On degeneracy schemes of maps of vector bundles and applications to holomorphic foliations

In this paper we provide sufficient conditions for maps of vector bundles on smooth projective varieties to be uniquely determined by their degeneracy schemes. We then specialize to holomorphic distributions and foliations. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for distributions of arbitrary rank on projective spaces to be uniquely determined by their singular schemes.

Flat deformations of ${\mathbb P}^n$

In this paper we study projective flat deformations of projective spaces. We prove that the singular fibers of projective flat deformations of projective spaces appear either in codimension 1 or over singular points of the base. We also describe projective flat deformations of projective spaces with smooth total space, and discuss flatness criteria.

On Fano foliations

In this paper we address Fano foliations on complex projective varieties. These are foliations whose anti-canonical class is ample. We focus our attention on a special class of Fano foliations, namely del Pezzo foliations on complex projective manifolds. We show that these foliations are algebraically integrable, with one exceptional case when the ambient space is a projective space. We also provide a classification of del Pezzo foliations with mild singularities.

Polarized minimal families of rational curves and higher Fano manifolds

In this paper we investigate Fano manifolds $X$ whose Chern characters $ch_k(X)$ satisfy some positivity conditions. Our approach is via the study of polarized minimal families of rational curves $(H_x,L_x)$ through a general point $x\in X$. First we translate positivity properties of the Chern characters of $X$ into properties of the pair $(H_x,L_x)$. This allows us to classify polarized minimal families of rational curves associated to Fano manifolds $X$ satisfying $ch_2(X)\geq0$ and $ch_3(X)\geq0$. As a first application, we provide sufficient conditions for these manifolds to be covered by subvarieties isomorphic to $\mathbb P^2$ and $\mathbb P^3$. Moreover, this classification enables us to find new examples of Fano manifolds satisfying $ch_2(X)\geq0$.

The cone of pseudo-effective divisors of log varieties after Batyrev

In these notes we investigate the cone of nef curves of projective varieties, which is the dual cone to the cone of pseudo-effective divisors. We prove a structure theorem for the cone of nef curves of projective $\mathbb Q$-factorial klt pairs of arbitrary dimension from the point of view of the Minimal Model Program. This is a generalization of Batyrev's structure theorem for the cone of nef curves of projective terminal threefolds.

Rationally connected varieties

This is an expository paper on rationally connected varieties. The aim is to provide an introduction to the subject, as well as to discuss a recent result by T. Graber, J. Harris and J. Starr. The paper is based on the talk I gave at the 2004 Summer Research Conference on Algebraic Geometry at Snowbird.

Rational curves of minimal degree and characterizations of ${\mathbb P}^n$

In this paper we investigate complex uniruled varieties $X$ whose rational curves of minimal degree satisfy a special property. Namely, we assume that the tangent directions to such curves at a general point $x\in X$ form a linear subspace of $T_xX$. As an application of our main result, we give a unified geometric proof of Mori's, Wahl's, Campana-Peternell's and Andreatta-Wiśniewski's characterizations of ${\mathbb P}^n$.

Rational Curves on Varieties

The aim of these notes is to give a introduction to the ideas and techniques of handling rational curves on varieties. The main emphasis is on varieties with many rational curves which are the higher dimensional analogs of rational curves and surfaces. The first six sections closely follow the lectures of J. Kollár given at the summer school ``Higher dimensional varieties and rational points''. The notes were written up by C. Araujo and substantially edited later. Revised version with 2 new sections.

Kähler-Einstein Metrics for some quasi smooth log del Pezzo Surfaces

Recently Johnson and Kollár determined the complete list of anticanonically embedded quasi smooth log del Pezzo surfaces in weighted projective 3-spaces. They also proved that many of those surfaces admit a Kähler-Einstein metric, and that some of them do not have tigers. The aim of this paper is to settle the question of the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics and tigers for those surfaces for which the question was still open. In order to do so, we will use techniques developed earlier by Nadel and Demailly and Kollár.
