Odd and even magnetic resonant modes in highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+delta}

We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram.

Neutron diffraction study of YVO3, NdVO3, and TbVO3

The structural and magnetic properties of YVO3, NdVO3 and TbVO3 were investigated by single-crystal and powder neutron diffraction. YVO3 shows a structural phase transition at 200 K from an orthorhombic structure with the space group Pbnm to a monoclinic one with the space group P21/b. But supplementary high-resolution synchrotron diffraction experiments showed that the monoclinic distortion is extremely small. A group theoretical analysis shows that this magnetic state in the monoclinic phase is incompatible with the lattice structure, unless terms of higher than bilinear order in the spin operators are incorporated in the spin Hamiltonian. This observation is discussed in the light of recent theories invoking unusual many-body correlations between the vanadium t2g orbitals. A structural phase transition back to the orthorhombic space group Pbnm is observed upon cooling below 77 K. This transition is accompanied by a rearrangement of the magnetic structure into a mode compatible with the lattice structure. The crystal structures of NdVO3 and TbVO3 are closely similar to that of YVO3. However, only a single magnetic phase transition was found in the vanadium sublattice down to 9.5 K. Below 60 K the magnetic moments of the Nd- and Tb-ions are gradually polarized by the ordered vanadium moments. Below 11 K, we found a noncollinear order of the terbium moments.

Crystal structure and high-field magnetism of La2CuO4

Neutron diffraction was used to determine the crystal structure and magnetic ordering pattern of a La2CuO4 single crystal, with and without applied magnetic field. A previously unreported, subtle monoclinic distortion of the crystal structure away from the orthorhombic space group Bmab was detected. The distortion is also present in lightly Sr-doped crystals. A refinement of the crystal structure shows that the deviation from orthorhombic symmetry is predominantly determined by displacements of the apical oxygen atoms. An in-plane magnetic field is observed to drive a continuous reorientation of the copper spins from the orthorhombic b-axis to the c-axis, directly confirming predictions based on prior magnetoresistance and Raman scattering experiments. A spin-flop transition induced by a c-axis oriented field previously reported for non-stoichiometric La2CuO4 is also observed, but the transition field (11.5 T) is significantly larger than that in the previous work.

Doping Dependence of Bilayer Resonant Spin Excitations in $\bf (Y,Ca)Ba_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$

Resonant magnetic modes with odd and even symmetries were studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the bilayer high-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_2Cu_3O_{6+y}$ over a wide doping range. The threshold of the spin excitation continuum in the superconducting state, deduced from the energies and spectral weights of both modes, is compared with the superconducting d-wave gap, measured on the same samples by electronic Raman scattering in the $B_{1g}$ symmetry. Above a critical doping level of $δ\simeq 0.19$, both mode energies and the continuum threshold coincide. We find a simple scaling relationship between the characteristic energies and spectral weights of both modes, which indicates that the resonant modes are bound states in the superconducting energy gap, as predicted by the spin-exciton model of the resonant mode.

Magnetoresistance Effects in SrFeO(3-x): Dependence on Phase Composition and Relation to Magnetic and Charge Order

Single crystals of iron(IV) rich oxides SrFeO(3-x) with controlled oxygen content have been studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, magnetotransport measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared ellipsometry in order to relate the large magnetoresistance (MR) effects in this system to phase composition, magnetic and charge order. It is shown that three different types of MR effects occur. In cubic SrFeO3 (x = 0) a large negative MR of 25% at 9 T is associated with a hitherto unknown 60 K magnetic transition and a subsequent drop in resistivity. The 60 K transition appears in addition to the onset of helical ordering at ~130 K. In crystals with vacancy-ordered tetragonal SrFeO(3-x) as majority phase (x ~0.15) a coincident charge/antiferromagnetic ordering transition near 70 K gives rise to a negative giant MR effect of 90% at 9 T. A positive MR effect is observed in tetragonal and orthorhombic materials with increased oxygen deficiency (x = 0.19, 0.23) which are insulating at low temperatures. Phase mixtures can result in a complex superposition of these different MR phenomena. The MR effects in SrFeO(3-x) differ from those in manganites as no ferromagnetic states are involved.

Orbital excitations in titanates

Raman scattering is used to observe pronounced electronic excitations around 230 meV - well above the two-phonon range - in the Mott insulators LaTiO$_3$ and YTiO$_3$. Based on the temperature, polarization, and photon energy dependence, the modes are identified as orbital excitations. The observed profiles bear a striking resemblance to magnetic Raman modes in the insulating parent compounds of the superconducting cuprates, indicating an unanticipated universality of the electronic excitations in transition metal oxides.

Resonant magnetic excitations at high energy in superconducting $\bf YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.85}$

A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the high temperature superconductor $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.85}$ provides evidence of new resonant magnetic features, in addition to the well known resonant mode at 41 meV: (i) a commensurate magnetic resonance peak at 53 meV with an even symmetry under exchange of two adjacent $\rm CuO_2$ layers; and (ii) high energy incommensurate resonant spin excitations whose spectral weight is around 54 meV. The locus and the spectral weight of these modes can be understood by considering the momentum shape of the electron-hole spin-flip continuum of d-wave superconductors. This provides new insight into the interplay between collective spin excitations and the continuum of electron-hole excitations.

Magnetism, Charge Order and Giant Magnetoresistance in SrFeO$_{3-δ}$ Single Crystals

The electronic and magnetic properties of SrFeO$_{3-δ}$ single crystals with controlled oxygen content ($0 \leq δ\leq 0.19$) have been studied systematically by susceptibility, transport and spectroscopic techniques. An intimate correlation between the spin-charge ordering and the electronic transport behavior is found. Giant negative as well as positive magnetoresistance are observed.

Magnetic Resonant excitations in High-{$\rm T_c$} superconductors

The observation of an unusual spin resonant excitation in the superconducting state of various High-Tc ~copper oxides by inelastic neutron scattering measurements is reviewed. This magnetic mode % (that does not exist in conventional superconductors) is discussed in light of a few theoretical models and likely corresponds to a spin-1 collective mode.

Magnetic neutron scattering study of YVO3: Evidence for an orbital Peierls state

Neutron spectroscopy has revealed a highly unusual magnetic structure and dynamics in YVO$_3$, an insulating pseudocubic perovskite that undergoes a series of temperature induced phase transitions between states with different spin and orbital ordering patterns. A good description of the neutron data is obtained by a theoretical analysis of the spin and orbital correlations of a realistic one-dimensional model. This leads to the tentative identification of one of the phases of YVO$_3$ with the ``orbital Peierls state'', a theoretically proposed many-body state comprised of orbital singlet bonds.

Two resonant magnetic modes in an overdoped high-$\bf T_c$ superconductor

A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the overdoped high temperature copper oxide superconductor ${Y_{0.9}Ca_{0.1}Ba_{2}Cu_3O_{7}}$ reveals two distinct magnetic resonant modes in the superconducting state. The modes differ in their symmetry with respect to exchange between adjacent copper oxide layers. Counterparts of the mode with odd symmetry, but not the one with even symmetry, had been observed before at lower doping levels. The observation of the even mode resolves a long-standing puzzle, and the spectral weight ratio of both modes yields an estimate of the onset of particle-hole spin-flip excitations.

C-axis lattice dynamics in Bi-based cuprate superconductors

We present results of a systematic study of the c axis lattice dynamics in single layer Bi2Sr2CuO6 (Bi2201), bilayer Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and trilayer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) cuprate superconductors. Our study is based on both experimental data obtained by spectral ellipsometry on single crystals and theoretical calculations. The calculations are carried out within the framework of a classical shell model, which includes long-range Coulomb interactions and short-range interactions of the Buckingham form in a system of polarizable ions. Using the same set of the shell model parameters for Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223, we calculate the frequencies of the Brillouin-zone center phonon modes of A2u symmetry and suggest the phonon mode eigenvector patterns. We achieve good agreement between the calculated A2u eigenfrequencies and the experimental values of the c axis TO phonon frequencies which allows us to make a reliable phonon mode assignment for all three Bi-based cuprate superconductors. We also present the results of our shell model calculations for the Gamma-point A1g symmetry modes in Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 and suggest an assignment that is based on the published experimental Raman spectra. The superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies recently observed in the c axis infrared and resonant Raman scattering spectra in trilayer Bi2223 are consistently explained with the suggested assignment.

Anomalous oxygen isotope effect on the in-plane FIR conductivity of detwinned YBa2Cu3$^{16,18}$O$_{6.9}$

We observe an anomalous oxygen isotope effect on the a-axis component of the far-infrared electronic response of detwinned YBa2Cu3$^{16,18}$O$_{6.9}$. For $^{18}$O a pronounced low-energy electronic mode (LEM) appears around 240 cm$^{-1}$. This a-axis LEM exhibits a clear aging effect, after one year it is shifted to 190 cm$^{-1}$. For $^{16}$O we cannot resolve a corresponding a-axis LEM above 120 cm$^{-1}$. We interpret the LEM in terms of a collective electronic mode that is pinned by `isotopic defects', i.e. by the residual $^{16}$O in the matrix of $^{18}$O.

The resonant magnetic mode: a common feature of high-$T_C$ superconductors

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments in high-$T_c$ cuprates have evidenced a new magnetic excitation present in the superconducting state. In particular, recent experiments on single layer Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$, performed near optimum doping ($ T_{c} \sim 90$ K), provide evidence of a sharp magnetic resonant mode below $ T_{c}$, similar to previous reports on the YBCO and BSCCO bilayer systems. This result supports models that ascribe a key role to magnetic excitations in the mechanism of superconductivity.

Magnetic Order and Dynamics in an Orbitally Degenerate Ferromagnetic Insulator

Neutron scattering was used to determine the spin structure and the magnon spectrum of the Mott--Hubbard insulator YTiO$_3$. The magnetic structure is complex, comprising substantial G-type and A-type antiferromagnetic components in addition to the predominant ferromagnetic component. The magnon spectrum, on the other hand, is gapless and nearly isotropic. We show that these findings are inconsistent with the orbitally ordered states thus far proposed for YTiO$_3$ and discuss general implications for a theoretical description of exchange interactions in orbitally degenerate systems.

Structural and Magnetic Instabilities of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CaCu$_2$O$_6$

A neutron scattering study of nonsuperconducting La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CaCu$_2$O$_6$ (x=0 and 0.2), a bilayer copper oxide without CuO chains, has revealed an unexpected tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition with a doping dependent transition temperature. The predominant structural modification below the transition is an in-plane shift of the apical oxygen. In the doped sample, the orthorhombic superstructure is strongly disordered, and a glassy state involving both magnetic and structural degrees of freedom develops at low temperature. The spin correlations are commensurate.

Magnetic Resonant Mode in the Single-Layer High Temperature Superconductor Tl$_2$Ba$_2$Cu$_{6+δ}$

An unusual spin excitation mode observed by neutron scattering has inspired numerous theoretical studies of the interplay between charged quasiparticles and collective spin excitations in the copper oxide high temperature superconductors. The mode has thus far only been observed in materials with crystal structures consisting of copper oxide bilayers, and it is notably absent in the single-layer compound La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$. Neutron scattering data now show that the mode is present in Tl$_2$Ba$_2$Cu$_{6+δ}$, a single-layer compound with T$_c$ $\sim$ 90 K, thus demonstrating that it is a generic feature of the copper oxide superconductors, independent of the layer sequence. This restricts the theoretical models for the origin of the resonant mode and its role in the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.

Antiferromagnetic ordering in superconducting ${\bf YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.5}}$

Commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering has been observed in the superconducting high-$Tc$ cuprate ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.5}}$ (${\rm T_{c}}$=55 K) by polarized and unpolarized elastic neutron scattering. The magnetic peak intensity exhibits a marked enhancement at $T_{c}$. Zero-field $μ$SR experiments demonstrate that the staggered magnetization is not truly static but fluctuates on a nanosecond time scale. These results point towards an unusual spin density wave state coexisting with superconductivity.
