plane, which was suggested to arise from incipient CDW in the vortex cores that becomes overlapped. Here, by $^{63}$Cu-nuclear magnetic resonance, we report the discovery of CDW induced by an in-plane field that does not create vortex cores in the plane, setting in above the dome in single-layered Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_6$.The onset temperature $T_{\rm CDW}$ takes over the antiferromagnetic order temperature $T_{\rm N}$ beyond a critical doping level at which superconductivity starts to emerge, and scales with the psudogap temperature $T^{*}$. These results provide important insights into the relationship between spin order, CDW and the pseudogap, and their connections to high-temperature superconductivity.

Impurity effects on spin dynamics in magnetic and superconducting iron pnictides and chalcogenides

In this paper we summarize the effects of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities on the spin dynamics in Febased superconductors and their parent compounds. The effects of chemical substitution, vacancies, and disorder on the suppression or stabilization of superconductivity and spin-density-wave phases are reviewed in the context of recent neutron-spectroscopy measurements of spin excitations. We also present new results on the structure of magnetic fluctuations in BaFe2As2 single crystals doped with Mn local moments and discuss them in relationship to the previously reported (pi, pi) branch of checkerboard magnetic excitations.

Cu-NMR study of oxygen disorder in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy

We show that 63Cu NMR spectra place strong constraints on both the nature and the concentration of oxygen defects in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy. Systematic deviation from ideal ortho-II order is revealed by the presence of inequivalent Cu sites in either full or empty chains. The results can be explained by two kinds of defects: oxygen clustering into additional chains, or fragments thereof, most likely present at all concentrations (6.4<y<6.6) and oxygen vacancies randomly distributed in the full chains for y<6.50 only. Furthermore, the remarkable reproducibility of the spectra in different samples with optimal ortho-II order (y=6.55) shows that chain-oxygen disorder, known to limit electronic coherence, is ineluctable because it is inherent to these compounds.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with 9-eV photon-energy pulses generated in a gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber

A recently developed source of ultraviolet radiation, based on optical soliton propagation in a gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, is applied here to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Near-infrared femtosecond pulses of only few μJ energy generate vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation between 5.5 and 9 eV inside the gas-filled fiber. These pulses are used to measure the band structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 with a signal to noise ratio comparable to that obtained with high order harmonics from a gas jet. The two-order-of-magnitude gain in efficiency promises time-resolved ARPES measurements at repetition rates of hundreds of kHz or even MHz, with photon energies that cover the first Brillouin zone of most materials.

Pressure-induced phase transition and superconductivity in YBa2Cu4O8

We investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of the lattice dynamics of the underdoped, stoichiometric, high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 by means of Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. This system undergoes a reversible pressure-induced structural phase transition around 10 GPa to a collapsed orthorhombic structure, that is well reproduced by the calculation. The coupling of the B1g-like buckling phonon mode to the electronic continuum is used to probe superconductivity. In the low pressure phase, self-energy effects through the superconducting transition renormalize this phonon, and the amplitude of this renormalization strongly increases with pressure. Whereas our calculation indicates that this mode's coupling to the electronic system is only marginally affected by the structural phase transition, the aforementioned renormalization is completely suppressed in the high pressure phase, demonstrating that under hydrostatic pressures higher than 10 GPa, superconductivity in YBa2Cu4O8 is greatly weakened or obliterated.

Origin of Rashba-splitting in the quantized subbands at Bi2Se3 surface

We study the band structure of the $\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$ topological insulator (111) surface using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We examine the situation where two sets of quantized subbands exhibiting different Rashba spin-splitting are created via bending of the conduction (CB) and the valence (VB) bands at the surface. While the CB subbands are strongly Rashba spin-split, the VB subbands do not exhibit clear spin-splitting. We find that CB and VB experience similar band bending magnitudes, which means, a spin-splitting discrepancy due to different surface potential gradients can be excluded. On the other hand, by comparing the experimental band structure to first principles LMTO band structure calculations, we find that the strongly spin-orbit coupled Bi 6$p$ orbitals dominate the orbital character of CB, whereas their admixture to VB is rather small. The spin-splitting discrepancy is, therefore, traced back to the difference in spin-orbit coupling between CB and VB in the respective subbands' regions.

Spin-density-wave-induced anomalies in the optical conductivity of AFe2As2, (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) single-crystalline iron pnictides

We report the complex dielectric function of high-quality $A\textrm{Fe}_2\textrm{As}_2$, ($A$=Ca, Sr, Ba) single crystals with $T_{\mathrm{N}}\approx150\ \textrm{K}$, $200\ \textrm{K}$, and $138\ \textrm{K}$, respectively, determined by broadband spectroscopic ellipsometry at temperatures $10\leq T\leq300\ \textrm{K}$ and wavenumbers from $100\ \textrm{cm}^{-1}$ to $52000\ \textrm{cm}^{-1}$. In $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ we identify the optical spin-density--wave gap $2Δ_{\mathrm{SDW}}\approx1250\ \textrm{cm}^{-1}$. The $2Δ_{\mathrm{SDW}}/(k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{N}})$ ratio, characterizing the strength of the electron-electron coupling in the spin-density--wave state, amounts to $\approx12$ in $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$, significantly larger than the corresponding values for the $\textrm{SrFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and $\textrm{BaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ compounds: 8.7 and 5.3, respectively. We further show that, similarly to the Ba-based compound, two characteristic SDW energy gaps can be identified in the infrared-conductivity spectra of both $\textrm{SrFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and investigate their detailed temperature dependence in all three materials. This analysis reveals the existence of an anomaly in $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ at a temperature $T^*\approx80\ \textrm{K}$, well below the Néel temperature of this compound, which implies weak coupling between the two SDW subsystems. The coupling between the two subsystems evolves to intermediate in the Sr-based and strong in the Ba-based material. The temperature dependence of the infrared phonons reveals clear anomalies at the corresponding Néel temperatures of the investigated compounds. In $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$, the phonons exhibit signatures of SDW fluctuations above $T_N$ and some evidence for anomalies at $T^*$. (full abstract in PDF)

Lattice dynamical signature of charge density wave formation in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x

We report a detailed Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in detwinned single crystals of the underdoped high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x (x=0.75, 0.6, 0.55 and 0.45). Whereas at room temperature the phonon spectra of these compounds are similar to that of optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.99, additional Raman-active modes appear upon cooling below ~170-200 K in underdoped crystals. The temperature dependence of these new features indicates that they are associated with the incommensurate charge density wave state recently discovered using synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques on the same single crystals. Raman scattering has thus the potential to explore the evolution of this state under extreme conditions.

Quantum Criticality in Electron-doped BaFe_{2-x}Ni_xAs_2

A quantum critical point (QCP) is a point in a system's phase diagram at which an order is completely suppressed at absolute zero temperature (T). The presence of a quantum critical point manifests itself in the finite-T physical properties, and often gives rise to new states of matter. Superconductivity in the cuprates and in heavy fermion materials is believed by many to be mediated by fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. In the recently-discovered iron-pnictide high temperature superconductors, it is unknown whether a QCP exists or not in a carrier-doped system. Here we report transport and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on BaFe_{2-x}Ni_xAs_2 (0 =< x =< 0.17). We find two critical points at x_{c1} = 0.10 and x_{c2} = 0.14. The electrical resistivity follows ρ= ρ_0 + A*T^n, with n = 1 around x_{c1} and another minimal n = 1.1 at x_{c2}. By NMR measurements, we identity x_{c1} to be a magnetic QCP and suggest that x_{c2} is a new type of QCP associated with a nematic structural phase transition. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in carrier-doped pnictides is closely linked to the quantum criticality.

Doping-Dependent Raman Resonance in the Model High-Temperature Superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d

We study the model high-temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d with electronic Raman scattering and optical ellipsometry over a wide doping range. The resonant Raman condition which enhances the scattering cross section of "two-magnon" excitations is found to change strongly with doping, and it corresponds to a rearrangement of inter-band optical transitions in the 1-3 eV range seen by ellipsometry. This unexpected change of the resonance condition allows us to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between Raman and x-ray detection of magnetic fluctuations in superconducting cuprates. Intriguingly, the strongest variation occurs across the doping level where the antinodal superconducting gap reaches its maximum.

Magnetic field-enhanced spin freezing in YBa2Cu3O6.45 at the verge of the competition between superconductivity and charge order

Using 63Cu NMR, we establish that the enhancement of spin order by a magnetic field H in YBa2Cu3O6.45 arises from a competition with superconductivity because the effect occurs for H perpendicular, but not parallel, to the CuO2 planes, and it persists up to field values comparable to Hc2. We also find that the spin-freezing has a glassy nature and that the frozen state onsets at a temperature which is independent of the magnitude of H. These results, together with the presence of a competing charge-ordering instability at nearby doping levels, are strikingly parallel to those previously obtained in La-214. This suggests a universal interpretation of magnetic field effects in underdoped cuprates where the enhancement of spin order by the field may not be the primary phenomenon but rather a byproduct of the competition between superconductivity and charge order. Low-energy spin fluctuations are manifested up to relatively high temperatures where they partially mask the signature of the pseudogap in 1/T1 data of planar Cu sites.

Enhanced low energy fluctuations and increasing out-of-plane coherence in vacancy ordered NaxCoO2

We report Raman scattering experiments on the strongly correlated electron system NaxCoO2 with x= 0.71 and ordered Na vacancies. In this doping regime, NaxCoO2 exhibits a large and unusual thermopower and becomes superconducting upon hydration. Our Raman scattering data reveal pronounced low energy fluctuations that diverge in intensity at low temperatures. Related to these fluctuations is a drastic decrease of an electronic scattering rate from 50 to 3 cm-1. This observation is quite different from the behavior of Na disordered samples that have a larger and temperature independent scattering rate. Simultaneously with the evolution of the scattering rate, phonon anomalies point to an increasing out-of-plane coherence of the lattice with decreasing temperature. These observations may indicate the condensation of spin polarons into an unusual, highly dynamic ground state.

Possible realization of an antiferromagnetic Griffiths phase in Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2)

We investigate magnetic ordering in metallic Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2) and discuss the unusual magnetic phase, which was recently discovered for Mn concentrations x > 10%. We argue that it can be understood as a Griffiths-type phase that forms above the quantum critical point associated with the suppression of the stripe-antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW) order in BaFe2As2 by the randomly introduced localized Mn moments acting as strong magnetic impurities. While the SDW transition at x = 0, 2.5% and 5% remains equally sharp, in the x = 12% sample we observe an abrupt smearing of the antiferromagnetic transition in temperature and a considerable suppression of the spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. According to our muon-spin-relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron-scattering data, antiferromagnetically ordered rare regions start forming in the x = 12% sample significantly above the Néel temperature of the parent compound. Upon cooling, their volume grows continuously, leading to an increase in the magnetic Bragg intensity and to the gradual opening of a partial spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Using neutron Larmor diffraction, we also demonstrate that the magnetically ordered volume is characterized by a finite orthorhombic distortion, which could not be resolved in previous diffraction studies most probably due to its coexistence with the tetragonal phase and a microstrain-induced broadening of the Bragg reflections. We argue that Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2) could represent an interesting model spin-glass system, in which localized magnetic moments are randomly embedded into a SDW metal with Fermi surface nesting.

Upper critical magnetic field in K0.83Fe1.83Se2 and Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2 single crystals

The H-T phase diagrams of single crystalline electron-doped K0.83Fe1.83Se2 (KFS1), K0.8Fe2Se2 (KFS2) and hole-doped Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2 (EKFA) have been deduced from tunnel diode oscillator-based contactless measurements in pulsed magnetic fields up to 57 T for the inter-plane (H//c) and in-plane (H//ab) directions. The temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field Hc2(T) relevant to EFKA is accounted for by the Pauli model including an anisotropic Pauli paramagnetic contribution (μ_BHp=114 T for H//ab and 86 T for H//c). This is also the case of KFS1 and KFS2 for H//ab whereas a significant upward curvature, accounted for by a two-gap model, is observed for H//c. Despite the presence of antiferromagnetic lattice order within the superconducting state of the studied compounds, no influence of magnetic ordering on the temperature dependence of Hc2(T) is observed.

Dispersive spin excitations in highly overdoped cuprates revealed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L$-absorption edge, we have observed intense, dispersive spin excitations in highly overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (superconducting $T_c =6$ K), a compound whose normal-state charge transport and thermodynamic properties have been studied extensively and shown to exhibit canonical Fermi-liquid behavior. Complementary RIXS experiments on slightly overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($T_c =89$ K) and on Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ compounds spanning a wide range of doping levels indicate that these excitations exhibit energies and energy-integrated spectral weights closely similar to those of antiferromagnetic magnons in undoped cuprates. The surprising coexistence of Fermi-liquid-like charge excitations and high-energy spin excitations reminiscent of antiferromagnetic insulators in highly overdoped compounds poses a challenge to current theoretical models of the cuprates.

Evidence of a critical hole concentration in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ single crystals revealed by $^{63}$Cu NMR

We report a $^{63}$Cu NMR investigation in detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ single crystals, focusing on the highly underdoped regime (y=6.35-6.6). Measurements of both the spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates of $^{63}$Cu uncover the emergence of static order at a well-defined onset temperature $T_0$ without a known order parameter as yet. While $T_0$ is rapidly suppressed with increasing hole doping concentration $p$, the spin pseudogap was identified only near and above the doping content at which $T_0\rightarrow 0$. Our data indicate the presence of a critical hole doping $p_c\sim 0.1$, which may control both the static order at $p p_c$.

Microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity in Ba$_{0.77}$K$_{0.23}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We report ^{75}As nuclear magnetic resonance studies on an underdoped single-crystal Ba0.77K0.23Fe2As2 with Tc = 16.5 K. Below T_N = 46 K, the NMR peaks for H//c split and those for H //a shift to higher frequencies, which indicates that an internal magnetic field along the c axis develops below T_N. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 measured at the shifted peak with H//a, which experiences the internal field, shows a distinct decrease below Tc(μ_0H = 12 T) = 16 K, following a T^3 relation at low temperatures. Our results show unambiguously that antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity coexist microscopically. The unusual superconducting state with the coexisting magnetism is highlighted.
