Towards the inclusion of NLO EW corrections in the MiNLO method in Drell-Yan processes

In this paper we present the first application of the MiNLO method to the calculation of QED NLO corrections to the production of a neutral vector boson in Drell-Yan processes. We consider only the case of initial-state radiation, when the Z boson decays into neutrinos. We illustrate the abelianization procedure of the MiNLO formulae and discuss the impact that it has on the differential cross section. We then propose a variant of the MiNLO formulae in order to circumvent some of the problems that arise when dealing with QED emissions. Since this is a case study, we use ad-hoc parton distribution functions and a larger value of the electromagnetic coupling constant, in order to emphasize potential discrepancies with respect to the expected behavior of the MiNLO formulae. We quantify the uncertainties connected with the proposed method, also for a the physical value of the electromagnetic coupling. The study presented here is a necessary first step towards incorporating full electroweak effects into the MiNNLOPS framework.

NLO + parton-shower generator for Wc production in the POWHEG BOX RES

We present the implementation of a next-to-leading-order plus parton-shower event generator for the hadronic production of a heavy charm quark accompanied by a leptonically-decaying $W$ boson in the POWHEG BOX RES framework. We consider both signatures, i.e. $pp\to c\, \ell^- \barν_{\ell}$ and $pp\to \bar{c} \,\ell^+ ν_{\ell}$, and we include exactly off-shell and spin-correlation effects, as well as off-diagonal Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa contributions. We present particle-level results, obtained interfacing our code with the Herwig7.2 and Pythia8.3 shower Monte Carlo event generators, including hadronization and underlying-event effects, and compare them against the data collected by the CMS Collaboration at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV.

NNLO+PS Monte Carlo simulation of photon pair production with MiNNLOPS

We present a NNLO QCD accurate event generator for direct photon pair production at hadron colliders, based on the MiNNLOPS formalism, within the POWHEG BOX RES framework. Despite the presence of the photons requires the use of isolation criteria, our generator is built such that no technical cuts are needed at any stage of the event generation. Therefore, our predictions can be used to simulate kinematic distributions with arbitrary fiducial cuts. Furthermore, we describe a few modifications of the MiNNLOPS formalism in order to allow for a setting of the renormalization and factorization scales more similar to that of a fixed-order computation, thus reducing the numerical impact of higher-order terms beyond the nominal accuracy. Finally, we show several phenomenological distributions of physical interest obtained by showering the generated events with Pythia8, and we compare them with the 13 TeV data from the ATLAS Collaboration.

Power corrections in a transverse-momentum cut for vector-boson production at NNLO: the $qg$-initiated real-virtual contribution

We consider the production of a vector boson ($Z$, $W^\pm$ or $γ^*$) at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant $α_{\rm S}$. We impose a transverse-momentum cutoff, $q_{\rm T}^{\rm cut}$, on the vector boson produced in the $qg$-initiated channel. We then compute the power corrections in the cutoff, up to the second power, of the real-virtual interference contribution to the cumulative cross section at order $α_{\rm S}^2$. Other terms with the same kinematics, originating from the subtraction method applied to the double-real contribution, have been also considered. The knowledge of such power corrections is a required ingredient in order to reduce the dependence on the transverse-momentum cutoff of the QCD cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order, when the $q_{\rm T}$-subtraction method is applied. In addition, the study of the dependence of the cross section on $q_{\rm T}^{\rm cut}$ allows as well for an understanding of its behaviour in the small transverse-momentum limit, giving hints on the structure at all orders in $α_{\rm S}$ and on the identification of universal patterns. Our result are presented in an analytic form, using the process-independent procedure described in a previous paper for the calculation of the all-order power corrections in $q_{\rm T}^{\rm cut}$.

NLO QCD+NLO EW corrections to diboson production matched to parton shower

We present the matching of NLO QCD and NLO EW corrections to parton showers for vector-boson pair production at the LHC. We consider leptonic final states, including resonant and non-resonant diagrams, spin correlations and off-shell effects. Our results are obtained interfacing the Recola2-Collier one-loop provider with the POWHEG-BOX-RES framework. We discuss our implementation, we validate it at fixed order, and we show our final results matched to parton shower. A by-product of our work is also a general interface between Recola2-Collier and POWHEG-BOX-RES. This is the first time that EW and QCD corrections to diboson production are consistently matched to parton showers.

An interface between the POWHEG BOX and MadGraph5_aMC@NLO

In this paper we present a framework for developing POWHEG BOX generators using MadGraph5_aMC@NLO for the computation of the matrix elements. Within this framework, all the flexibility of MadGraph5_aMC@NLO for the generation of matrix elements for Standard Model processes and for several of its extensions can be exploited, as well as all features of the POWHEG BOX framework, including the possibility of multijet merging without a merging scale (using the so called MiNLO approach). As a proof of concept, we develop a generator for the production of a spin-0 Higgs-like boson in association with up to two jets, with CP-violating couplings.

Higher-order power corrections in a transverse-momentum cut for colour-singlet production at NLO

We consider the production of a colourless system at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant $α_s$. We impose a transverse-momentum cutoff, qtcut, on the colourless final state and we compute the power corrections for the inclusive cross section in the cutoff, up to the fourth power. The study of the dependence of the cross section on qtcut allows for an understanding of its behaviour at the boundaries of the phase space, giving hints on the structure at all orders in $α_s$ and on the identification of universal patterns. The knowledge of such power corrections is also a required ingredient in order to reduce the dependence on the transverse-momentum cutoff of the QCD cross sections at higher orders, when the qt-subtraction method is applied. We present analytic results for both Drell--Yan vector boson and Higgs boson production in gluon fusion and we illustrate a process-independent procedure for the calculation of the all-order power corrections in the cutoff. In order to show the impact of the power-correction terms, we present selected numerical results and discuss how the residual dependence on qtcut affects the total cross section for Drell--Yan Z production and Higgs boson production via gluon fusion at the LHC.

Addendum to: A Theoretical Study of Top-Mass Measurements at the LHC Using NLO+PS Generators of Increasing Accuracy

This paper is a follow-up of Ref.~\cite{Ravasio:2018lzi}, where we studied the impact of next-to-leading order calculations merged with parton shower generators (NLO+PS) of increasing accuracy in the extraction of the top mass at hadron colliders. Here we examined results obtained with the older (fortran-based) shower generators Pythia6.4 and Herwig6.5. Our findings are in line with what we found in our previous paper with the new, c++-based, generators Pythia8.2 and Herwig7.1.

Monte Carlo event generators for high energy particle physics event simulation

Monte Carlo event generators (MCEGs) are the indispensable workhorses of particle physics, bridging the gap between theoretical ideas and first-principles calculations on the one hand, and the complex detector signatures and data of the experimental community on the other hand. All collider physics experiments are dependent on simulated events by MCEG codes such as Herwig, Pythia, Sherpa, POWHEG, and MG5_aMC@NLO to design and tune their detectors and analysis strategies. The development of MCEGs is overwhelmingly driven by a vibrant community of academics at European Universities, who also train the next generations of particle phenomenologists. The new challenges posed by possible future collider-based experiments and the fact that the first analyses at Run II of the LHC are now frequently limited by theory uncertainties urge the community to invest into further theoretical and technical improvements of these essential tools. In this short contribution to the European Strategy Update, we briefly review the state of the art, and the further developments that will be needed to meet the challenges of the next generation.

All-orders behaviour and renormalons in top-mass observables

We study a simplified model of top production and decay, consisting in a virtual vector boson $W^*$ decaying into a massive-massless $t$-$\bar{b}$ quark-antiquark pair. The top has a finite width and further decays into a stable vector boson $W$ and a $b$ quark. We then consider the emission or the virtual exchange of one gluon, with all possible light-quark loop insertions. These are the dominant diagrams in the limit of an infinite number of light flavours. We devise a procedure to compute this process fully, by analytic and numerical methods, and for any infrared-safe final-state observables. We examine the results at arbitrary orders in perturbation theory, and assess the factorial growth associated with renormalons. We look for renormalon effects leading to corrections of order $Λ_{\rm QCD}$, that we dub `linear' renormalons, in the inclusive cross section (with and without selection cuts), in the mass of the reconstructed-top system, and in the average energy of the final-state $W$ boson, considering both the pole and the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme for the top mass. We find that the total cross section without cuts, if expressed in terms of the $\overline{\rm MS}$ mass, does not exhibit linear renormalons, but, as soon as selection cuts are introduced, jets-related linear renormalons arise in any mass scheme. In addition, we show that the reconstructed mass is affected by linear renormalons in any scheme and that the average energy of the $W$ boson (that we consider as a simplified example of leptonic observable), in any mass scheme, has a renormalon in the narrow-width limit, that is however screened at large orders for finite top widths, provided the top mass is in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme.

A theoretical study of top-mass measurements at the LHC using NLO+PS generators of increasing accuracy

In this paper we study the theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the top-quark mass using next-to-leading-order (NLO) generators interfaced to parton showers (PS) that have different levels of accuracy. Specifically we consider three generators: one that implements NLO corrections in the production dynamics, one that includes also NLO corrections in top decay in the narrow width approximation, and one that implements NLO corrections for both production and decay including finite-width and interference effects. Since our aim is to provide an assessment of the uncertainties of purely theoretical origin, we consider simplified top-mass related observables that are broadly related to those effectively used by experiments, eventually modelling experimental resolution effects with simple smearing procedures. We estimate the differences in the value of the extracted top mass that would occur due to the use of the three different NLO generators, to the variation of scales, to the choice of parton distribution functions and to the matching procedure. Furthermore, we also consider differences due to the shower and to the modelling of non-perturbative effects by interfacing our NLO generators to both Pythia8.2 and Herwig7.1, with various settings. We find very different results depending upon the adopted shower model. While with Pythia8.2 we find moderate differences between the different NLO+PS generators, with Herwig7.1 we find very large ones. Furthermore, the differences between Pythia8.2 and Herwig7.1 generators are also remarkably large.

NLO QCD+EW predictions for HV and HV+jet production including parton-shower effects

We present the first NLO QCD+EW predictions for Higgs boson production in association with a l nu or l+ l- pair plus zero or one jets at the LHC. Fixed-order NLO QCD+EW calculations are combined with a QCD+QED parton shower using the recently developed resonance-aware method in the POWHEG framework. Moreover, applying the improved MINLO technique to H l nu and H l+ l- production at NLO QCD+EW, we obtain predictions that are NLO accurate for observables with both zero or one resolved jet. This approach permits also to capture higher-order effects associated with the interplay of EW corrections and QCD radiation. The behavior of EW corrections is studied for various kinematic distributions, relevant for experimental analyses of Higgsstrahlung processes at the 13 TeV LHC. Exact NLO EW corrections are complemented with approximate analytic formulae that account for the leading and next-to-leading Sudakov logarithms in the high-energy regime. In the tails of transverse-momentum distributions, relevant for analyses in the boosted Higgs regime, the Sudakov approximation works well, and NLO EW effects can largely exceed the ten percent level. Our predictions are based on the POWHEX BOX RES + OpenLoops framework in combination with the Pythia 8.1 parton shower.

An NLO+PS generator for $t\bar{t}$ and $Wt$ production and decay including non-resonant and interference effects

We present a Monte Carlo generator that implements significant theoretical improvements in the simulation of top-quark pair production and decay at the LHC. Spin correlations and off-shell effects in top-decay chains are described in terms of exact matrix elements for $p p \to \ell^+ν_{\scriptscriptstyle\ell}\, l^-\barν_{\scriptscriptstyle l} b \bar{b}$ at NLO QCD, where the leptons $\ell$ and $l$ belong to different families, and $b$ quarks are massive. Thus, the contributions from $t\bar{t}$ and $Wt$ single-top production as well as their quantum interference are fully included. Matrix elements are matched to the Pythia8 parton shower using a recently proposed method that allows for a consistent treatment of resonances in the POWHEG framework. These theoretical improvements are especially important for the interpretation of precision measurements of the top-quark mass, for single-top analyses in the $Wt$ channel, and for $t\bar{t}$ and $Wt$ backgrounds in the presence of jet vetoes or cuts that enhance off-shell effects. The new generator is based on a process-independent interface of the OpenLoops amplitude generator with the POWHEGBOX framework.

Wbbj production at NLO with POWHEG+MiNLO

We present a next-to-leading order plus parton-shower event generator for the production of a W boson plus two bottom quarks and a jet at hadron colliders, implemented in the POWHEG BOX framework. Bottom-mass effects and spin correlations of the decay products of the W boson are fully taken into account. The code has been automatically generated using the two available interfaces to MadGraph4 and GoSam, the last one updated to a new version. We have applied the MiNLO prescription to our Wbbj calculation, obtaining a finite differential cross section also in the limit of vanishing jet transverse momentum. Furthermore, we have compared several key distributions for Wbbj production with those generated with a next-to-leading order plus parton-shower event generator for Wbb production, and studied their factorization- and renormalization-scale dependence. Finally, we have compared our results with recent experimental data from the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations.

Three-jet production in POWHEG

We present an implementation of the production of three jets at NLO plus parton-shower effects in the POWHEG BOX. Using the recently introduced MiNLO procedure for setting the renormalization and factorization scales, we are able to obtain a generator that is also well behaved when the third jet becomes unresolved. We compare key distributions computed at the NLO level, at the level of the POWHEG hard emission and after full shower by PYTHIA, Pythia8 and HERWIG6. We also compare our three-jet generator with the already available dijet POWHEG generator.

HW/HZ + 0 and 1 jet at NLO with the POWHEG BOX interfaced to GoSam and their merging within MiNLO

We present a generator for the production of a Higgs boson H in association with a vector boson V=W or Z (including subsequent V decay) plus zero and one jet, that can be used in conjunction with general-purpose shower Monte Carlo generators, according to the POWHEG method, as implemented within the POWHEG BOX framework. We have computed the virtual corrections using GoSam, a program for the automatic construction of virtual amplitudes. In order to do so, we have built a general interface of the POWHEG BOX to the GoSam package. With this addition, the construction of a POWHEG generator within the POWHEG BOX is now fully automatized, except for the construction of the Born phase space. Our HV + 1 jet generators can be run with the recently proposed MiNLO method for the choice of scales and the inclusion of Sudakov form factors. Since the HV production is very similar to V production, we were able to apply an improved MiNLO procedure, that was recently used in H and V production, also in the present case. This procedure is such that the resulting generator achieves NLO accuracy not only for inclusive distributions in HV + 1 jet production but also in HV production, i.e. when the associated jet is not resolved, yielding a further example of matched calculation with no matching scale.

Generation cuts and Born suppression in POWHEG

In this short note we discuss the origin of spikes in physical distributions in dijet production, originating after the Monte Carlo shower of POWHEG Les Houches events. We introduce a refinement of the way in which the POWHEG BOX separates the singular regions that reduces the appearance of spikes in the computed distributions. We also study the sensitivity of the results due to a modification of the way the POWHEG events are passed to the shower Monte Carlo program. We recommend that the new features should be used always in dijet production.

Merging H/W/Z + 0 and 1 jet at NLO with no merging scale: a path to parton shower + NNLO matching

We consider the POWHEG generator for a H/W/Z boson plus one jet, augmented with the recently proposed MiNLO method for the choice of scales and the inclusion of Sudakov form factors. Within this framework, the generator covers all the transverse-momentum region of the H/W/Z boson, i.e. no generation cuts are needed to obtain a finite result. By construction, the generator achieves NLO accuracy for distributions involving a finite (and relatively large) transverse momentum of the boson. We examine the conditions under which also the totally inclusive distributions (e.g. the boson rapidity distribution) achieve NLO accuracy. We find that a minimal modification of the MiNLO prescription is sufficient to achieve such accuracy. We thus construct a NLO generator for H/W/Z boson plus one jet production such that it smoothly merges into a NLO single boson production in the small transverse-momentum region. We notice that, by simply reweighting the boson rapidity distribution to NNLO predictions, we achieve a NNLO accurate generator matched to a shower. The approach applies to all production processes involving a colorless massive system plus one jet. We discuss how it may be extended to general processes.
