Topological nematic phase in Dirac semi-metals

We study the interaction effect in a three dimensional Dirac semimetal and find that two competing orders, charge-density-wave orders and nematic orders, can be induced to gap the Dirac points. Applying a magnetic field can further induce an instability towards forming these ordered phases. The charge density wave phase is similar as that of a Weyl semimetal while the nematic phase is unique for Dirac semimetals. Gapless zero modes are found in the vortex core formed by nematic order parameters, indicating the topological nature of nematic phases. The nematic phase can be observed experimentally using scanning tunnelling microscopy.

Disordered XYZ Spin Chain Simulations using the Spectrum Bifurcation Renormalization Group

We study the disordered XYZ spin chain using the recently developed Spectrum Bifurcation Renormalization Group (SBRG) numerical method. With strong disorder, the phase diagram consists of three many body localized (MBL) spin glass phases. We argue that, with sufficiently strong disorder, these spin glass phases are separated by marginally many-body localized (MBL) critical lines. We examine the critical lines of this model by measuring the entanglement entropy and Edwards-Anderson spin glass order parameter, and find that the critical lines are characterized by an effective central charge c'=ln2. Our data also suggests continuously varying critical exponents along the critical lines. We also demonstrate how long-range mutual information can distinguish these phases.

Quantum critical point of Dirac fermion mass generation without spontaneous symmetry breaking

We study a lattice model of interacting Dirac fermions in $(2+1)$ dimension space-time with an SU(4) symmetry. While increasing interaction strength, this model undergoes a {\it continuous} quantum phase transition from the weakly interacting Dirac semimetal to a fully gapped and nondegenerate phase without condensing any Dirac fermion bilinear mass operator. This unusual mechanism for mass generation is consistent with recent studies of interacting topological insulators/superconductors, and also consistent with recent progresses in lattice QCD community.

Bona fide interaction-driven topological phase transition in correlated SPT states

It is expected that the interplay between non-trivial band topology and strong electron correlation will lead to very rich physics. Thus a controlled study of the competition between topology and correlation is of great interest. Here, employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we provide a concrete example of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard (KMH) model on an AA stacking bilayer honeycomb lattice with inter-layer antiferromagnetic interaction. Our simulation identified several different phases: a quantum spin-Hall insulator (QSH), a $xy$-plane antiferromagnetic Mott insulator ($xy$-AFM) and an inter-layer dimer-singlet insulator (dimer-singlet). Most importantly, a bona fide topological phase transition between the QSH and the dimer-singlet insulators, purely driven by the inter-layer antiferromagnetic interaction is found. At the transition, the spin and charge gap of the system close while the single-particle excitations remain gapped, which means that this transition has no mean field analogue and it can be viewed as a transition between bosonic SPT states. At one special point, this transition is described by a $(2+1)d$ $O(4)$ nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with {\it exact} $SO(4)$ symmetry, and a topological term at {\it exactly} $Θ= π$. Relevance of this work towards more general interacting SPT states is discussed.

Entanglement Holographic Mapping of Many-Body Localized System by Spectrum Bifurcation Renormalization Group

We introduce the spectrum bifurcation renormalization group (SBRG) as a generalization of the real-space renormalization group for the many-body localized (MBL) system without truncating the Hilbert space. Starting from a disordered many-body Hamiltonian in the full MBL phase, the SBRG flows to the MBL fixed-point Hamiltonian, and generates the local conserved quantities and the matrix product state representations for all eigenstates. The method is applicable to both spin and fermion models with arbitrary interaction strength on any lattice in all dimensions, as long as the models are in the MBL phase. In particular, we focus on the $1d$ interacting Majorana chain with strong disorder, and map out its phase diagram using the entanglement entropy. The SBRG flow also generates an entanglement holographic mapping, which duals the MBL state to a fragmented holographic space decorated with small blackholes.

Quantum Phase Transitions Between Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological States Without Sign Problem: Nonlinear Sigma Model with a Topological Term

We propose a series of simple $2d$ lattice interacting fermion models that we demonstrate at low energy describe bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) states and quantum phase transitions between them. This is because due to interaction the fermions are gapped both at the boundary of the SPT states and at the bulk quantum phase transition, thus these models at low energy can be described completely by bosonic degrees of freedom. We show that the bulk of these models is described by a Sp($N$) principal chiral model with a topological $Θ$-term, whose boundary is described by a Sp($N$) principal chiral model with a Wess-Zumino-Witten term at level-1. The quantum phase transition between SPT states in the bulk is tuned by a particular interaction term, which corresponds to tuning $Θ$ in the field theory, and the phase transition occurs at $Θ= π$. The simplest version of these models with $N=1$ is equivalent to the familiar O(4) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with a topological term, whose boundary is a $(1+1)d$ conformal field theory with central charge $c = 1$. After breaking the O(4) symmetry to its subgroups, this model can be viewed as bosonic SPT states with U(1), or $Z_2$ symmetries, etc. All these fermion models including the bulk quantum phase transitions can be simulated with determinant Quantum Monte Carlo method without the sign problem. Recent numerical results strongly suggests that the quantum disordered phase of the O(4) NLSM with precisely $Θ= π$ is a stable $(2+1)d$ conformal field theory (CFT) with gapless bosonic modes.

Classification and Description of Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological Phases with semiclassical Nonlinear Sigma models

In this paper we systematically classify and describe bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in all physical spatial dimensions using semiclassical nonlinear Sigma model (NLSM) field theories. All the SPT phases on a $d-$dimensional lattice discussed in this paper can be described by the same NLSM, which is an O(d+2) NLSM in $(d+1)-$dimensional space-time, with a topological $Θ-$term. The field in the NLSM is a semiclassical Landau order parameter with a unit length constraint. The classification of SPT phases discussed in this paper based on their NLSMs is consistent with the more mathematical classification based on group cohomology. Besides the classification, the formalism used in this paper also allows us to explicitly discuss the physics at the boundary of the SPT phases, and it reveals the relation between SPT phases with different symmetries. For example, it gives many of these SPT states a natural "decorated defect" construction.

Stable Gapless Bose Liquid Phases without any Symmetry

It is well-known that a stable algebraic spin liquid state (or equivalently an algebraic Bose liquid (ABL) state) with emergent gapless photon excitations can exist in quantum spin ice systems, or in a quantum dimer model on a bipartite $3d$ lattice. This photon phase is stable against any weak perturbation without assuming any symmetry. Further works concluded that certain lattice models give rise to more exotic stable algebraic Bose liquid phases with graviton-like excitations. In this paper we will show how these algebraic Bose liquid states can be generalized to stable phases with even more exotic types of gapless excitations and then argue that these new phases are stable against weak perturbations. We also explicitly show that these theories have an (algebraic) topological ground state degeneracy on a torus, and construct the corresponding topological invariants.

Self-dual Quantum Electrodynamics as Boundary State of the three dimensional Bosonic Topological Insulator

Inspired by the recent developments of constructing novel Dirac liquid boundary states of the $3d$ topological insulator, we propose one possible $2d$ boundary state of the $3d$ bosonic symmetry protected topological state with $U(1)_e \rtimes Z_2^T \times U(1)_s $ symmetry. This boundary theory is described by a $(2+1)d$ quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with two flavors of Dirac fermions ($N_f = 2$) coupled with a noncompact U(1) gauge field: $ \mathcal{L} = \sum_{j = 1}^2 \barψ_j γ_μ(\partial_μ- i a_μ) ψ_j - i A^{s}_μ\bar{ψ_i} γ_μτ^z_{ij} ψ_j + \frac{i}{2π} ε_{μνρ} a_μ\partial_νA^{e}_ρ$, where $a_μ$ is the internal noncompact U(1) gauge field, $A^s_μ$ and $A^e_μ$ are two external gauge fields that couple to $U(1)_s$ and $U(1)_e$ global symmetries respectively. We demonstrate that this theory has a "self-dual" structure, which is a fermionic analogue of the self-duality of the noncompact CP$^1$ theory with easy plane anisotropy. Under the self-duality, the boundary action takes exactly the same form except for an exchange between $A^s_μ$ and $A^e_μ$. The self-duality may still hold after we break one of the U(1) symmetries (which makes the system a bosonic topological insulator), with some subtleties that will be discussed.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of strange correlator in interacting topological insulators

Distinguishing the nontrivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase from the trivial insulator phase in the presence of electron-electron interaction is an urgent question to the study of topological insulators, due to the fact that most of the topological indices defined for free electron systems are very likely unsuitable for interacting cases. In this work, we demonstrate that the strange correlator is a sensitive diagnosis to detect SPT states in interacting systems. Employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we investigate the interaction-driven quantum phase transition in the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model. The transition from the quantum spin Hall insulator at weak interaction to an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at strong interaction can be readily detected by the momentum space behavior of the strange correlator in single-particle, spin, and pairing sectors. The interaction effects on the symmetry-protected edge states in various sectors, i.e., the helical Luttinger liquid behavior, are well captured in the QMC measurements of strange correlators. Moreover, we demonstrate that the strange correlator is technically easier to implement in QMC and more robust in performance than other proposed numerical diagnoses for interacting topological states, as only static correlations are needed. The attempt in this work paves the way for using the strange correlator to study interaction-driven topological phase transitions in fermionic as well as bosonic systems.

Exotic Quantum Phase Transitions of $(2+1)d$ Dirac fermions

Using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (d-QMC) simulations, we demonstrate that an extended Hubbard model on a bilayer honeycomb lattice has two novel quantum phase transitions. The first is a quantum phase transition between the weakly interacting gapless Dirac fermion phase and a strongly interacting fully gapped and symmetric trivial phase, which cannot be described by the standard Gross-Neveu model. The second is a quantum critical point between a quantum spin Hall insulator with spin $S^z$ conservation and the previously mentioned strongly interacting fully gapped phase. At the latter quantum critical point the single particle excitations remain gapped, while spin and charge gap both close. We argue that the first quantum phase transition is related to the $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ classification of the topological superconductor $^3\text{He-B}$ phase with interactions, while the second quantum phase transition is a topological phase transition described by a bosonic O(4) nonlinear sigma model field theory with a $Θ$-term.

Wave Function and Strange Correlator of Short Range Entangled states

We demonstrate the following conclusion: If $|Ψ\rangle$ is a $1d$ or $2d$ nontrivial short range entangled state, and $|Ω\rangle$ is a trivial disordered state defined on the same Hilbert space, then the following quantity (so called strange correlator) $C(r, r^\prime) = \frac{\langle Ω|ϕ(r) ϕ(r^\prime) | Ψ\rangle}{\langle Ω| Ψ\rangle}$ either saturates to a constant or decays as a power-law in the limit $|r - r^\prime| \rightarrow +\infty$, even though both $| Ω\rangle$ and $| Ψ\rangle$ are quantum disordered states with short-range correlation. $ϕ(r)$ is some local operator in the Hilbert space. This result is obtained based on both field theory analysis, and also an explicit computation of $C(r, r^\prime)$ for four different examples: $1d$ Haldane phase of spin-1 chain, $2d$ quantum spin Hall insulator with a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling, $2d$ spin-2 AKLT state on the square lattice, and the $2d$ bosonic symmetry protected topological phase with $Z_2$ symmetry. This result can be used as a diagnosis for short range entangled states in $1d$ and $2d$. A possible diagnosis for $3d$ short range entangled states is also proposed.

Bridging Fermionic and Bosonic Short Range Entangled States

In this paper we construct bosonic short range entangled (SRE) states in all spatial dimensions by coupling a $Z_2$ gauge field to fermionic SRE states with the same symmetries, and driving the $Z_2$ gauge field to its confined phase. We demonstrate that this approach allows us to construct many examples of bosonic SRE states, and we demonstrate that the previous descriptions of bosonic SRE states such as the semiclassical nonlinear sigma model field theory and the Chern-Simons field theory can all be derived using the fermionic SRE states.

Many-Body Localization of Symmetry Protected Topological States

We address the following question: Which kinds of symmetry protected topological (SPT) Hamiltonians can be many-body localized? That is, which Hamiltonians with an SPT ground state have finite energy density excited states which are all localized by disorder? Based on the observation that a finite energy density state, if localized, can be viewed as the ground state of a local Hamiltonian, we propose a simple (though possibly incomplete) rule for many-body localization of SPT Hamiltonians: If the ground state and top state (highest energy state) belong to the same SPT phase, then it is possible to localize all the finite energy density states; If the ground and top state belong to different SPT phases, then most likely there are some finite energy density states which can not be fully localized. We will give concrete examples of both scenarios. In some of these examples, we argue that interaction can actually "assist" localization of finite energy density states, which is counter-intuitive to what is usually expected.

Symmetry Protected Topological States of Interacting Fermions and Bosons

We study the classification of interacting fermionic and bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) states. We define a SPT state as whether or not it is separated from the trivial state through a bulk phase transition, which is a general definition applicable to SPT states with or without spatial symmetries. We show that in all dimensions short range interactions can reduce the classification of free fermion SPT states, and we demonstrate these results by making connection between fermionic and bosonic SPT states. We first demonstrate that our formalism gives the correct classification for all the known SPT states, with or without interaction, then we will generalize our method to SPT states that involve the spatial inversion symmetry.

Construction and Field Theory of Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological states beyond Group Cohomology

We construct a series of bosonic symmetry protected topological (BSPT) states beyond group cohomology classification using "decorated defects" approach. This construction is based on topological defects of ordinary Landau order parameters, decorated with the bosonic short range entangled (BSRE) states in $(4k+3)d$ and $(4k+5)d$ space-time (with $k$ being nonnegative integers), which do not need any symmetry. This approach not only gives these BSPT states an intuitive physical picture, it also allows us to derive the effective field theory for all these BSPT states beyond group cohomology.

Self-dual Quantum Electrodynamics on the boundary of 4d Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological States

We study $3d$ (or $(3+1)d$) Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) realized on the boundary of $4d$ (or $(4+1)d$) bosonic symmetry protected topological (BSPT) states, using a systematic nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) field theory description of BSPT states. We demonstrate that many of these QED states have an exact electric-magnetic duality due to the symmetry of the BSPT states in the $4d$ bulk. The gauge charge and Dirac monopole both carry projective representations of the bulk symmetry, and the emergent gapless photons of the QED phase also transform nontrivially under the bulk symmetry. Some of these QED boundary states can be further driven into a $3d$ $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order, and the statistics and symmetry transformation of its point particle and vison loop excitations guarantee that this topological order cannot be driven into a trivial confined or Higgs phase. With a finite fourth dimension, the entire system becomes a $3d$ lattice, the self-dual QED and the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order can coexist on two opposite boundaries respectively, which together constitute an exotic $3d$ self-dual "topological photon phase".

Interacting Topological Insulator and Emergent Grand Unified Theory

Motivated by the Pati-Salam Grand Unified Theory, we study $(4+1)d$ topological insulators with $SU(4) \times SU(2)_1 \times SU(2)_2$ symmetry, whose $(3+1)d$ boundary has 16 flavors of left-chiral fermions, which form representations $(\mathbf{4}, \mathbf{2}, \mathbf{1})$ and $(\bar{\mathbf{4}}, \mathbf{1}, \mathbf{2})$. The key result we obtain is that, without any interaction, this topological insulator has a $\mathbb{Z}$ classification, namely any quadratic fermion mass operator at the $(3+1)d $ boundary is prohibited by the symmetries listed above; while under interaction this system becomes trivial, namely its $(3+1)d$ boundary can be gapped out by a properly designed short range interaction without generating nonzero vacuum expectation value of any fermion bilinear mass, or in other words, its $(3+1)d$ boundary can be driven into a "strongly coupled symmetric gapped (SCSG) phase". Based on this observation, we propose that after coupling the system to a dynamical $SU(4) \times SU(2)_1 \times SU(2)_2$ lattice gauge field, the Pati-Salam GUT can be fully regularized as the boundary states of a $(4+1)d$ topological insulator with a {\it thin} fourth spatial dimension, the thin fourth dimension makes the entire system generically a $(3+1)d$ system. The mirror sector on the opposite boundary will {\it not} interfere with the desired GUT, because the mirror sector is driven to the SCSG phase by a carefully designed interaction and is hence decoupled from the GUT.
