Large-P_T inclusive photoproduction of J/psi in electron-proton collisions at HERA and the EIC

We study the inclusive J/psi production at large transverse momenta at lepton-hadron colliders in the limit when the exchange photon is quasi real, also referred to as photoproduction. Our computation includes the leading-P_T leading-v next-to-leading alpha_s corrections. In particular, we consider the contribution from J/psi plus another charm quark, by employing for the first time in quarkonium photoproduction the variable-flavour-number scheme. We also include a QED-induced contribution via an off-shell photon which remained ignored in the literature and which we show to be the leading contribution at high P_T within the reach of the EIC. In turn, we use our computation of J/psi+charm to demonstrate its observability at the future EIC and the EIC sensitivity to probe the non-perturbative charm content of the proton at high x.

Role of the Soffer bound in determination of transversity and the tensor charge

The transversity and the tensor charge of the nucleon, currently under active investigation experimentally and theoretically, are fundamental quantities in hadron physics as well as for our comprehension of the nucleon structure. Some tension between the values of the tensor charge, as computed on the basis of phenomenological extractions and lattice QCD calculations, has been observed. In this letter, by means of an explicit example, we study the role of assumptions, usually adopted in phenomenological parametrizations, and we show that, by relaxing some of them, such a tension could be eased.

The gluon Sivers function and its process dependence from RHIC data

We present a phenomenological analysis of available data on single spin asymmetries for pion and $D$ meson production in proton-proton collisions at RHIC within the color gauge invariant generalized parton model (CGI-GPM), which includes initial (ISIs) and final (FSIs) state interactions in a transverse momentum dependent formalism. This study allows us, for the first time, to put preliminary constraints on the two independent gluon Sivers functions entering the model. We also present a comparison with the simpler generalized parton model (without ISIs and FSIs).

Process dependence of the gluon Sivers function in inclusive $pp$ collisions: theory

Within the color gauge invariant generalized parton model (CGI-GPM), which includes initial and final state interactions in a transverse momentum dependent formalism, we present the complete results, at leading order in perturbative QCD, for transverse single-spin asymmetries in the inclusive hadroproduction of $J/ψ$ and $D$ mesons, pions and direct photons.

Unraveling the Gluon Sivers Function in Hadronic Collisions at RHIC

We study the transverse single-spin asymmetries for $p^\uparrow p\to π\, X$ and $p^\uparrow p\to γ\, X$ within the so-called color gauge invariant generalized parton model (CGI-GPM) which, in addition to spin and transverse momentum effects, includes initial and final state interactions with the polarized proton remnants. We compute all relevant contributions, focusing in particular on the process dependence of the gluon Sivers function, which, for these processes, can always be expressed as a linear combination of two independent, universal terms. This study extends and completes a previous one, where only quark initiated partonic processes were considered. We then perform a combined phenomenological analysis of RHIC data on transverse single-spin asymmetries in $p^\uparrow p\to π\, X$ and $p^\uparrow p\to D\, X$, putting the first preliminary constraints on these two gluon Sivers functions. We show how their size can be estimated by means of these data, and use our results to provide predictions for the process $p^\uparrow p\to J/ψ\,X$, comparing them with data, and $p^\uparrow p\to γ\, X$, for which experimental information will soon become available. Corresponding estimates within the simpler GPM approach, without initial and final state interactions and with a single universal gluon Sivers function, are also given, showing that a clear discrimination between these two models is, for the moment, not possible.

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in $\ell \,p^\uparrow \to h \,X$ within a TMD approach: Role of quasireal photon exchange

We present an updated study of transverse single-spin asymmetries for the inclusive large-$P_T$ processes $\ell \, p^\uparrow \to h\, X$ and $\ell\, p^\uparrow \to {\rm jet}\,X$, within a transverse momentum-dependent approach, including the contribution of quasireal (Weizsäcker-Williams) photons. In the spirit of a unified transverse momentum-dependent scheme, predictions are obtained adopting the Sivers and transversity distributions and the Collins fragmentation functions as extracted from fits to the azimuthal asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and $e^+e^-$ annihilation processes. The description of the available data is extremely good, showing a clear general improvement with respect to the previous leading-order analysis. Predictions for unpolarized cross sections and single-spin asymmetries for ongoing and future experiments are also given.

Quasi-real photon contribution to $A_N$ in $\ell p^\uparrow \to π\,$ X within a TMD approach

Within a TMD approach we discuss the impact of quasi-real (Weizsäcker-Williams) photon contribution to the transverse single-spin asymmetry, $A_N$, for the inclusive process $\ell p^\uparrow \to π\, X$. This study extends a previous one where only the leading-order contribution was taken into account. Predictions are obtained adopting the Sivers and transversity distributions and the Collins fragmentation functions as extracted from fits to the azimuthal asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and $e^+e^-$ annihilation processes. The description of the available data is very good, showing a clear general improvement with respect to the previous analysis (already quite promising). This result represents a further step towards a unified TMD treatment of SSAs in $\ell\,p^\uparrow \to\ell'\, h\, X$ and $\ell \,p^\uparrow \to h\, X$ processes.
