Inverse reconstruction of dissipative Kerr soliton interactions

We reconstruct the pairwise interaction potential between dissipative Kerr solitons from the linear stability spectrum of a perfect soliton crystal solution of the Lugiato--Lefever equation. The solitons form an overdamped lattice whose positional eigenvalues encode the pairwise-force derivative, mirroring the extraction of microscopic interactions from phonon or relaxation spectra in condensed-matter systems. The method extends beyond quadratic dispersion and assumes no functional form for the interaction. Our theory predicts a novel state -the soft soliton crystal- which has vanishing stiffness and a diverging positional relaxation time, and also explains experimentally observed soliton steps as arising from a sign reversal of the pairwise-force derivative.

Soliton crystal formation in Kerr cavities with an avoided mode crossing: a theoretical study

We theoretically and numerically investigate the formation of soliton crystals in Kerr microresonators in the presence of an avoided mode crossing (AMX). Our study combines dynamical simulations based on a modified Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE) with a stability analysis of its stationary solutions. We show that, depending on its strength and spectral position, the AMX can either stabilize otherwise unstable soliton crystals or induce Turing patterns which subsequently seeds soliton crystal formation. Both perfect and imperfect soliton crystals can form below the pump threshold for spatiotemporal chaos, and we identify the conditions required for perfect crystals. Finally, we investigate modulation instability in the presence of an AMX, showing that it modifies the parametric gain and can suppress or promote Turing pattern formation depending on its spectral position.

Quantum cascade laser roadmap

Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are unipolar semiconductor lasers first demonstrated in 1994. Since then, they have played a central role in advancing mid-infrared and terahertz photonics, becoming among the most reliable light sources in these regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Their importance is further reinforced by their ability to generate self-starting optical frequency combs, whose investigation is motivated both by fundamental physics and by a wide range of applications, including molecular spectroscopy and free-space optical communications. This Roadmap provides a unified overview of current advances and emerging directions in QCL research. The chapters are organized into three main sections: device design and technology; frequency combs and pulse formation; and applications of QCLs. Each chapter reviews the relevant background, summarizes the current state of the art, and identifies key challenges and future directions within its specific research area.

Optical feedback induced irregular and chaotic dynamics in terahertz quantum cascade laser combs

In this work, we systematically investigate the optical feedback dynamics of terahertz (THz) frequency combs generated from quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) using the effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations (ESMBEs). Starting from a free-running comb state at low bias (1.3Ith), we identify clear bifurcation routes as the external feedback is increased. In the weak feedback regime (C<1), the frequency comb operation remains stable; as feedback increases to the moderate feedback regime (1 13.86), complex feedback dynamics re-emerged but with significantly reduced complexity compared with the weak feedback regime. More interestingly, we show that optical feedback can induce chaotic THz emission at higher bias current conditions (>1.6Ith), when the free-running laser output (C=0) is originally a stable frequency comb. The resulting chaotic dynamics, characterized by broadband spectra and large positive Lyapunov exponents, are shown to depend strongly on the linewidth enhancement factor. Although THz QCLs widely considered as ultrastable under external perturbations, this work provides the first detailed report of chaotic dynamics and routes to chaos in THz QCLs under optical feedback. These findings not only deepen the understanding of nonlinear dynamics in THz QCLs but also open new possibilities for exploiting applications of chaotic light in THz sensing, imaging and secure communications.

Effective Rabi frequency in semiconductor lasers and the origin of self-starting harmonic frequency combs

Optical frequency combs have become a key research topic in optics and photonics. A peculiar comb state is the harmonic frequency comb (HFC), where optical lines are spaced by integer multiples of the cavity's free-spectral range. The spontaneous formation of HFCs has recently been observed in semiconductor lasers with fast gain recovery, such as Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs), although the underlying physical mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we provide a physical interpretation for the formation of HFCs in QCLs, based on a resonance phenomenon between an effective Rabi frequency and a mode of the laser cavity. This is corroborated by the results of the numerical integration of the effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations used to describe the multimode laser dynamics, as well as by the linear stability analysis of the continuous wave emission at threshold.

Theory of multicolor soliton microcombs

We present a general theory of multicolor soliton microcombs. These frequency combs require specially engineered dispersion and have an optical spectrum consisting of multiple spectral windows, centered at distinct frequencies. Our theory is based on a multiple-scale approach applied to the Lugiato-Lefever equation, and provides a framework to investigate different pumping configurations. For multi-frequency pumping, we predict a progressively lower pumping threshold as the number of spectral windows increases due to an enhancement of the effective nonlinear parameter. However, multi-frequency pumping is not a prerequisite for the formation of these combs and can emerge even with a single driving field. Our theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Shaping terahertz harmonic frequency combs with frequency dependent external reflectors

We present a method for engineering harmonic frequency combs (HFCs) in the terahertz spectral region. This approach involves interfacing a quantum cascade laser (QCL) with an external reflector featuring frequency-dependent reflectivity. A notable advantage of this method over existing ones is its dual functionality in shaping HFCs, allowing for control over both the frequency offset and comb spacing based on the external reflectivity profile. Moreover, the resulting HFCs manifest as sequences of short pulses in the time domain. Consequently, our method enables the generation of ultrashort picosecond pulses passively, providing a distinct alternative to conventional pulse generation systems reliant on active bias current modulation, which struggle with modulation frequencies significantly higher than the first beatnote. This offers intriguing prospects for utilizing HFCs in pump and probe spectroscopy, a field already recognized in the literature as one of the most compelling applications of these states. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these HFCs can be triggered from an initial condition of free-running unlocked dynamics, eliminating the need for assuming free-running comb emission. Thus, the utilization of an external, frequency-dependent reflector is capable of enhancing the coherence of the QCL emission.

Terahertz semiconductor laser chaos

Chaos characterized by its irregularity and high sensitivity to initial conditions finds various applications in secure optical communications, random number generations, light detection and ranging systems, etc. Semiconductor lasers serve as ideal light platforms for chaos generations owing to the advantages in on-chip integration and complex nonlinear effects. In near-infrared wavelengths, semiconductor laser based chaotic light sources have been extensively studied and experimentally demonstrated. However, in the terahertz (THz) spectral range, due to the lack of effective THz light sources and high-speed detectors, chaos generation in THz semiconductor lasers, e.g., quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), is particularly challenging. Due to the fast intersubband carrier transitions, single mode THz QCLs resemble Class A lasers, where chaos can be hardly excited, even with external perturbations. In this work, we experimentally show a THz chaos source based on a sole multimode THz QCL without any external perturbations. Such a dynamical regime is characterized by the largest Lyapunov exponent associated to the temporal traces of the measured radio frequency (intermode beatnote) signal of the laser. The experimental results and chaos validation are confirmed by simulations of our model based on effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch Equations. To further understand the physical mechanism of the chaos generation in THz QCLs, a reduced model based on two coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations is derived from the full model cited above to systematically investigate the effects of the linewidth enhancement factor and group velocity dispersion on the chaotic regime. This model allows us to show that the chaos generation in the THz QCL can be ascribed to the system attaining the defect mediated turbulence regime.

Unified theory for frequency combs in ring and Fabry-Perot quantum cascade lasers: an order-parameter equation approach

We present a unified model to describe the dynamics of optical frequency combs (OFCs) in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), incorporating both ring and Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity configurations. The model derives a modified complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE), leveraging an order parameter approach and is capable of capturing the dynamics of both configurations, thus enabling a comparative analysis. In the modified CGLE, a nonlinear integral term appears which is associated with the coupling between counterpropagating fields in the FP cavity and whose suppression yields the ring model, which is known to be properly described by a conventional CGLE. We show that this crucial term holds a key role in inhibiting the formation of harmonic frequency combs (HFCs), associated to multi-peaked localized structures, due to its anti-patterning effect. We provide in support a comprehensive campaign of numerical simulations, in which we observe a higher occurrence of HFCs in the ring configuration compared to the FP case. Furthermore, the simulations demonstrate the model's capability to reproduce experimental observations, including the coexistence of amplitude and frequency modulation, linear chirp, and typical dynamic scenarios observed in QCLs. Finally, we perform a linear stability analysis of the single-mode solution for the ring case, confirming its consistency with numerical simulations and highlighting its predictive power regarding the formation of harmonic combs.

Frequency combs induced by optical feedback and harmonic order tunability in quantum cascade lasers

This study investigates the interaction between frequency combs and optical feedback effects in Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs). The theoretical analysis reveals new phenomena arising from the interplay between comb generation and feedback. By considering the bias current corresponding to free-running single mode emission, the introduction of optical feedback can trigger the generation of frequency combs, including both fundamental and harmonic combs. This presents opportunities to extend the comb region and generate harmonic frequency combs with different orders through optimization of external cavity parameters such as losses and length. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that optical feedback can selectively tune the harmonic order of a pre-existing free-running comb by adjusting the external cavity length, particularly for feedback ratios around 1%, which are readily achievable in experimental setups. Under strong feedback conditions (Acket parameter C>4.6), mixed states emerge, displaying the features of both laser and external cavity dynamics. While the study is predominantly centered on Terahertz QCLs, we have also confirmed that the described phenomena occur when utilizing mid-infrared QCL parameters. This work establishes a connection between comb technology and the utilization of optical feedback, providing new avenues for exploration and advancement in the field. In fact, the novel reported phenomena open a pathway towards new methodologies across various domains, such as design of tunable comb sources, hyperspectral imaging, multimode coherent sensing, and multi-channel communication.

Multi-mode Dynamics of Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers: spontaneous and actively induced generation of dense and harmonic coherent regimes

We present an extended study concerning the dynamics of dense and harmonic coherent regimes in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) in a Fabry--Perot (FP) configuration emitting in the terahertz (THz) spectral region. Firstly, we study the device in free running operation, reproducing the main features of the self-generated of optical frequency combs (OFCs) and harmonic frequency combs (HFCs) in this spectral range, commenting on the points of difference from the mid-infrared region, and finding excellent agreement with the most recent experimental evidences. Then, we analyze the THz-QCL dynamics under radiofrequency (RF) injection, with a focus on the effect of the modulation of the current on the degree of locking of the system, and we perform a systematic investigation aimed to provide a procedure for the generation of train of pulses with short duration and high contrast. Furthermore, we extend our study to the generation of sequences of pulses with repetition frequency which is a multiple of the free-spectral range (FSR) of the laser cavity, reproducing harmonic mode-locking (HML) of the laser, a method which has been recently demontrated in experiments with THz-QCLs, and the results of which are particulary promising for a large stream of applications, ranging from optical communication to imaging.

Coherent multi-mode dynamics in a Quantum Cascade Laser: Amplitude and Frequency-modulated Optical Frequency Combs

We cast a theoretical model based on Effective Semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch Equations and study the dynamics of a multi-mode mid-Infrared Quantum Cascade Laser in Fabry Perot with the aim to investigate the spontaneous generation of optical frequency combs. This model encompasses the key features of a semiconductor active medium such as asymmetric,frequency-dependent gain and refractive index as well as the phase-amplitude coupling of the field dynamics provided by the linewidth enhancement factor. Our numerical simulations are in excellent agreement with recent experimental results, showing broad ranges of comb formationin locked regimes, separated by chaotic dynamics when the field modes unlock. In the former case, we identify self-confined structures travelling along the cavity, while the instantaneous frequency is characterized by a linear chirp behaviour. In such regimes we show that OFC are characterized by concomitant and relevant amplitude and frequency modulation.
