The holonomy Lie $\infty$-groupoid of a singular foliation I

We construct a finite-dimensional higher Lie groupoid integrating a singular foliation $\mathcal{F}$, under the mild assumption that the latter admits a geometric resolution. More precisely, a recursive use of bi-submersions, a tool coming from non-commutative geometry and invented by Androulidakis and Skandalis, allows us to integrate any universal Lie $ \infty$-algebroid of a singular foliation to a Kan simplicial manifold, where all components are made of non-connected manifolds which are all the same finite dimension that can be chosen to be equal to the ranks of a given geometric resolution. Its $1$-truncation is the Androulidakis-Skandalis holonomy groupoid.

An invitation to singular foliations

These lecture notes attempt to invite the reader towards the theory of singular foliations, both smooth and holomorphic. In addition to a systematic review of the foundations, and an attempt to put in order examples and several elementary constructions, we detail several recent tools developed for non-commutative geometry, in particular the holonomy groupoid of Androulidakis and Skandalis and various methods for resolving singularities. We also introduce various homotopic notions, and end with a series of open questions.

Koszul-Tate resolutions and decorated trees

Given a commutative algebra $\mathcal O$, a proper ideal $\mathcal I$, and a resolution of $\mathcal O/ \mathcal I$ by projective $\mathcal O $-modules, we construct an explicit Koszul-Tate resolution. We call it the arborescent Koszul-Tate resolution since it is indexed by decorated trees. When the $ \mathcal O$-module resolution has finite length, only finitely many operations are needed in our constructions -- this is to be compared with the classical Tate algorithm, which requires infinitely many such computations if $ \mathcal I$ is not a complete intersection. As a by-product of our construction, the initial projective $\mathcal O $-module resolution becomes equipped with an explicit $A_\infty$-algebra.

Symplectic resolutions of the quotient of R^2 by a non-finite symplectic group

We construct smooth symplectic resolutions of the quotient of R^2 under some infinite discrete sub-group of GL_2(R) preserving a log-symplectic structure. This extends from algebraic geometry to smooth real differential geometry the Du Val symplectic resolution of C^2/G, with G \subset SL_2(C) a finite group. The first of these infinite groups is G=Z, identified to triangular matrices with spectrum {1}. Smooth functions on the quotient R^2/G come with a natural Poisson bracket, and R^2/Gis for an arbitrary k \geq 1 set-isomorphic to the real Du Val singular variety A_{2k} = {(x,y,z) \in R^3 , x^2 +y^2= z^{2k}}. We show that each one of the usual minimal resolutions of these Du Val varieties are symplectic resolutions of R^2/G. The same holds for G'=Z \rtimes Z/2Z (identified to triangular matrices with spectrum {\pm 1}), with the upper half of D_{2k+1} playing the role of A_{2k}.

Normal forms of $\mathbb Z$-graded $Q$-manifolds

Following recent results of A.K. and V.S. on $\mathbb Z$-graded manifolds, we give several local and global normal forms results for $Q$-structures on those, i.e. for differential graded manifolds. In particular, we explain in which sense their relevant structures are concentrated along the zero-locus of their curvatures, especially when the negative part is of Koszul--Tate type. We also give a local splitting theorem.

Modular class of Lie $\infty$-algebroids and adjoint representation

We study the modular class of $Q$-manifolds, and in particular of negatively graded Lie $\infty$-algebroid. We show the equivalence of several descriptions of those classes, that it matches the classes introduced by various authors and that the notion is homotopy invariant. In the process, the adjoint and coadjoint actions up to homotopy of a Lie $\infty$-algebroid are spelled out. We also wrote down explicitly some dualities, e.g. between representations up to homotopies of Lie $\infty$-algebroids and their $Q$-manifold equivalent, which we hope to be of use for future reference.

The holonomy of a singular leaf

We introduce the holonomy of a singular leaf $L$ of a singular foliation as a sequence of group morphisms from $π_n(L)$ to the $π_{n-1}$ of the universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of the transverse foliation of $L$. We include these morphisms in a long exact sequence, thus relating them to the holonomy groupoid of Androulidakis and Skandalis and to a similar construction by Brahic and Zhu for Lie algebroids.

Lie-Rinehart algebra $\simeq$ acyclic Lie $\infty$-algebroid

We show that there is an equivalence of categories between Lie-Rinehart algebras over a commutative algebra $\mathcal O $ and homotopy equivalence classes of negatively graded Lie $\infty $-algebroids over their resolutions (=acyclic Lie $\infty$-algebroids). This extends to a purely algebraic setting the construction of the universal $Q$-manifold of a locally real analytic singular foliation of Lavau-C.L.-Strobl. In particular, it makes sense for the universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of every singular foliation, without any additional assumption, and for Androulidakis-Zambon singular Lie algebroids. Also, to any ideal $\mathcal I \subset \mathcal O $ preserved by the anchor map of a Lie-Rinehart algebra $\mathcal A $, we associate a homotopy equivalence class of negatively graded Lie $\infty $-algebroids over a complex computing ${\mathrm{Tor}}_{\mathcal O}(\mathcal A, \mathcal O/\mathcal I) $. Several explicit examples are given.

Poincaré--Birkhoff--Witt isomorphisms and Kapranov dg-manifolds

We prove that to every inclusion $A\hookrightarrow L$ of Lie algebroids over the same base manifold $M$ corresponds a Kapranov dg-manifold structure on $A[1]\oplus L/A$, which is canonical up to isomorphism. As a consequence, $Γ(Λ^\bullet A^\vee\otimes L/A)$ carries a canonical $L_\infty[1]$ algebra structure whose unary bracket is the Chevalley--Eilenberg differential corresponding to the Bott representation of $A$ on $L/A$ and whose binary bracket is a cocycle representative of the Atiyah class of the Lie pair $(L,A)$. To this end, we construct explicit isomorphisms of $C^\infty(M)$-coalgebras $Γ\big(S(L/A)\big)\xrightarrow{\sim}\frac{\mathcal{U}(L)}{\mathcal{U}(L)Γ(A)}$, which we elect to call Poincaré--Birkhoff--Witt maps. These maps admit a recursive characterization that allows for explicit computations. They generalize both the classical symmetrization map $S(\mathfrak{g})\to\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{g})$ of Lie theory and (the inverse of) the complete symbol map for differential operators. Finally, we prove that the Kapranov dg-manifold $A[1]\oplus L/A$ is linearizable if and only if the Atiyah class of the Lie pair $(L,A)$ vanishes.

Shifted Poisson structures on differentiable stacks

The purpose of this paper is to investigate shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures in context of differential geometry. The relevant notion is shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures on differentiable stacks. More precisely, we develop the notion of Morita equivalence of quasi-Poisson groupoids. Thus isomorphism classes of $(+1)$ Poisson stack correspond to Morita equivalence classes of quasi-Poisson groupoids. In the process, we carry out the following programs of independent interests: (1) We introduce a $\mathbb Z$-graded Lie 2-algebra of polyvector fields on a given Lie groupoid and prove that its homotopy equivalence class is invariant under Morita equivalence of Lie groupoids, thus can be considered as polyvector fields on the corresponding differentiable stack ${\mathfrak X}$. It turns out that shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures on ${\mathfrak X}$ correspond exactly to elements of the Maurer-Cartan moduli set of the corresponding dgla. (2) We introduce the notion of tangent complex $T_{\mathfrak X}$ and cotangent complex $L_{\mathfrak X}$ of a differentiable stack ${\mathfrak X}$ in terms of any Lie groupoid $Γ{\rightrightarrows} M$ representing ${\mathfrak X}$. They correspond to homotopy class of 2-term homotopy $Γ$-modules $A[1]\rightarrow TM$ and $T^\vee M\rightarrow A^\vee[-1]$, respectively. We prove that a $(+1)$-shifted Poisson structure on a differentiable stack ${\mathfrak X}$, defines a morphism ${L_{\mathfrak X}}[1]\to {T_{\mathfrak X}}$.

The neighbourhood of a singular leaf

An important result for regular foliations is their formal semi-local triviality near simply connected leaves. We extend this result to singular foliations for all 2-connected leaves and a wide class of 1- connected leaves by proving a semi-local Levi-Malcev theorem for the semi-simple part of their holonomy Lie algebroid.

The universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of a singular foliation

We associate a Lie $\infty$-algebroid to every resolution of a singular foliation, where we consider a singular foliation as a locally generated $\mathscr{O}$-submodule of vector fields on the underlying manifold closed under Lie bracket. Here $\mathscr{O}$ can be the ring of smooth, holomorphic, or real analytic functions. The choices entering the construction of this Lie $\infty$-algebroid, including the chosen underlying resolution, are unique up to homotopy and, moreover, every other Lie $\infty$-algebroid inducing the same foliation or any of its sub-foliations factorizes through it in an up-to-homotopy unique manner. We thus call it the universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of the singular foliation. For real analytic or holomorphic singular foliations, it can be chosen, locally, to be a Lie $n$-algebroid for some finite $n$. We show that this universal structure encodes several aspects of the geometry of the leaves of a singular foliation. In particular, it contains the holonomy algebroid and groupoid of a leaf in the sense of Androulidakis and Skandalis. But even more, each leaf carries an isotropy $L_\infty$-algebra structure that is unique up to isomorphism. It extends a minimal isotropy Lie algebra, that can be associated to each leaf, by higher brackets, which give rise to additional invariants of the foliation. As a byproduct, we construct an example of a foliation generated by $r$ vector fields for which we show by these techniques that it cannot be generated by the image through the anchor map of a Lie algebroid of the minimal rank $r$.

Invariant connections and PBW theorem for Lie groupoid pairs

To a closed wide Lie subgroupoid $\mathbf{A}$ of a Lie groupoid $\mathbf{L}$, i.e. a Lie groupoid pair, we associate an Atiyah class which we interpret as the obstruction to the existence of $\mathbf{L}$-invariant fibrewise affine connections on the homogeneous space $\mathbf{L}/\mathbf{A}$. For Lie groupoid pairs with vanishing Atiyah class, we show that the left $\mathbf{A}$-action on the quotient space $\mathbf{L}/\mathbf{A}$ can be linearized. In addition to giving an alternative proof of a result of Calaque about the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt map for Lie algebroid pairs with vanishing Atiyah class, this result specializes to a necessary and sufficient condition for the linearization of dressing actions, and gives a clear interpretation of the Molino class as an obstruction to the simultaneous linearization of all the monodromies. In the course of the paper, a general theory of connections on Lie groupoid equivariant principal bundles is developed.

Infinis morphismes de Leibniz pour les crochets dérivés

The derived bracket of a Maurer-Cartan element in a differential graded Lie algebra (DGLA) is well-known to define a differential graded Leibniz algebra. It is also well-known that a Lie infinity morphism between DGLAs maps a Maurer-Cartan element to a Maurer-Cartan element. Given a Lie-infinity morphism, a Maurer-element and its image, we show that both derived differential graded Leibniz algebras are related by a Leibniz-infinity morphism, and we construct it explicitely. As an application, we recover a well-known formula of Dominique Manchon about the commutator of the star-product. Keywords: Leibniz algebras, Lie-infinity algebras, formality and quantization.
