Blowups, Gale duality, and moduli spaces

The goal of this paper is to describe the birational geometry of the blowup of $\mathbb{P}^n$ at $n+4$ points in very general position. To achieve this, we follow an idea of Mukai and explore a special instance of Gale duality, namely, a correspondence between configurations of $n+4$ points in the projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^n$ and $\mathbb{P}^2$. We first prove that the blowup $X$ of $\mathbb{P}^n$ at $n+4$ general points is isomorphic to a certain Gieseker moduli space of rank $2$ vector bundles on the surface $S$ obtained by blowing up $\mathbb{P}^2$ at the $n+4$ Gale dual points. We then study the variation of these moduli spaces as we vary the polarization $L$ on $S$, and translate this variation into a partial Mori chamber decomposition of $\overline{Eff}(X)$, describing to some extent the birational geometry of $X$.

On the classification of toric $2$-Fano manifolds: generic $\mathbb{P}^2$-bundles

In this paper, we advance the classification of toric 2-Fano manifolds by continuing the investigation of the minimal projective bundle dimension $m(X) \in \{1,\dots,\dim(X)\}$ introduced in our previous work. This invariant captures the minimal degree of a dominating family of rational curves on $X$ and admits a natural combinatorial interpretation in terms of centered primitive collections. We develop an approach that relates, via toric blowdowns and flips, a toric Fano manifold $X$ to a toric manifold $Y$ that admits a $\mathbb{P}^{m(X)}$-bundle structure on a big open subset. We then compare positivity of the second Chern characters of $X$ and $Y$, and show that the only toric 2-Fano manifold $X$ with $m(X) = 2$ is $X\cong \mathbb{P}^2$. In the example-driven Appendix B, we demonstrate that extending this strategy to the case $m(X)>2$ requires either a substantially more detailed analysis of the combinatorics of primitive collections or a fundamentally new approach.

Hierarchical Locally Recoverable Codes on surfaces

We construct locally recoverable codes with hierarchy from surfaces in $\mathbb{A}^3$ admitting a fibration by curves of Artin-Schreier or Kummer type. We derive the parameters of our codes by leveraging the geometry and arithmetic of the fibration, which is obtained by projection onto one of the coordinates. As a byproduct, we obtain estimates for (and in one case an explicit count of) the number of rational points in certain families of surfaces.

Birational geometry of Calabi-Yau pairs and 3-dimensional Cremona transformations

We develop a framework that allows one to describe the birational geometry of Calabi-Yau pairs $(X,D)$. After establishing some general results for Calabi-Yau pairs $(X,D)$ with mild singularities, we focus on the special case when $X=\mathbb{P}^3$ and $D\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ is a quartic surface. We investigate how the appearance of increasingly worse singularities on $D$ enriches the birational geometry of the pair $(\mathbb{P}^3, D)$.

Horospherical 2-Fano varieties

We classify $2$-Fano horospherical varieties with Picard number $1$. We also review all the known examples of $2$-Fano manifolds and investigate the relation between the $2$-Fano condition and different notions of stability. This paper was conceived as a contribution to the Edge Volume: 2018-2022.

The minimal projective bundle dimension and toric $2$-Fano manifolds

Motivated by the problem of classifying toric $2$-Fano manifolds, we introduce a new invariant for smooth projective toric varieties, the minimal projective bundle dimension. This invariant $m(X)\in\{1, \dots,\dim(X)\}$ captures the minimal degree of a dominating family of rational curves on $X$ or, equivalently, the minimal length of a centrally symmetric primitive relation for the fan of $X$. We classify smooth projective toric varieties with $m(X)\geq \dim(X)-2$, and show that projective spaces are the only $2$-Fano manifolds among smooth projective toric varieties with $m(X)\in\{1, \dim(X)-2,\dim(X)-1,\dim(X)\}$.

Higher Fano Manifolds

In this paper we address Fano manifolds with positive higher Chern characters. They are expected to enjoy stronger versions of several of the nice properties of Fano manifolds. For instance, they should be covered by higher dimensional rational varieties, and families of higher Fano manifolds over higher dimensional bases should admit meromorphic sections (modulo the Brauer obstruction). Aiming at finding new examples of higher Fano manifolds, we investigate positivity of higher Chern characters of rational homogeneous spaces. We determine which rational homogeneous spaces of Picard rank $1$ have positive second Chern character, and show that the only rational homogeneous spaces of Picard rank $1$ having positive second and third Chern characters are projective spaces and quadric hypersurfaces. We also classify Fano manifolds of large index having positive second and third Chern characters. We conclude by discussing conjectural characterizations of projective spaces and complete intersections in terms of these higher Fano conditions.

On automorphisms of moduli spaces of parabolic vector bundles

Fix $n\geq 5$ general points $p_1, \dots, p_n\in\mathbb{P}^1$, and a weight vector $\mathcal{A} = (a_{1}, \dots, a_{n})$ of real numbers $0 \leq a_{i} \leq 1$. Consider the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{A}}$ parametrizing rank two parabolic vector bundles with trivial determinant on $\big(\mathbb{P}^1, p_1,\dots , p_n\big)$ which are semistable with respect to $\mathcal{A}$. Under some conditions on the weights, we determine and give a modular interpretation for the automorphism group of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{A}}$. It is isomorphic to $\left(\frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2\mathbb{Z}}\right)^{k}$ for some $k\in \{0,\dots, n-1\}$, and is generated by admissible elementary transformations of parabolic vector bundles. The largest of these automorphism groups, with $k=n-1$, occurs for the central weight $\mathcal{A}_{F}= \left(\frac{1}{2},\dots,\frac{1}{2}\right)$. The corresponding moduli space ${\mathcal M}_{\mathcal{A}_F}$ is a Fano variety of dimension $n-3$, which is smooth if $n$ is odd, and has isolated singularities if $n$ is even.

Characterization of generic projective space bundles and algebraicity of foliations

In this paper we consider various notions of positivity for distributions on complex projective manifolds. We start by analyzing distributions having big slope with respect to curve classes, obtaining characterizations of generic projective space bundles in terms of movable curve classes. We then apply this result to investigate algebraicity of leaves of foliations, providing a lower bound for the algebraic rank of a foliation in terms of invariants measuring positivity. We classify foliations attaining this bound, and describe those whose algebraic rank slightly exceeds this bound.

Codimension one Fano distributions on Fano manifolds

In this paper we investigate codimension one Fano distributions on Fano manifolds with Picard number one. We classify Fano distributions of maximal index on complete intersections in weighted projective spaces, Fano contact manifolds, Grassmannians of lines and their linear sections, and describe their moduli spaces. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of codimension one del Pezzo distributions on Fano manifolds with Picard number one.

On the Fano variety of linear spaces contained in two odd-dimensional quadrics

In this paper we describe the geometry of the 2m-dimensional Fano manifold G parametrizing (m-1)-planes in a smooth complete intersection Z of two quadric hypersurfaces in the complex projective space P^{2m+2}, for m>0. We show that there are exactly 2^{2m+2} distinct isomorphisms in codimension one between G and the blow-up of P^{2m} at 2m+3 general points, parametrized by the 2^{2m+2} distinct m-planes contained in Z, and describe these rational maps explicitly. We also describe the cones of nef, movable and effective divisors of G, as well as their dual cones of curves. Finally, we determine the automorphism group of G. These results generalize to arbitrary even dimension the classical description of quartic del Pezzo surfaces (m=1).

On non-secant defectivity of Segre-Veronese varieties

Let $SV^{\pmb n}_{\pmb d}$ be the Segre-Veronese given as the image of the embedding induced by the line bundle $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n_1}\times\dots\times\mathbb{P}^{n_r}}(d_1,\dots, d_r)$. We prove that asymptotically $SV^{\pmb n}_{\pmb d}$ is not $h$-defective for $h\leq n_1^{\lfloor \log_2(d-1)\rfloor}$.

Explicit log Fano structures on blow-ups of projective spaces

In this paper we determine which blow-ups $X$ of $\mathbb{P}^n$ at general points are log Fano, that is, when there exists an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $Δ$ such that $-(K_X+Δ)$ is ample and the pair $(X,Δ)$ is klt. For these blow-ups, we produce explicit boundary divisors $Δ$ making $X$ log Fano.

On codimension 1 del Pezzo foliations on varieties with mild singularities

In this paper we extend to the singular setting the theory of Fano foliations developed in our previous paper. A Q-Fano foliation on a complex projective variety X is a foliation F whose anti-canonical class is an ample Q-Cartier divisor. In the spirit of Kobayashi-Ochiai Theorem, we prove that under some conditions the index i of a Q-Fano foliation is bounded by the rank r of F, and classify the cases in which i=r. Next we consider Q-Fano foliations F for which i=r-1. These are called del Pezzo foliations. We classify codimension 1 del Pezzo foliations on mildly singular varieties.

On smooth lattice polytopes with small degree

Toric geometry provides a bridge between the theory of polytopes and algebraic geometry: one can associate to each lattice polytope a polarized toric variety. In this paper we explore this correspondence to classify smooth lattice polytopes having small degree, extending a classification provided by Dickenstein, Di Rocco and Piene. Our approach consists in interpreting the degree of a polytope as a geometric invariant of the corresponding polarized variety, and then applying techniques from Adjunction Theory and Mori Theory.
