Elliptical hole pockets in the Fermi surfaces of unhydrated and hydrated sodium cobalt oxides

The surprise discovery of superconductivity below 5K in sodium cobalt oxides when hydrated with water has caught the attention of experimentalists and theorists alike. Most explanations for its occurence have focused heavily on the properties of some small elliptically shaped pockets predicted to be the electronically dominant Fermi surface sheet, but direct attempts to look for them have instead cast serious doubts over their existence. Here we present evidence that these pockets do indeed exist, based on bulk measurements of the electron momentum distribution in unhydrated and hydrated sodium cobalt oxides using the technique of x-ray Compton scattering.

Spectroscopic distinction between the normal state pseudogap and the superconducting gap of cuprate high T_{c} superconductors

We report on broad-band infrared ellipsometry measurements of the c-axis conductivity of underdoped RBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-d} (R=Y, Nd, and La) single crystals. Our data provide a detailed account of the spectral weight (SW) redistributions due to the normal state pseudogap (PG) and the superconducting (SC) gap. They show that these phenomena involve different energy scales, exhibit distinct doping dependencies and thus are likely of different origin. In particular, the SW redistribution in the PG state closely resembles the one of a conventional charge- or spin density wave (CDW or SDW) system.

Comment on "Raman spectroscopy study of NaxCoO2 and superconducting NaxCoO2 yH2O"

The effect of surface degradation of the thermolectric cobaltite on Raman spectra is discussed and compared to experimental results from Co3O4 single crystals. We conclude that on NaCl flux grown NaxCoO2 crystals a surface layer of Co3O4 easily forms that leads to the observation of an intense phonon around 700 cm-1 [Phys. Rev. B 70, 052502 (2004)]. Raman spectra on freshly cleaved crystals from optical floating zone ovens do not show such effects and have a high frequency phonon cut-off at approximately 600 cm -1 [Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 167204 (2006)]. We discuss the relation of structural dimensionality, electronic correlations and the high frequency phonon cut-off of the thermolectric cobaltite.

Odd and even magnetic resonant modes in highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+delta}

We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram.

A single intrinsic Josephson junction with double-sided fabrication technique

We make stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) imbedded in the bulk of very thin ($d\leq 100$~nm) $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}}$ single crystals. By precisely controlling the etching depth during the double-sided fabrication process, the stacks can be reproducibly tailor-made to be of any microscopic height ($0-9 \mathrm{nm} <d$), i.e. enclosing a specified number of IJJ (0-6), including the important case of a single junction. We discuss reproducible gap-like features in the current-voltage characteristics of the samples at high bias.

Spin singlet pairing in the superconducting state of NaxCoO2\cdot1.3H2O: evidence from a ^{59}Co Knight shift in a single crystal

We report a ^{59}Co Knight shift measurement in a single crystal of the cobalt oxide superconductor Na_{x}CoO_2\cdot1.3H_2O (T_c=4.25 K). We find that the shift due to the spin susceptibility, K^s, is substantially large and anisotropic, with the spin shift along the a-axis K^s_a being two times that along the c-axis K^s_c. The shift decreases with decreasing temperature (T) down to T\sim100 K, then becomes a constant until superconductivity sets in. Both K^s_a and K^s_c decrease below T_c. Our results indicate unambiguously that the electron pairing in the superconducting state is in the spin singlet form.

Unadulterated spectral function of low energy quasiparticles: Bi-2212, nodal direction

Fitting the momentum distribution photoemission spectra to the Voigt profile appears to be a robust procedure to purify the interaction effects from the experimental resolution. In application to Bi-2212 high-Tc cuprates, the procedure reveals the true scattering rate at low binding energies and temperatures, and, consequently, the true value of the elastic scattering. Reaching the minimal value ~ 16 meV, the elastic scattering does not reveal a systematic dependence on doping level, but is rather sensitive to impurity concentration, and can be explained by the forward scattering on out-of-plane impurities. The inelastic scattering is found to form well-defined quasiparticles with the quadratic and cubic energy dependence of the scattering rate above and below Tc, respectively. The observed energy-temperature asymmetry of the scattering rate is also discussed.

Doping Dependence of Bilayer Resonant Spin Excitations in $\bf (Y,Ca)Ba_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$

Resonant magnetic modes with odd and even symmetries were studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the bilayer high-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_2Cu_3O_{6+y}$ over a wide doping range. The threshold of the spin excitation continuum in the superconducting state, deduced from the energies and spectral weights of both modes, is compared with the superconducting d-wave gap, measured on the same samples by electronic Raman scattering in the $B_{1g}$ symmetry. Above a critical doping level of $δ\simeq 0.19$, both mode energies and the continuum threshold coincide. We find a simple scaling relationship between the characteristic energies and spectral weights of both modes, which indicates that the resonant modes are bound states in the superconducting energy gap, as predicted by the spin-exciton model of the resonant mode.

Magnetoresistance Effects in SrFeO(3-x): Dependence on Phase Composition and Relation to Magnetic and Charge Order

Single crystals of iron(IV) rich oxides SrFeO(3-x) with controlled oxygen content have been studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, magnetotransport measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared ellipsometry in order to relate the large magnetoresistance (MR) effects in this system to phase composition, magnetic and charge order. It is shown that three different types of MR effects occur. In cubic SrFeO3 (x = 0) a large negative MR of 25% at 9 T is associated with a hitherto unknown 60 K magnetic transition and a subsequent drop in resistivity. The 60 K transition appears in addition to the onset of helical ordering at ~130 K. In crystals with vacancy-ordered tetragonal SrFeO(3-x) as majority phase (x ~0.15) a coincident charge/antiferromagnetic ordering transition near 70 K gives rise to a negative giant MR effect of 90% at 9 T. A positive MR effect is observed in tetragonal and orthorhombic materials with increased oxygen deficiency (x = 0.19, 0.23) which are insulating at low temperatures. Phase mixtures can result in a complex superposition of these different MR phenomena. The MR effects in SrFeO(3-x) differ from those in manganites as no ferromagnetic states are involved.

"Kinks", Nodal Bilayer Splitting and Interband Scattering in YBCO

We apply the new-generation ARPES methodology to the most widely studied cuprate superconductor YBCO. Considering the nodal direction, we found noticeable renormalization effects known as "kinks" both in the quasiparticle dispersion and scattering rate, the bilayer splitting and evidence for strong interband scattering -- all the characteristic features of the nodal quasiparticles detected earlier in BSCCO. The typical energy scale and the doping dependence of the "kinks" clearly point to their intimate relation with the spin-1 resonance seen in the neutron scattering experiments. Our findings strongly suggest a universality of the electron dynamics in the bilayer superconducting cuprates and a dominating role of the spin-fluctuations in the formation of the quasiparticles along the nodal direction.

Anomalous electronic Raman scattering in Na_xCoO_2 H_2O

Raman scattering experiments on Na_{x}CoO_2 yH_2O single crystals show a broad electronic continuum with a pronounced peak around 100 cm-1 and a cutoff at approximately 560 cm-1over a wide range of doping levels. The electronic Raman spectra in superconducting and non-superconducting samples are similar at room temperature, but evolve in markedly different ways with decreasing temperature. For superconducting samples, the low-energy spectral weight is depleted upon cooling below T* sim 150K, indicating a opening of a pseudogap that is not present in non-superconducting materials. Weak additional phonon modes observed below T* suggest that the pseudogap is associated with charge ordering.

Constituents of the "kink" in high-Tc cuprates

Applying the Kramers-Kronig consistent procedure, developed earlier, we investigate in details the formation of the quasiparticle spectrum along the nodal direction of high-Tc cuprates. The heavily discussed "70 meV kink" on the renormalized dispersion exhibits a strong temperature and doping dependence when purified from structural effects. This dependence is well understood in terms of fermionic and bosonic constituents of the self-energy. The latter follows the evolution of the spin-fluctuation spectrum, emerging below T* and sharpening below Tc, and is the main responsible for the formation of the kink in question.

Magnetic order in the pseudogap phase of high-$T_C$ superconductors

One of the leading issues in high-$T_C$ superconductors is the origin of the pseudogap phase in underdoped cuprates. Using polarized elastic neutron diffraction, we identify a novel magnetic order in the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ system. The observed magnetic order preserves translational symmetry as proposed for orbital moments in the circulating current theory of the pseudogap state. To date, it is the first direct evidence of an hidden order parameter characterizing the pseudogap phase in high-$T_C$ cuprates.

Non-magnetic insulator state in Na1CoO2 and phase separation of Na vacancies

Crystallographic, magnetic and NMR properties of a NaxCoO2 single crystal with x~1 are presented. We identify the stoichiometric Na1CoO2 phase, which is shown to be a non-magnetic insulator, as expected for homogeneous planes of Co3+ ions with S=0. In addition, we present evidence that, because of slight average Na deficiency, chemical and electronic phase separation leads to a segregation of Na vacancies into the well-defined, magnetic, Na0.8CoO2 phase. The importance of phase separation is discussed in the context of magnetic order for x~0.8 and the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition for x->1.

Effect of Zn and Ni impurities on the quasiparticle renormalization in Bi-2212

The Cu substitution by Zn and Ni impurities and its influence on the mass renormalization effects in angle resolved photoelectron spectra (ARPES) of Bi-2212 is addressed. We show that the nonmagnetic Zn atoms have much stronger effect both in nodal and antinodal parts of the Brillouin zone than magnetic Ni. The observed changes are consistent with the behaviour of the spin resonance mode as seen by inelastic neutron scattering in YBCO. This strongly suggests that the "peak-dip-hump" and the "kink" in ARPES on the one side and neutron resonance on the other are closely related features.

The Ruthenocuprates - Natural Superconductor-Ferromagnet Multilayers

The recently discovered ruthenocuprates have attracted great interest because of the microscopic coexistence of superconducting and ferromagnetic order. Typically, these materials become magnetically ordered at temperatures around 125-145 K and superconductivity sets in between 15 and 50 K. While superconductivity arises in the CuO2 layers the RuO2 layers in between order magnetically. In this paper we summarize some of the crystallographic, magnetic and superconducting properties of the ruthenocuprates, as obtained from investigations on polycrystalline samples as well as single crystals.

Absence of an isotope effect in the magnetic resonance in high-$T_c$ superconductors

An inelastic neutron scattering experiment has been performed in the high-temperature superconductor $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.89}$ to search for an oxygen-isotope shift of the well-known magnetic resonance mode at 41 meV. Contrary to a recent prediction (I. Eremin, {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 69}, 094517 (2004)), a negligible shift (at best $\leq$ +0.2 meV) of the resonance energy is observed upon oxygen isotope substitution ($^{16}$O$\to^{18}$O). This suggests a negligible spin-phonon interaction in the high-$T_c$ cuprates at optimal doping.

Magnetic ordering and spin waves in $\bf Na_{0.82}CoO_2$

Na$_x$CoO$_2$, the parent compound of the recently synthesized superconductor Na$_x$CoO$_2$:$y$H$_2$O, exhibits bulk antiferromagnetic order below $\sim20$ K for 0.75 $\leq x \leq$ 0.9. We have performed neutron scattering experiments in which we observed Bragg reflections corresponding to A-type antiferromagnetic order in a Na$_{0.82}$CoO$_2$ single crystal and characterized the corresponding spin-wave dispersions. The spin waves exhibit a strongly energy-dependent linewidth. The in-plane and out-of-plane exchange constants resulting from a fit to a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model are similar in magnitude, which is unexpected in view of the layered crystal structure of Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$. Possible implications of these observations are discussed.
