Conformity of spin fluctuations in alkali-metal iron selenide superconductors inferred from the observation of a magnetic resonant mode in K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2)

Spin excitations stemming from the metallic phase of the ferrochalcogenide superconductor K(0.77)Fe(1.85)Se(2) (T_c=32 K) were mapped out in the ab plane by means of the time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy. We observed a magnetic resonant mode at Q_res=(1/2 1/4), whose energy and in-plane shape are almost identical to those in the related compound Rb(0.8)Fe(1.6)Se(2). This lets us infer that there is a unique underlying electronic structure of the bulk superconducting phase K(x)Fe(2)Se(2), which is universal for all alkali-metal iron selenide superconductors and stands in contrast to the doping-tunable phase diagrams of the related iron pnictides. Furthermore, the spectral weight of the resonance on the absolute scale, normalized to the volume fraction of the superconducting phase, is several times larger than in optimally doped BaFe(2-x)Co(x)As(2). We also found no evidence for any additional low-energy branches of spin excitations away from Q_res. Our results provide new input for theoretical models of the spin dynamics in iron based superconductors.

Mn local moments prevent superconductivity in iron-pnictides Ba(Fe 1-x Mn x)2As2

75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments were performed on Ba(Fe1-xMnx)2As2 (xMn = 2.5%, 5% and 12%) single crystals. The Fe layer magnetic susceptibility far from Mn atoms is probed by the75As NMR line shift and is found similar to that of BaFe2As2, implying that Mn does not induce charge doping. A satellite line associated with the Mn nearest neighbours (n.n.) of 75As displays a Curie-Weiss shift which demonstrates that Mn carries a local magnetic moment. This is confirmed by the main line broadening typical of a RKKY-like Mn-induced staggered spin polarization. The Mn moment is due to the localization of the additional Mn hole. These findings explain why Mn does not induce superconductivity in the pnictides contrary to other dopants such as Co, Ni, Ru or K.

Similar zone-center gaps in the low-energy spin-wave spectra of NaFeAs and BaFe2As2

We report results of inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements of low-energy spin-wave excitations in two structurally distinct families of iron-pnictide parent compounds: Na(1-δ)FeAs and BaFe2As2. Despite their very different values of the ordered magnetic moment and Néel temperatures, T_N, in the antiferromagnetic state both compounds exhibit similar spin gaps of the order of 10 meV at the magnetic Brillouin-zone center. The gap opens sharply below T_N, with no signatures of a precursor gap at temperatures between the orthorhombic and magnetic phase transitions in Na(1-δ)FeAs. We also find a relatively weak dispersion of the spin-wave gap in BaFe2As2 along the out-of-plane momentum component, q_z. At the magnetic zone boundary (q_z = 0), spin excitations in the ordered state persist down to 20 meV, which implies a much smaller value of the effective out-of-plane exchange interaction, J_c, as compared to previous estimates based on fitting the high-energy spin-wave dispersion to a Heisenberg-type model.

Strong pairing at iron $3d_{xz,yz}$ orbitals in hole-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$

Among numerous hypotheses, recently proposed to explain superconductivity in iron-based superconductors [1-9], many consider Fermi surface (FS) nesting [2, 4, 8, 10] and dimensionality [4, 9] as important contributors. Precise determination of the electronic spectrum and its modification by superconductivity, crucial for further theoretical advance, were hindered by a rich structure of the FS [11-17]. Here, using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with resolution of all three components of electron momentum and electronic states symmetry, we disentangle the electronic structure of hole-doped BaFe2As2, and show that nesting and dimensionality of FS sheets have no immediate relation to the superconducting pairing. Alternatively a clear correlation between the orbital character of the electronic states and their propensity to superconductivity is observed: the magnitude of the superconducting gap maximizes at 10.5 meV exclusively for iron 3dxz;yz orbitals, while for others drops to 3.5 meV. Presented results reveal similarities of electronic response to superconducting and magneto-structural transitions [18, 19], implying that relation between these two phases is more intimate than just competition for FS, and demonstrate importance of orbital physics in iron superconductors.

Anomalous dependence of the c-axis polarized Fe B$_{1g}$ phonon mode with Fe and Se concentrations in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$

We report an investigation of the lattice dynamical properties in a range of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ compounds, with special emphasis on the c-axis polarized vibration of Fe with B$_{1g}$ symmetry, a Raman active mode common to all families of Fe-based superconductors. We have carried out a systematic study of the temperature dependence of this phonon mode as a function of Se $x$ and excess Fe $y$ concentrations. In parent compound Fe$_{1+y}$Te, we observe an unconventional broadening of the phonon between room temperature and magnetic ordering temperature $T_N$. The situation smoothly evolves towards a regular anharmonic behavior as Te is substituted for Se and long range magnetic order is replaced by superconductivity. Irrespective to Se contents, excess Fe is shown to provide an additional damping channel for the B$_{1g}$ phonon at low temperatures. We performed Density Functional Theory (DFT) ab-initio calculations within the local density approximation (LDA) to calcuate the phonon frequencies including magnetic polarization and Fe non-stoichiometry in the Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA). We obtained a good agreement with the measured phonon frequencies in the Fe-deficient samples, while the effects of Fe excess are poorly reproduced. This may be due to excess Fe-induced local magnetism and low energy magnetic fluctuations that can not be treated accurately within these approaches. As recently revealed by neutron scattering and $μ$-SR studies, these phenomena occur in the temperature range where anomalous decay of the B$_{1g}$ phonon is observed, and suggests a peculiar coupling of this mode with local moments and spin fluctuations in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$.

KxFe2-ySe2 single crystals: Floating-zone growth, Transport and Structural properties

Single crystals of superconducting KxFe2-ySe2 have been grown with the optical floating-zone technique under application of 8 bar of argon pressure. We found that large and high quality single crystals with dimensions of ~\varnothing6 \times 10 mm could be obtained at the termination of the grown ingot through quenching, while the remaining part of the ingot decomposed. As-grown single crystals commonly represent an intergrowth of two sets of the c-axis characterized by slightly different lattice constants. Single crystal of K0.80Fe1.81Se2 shows a superconducting transition at Tc = 31.6 K, leading to a near 100% expulsion of the external magnetic field in magnetization measurements. On the other hand, neutron-diffraction data indicate that superconductivity in the sample coexists with a iron-vacancy superstructure and static antiferromagnetic order. The anisotropic ratio of the upper critical field Hc2 for both H//c and H//ab configurations is \sim3.46.

Pseudogap in the chain states of YBCO

As established by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) cleaved surfaces of the high temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ develop charge density wave (CDW) modulations in the one-dimensional (1D) CuO chains. At the same time, no signatures of the CDW have been reported in the spectral function of the chain band previously studied by photoemission. We use soft X-ray angle resolved photoemission (SX-ARPES) to detect a chain-derived surface band that had not been detected in previous work. The $2k_\textup{F}$ for the new surface band is found to be 0.55\,Å$^{-1}$, which matches the wave vector of the CDW observed in direct space by STM. This reveals the relevance of the Fermi surface nesting for the formation of CDWs in the CuO chains in YBa$_2$Cu$_2$O$_{7-δ}$. In agreement with the short range nature of the CDW order the newly detected surface band exhibits a pseudogap, whose energy scale also corresponds to that observed by STM.

Highly anisotropic anomaly in the dispersion of the copper-oxygen bond-bending phonon in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 from inelastic neutron scattering

Motivated by predictions of a substantial contribution of the "buckling" vibration of the CuO2 layers to d-wave superconductivity in the cuprates, we have performed an inelastic neutron scattering study of this phonon in an array of untwinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O7. The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated with a uniaxial charge-density modulation and does not mediate d-wave superconductivity.

Vortex glass line and vortex liquid resistivity in doped BaFe2As2 single crystals

The vortex liquid-to-glass transition has been studied in Ba0.72K0.28Fe2As2, Ba0.9Co0.1Fe2As2, and Ba(Fe0.45Ni0.05)2As2 single crystal with superconducting transition temperature, Tc = 31.7, 17.3, and 18 K, respectively, by magnetoresistance measurements. For temperatures below Tc, the resistivity curves were measured in magnetic fields within the range of 0 \leq B \leq 13 T, and the pinning potential was scaled according to a modified model for vortex liquid resistivity. Good scaling of the resistivity ρ(B, T) and the effective pinning energy U0(B,T) was obtained with the critical exponents s and B0. The vortex state is three-dimensional at temperatures lower than a characteristic temperature T*. The vortex phase diagram was determined based on the evolution of the vortex-glass transition temperature Tg with magnetic field and the upper critical field, Hc2. We found that non-magnetic K doping results in a high glass line close to the Hc2, while magnetic Ni and Co doping cause a low glass line which is far away from the Hc2. Our results suggest that non-magnetic induced disorder is more favourable for enhancement of pinning strength compared to magnetic induced disorder. Our results show that the pinning potential is responsible for the difference in the glass states.

Normal state resistivity of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$: evidence for multiband strong-coupling behavior

We present theoretical analysis of the normal state resistivity in multiband superconductors in the framework of Eliashberg theory. The results are compared with measurements of the temperature dependence of normal state resistivity of high-purity Ba$_{0.68}$K$_{0.32}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals with the highest reported transition temperature $T_c$ = 38.5 K. The experimental data demonstrate strong deviations from the Bloch-Grüneisen behavior, namely the tendency to saturation of the resistivity at high temperatures. The observed behavior of the resistivity is explained within the two band scenario when the first band is strongly coupled and relatively clean, while the second band is weakly coupled and is characterized by much stronger impurity scattering.

Fusion of bogoliubons in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and similarity of energy scales in high temperature superconductors

Usually the superconducting pairing is considered to modify electronic states only in a narrow momentum range close to the Fermi surface. Here we present a direct experimental observation of fusion of Bogoliubov dispersion branches originating from the antipodal Fermi crossings by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Uncommon discernibility and brightness of bogoliubons' fusion stems from comparability of the superconducting gap magnitude and the distance from the Fermi level to the band's top, and strong electron scattering on a mode with similar energy. Such similarity of the electronic and pairing energy scales seems to be a persistent associate of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) rather than just a mere coincidence.

Intense paramagnon excitations in a large family of high-temperature superconductors

In the search for the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity, intense research has been focused on the evolution of the spin excitation spectrum upon doping from the antiferromagnetic insulating to the superconducting states of the cuprates. Because of technical limitations, the experimental investigation of doped cuprates has been largely focused on low-energy excitations in a small range of momentum space. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to show that a large family of superconductors, encompassing underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ and overdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$, exhibits damped spin excitations (paramagnons) with dispersions and spectral weights closely similar to those of magnons in undoped cuprates. %The results are in excellent agreement with the spin excitations obtained by exact diagonalization of the $\bf t-J$ Hamiltonian on finite-sized clusters. The comprehensive experimental description of this surprisingly simple spectrum permits quantitative tests of magnetic Cooper pairing models. A numerical solution of the Eliashberg equations for the magnetic spectrum of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ reproduces its superconducting transition temperature within a factor of two, a level of agreement comparable to Eliashberg theories of conventional superconductors.

Direct observation of local K variation and its correlation to electronic inhomogeneity in (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2 Pnictide

Local fluctuations in the distribution of dopant atoms are a suspected cause of nanoscale electronic disorder or phase separation observed within the pnictide superconductors. Atom probe tomography results present the first direct observations of dopant nano-clustering in a K-doped 122-phase pnictides. First-principles calculations suggest the coexistence of static magnetism and superconductivity on a lattice parameter length scale over a large range of doping concentrations. Collectively, our results provide evidence for a mixed scenario of phase coexistence and phase separation originating from variation of dopant atom experiments distroibutions.

Upper critical magnetic field in Ba_0.68K_0.32Fe_2As_2 and Ba(Fe_0.93Co_0.07)_2As_2

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the radio-frequency magnetic penetration depth in Ba_0.68K_0.32Fe_2As_2 and Ba(Fe_0.93Co_0.07)_2As_2 single crystals in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. From our data, we construct an H-T phase diagram for the inter-plane (H || c) and in-plane (H || ab) directions for both compounds. For both field orientations in Ba_0.68K_0.32Fe_2As_2, we find a concave curvature of the Hc2(T) lines with decreasing anisotropy and saturation towards lower temperature. Taking into account Pauli spin paramagnetism we can describe Hc2(T) and its anisotropy. In contrast, we find that Pauli paramagnetic pair breaking is not essential for Ba(Fe_0.93Co_0.07)_2As_2. For this electron-doped compound, the data support a Hc2(T) dependence that can be described by the Werthamer Helfand Hohenberg model for H || ab and a two-gap behavior for H || c.

Nodeless energy gaps of single-crystalline Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2 as seen via 75As NMR

We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance studies on a very clean hole-doped single-crystal Ba$_{0.68}$K$_{0.32}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{\rm {c}}=38.5$ K). The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ shows an exponential decrease below $T \simeq 0.45 T_{\rm c}$ down to $T \simeq 0.11 T_{\rm c}$, which indicates a fully opened energy gap. From the ratio $(T_{1})_{c} / (T_{1})_{a}$, where $a$ and $c$ denote the crystal directions, we find that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation is anisotropic in the spin space above $T_{\rm c}$. The anisotropy decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ and disappears at $T \rightarrow 0$. We argue that the anisotropy stems from spin-orbit coupling whose effect vanishes when spin-singlet electron pairs form with a nodeless gap.

Eliashberg approach to superconductivity-induced infrared anomalies in Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2

We report the full complex dielectric function of high-purity $\textrm{Ba}_{0.68}\textrm{K}_{0.32}\textrm{Fe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ single crystals with $T_{\mathrm{c}}=38.5\ \textrm{K}$ determined by wide-band spectroscopic ellipsometry at temperatures $10\leq T\leq300\ \textrm{K}$. We discuss the microscopic origin of superconductivity-induced infrared optical anomalies in the framework of a multiband Eliashberg theory with two distinct superconducting gap energies $2Δ_{\mathrm{A}}\approx6\ k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{c}}$ and $2Δ_{\mathrm{B}}\approx2.2\ k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{c}}$. The observed unusual suppression of the optical conductivity in the superconducting state at energies up to $14\ k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{c}}$ can be ascribed to spin-fluctuation--assisted processes in the clean limit of the strong-coupling regime.

Determination of the superconducting gap in near optimally doped Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} (x ~ 0.4) from low-temperature specific heat

Low-temperature specific heat of the monolayer high-Tc superconductor Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} has been measured close to the optimal doping point (x ~ 0.4) in different magnetic fields. The identification of both a T^2 term in zero field and a \sqrt{H} dependence of the specific heat in fields is shown to follow the theoretical prediction for d-wave pairing, which enables us to extract the slope of the superconducting gap in the vicinity of the nodes (v_Δ, which is proportional to the superconducting gap Δ_0 at the antinodes according to the standard d_{x^2-y^2} gap function). The v_Δ or Δ_0 (~ 12 meV) determined from this bulk measurement shows close agreement with that obtained from spectroscopy or tunneling measurements, which confirms the simple d-wave form of the superconducting gap.

Evidence for competing magnetic instabilities in underdoped $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$

We report a polarized neutron scattering study of the orbital-like magnetic order in strongly underdoped ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.45}}$ and ${\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.98}Zn_{0.02})_3O_{6.6}}$. Their hole doping levels are located on both sides of the critical doping $p_{MI}$ of a metal-insulator transition inferred from transport measurements. Our study reveals a drop down of the orbital-like order slightly below $p_{MI}$ with a steep decrease of both the ordering temperature $T_{mag}$ and the ordered moment. Above $p_{MI}$, substitution of quantum impurities does not change $T_{mag}$, whereas it lowers significantly the bulk ordered moment. The modifications of the orbital-like magnetic order are interpreted in terms of a competition with electronic liquid crystal phases around $p_{MI}$. This competition gives rise to a mixed magnetic state in ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.45}}$ and a phase separation in ${\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.98}Zn_{0.02})_3O_{6.6}}$.
