Probing higher-order corrections in dijet production at the LHC

Both the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations have sought for effects beyond pure next-to-leading order in dijet observables, with the goal to distinguish between the perturbative descriptions provided by a next-to-leading order plus collinear-resummation calculation and by the resummation of wide-angle, hard emissions. In this paper we identify regions of phase space in dijet production where some observables receive large corrections beyond next-to-leading order and study their theoretical description with two tools that perform these two different resummations: the POWHEG BOX and HEJ. Furthermore, we suggest analyses where the predictions from POWHEG and HEJ can be clearly distinguished experimentally.

NLO Higgs boson production plus one and two jets using the POWHEG BOX, MadGraph4 and MCFM

We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production plus one and two jets via gluon fusion interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs, implemented according to the POWHEG method. For this implementation we have used a new interface of the POWHEG BOX with MadGraph4, that generates the codes for generic Born and real processes automatically. The virtual corrections have been taken from the MCFM code. We carry out a simple phenomenological study of our generators, comparing them among each other and with fixed next-to-leading order results.

W b bbar production in POWHEG

We present an implementation of the next-to-leading order hadronic production of a W boson in association with a pair of massive bottom quarks in the framework of POWHEG, a method to consistently interface NLO QCD calculations with shower Monte Carlo generators. The process has been implemented using the POWHEG BOX, an automated computer code that sistematically applies the POWHEG method to NLO QCD calculations. Spin correlations in the decay of the W boson into leptons have been taken into account using standard approximated techniques. We present phenomenological results for W b bbar-> l nu b bbar production, at both the Tevatron and the LHC, obtained by showering the POWHEG results with PYTHIA and HERWIG, and we discuss the outputs of the two different shower Monte Carlo programs.

Jet pair production in POWHEG

We present an implementation of the next-to-leading order dijet production process in hadronic collisions in the framework of POWHEG, which is a method to implement NLO calculations within a shower Monte Carlo context. In constructing the simulation, we have made use of the POWHEG BOX toolkit, which makes light of many of the most technical steps. The majority of this article is concerned with the study of the predictions of the Monte Carlo simulation. In so doing, we validate our program for use in experimental analyses, elaborating on some of the more subtle features which arise from the interplay of the NLO and resummed components of the calculation. We conclude our presentation by comparing predictions from the simulation against a number of Tevatron and LHC jet-production results.

Vector boson plus one jet production in POWHEG

We present an implementation of the next-to-leading order vector boson plus one jet production process in hadronic collision in the framework of POWHEG, which is a method to implement NLO calculations within a Shower Monte Carlo context. All spin correlations in the vector boson decay products have been taken into account. The process has been implemented in the framework of the POWHEG-BOX, an automated computer code for turning a NLO calculation into a shower Monte Carlo program. We present phenomenological results for the case of the Z/gamma plus one jet production process, obtained by matching the POWHEG calculation with the shower performed by PYTHIA, for the LHC, and we compare our results with available Tevatron data.

The POWHEG-BOX

We review the key features of POWHEG, a method for interfacing parton-shower Monte Carlo generators to fixed next-to-leading order QCD computations. We describe a recently introduced framework, the POWHEG-BOX, that allows the automatic POWHEG implementation of any given NLO calculation. We present a few results for Higgs boson production via vector boson fusion and Z + 1 jet production, both processes available in the POWHEG-BOX.

NLO Higgs boson production via gluon fusion matched with shower in POWHEG

We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production via gluon fusion interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs, implemented according to the POWHEG method. A detailed comparison with MC@NLO and PYTHIA is carried out for several observables, for the Tevatron and LHC colliders. Comparisons with next-to-next-to-leading order results and with resummed ones are also presented.

Vector Boson Pair Production via Vector Boson Fusion at NLO QCD

NLO QCD corrections to Vector Boson Pair Production via Vector Boson Fusion have recently been calculated and implemented in a parton-level Monte-Carlo program with full experimental cuts. We briefly sketch the elements of the calculation and show numerical results for the Large Hadron Collider.

Matching NLO QCD computations with Parton Shower simulations: the POWHEG method

The aim of this work is to describe in detail the POWHEG method, first suggested by one of the authors, for interfacing parton-shower generators with NLO QCD computations. We describe the method in its full generality, and then specify its features in two subtraction frameworks for NLO calculations: the Catani-Seymour and the Frixione-Kunszt-Signer approach. Two examples are discussed in detail in both approaches: the production of hadrons in e+e- collisions, and the Drell-Yan vector-boson production in hadronic collisions.

Power-suppressed effects in heavy quark fragmentation functions

This talk summarizes the results of a phenomenological analysis of heavy quark fragmentation data published by the CLEO and BELLE collaborations at \sqrt{s} = 10.6 GeV and by the LEP collaborations at \sqrt{s} = 91.2 GeV. Several theoretical ingredients are employed: next-to-leading order initial conditions, evolution and coefficient functions; soft-gluon resummation to next-to-leading-log accuracy; a next-to-leading order matching condition for the crossing of the bottom threshold in the evolution. Important initial-state electromagnetic radiation effects in the CLEO and BELLE data are also accounted for. We find that with reasonably simple choices of a non-perturbative correction to the fixed-order initial condition for the evolution, the data from CLEO and BELLE can be fitted with remarkable accuracy. The fitted fragmentation function, when evolved to LEP energies, does not however represent fairly the D* fragmentation spectrum measured by ALEPH. Large non-perturbative corrections to the coefficient functions of the meson spectrum are needed in order to reconcile CLEO/BELLE and ALEPH results.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to Z boson pair production via vector-boson fusion

Vector-boson fusion processes are an important tool for the study of electroweak symmetry breaking at hadron colliders, since they allow to distinguish a light Higgs boson scenario from strong weak boson scattering. We here consider the channels WW->ZZ and ZZ->ZZ as part of electroweak Z boson pair production in association with two tagging jets. We present the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the cross sections for p p -> e+ e- mu+ mu- + 2 jets and p p -> e+ e- nu_mu nubar_mu + 2 jets via vector-boson fusion at order alpha_s alpha^6, which is performed in the form a NLO parton-level Monte Carlo program. The corrections to the integrated cross sections are found to be modest, while the shapes of some kinematical distributions change appreciably at NLO. Residual scale uncertainties typically are at the few percent level.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to W+W- production via vector-boson fusion

Vector-boson fusion processes constitute an important class of reactions at hadron colliders, both for signals and backgrounds of new physics in the electroweak interactions. We consider what is commonly referred to as W+W- production via vector-boson fusion (with subsequent leptonic decay of the Ws), or, more precisely, e+ nu_e mu- nubar_mu + 2 jets production in proton-proton scattering, with all resonant and non-resonant Feynman diagrams and spin correlations of the final-state leptons included, in the phase-space regions which are dominated by t-channel electroweak-boson exchange. We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to this process, at order alpha^6 alpha_s. The QCD corrections are modest, changing total cross sections by less than 10%. Remaining scale uncertainties are below 2%. A fully-flexible next-to-leading order partonic Monte Carlo program allows to demonstrate these features for cross sections within typical vector-boson-fusion acceptance cuts. Modest corrections are also found for distributions.

A Study of Heavy Flavoured Meson Fragmentation Functions in e+ e- annihilation

We compare QCD theoretical predictions for heavy flavoured mesons fragmentation spectra in e+ e- annihilation with data from CLEO, BELLE and LEP. We include several effects in our calculation: next-to-leading order initial conditions, evolution and coefficient functions. Soft-gluon effects are resummed at next-to-leading-log accuracy. A matching condition for the crossing of the bottom threshold in evolution is also implemented at next-to-leading order accuracy. Important initial-state electromagnetic radiation effects in the CLEO and BELLE data are accounted for. We find that, with reasonably simple choices of a non-perturbative correction to the fixed-order initial condition for the evolution, the data from CLEO and BELLE can be fitted with remarkable accuracy. Non-perturbative parameters extracted from the fits to e+ e- fragmentation data for D/D* and B mesons are tabulated. They can be employed in the theoretical predictions for the production of charmed and bottomed mesons in hadron-hadron, photon-hadron and photon-photon collisions.

Crossing Heavy-Flavour Thresholds in Fragmentation Functions

In analogy with parton distribution functions, also parton fragmentation functions obey matching conditions when crossing heavy-flavour thresholds. We compute these matching conditions at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s in the MSbar scheme. Our results can be used for the dynamical generation of the heavy-flavour component in next-to-leading order fits to light-hadrons fragmentation functions. Furthermore, when computing perturbatively the charm fragmentation function from first principles and evolving it to higher scales, our matching conditions should be used for consistency when crossing the bottom threshold.
