Critical point and the nature of the pseudogap of single-layered copper-oxide Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ superconductors

We apply strong magnetic fields of H=28.5 \sim 43 T to suppress superconductivity (SC) in the cuprates Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} (x=0.65, 0.40, 0.25, 0.15 and 0), and investigate the low temperature (T) normal state by ^{63}Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) measurements. We find that the pseudogap (PG) phase persists deep inside the overdoped region but terminates at x \sim 0.05 that corresponds to the hole doping concentration of approximately 0.21. Beyond this critical point, the normal state is a Fermi liquid characterized by the T_1T=const relation. A comparison of the superconducting state with the H-induced normal state in the x=0.40 (T_c = 32 K) sample indicates that there remains substantial part of the Fermi surface even in the fully-developed PG state, which suggests that the PG and SC are coexisting matters.

Study of intercalation and deintercalation of Na_xCoO_2 yH_2O single crystals

Single crystals of NaxCoO2 with beta-phase (x=0.55, 0.60 and 0.65), alpha'-phase (x=0.75) and alpha-phase (x=0.9, 1.0) have been grown by the floating zone technique. The Na-extraction and hydration were carried out for the alpha'-sample to get superconducting phase of NaxCoO2.yH2O (x~0.3, y~1.3). Hydrated single crystals exhibit cracked layers perpendicular to the c-axis due to a large expansion when the water is inserted into the structure. A study of intercalation/deintercalation was performed to determine the stability of the hydrated phase and effects of hydration on the structure of the compound. X-ray diffraction and Thermogravimetric experiments are used to monitor the process of water molecules accommodated in and removed from the crystal lattice. The initial intercalation process takes place with two-water molecules corresponding to y=0.6) inserted in a formula unit, followed by a group of four (y=1.3) to form a cluster of Na(H2O)4. Thermogravimetric analysis suggests that the deintercalation occurs with the removal of the water molecules one by one from the hydrated cluster at elevated temperatures of approximately 50, 100, 200 and 300 C, respectively. Our investigations reveal that the hydration process is dynamic and that water molecule inter- and deintercalation follow different reaction paths in an irreversible way.

Phonon scattering and stability of Na_0.5CoO_2

Raman scattering experiments have been performed on Na_xCoO_2 as function of temperature at the composition x=0.5 where a structural instability and a metal-insulator transition have been observed. Three additional phonon modes are observed compared to samples with larger x. An in-situ annealing study (T_max=550 K) with the initial presence of water vapor at ambient conditions reveals an irreversible structural instability of this composition.

Origin of the shadow Fermi surface in Bi-based cuprates

We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the shadow Fermi surface in one layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta and two layer (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. We find the shadow band to have the same peakwidth and dispersion as the main band. In addition, the shadow band/main band intensity ratio is found to be binding energy independent. Consequently, it is concluded that the shadow bands in Bi-based HTSC do not originate from antiferromagnetic interactions but have a structural origin.

Two-Dimensional Geometry of Spin Excitations in the High Temperature Superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x

The fundamental building block of the copper oxide superconductors is a Cu4O4 square plaquette. In most of these materials, the plaquettes are slightly distorted and form a rectangular lattice. An influential theory predicts that high-temperature superconductivity is nucleated in "stripes" aligned along one of the axes of this lattice. This theory had received strong support from experiments that appeared to indicate a one-dimensional character of the magnetic excitations in the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.6. Here we report neutron scattering data on "untwinned" YBa2Cu3O6+x crystals, in which the orientation of the rectangular lattice is maintained throughout the entire volume. Contrary to the earlier claim, we demonstrate that the geometry of the magnetic fluctuations is two-dimensional. Rigid stripe arrays therefore appear to be ruled out over a wide range of doping levels in YBa2Cu3O6+x, but the data may be consistent with liquid-crystalline stripe order.

In-Plane Spectral Weight Shift of Charge Carriers in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.9}$

The temperature dependent redistribution of the spectral weight of the $CuO_2$ plane derived conduction band of the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.9}$ high temperature superconductor (T_c = 92.7 K) was studied with wide-band (from 0.01 to 5.6 eV) spectroscopic ellipsometry. A superconductivity - induced transfer of the spectral weight involving a high energy scale in excess of 1 eV was observed. Correspondingly, the charge carrier spectral weight was shown to decrease in the superconducting state. The ellipsometric data also provide detailed information about the evolution of the optical self-energy in the normal and superconducting states.

Bulk antiferromagnetism in $\bf Na_{0.82}CoO_2$ single crystals

Susceptibility, specific heat, and muon spin rotation measurements on high-quality single crystals of $\rm Na_{0.82}CoO_2$ have revealed bulk antiferromagnetism with Néel temperature $\rm T_N = 19.8 \pm 0.1$ K and an ordered moment perpendicular to the $\rm CoO_2$ layers. The magnetic order encompasses nearly 100% of the crystal volume. The susceptibility exhibits a broad peak around 30 K, characteristic of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The in-plane resistivity is metallic at high temperatures and exhibits a minimum at $\rm T_N$.

The crystal growth and characterization of NaxCoO2 and NaxCoO2yH2O

A systematic study of NaxCoO2 (x=0.50 - 0.90) and NaxCoO2 yH(D)2O (x=0.26 - 0.42, y=1.3) has been performed to determine phase stability and the effect of hydration on the structural and superconducting properties of this system. We show that a careful control of the Na deintercalation process and hydration dynamics is possible in single crystals of this system. Furthermore, we give experimental evidence that the dependence of the superconducting transition temperature on Na content is much weaker than reported earlier. Implications of this effect for the understanding of the superconducting phase diagram are discussed.

Charge ordering and magneto-polarons in Na$_{0.82}$CoO$_2$

Using spectral ellipsometry, we have measured the dielectric function of a Na$_{0.82(2)}$CoO$_2$ crystal that exhibits bulk antiferromagnetism with T$_{N}$=19.8 K. We identify two prominent transitions as a function of temperature. The first one at 280 K involves marked changes of the electronic and the lattice response that are indicative of charge ordering in the CoO$_{2}$ layers. The second transition coincides with T$_{N}$=19.8 K and reveals a sizeable spin-charge coupling. The data are discussed in terms of charge ordering and formation of magneto-polarons due to a charge-induced spin-state transition of adjacent Co$^{3+}$ ions.

Manifestation of the magnetic resonance mode in the nodal quasiparticle lifetime in superconducting cuprates

Studying the nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates by photoemission with highly improved momentum resolution, we show that a new "kink" feature in the scattering rate is a key to uncover the nature of electron correlations in these compounds. Our data provide evidence that the main doping independent contribution to the scattering can be well understood in terms of the conventional Fermi liquid model, while the additional doping dependent contribution has a magnetic origin. This sheds doubt on applicability of a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism to high temperature superconductors.

Magnetism, Charge Order and Giant Magnetoresistance in SrFeO$_{3-δ}$ Single Crystals

The electronic and magnetic properties of SrFeO$_{3-δ}$ single crystals with controlled oxygen content ($0 \leq δ\leq 0.19$) have been studied systematically by susceptibility, transport and spectroscopic techniques. An intimate correlation between the spin-charge ordering and the electronic transport behavior is found. Giant negative as well as positive magnetoresistance are observed.

Intrinsic Josephson Effects in the Magnetic Superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8

We have measured interlayer current transport in small sized RuSr2GdCu2O8 single crystals. We find a clear intrinsic Josephson effect showing that the material acts as a natural superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-insulator-superconductor superlattice. So far, we detected no unconventional behavior due to the magnetism of the RuO2 layers.

On the origin of the A$_{1g}$ and B$_{1g}$ electronic Raman scattering peaks in the superconducting state of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

The electronic Raman scattering has been investigated in optimally oxygen doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals as well as in crystals with non-magnetic, Zn, and magnetic, Ni, impurities. We found that the intensity of the A$_{1g}$ peak is impurity independent and their energy to $T_{c}$ ratio is almost constant ($2Δ/k_{B}T_{c}\sim5$). Moreover, the signal at the B$_{1g}$ channel is completely smeared out when non-magnetic Zn impurities are present. These results are qualitatively interpreted in terms of the Zeyher and Greco's theory that relates the electronic Raman scattering in the A$_{1g}$ and B$_{1g}$ channels to \textit{d}-CDW and superconducting order parameters fluctuations, respectively.

Oxygen superstructures throughout the phase diagram of $\bf (Y,Ca)Ba_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}$

Short-range lattice superstructures have been studied with high-energy x-ray diffuse scattering in underdoped, optimally doped, and overdoped $\rm (Y,Ca)Ba_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}$. A new four-unit-cell superstructure was observed in compounds with $x\sim 0.95$. Its temperature, doping, and material dependence was used to attribute its origin to short-range oxygen vacancy ordering, rather than electronic instabilities in the $\rm CuO_2$ layers. No significant diffuse scattering is observed in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_{8}$. The oxygen superstructures must be taken into account when interpreting spectral anomalies in $\rm (Y,Ca)Ba_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}$.

Effect of Na content and hydration on the excitation spectrum of the cobaltite Na_xCoO_2 yH_2O

We report on a Raman scattering study on the superconducting cobaltite $Na_xCoO_2\cdot yH_2O$ as function of Na content and hydration (x$\approx$1/3, 3/4 and y$\approx$0, 2/3, 4/3). The observed phonon scattering and scattering continua are analyzed in terms of lattice strain due to the structural misfit and disorder. Hydration, due to the intercalation of one or two $H_2O$ layers, releases a part of this strain. Our Raman data suggest a connection between disorder on the partly occupied Na sites, the split off of the $a_{1g}$ level from the other $t_{2g}$ states of $Co^{4+}$ and superconductivity.

Two resonant magnetic modes in an overdoped high-$\bf T_c$ superconductor

A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the overdoped high temperature copper oxide superconductor ${Y_{0.9}Ca_{0.1}Ba_{2}Cu_3O_{7}}$ reveals two distinct magnetic resonant modes in the superconducting state. The modes differ in their symmetry with respect to exchange between adjacent copper oxide layers. Counterparts of the mode with odd symmetry, but not the one with even symmetry, had been observed before at lower doping levels. The observation of the even mode resolves a long-standing puzzle, and the spectral weight ratio of both modes yields an estimate of the onset of particle-hole spin-flip excitations.

C-axis lattice dynamics in Bi-based cuprate superconductors

We present results of a systematic study of the c axis lattice dynamics in single layer Bi2Sr2CuO6 (Bi2201), bilayer Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and trilayer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) cuprate superconductors. Our study is based on both experimental data obtained by spectral ellipsometry on single crystals and theoretical calculations. The calculations are carried out within the framework of a classical shell model, which includes long-range Coulomb interactions and short-range interactions of the Buckingham form in a system of polarizable ions. Using the same set of the shell model parameters for Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223, we calculate the frequencies of the Brillouin-zone center phonon modes of A2u symmetry and suggest the phonon mode eigenvector patterns. We achieve good agreement between the calculated A2u eigenfrequencies and the experimental values of the c axis TO phonon frequencies which allows us to make a reliable phonon mode assignment for all three Bi-based cuprate superconductors. We also present the results of our shell model calculations for the Gamma-point A1g symmetry modes in Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 and suggest an assignment that is based on the published experimental Raman spectra. The superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies recently observed in the c axis infrared and resonant Raman scattering spectra in trilayer Bi2223 are consistently explained with the suggested assignment.

Anomalous oxygen isotope effect on the in-plane FIR conductivity of detwinned YBa2Cu3$^{16,18}$O$_{6.9}$

We observe an anomalous oxygen isotope effect on the a-axis component of the far-infrared electronic response of detwinned YBa2Cu3$^{16,18}$O$_{6.9}$. For $^{18}$O a pronounced low-energy electronic mode (LEM) appears around 240 cm$^{-1}$. This a-axis LEM exhibits a clear aging effect, after one year it is shifted to 190 cm$^{-1}$. For $^{16}$O we cannot resolve a corresponding a-axis LEM above 120 cm$^{-1}$. We interpret the LEM in terms of a collective electronic mode that is pinned by `isotopic defects', i.e. by the residual $^{16}$O in the matrix of $^{18}$O.
