Suppression of the critical temperature of superconducting NdFeAs(OF) single crystals by Kondo-like defect sites induced by alpha-particle irradiation

We report a comprehensive investigation of the suppression of the critical temperature Tc of NdFeAs(OF) single crystal by alpha-particle irradiation. Our data indicate that irradiation defects produce both nonmagnetic and magnetic scattering, resulting in the Kondo-like excess resistance $Δρ(T)\propto ln T$ over 2 decades in temperatures above $T_c$. Despite high densities of irradiation defects, the dose at which $T_c$ is suppressed to zero is comparable to that for MgB2 but is well above the corresponding values for cuprates.

Template engineering of Co-doped BaFe2As2 single-crystal thin films

Understanding new superconductors requires high-quality epitaxial thin films to explore intrinsic electromagnetic properties, control grain boundaries and strain effects, and evaluate device applications. So far superconducting properties of ferropnictide thin films appear compromised by imperfect epitaxial growth and poor connectivity of the superconducting phase. Here we report novel template engineering using single-crystal intermediate layers of (001) SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 grown on various perovskite substrates that enables genuine epitaxial films of Co-doped BaFe2As2 with high transition temperature (zero resistivity Tc of 21.5K), small transition widths (delta Tc = 1.3K), superior Jc of 4.5 MA/cm2 (4.2K, self field) and strong c-axis flux pinning. Implementing SrTiO3 or BaTiO3 templates to match the alkaline earth layer in the Ba-122 with the alkaline earth-oxygen layer in the templates opens new avenues for epitaxial growth of ferropnictides on multi-functional single crystal substrates. Beyond superconductors, it provides a framework for growing heteroepitaxial intermetallic compounds on various substrates by matching interfacial layers between templates and thin film overlayers.

Magnetic ordering of the RE lattice in REFeAsO: the odd case of Sm. A specific heat investigation in high magnetic field

We have investigated the evolution of the low temperature specific heat anomaly (TN=5.4K in zero field) in polycrystalline SmFeAsO samples with magnetic fields up to 35T. The anomaly remains very sharp up to 16T and becomes rounded with little shift in temperature at higher fields. Doped (superconducting) SmFeAsO0.85F0.15 sample shows a similar behavior up to 16T. The initial slope of the critical field dBc/dT is 160T/K for undoped SmFeAsO and 70T/K for doped SmFeAsO0.85F0.15, with Bc(T) defined at the peak of the specific heat anomaly. The insensitivity to the application of an external magnetic field is unique to Sm and is not observed in CeFeAsO whose anomaly shifts with initial slope dBc/dT=5.7T/K. We argue that SmFeAsO(F) presents an unprecedented case of spin reorientation at the antiferromagnetic transition.

Multi-band conductivity and multi-gap superconductivity in V3Si from optical measurements on films at terahertz frequencies

The possibility of multi-band conductivity and multi-gap superconductivity is explored in oriented V3Si thin films by means of reflectance and transmittance measurements at terahertz frequencies. The temperature dependence of the transmittance spectra in the normal state gives evidence of two bands contributing to the film conductivity. This outcome is consistent with electronic structure calculations performed within density functional theory. On this basis, we performed a detailed data analysis and found that all optical data can be consistently accounted for within a two-band framework, with the presence of two optical gaps in the superconducting state corresponding to 2D=kTc values close to 1.8 and 3.8.

Magnetic characterization of undoped and 15%F doped LaFeAsO and SmFeAsO compounds

In this paper the magnetic behaviour of undoped and 15% F doped SmFeAsO (Sm-1111) and LaFeAsO (La-1111) samples is presented and discussed. Magnetization measurements are not a simple tool to use for the characterisation of the new family of Fe-based superconductors because magnetic impurities can be easily formed during the preparation procedure and may affect the magnetic signal. In spite of this problem bulk magnetization measurements, properly treated, may give very useful information. In the undoped samples we gathered the main aspects of the physical behavior of the 1111 phase, i.e. the onset of the Spin Density Wave (SDW), the antiferromagnetic ordering at the Sm sublattice and the susceptibility increase with increasing temperature above the SDW temperature, and, in addition, we were able to estimate the Pauli contribution to susceptibility and therein the Wilson ratio both for LaFeAsO and SmFeAsO compounds, and the amplitude of the jump at the SDW temperature. In the doped samples, while the presence of magnetic signals due to impurities is dominating in the normal state, the superconducting behavior may be clearly observed and studied. In particular, in the Sm-1111 superconducting sample the coexistence-competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic ordering of the Sm ions was clearly observed.

Small anisotropy, weak thermal fluctuations, and high field superconductivity in Co-doped iron pnictide Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We performed high-field magnetotransport and magnetization measurements on a single crystal of the 122-phase iron pnictide Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Unlike the HTS cuprates and 1111-phase oxypnictides, Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 showed practically no broadening of the resistive transitions under magnetic fields up to 45 T. The mass anisotropy gamma = Hc2ab/Hc2c deduced from the slopes of the upper critical field dHc2ab/dT = 4.9T/K and dHc2c/dT = 2.5T/K decreases from ~2 near Tc, to ~1.5 at lower temperatures. We observed the irreversibility field close to Hc2, and a rather unusual symmetric volume pinning force curve Fp(H) suggestive of strong pinning nano-structure.

Evidence for two distinct scales of current flow in polycrystalline Sm and Nd iron oxypnictides

Early studies have found quasi-reversible magnetization curves in polycrystalline bulk rare-earth iron oxypnictides that suggest either wide-spread obstacles to intergranular current or very weak vortex pinning. In the present study of polycrystalline samarium and neodymium rare-earth iron oxypnictide samples made by high pressure synthesis, the hysteretic magnetization is significantly enhanced. Magneto optical imaging and study of the field dependence of the remanent magnetization as a function of particle size both show that global currents over the whole sample do exist but that the intergranular and intragranular current densities have distinctively different temperature dependences and differ in magnitude by about 1000. Assuming that the highest current density loops are restricted to circulation only within grains leads to values of ~5 MA/cm2 at 5 K and self field, while whole-sample current densities, though two orders of magnitude lower are 1000-10000 A/cm2, some two orders of magnitude higher than in random polycrystalline cuprates. We cannot yet be certain whether this large difference in global and intragrain current density is intrinsic to the oxypnictides or due to extrinsic barriers to current flow, because the samples contain significant second phase, some of which wets the grain boundaries and produces evidences of SNS proximity effect in the whole sample critical current.

Can antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist in the high-field paramagnetic superconductor Nd(O,F)FeAs?

We present measurements of the temperature and field dependencies of the magnetization M(T,H) of Nd(O0.89F0.11)FeAs at fields up to 33T, which show that superconductivity with the critical temperature Tc ~ 51K cannot coexist with antiferromagnetic ordering. Although M(T,H) at 55 < T < 140K exhibits a clear Curie-Weiss temperature dependence corresponding to the Neel temperature TN ~ 11-12K, the behavior of M(T,H) below Tc is only consistent with either paramagnetism of weakly interacting magnetic moments or a spin glass state. We suggest that the anomalous magnetic behavior of an unusual high-field paramagnetic superconductor Nd(O1-xFx)FeAs is mostly determined by the magnetic Nd ions.

Evidence for electromagnetic granularity in the polycrystalline iron-based superconductor LaO0.89F0.11FeAs

The new rare-earth arsenate superconductors are layered, low carrier density compounds with many similarities to the high-Tc cuprates. An important question is whether they also exhibit weak-coupling across randomly oriented grain-boundaries. In this work we show considerable evidence for such weak-coupling by study of the dependence of magnetization in bulk and powdered samples. Bulk sample magnetization curves show very little hysteresis while remanent magnetization shows almost no sample size dependence, even after powdering. We conclude that these samples exhibit substantial electromagnetic granularity on a scale approximating the grain size, though we cannot yet determine whether this is intrinsic or extrinsic.

Microwave surface resistance of pristine and neutron-irradiated MgB2 samples in magnetic field

We report on the microwave surface resistance of two polycrystalline Mg11B2 samples; one consists of pristine material, the other has been irradiated at very high neutron fluence. It has already been reported that in the strongly irradiated sample the two gaps merge into a single value. The mw surface resistance has been measured in the linear regime as a function of the temperature and the DC magnetic field, at increasing and decreasing fields. The results obtained in the strongly irradiated sample are quite well justified in the framework of a generalized Coffey and Clem model, in which we take into account the field distribution inside the sample due to the critical state. The results obtained in the pristine sample show several anomalies, especially at low temperatures, which cannot be justified in the framework of standard models for the fluxon dynamics. Only at temperatures near Tc and for magnetic fields greater than 0.5Hc2(T) the experimental data can quantitatively be accounted for by the Coffey and Clem model, provided that the upper-critical-field anisotropy is taken into due account.

Probing the electron-phonon coupling in MgB2 through magnetoresistance measurements in neutron irradiated thin films

We report magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on MgB2 and the corresponding full account from ab-initio calculations; we suggest that this combination can be a useful tool to probe electron- phonon coupling. We obtain good quantitative agreement between high field measurements on neutron irradiated epitaxial thin films and calculations within Bloch-Boltzmann transport theory over a wide range of magnetic fields (0-28 T) and temperatures (40-300 K), and as a function of the field orientation. The crossovers between in-plane and out-of-plane MR, experimentally observed as a function of either disorder or temperature are well reproduced indicating that disorder and interaction with phonons strongly affect the scattering rate of s-carriers.

Systematic study of disorder induced by neutron irradiation in MgB2 thin films

The effects of neutron irradiation on normal state and superconducting properties of epitaxial magnesium diboride thin films are studied up to fluences of 1020 cm-2. All the properties of the films change systematically upon irradiation. Critical temperature is suppressed and, at the highest fluence, no superconducting transition is observed down to 1.8 K. Residual resistivity progressively increases from 1 to 190 microohmcm; c axis expands and then saturates at the highest damage level. We discuss the mechanism of damage through the comparison with other damage procedures. The normal state magnetoresistivity of selected samples measured up to high fields (28 and 45T) allows to determine unambiguously the scattering rates in each band; the crossover between the clean and dirty limit in each sample can be monitored. This set of samples, with controlled amount of disorder, is suitable to study the puzzling problem of critical field in magnesium diboride thin films. The measured critical field values are extremely high (of the order of 50T in the parallel direction at low fluences) and turns out to be rather independent on the experimental resistivity, at least at low fluences. A simple model to explain this phenomenology is presented.

Point-contact spectroscopy in neutron-irradiated Mg^{11}B_2

We report on recent results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in Mg^{11}B_2 polycrystals irradiated at different neutron fluences up to 1.4 x 10^{20} cm^{-2}. The point contacts were made by putting a small drop of Ag paint -- acting as the counterelectrode -- on the cleaved surface of the samples. The gap amplitudes were extracted from the experimental conductance curves, showing Andreev-reflection features, through a two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk fit and reported as a function of the Andreev critical temperature of the junctions, TcA. The resulting Delta_sigma(TcA) and Delta_pi(TcA) curves show a clear merging of the gaps when TcA ~ 9K that perfectly confirms the findings of specific-heat measurements in the same samples. Anomalous contacts with TcA > Tc (being Tc the bulk critical temperature) were often obtained, particularly in samples irradiated at very high fluences. Their fit gave a different dependence of Delta_pi on TcA. The possible origin of these contacts is discussed in terms of local current-induced annealing and/or nanoscale inhomogeneities observed by STM in the most irradiated samples.

Effect of the four-sheet Fermi surface on magnetoresistivity of MgB2

Recent experimental data of anisotropic magnetoresistivity measured in MgB2 films have shown an intriguing behaviour: the angular dependence of magnetoresistivity changes dramatically with temperature and disorder. In order to explain such phenomenology, in this work, we extend our previous analyses on multiband transverse magnetoresistivity in magnesium diboride, by calculating its analytic expression, assuming a constant anisotropic Fermi surface mass tensor. The calculation is done for arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the crystalline axes and for the current density either perpendicular or parallel to the magnetic field. This approach allows to extract quite univocally the values of the scattering times in the s- and p- bands by fitting experimental data with a simple analytic expression. We also extend the analysis to the magnetoresistivity of polycrystalline samples, with an arbitrary angle between the current density and the magnetic field, taking into account the anisotropy of each randomly oriented grain. Thereby, we propose magnetoresistivity as a very powerful characterization tool to explore the effect of disorder by irradiation or selective doping as well as of phonon scattering in each one of the two types of bands, in single crystals and polycrystalline samples, which is a crucial issue in the study of magnesium diboride.

Effects of neutron irradiation on polycrystalline Mg11B2

We studied the influence of the disorder introduced in polycrystalline MgB2 samples by neutron irradiation. To circumvent self shielding effects due to the strong interaction between thermal neutrons and 10B we employed isotopically enriched 11B which contains 40 times less 10B than natural B. The comparison of electrical and structural properties of different series of samples irradiated in different neutron sources, also using Cd shields, allowed us to conclude that, despite the low 10B content, the main damage mechanisms are caused by thermal neutrons, whereas fast neutrons play a minor role. Irradiation leads to an improvement in both upper critical field and critical current density for an exposure level in the range 1-2x1018 cm-2. With increasing fluence the superconducting properties are depressed. An in-depth analysis of the critical field and current density behaviour has been carried out to identify what scattering and pinning mechanisms come into play. Finally the correlation between some characteristic lengths and the transition widths is analysed.

Observation of the Crossover from Two-Gap to Single-Gap Superconductivity through Specific Heat Measurements in Neutron Irradiated MgB2

We report specific heat measurements in neutron irradiated MgB2 samples, for which the critical temperature has been suppressed down to 8.5 K, but the superconducting transition remains extremely sharp, indicative of a defect structure extremely homogeneous. Our results demonstrate that the two-gap feature is evident in the temperature range above 21 K, while the single-gap superconductivity is well established as a bulk property not associated to local disorder fluctuations when Tc is decreased down to 11 K.

Magnetoresistivity in MgB2 as a probe of disorder in p- and s-bands

In this paper we present normal state magnetoresistivity data of magnesium diboride epitaxial thin films with different levels of disorder, measured at 42K in magnetic fields up to 45 Tesla. Disorder was introduced in a controlled way either by means of neutron irradiation or by carbon doping. From a quantitative analysis of the magnetoresistivity curves with the magnetic field either parallel or perpendicular to the plane of the film, we extract the ratio of the scattering times in p- and s-bands. We demonstrate that the undoped unirradiated thin film has p scattering times smaller than s ones; upon irradiation, both bands become increasingly more disordered; eventually the highly irradiated sample (neutron fluence 7.7X1017 cm-2) and the C-doped sample have comparable scattering times in the two types of bands. This description of the effect of disorder in the two kinds of bands on transport is consistent with the residual resistivity values and with the temperature dependence of the resistivity.

Enhanced flux pinning in neutron irradiated MgB2

We study the effect of neutron irradiation on the critical current density Jc of isotopically pure polycrystalline Mg11B2 samples. For fluences in the range 1017-1018 cm-2, Jc is enhanced and its dependence on magnetic field is significantly improved: we demonstrate that, in this regime, point-like pinning centers are effectively introduced in the system proportionally to the neutron fluence. Instead, for larger fluences, a strong suppression of the critical temperature accompanied by a decrease of both the upper critical field Bc2 and Jc is found.
