Double quarkonium production in hadronic collisions at fixed-target experiments

We present new results for double quarkonium production in (un)polarized hadronic collisions at fixed-target experiments. Our approach incorporates the transverse momentum dependent factorization in combination with the Color-Singlet Model. We present new analytical expressions for the angular structure of the cross section for the $q\bar q$-induced channel, and provide predictions for the unpolarized cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetries for present and future fixed-target experiments at CERN and the LHC.

Collins effect in pion-in-jet production in polarized $pp$ and $ep$ collisions

We study Collins azimuthal asymmetries for pion-in-jet production in polarized proton-proton and lepton-proton collisions. We adopt a hybrid transverse momentum dependent approach, with a collinear configuration for the initial state, and employ the transversity and Collins fragmentation functions extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. After recalling the good description of the STAR data in $pp$ collisions, which supports the universality of the Collins function, we present predictions for Electron-Ion Collider kinematics, both at leading order and by including the quasireal photon exchange in the Weizs\"acker-Williams approximation. This contribution is sizable but does not spoil the dominance of quark-initiated channels. This implies that $\ell p$ processes allow for a clearer access to the transversity distribution, including its sea-quark component.

Collins asymmetries for pion-in-jet production in polarized $\ell p$ collisions at the EIC

We study Collins azimuthal asymmetries for pion-in-jet production in polarized lepton-proton collisions, extending previous analyses of polarized $pp$ scattering to a complementary and theoretically simpler process. We keep adopting a simplified transverse momentum dependent (TMD) approach, with a collinear configuration for the initial state, and employ the transversity and Collins fragmentation functions as extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and $e^+ e^-$ annihilation processes. We then compute azimuthal asymmetries for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) kinematics, both within a leading order (LO) approach and by including quasireal photon exchange in the Weizs\"acker-Williams approximation. Although this contribution is relevant in the whole kinematical range explored, it does not spoil the dominance of quark-initiated channels, leaving only a marginal role to their gluon counterparts. In this respect, Collins asymmetries in lepton-proton processes allow for a much clearer access to the transversity distribution, including its sea-quark component. As we will argue, a comparison with future EIC data could represent a further step in testing the hypothesis of the universality of the Collins function as well as of the TMD factorization for this class of processes.

Quark polarization and transverse momentum effects on double quarkonium production in hadronic collisions

We investigate the inclusive production of double quarkonia ($J/\psi$, $\psi(2S)$, $\Upsilon$ mesons) in polarized hadron-hadron collisions, considering the kinematic configuration where the transverse momentum of each pair of bound states is much smaller than its invariant mass. Supported by nonrelativistic QCD arguments, we adopt the Color-Singlet Model for the quarkonium formation mechanism and assume the validity of transverse momentum dependent factorization. In strong analogy with dilepton production in the Drell-Yan processes, the azimuthal modulations of the cross section, calculated to the order $\alpha_s^4$ in the QCD coupling constant, can be expressed as convolutions of transverse momentum dependent distributions of light quarks and antiquarks inside the incoming hadrons. By adopting very recent parameterizations of these distributions, we show that a phenomenological study of these quantities in $\pi^-p\to J/\psi\,J/\psi\,X $ in the kinematic region covered by the COMPASS and AMBER fixed-target experiments at CERN, where the gluon contribution is found to be negligible, would provide direct access to the quark distributions. In particular, this will offer the possibility of a further sign change test of the quark Sivers function of the proton. The impact of our findings on similar studies about the gluon content of the proton in present and future fixed-target experiments at the LHC, like SMOG and LHCspin, is also demonstrated.

Collins function for pion-in-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions: a test of universality and factorization

We present an updated study of the Collins azimuthal asymmetries for pion-in-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions. To this aim, we employ a recent extraction of the transversity and Collins fragmentation functions from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into hadron pairs processes, obtained within a simplified transverse momentum dependent (TMD) approach at leading order in the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$. In the present case we adopt a collinear configuration for the initial state, keeping transverse momentum effects only in the fragmentation mechanism. Our theoretical estimates, when compared against 200~GeV and 510~GeV data from the STAR Collaboration, show a generally good agreement for the distributions in the transverse momentum of the jet, the pion longitudinal momentum fraction and its transverse momentum with respect to the jet direction. While not being a proof, due the assumptions and limitations behind the entire approach, these findings corroborate the hypothesis of TMD factorization for such processes as well as of the universality of the Collins function and, once again, of a reduced impact of the proper TMD evolution on azimuthal asymmetries. We will also present predictions based on an extraction of the Collins and transversity distributions where information from data on single spin asymmetry for inclusive pion production in $p^\uparrow p$ collisions is included through a Bayesian reweighting procedure.

The impact of future $D$- and $B$-meson measurements with the SMOG2 program at LHCb on the determination of nuclear parton distribution functions

We perform an analysis of the potential impact of future $D$- and $B$-meson measurement within the SMOG2 fixed-target program at the LHCb experiment on nuclear parton distribution functions. Following~\cite{Bursche:2018orf}, we assume that SMOG2 will collect data for five nuclear targets: He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe and hydrogen which will provide a baseline for constructing nuclear ratios. The analysis is performed by using the PDF reweighting method. We demonstrate that such a measurement will allow to considerably reduce the current uncertainties of the nuclear gluon distribution and, to some extent, even the uncertainties of the light sea-quark distributions. Furthermore, it will provide the first possibility to systematically study the current assumptions on the $A$-dependence of the nuclear parton distributions.

Automated NLO calculations for asymmetric hadron-hadron collisions in MadGraph5_aMC@NLO

We have extended {\tt MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO} capabilities by implementing computations for asymmetric hadron-hadron collisions, including proton-nucleus, pion-hadron or nucleus-nucleus collisions in order to obtain a tool for automated perturbative computations of cross sections (or ratios of cross sections) in asymmetric reactions at next-to-leading (NLO) order in $\alpha_S$ in collinear factorisation. This tool, like the original symmetric version of \texttt{MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO}, automatically computes cross sections for different factorisation and renormalisation scales and PDFs provided by the {\tt LHAPDF} library, thereby allowing for an easy assessment of the associated theoretical uncertainties. In this paper, we present the validation of our code using $W$ and $Z$ boson production in $p$Pb collisions and Drell-Yan-pair production in $\pi W$ collisions. We also illustrate the capabilities of the framework by providing cross section and nuclear modification factors with their uncertainties for the production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons, charm and bottom quarks as well as associated production of $b\bar b+H^0$ in $p$Pb collisions at the LHC.

Resolved photoproduction in {\tt MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO}

The upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), with its high luminosity, will offer an unprecedented opportunity to explore the internal structure of atomic nucleus over an extended energy range from $\sqrt{s_{ep}} =$ 45 GeV to $\sqrt{s_{ep}} =$ 140 GeV. A particularly promising aspect of this collider is the study of the partonic structure with quasi-real photons which can also be studied in inclusive ultra-peripheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this work, we present our validation of resolved photoproduction at fixed order for (next-to-)leading order using \texttt{MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO}, a widely adopted framework at the LHC.

Updates on transversity extractions

We give a brief overview on some of the latest results on the transversity function. We focus on some recent extractions from azimuthal asymmetries data measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering processes, and on the impact of transverse single-spin asymmetry data measured in polarised proton-proton collisions on these extractions.

Simultaneous reweighting of Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is extended to the case of multiple independent extractions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). By exploiting the data on transverse single spin asymmetries, $A_N$, for inclusive pion production in polarized proton-proton collisions measured at RHIC, we perform a simultaneous reweighting of the quark Sivers, transversity and Collins TMD functions extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into hadron pairs. The impact of the implementation of the Soffer bound, as well as the differences between older and newer $A_N$ data, are investigated. The agreement with $A_N$ data at large-$x_F$ values, a kinematical region complementary to those explored in SIDIS measurements, is enhanced, improving the knowledge of the polarized quark TMDs in the large-$x$ region.

Asymmetric collisions in MadGraph5_aMC@NLO

We will gain unprecedented, high-accuracy insights into the internal structure of the atomic nucleus thanks to lepton-hadron collision studies in the coming years at the Electron-Ion-Collider (EIC) in the United States. A good control of radiative corrections is necessary for the EIC to be fully exploited and to extract valuable information from various measurements. We present our extension of photoproduction at fixed order in MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, a widely used framework for (next-to-)leading order calculations at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It applies to electron-hadron collisions, in which the quasi-real photon comes from an electron as well as to proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions.

NLOAccess: automated online computations for collider physics

We present NLOAccess, an online platform acting as a virtual access to automated perturbative computations of physical observables related to collider physics within collinear factorisation. We discuss the design of the project and illustrate how, with few steps and without any need of pre-code or code compilation, a user can generate events and calculate cross sections related for instance to quarkonium production and/or heavy-ion collisions at leading and next-to-leading order in $\alpha_s$ using MadGraph5_aMC@NLO or HELAC-Onia. Finally, we report about the obtained results in terms of number of users and runs, and we illustrate the future plans of the project.

Revisiting NLO QCD corrections to total inclusive J/psi and Upsilon photoproduction cross sections in lepton-proton collisions

We revisit inclusive J/psi and Upsilon photoproduction at lepton-hadron colliders, namely in the limit when the exchanged photon is quasi real. Our computation includes the next-to-leading-order (NLO) alpha_s corrections to the leading-order contributions in v. Similarly to the case of NLO charmonium-hadroproduction processes, the resulting cross sections obtained in the MS-bar factorisation scheme are sometimes found to be negative. We show that the scale-fixing criteria which we derived in a previous study of eta(c) production successfully solves this problem from the EicC all the way up to the FCC-eh energies. We then elaborate on how to study a scale uncertainty akin to that derived by scale variations when one fixes a scale. In turn, we investigate where both J/psi and Upsilon photoproduction could be used to improve our knowledge of gluon content of the proton at scales as low as a couple of GeV.

Prospects for quarkonium studies at the high-luminosity LHC

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings.

NLO inclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction at large $P_T$ at HERA and the EIC

We study inclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction at NLO at large $P_T$ at HERA and the EIC. Our computation includes NLO QCD leading-$P_T$ corrections, QED contributions via an off-shell photon as well as those from $J/ψ$+charm channels. For the latter, we employ the variable-flavour-number scheme. Our results are found to agree with the latest HERA data by H1 and provide, for the first time, a reliable estimate of the EIC reach for such a measurement. Finally, we demonstrate the observability of $J/ψ$+charm production and the sensitivy to probe the non-perturbative charm content of the proton at high $x$, also known as intrinsic charm, at the EIC.

Reweighting the quark Sivers function with STAR jet data

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is applied for the first time to a TMD distribution, the quark Sivers function extracted from SIDIS data. By exploiting the recent published single spin asymmetry data for the inclusive jet production in $p^\uparrow p$ collisions from the STAR collaboration at RHIC, we show how such a procedure allows to incorporate the information contained in the new data set, without the need of re-fitting, and to explore a much wider $x$ region compared to SIDIS measurements. The reweighting method is also extended to the case of asymmetric errors, and the results show a significant improvement on the knowledge of the quark Sivers function.

Reweighting the Sivers function with jet data from STAR

The reweighting procedure that using Bayesian statistics incorporates the information contained in a new data set, without the need of re-fitting, is applied to the quark Sivers function extracted from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) data. We exploit the recently published single spin asymmetry data for the inclusive jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions from the STAR Collaboration at RHIC, which cover a much wider $x$ region compared to SIDIS measurements. The reweighting method is extended to the case of asymmetric errors and the results show a remarkable improvement of the knowledge of the quark Sivers function.
