Topological Orders with Global Gauge Anomalies

By definition, the physics of the $d-$dimensional (dim) boundary of a $(d+1)-$dim symmetry protected topological (SPT) state cannot be realized as itself on a $d-$dim lattice. If the symmetry of the system is unitary, then a formal way to determine whether a $d-$dim theory must be a boundary or not, is to couple this theory to a gauge field (or to "gauge" its symmetry), and check if there is a gauge anomaly. In this paper we discuss the following question: can the boundary of a SPT state be driven into a fully gapped topological order which preserves all the symmetries? We argue that if the gauge anomaly of the boundary is "perturbative", then the boundary must remain gapless; while if the boundary only has global gauge anomaly but no perturbative anomaly, then it is possible to gap out the boundary by driving it into a topological state, when $d \geq 2$. We will demonstrate this conclusion with two examples: (1) the $3d$ spin-1/2 chiral fermion with the well-known Witten's global anomaly, which is the boundary of a $4d$ topological superconductor with SU(2) or U(1)$\rtimes Z_2$ symmetry; and (2) the $4d$ boundary of a $5d$ topological superconductor with the same symmetry. We show that these boundary systems can be driven into a fully gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$ topological order with topological degeneracy, but this $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$ topological order cannot be future driven into a trivial confined phase that preserves all the symmetries due to some special properties of its topological defects.

Bosonic Short Range Entangled states Beyond Group Cohomology classification

We explore and construct a class of bosonic short range entangled (BSRE) states in all $4k+2$ spatial dimensions, which are higher dimensional generalizations of the well-known Kitaev's $E_8$ state in 2d. These BSRE states share the following properties: (1) their bulk is fully gapped and nondegenerate; (2) their $(4k+1)d$ boundary is described by a "self-dual" rank-$2k$ antisymmetric tensor gauge field, and it is guaranteed to be gapless without assuming any symmetry; (3) their $(4k+1)d$ boundary has intrinsic gravitational anomaly once coupled to the gravitational field; (4) their bulk is described by an effective Chern-Simons field theory with rank-$(2k+1)$ antisymmetric tensor fields, whose $K^{IJ}$ matrix is identical to that of the $E_8$ state in $2d$; (5) The existence of these BSRE states lead to various bosonic symmetry protected topological (BSPT) states as their descendants in other dimensions; (6) These BSRE states can be constructed by confining fermionic degrees of freedom from 8 copies of $(4k+2)d$ SRE states with fermionic $2k-$branes; (7) After compactifying the $(4k+2)d$ BSRE state on a closed $4k$ dimensional manifold, depending on the topology of the compact $4k$ manifold, the system could reduce to nontrivial $2d$ BSRE states.

Anyon and Loop Braiding Statistics in Field Theories with a Topological $Θ-$term

We demonstrate that the anyon statistics and three-loop statistics of various 2d and 3d topological phases can be derived using semiclassical nonlinear Sigma model field theories with a topological $Θ$-term. In our formalism, the braiding statistics has a natural geometric meaning: The braiding process of anyons or loops leads to a nontrivial field configuration in the space-time, which will contribute a braiding phase factor due to the $Θ$-term.

Interacting Topological Superconductors and possible Origin of $16n$ Chiral Fermions in the Standard Model

Motivated by the observation that the Standard Model of particle physics (plus a right-handed neutrino) has precisely 16 Weyl fermions per generation, we search for $(3+1)$-dimensional chiral fermionic theories and chiral gauge theories that can be regularized on a 3 dimensional spatial lattice when and only when the number of flavors is an integral multiple of 16. All these results are based on the observation that local interactions reduce the classification of certain $(4+1)$-dimensional topological superconductors from $\mathbb{Z}$ to $\mathbb{Z}_{8}$, which means that one of their $(3+1)$-dimensional boundaries can be gapped out by interactions without breaking any symmetry when and only when the number of boundary chiral fermions is an integral multiple of $16$.

Topological number and Fermion Green's function of Strongly Interacting Topological Superconductors

It has been understood that short range interactions can reduce the classification of topological superconductors in all dimensions. In this paper we demonstrate by explicit calculations that when the topological phase transition between two distinct phases in the noninteracting limit is gapped out by interaction, the bulk fermion Green's function $G(iω)$ at the "transition" approaches zero as $G(iω) \sim ω$ at certain momentum $\vec{k}$ in the Brillouin zone.

Quantum Phase Transition between Z2 spin liquid and columnar Valence Bond Crystals on a Triangular lattice

We study the quantum phase transition between the $Z_2$ spin liquid and valence bond solid (VBS) orders on a triangular lattice. With a fully isotropic triangular lattice, the transition from a columnar or resonating-plaquette VBS order can be either first order or there could be two transitions with an intermediate phase. If the transition splits into two, then the $Z_2$ spin liquid will first experience a first order $q=3$ Potts transition to a new nematic $Z_2$ spin liquid that breaks the $2π/3$ lattice rotation symmetry (but retain translation symmetry unlike the VBS states). The second transition will then take this new nematic $Z_2$ spin liquid to a columnar or resonating-plaquette VBS state through a second order $3d$ XY$^*$ transition. On a distorted triangular lattice, the degeneracy between some of the different columnar VBS orders is lifted, and the phase transition can reduce to a single $3d$ XY$^*$ transition.

Theory of a competitive spin liquid state for weak Mott insulators on the triangular lattice

We propose a novel quantum spin liquid state that can explain many of the intriguing experimental properties of the low-temperature phase of the organic spin liquid candidate materials. This state of paired fermionic spinons preserves all symmetries of the system, and it has a gapless excitation spectrum with quadratic bands that touch at momentum ~ k = 0. This quadratic band touching is protected by the symmetry of the system. Using variational Monte Carlo techniques, we show that this state has highly competitive energy in the triangular lattice Heisenberg model supplemented with a realistically large ring-exchange term.

Nonperturbative effects of Topological Theta-term

We study the effects of a topological Theta-term on 2+1 dimensional principal chiral models (PCM), which are nonlinear sigma models defined on Lie group manifolds. We find that when Theta = pi, the nature of the disordered phase of the principal chiral model is strongly affected by the topological term: it is either a gapless conformal field theory, or it is gapped and two-fold degenerate. The result of our paper can be used to analyze the boundary states of three dimensional symmetry protected topological phases.

Wave Functions of Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological Phases

We study the structure of the ground state wave functions of bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) insulators in 3 space dimensions. We demonstrate that the differences with conventional insulators are captured simply in a dual vortex description. As an example we show that a previously studied bosonic topological insulator with both global U(1) and time-reversal symmetry can be described by a rather simple wave function written in terms of dual "vortex ribbons". The wave function is a superposition of all the vortex ribbon configurations of the boson, and a factor (-1) is associated with each self-linking of the vortex ribbons. This wave function can be conveniently derived using an effective field theory of the SPT in the strong coupling limit, and it naturally explains all the phenomena of this SPT phase discussed previously. The ground state structure for other 3d bosonic SPT phases are also discussed similarly in terms of vortex loop gas wave functions. We show that our methods reproduce known results on the ground state structure of some 2d SPT phases.

Line defects in Three dimensional Symmetry Protected Topological Phases

A 3d symmetry protected topological phase, by definition must have symmetry protected nontrivial boundary states, namely its 2d boundary must be either gapless or degenerate. In this work we demonstrate that once we couple a 3d SPT phase to a lattice dynamical Z2 gauge field, in many cases the Z2 vison loop excitation (line defect) can be viewed as a "1d boundary" of the 3d SPT phase, and this line defect is guaranteed to have gapless or degenerate spectrum, which is also protected by the symmetry of the SPT phase.

Three dimensional Symmetry Protected Topological Phase close to Antiferromagnetic Neel order

It is well-known that the Haldane phase of one-dimensional spin-1 chain is a symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase, which is described by a nonlinear Sigma model (NLSM) with a Theta-term at Theta = 2Pi. In this work we study a three dimensional SPT phase of SU(2N) antiferromagnetic spin system with a self-conjugate representation on every site. The spin ordered Neel phase of this system has a ground state manifold M = U(2N)/[U(N)xU(N)], and this system is described by a NLSM defined with manifold M. Since the homotopy group Pi4[M] = Z for N > 1, this NLSM can naturally have a Theta-term. We will argue that when Theta = 2Pi this NLSM describes a SPT phase. This SPT phase is protected by the SU(2N) spin symmetry, or its subgroup SU(N)xSU(N)xZ2, without assuming any other discrete symmetry. We will also construct a trial SU(2N) spin state on a 3d lattice, we argue that the long wavelength physics of this state is precisely described by the aforementioned NLSM with Theta = 2Pi.

Two dimensional Symmetry Protected Topological Phases with PSU(N) and time reversal symmetry

Symmetry protected topological phase is one type of nontrivial quantum disordered many-body state of matter. In this work we study one class of symmetry protected topological phases in two dimensional space, with both PSU(N) and time reversal symmetry. These states can be described by a principal chiral model with a topological Theta-term. As long as the time-reversal symmetry and PSU(N) symmetry are both preserved, the 1+1 dimensional boundary of this system must be either gapless or degenerate. We will also construct a wave function of a spin-1 system on the honeycomb lattice, which is a candidate for the symmetry protected topological phase with both SO(3) and time-reversal symmetry.

Non-Fermi liquid and topological states with strong spin-orbit coupling

We argue that a class of strongly spin-orbit coupled materials, including some pyrochlore iridates and the inverted band gap semiconductor HgTe, may be described by a minimal model consisting of the Luttinger Hamiltonian supplemented by Coulomb interactions, a problem studied by Abrikosov and collaborators. It contains two-fold degenerate conduction and valence bands touching quadratically at the zone center. Using modern renormalization group methods, we update and extend Abrikosov's classic work and show that interactions induce a quantum critical non-Fermi liquid phase, stable provided time-reversal and cubic symmetries are maintained. We determine the universal power-law exponents describing various observables in this "Luttinger Abrikosov Beneslavskii" state, which include conductivity, specific heat,non-linear susceptibility and magnetic Gruneisen number. Furthermore, we determine the phase diagram in the presence of cubic and/or time-reversal symmetry breaking perturbations, which includes topological insulator and Weyl semi-metal phases. Many of these phases possess an extraordinarily large anomalous Hall effect, with the Hall conductivity scaling sub-linearly with magnetization.

Dyon condensation in topological Mott insulators

We consider quantum phase transitions out of topological Mott insulators in which the ground state of the fractionalized excitations (fermionic spinons) is topologically non-trivial. The spinons in topological Mott insulators are coupled to an emergent compact U(1) gauge field with a so-called "axion" term. We study the confinement transitions from the topological Mott insulator to broken symmetry phases, which may occur via the condensation of dyons. Dyons carry both "electric" and "magnetic" charges, and arise naturally in this system because the monopoles of the emergent U(1) gauge theory acquires gauge charge due to the axion term. It is shown that the dyon condensate, in general, induces simultaneous current and bond orders. To demonstrate this, we study the confined phase of the topological Mott insulator on the cubic lattice. When the magnetic transition is driven by dyon condensation, we identify the bond order as valence bond solid order and the current order as scalar spin chirality order. Hence, the confined phase of the topological Mott insulator is an exotic phase where the scalar spin chirality and the valence bond order coexist and appear via a single transition. We discuss implications of our results for generic models of topological Mott insulators.

Exotic continuous quantum phase transition between Z2 topological spin liquid and Neel order

Recent numerical simulations with different techniques have all suggested the existence of a continuous quantum phase transition between the Z2 topological spin liquid phase and a conventional Neel order. Motivated by these numerical progresses, we propose a candidate theory for such Z2-Neel transition. We first argue on general grounds that, for a SU(2) invariant system, this transition cannot be interpreted as the condensation of spinons in the Z2 spin liquid phase. Then we propose that such Z2-Neel transition is driven by proliferating the bound state of the bosonic spinon and vison excitation of the Z2 spin liquid, i.e. the so called (e, m)-type excitation. Universal critical exponents associated with this exotic transition are computed using 1/N expansion. This theory predicts that at the Z2-Neel transition, there is an emergent quasi long range power law correlation of columnar valence bond solid order parameter.

Exciton condensations in thin film topological insulator

We study the many-body physics in thin film topological band insulator, where the inter-edge Coulomb interaction can lead to an exciton condensation transition. We investigate the universality class of the exciton condensation quantum critical point. With different chemical potentials and interactions, the exciton condensation can belong to z = 2 mean field, or 3d XY, or Yukawa-Higgs universality classes. The interplay between exciton condensate and the time-reversal symmetry breaking is also discussed. Predictions of our work can be tested experimentally by tuning the chemical potentials on both surfaces of the thin film through gate voltage. We also show that all the analysis of the exciton condensate can be directly applied to a spin-triplet superconductor phase with attractive inter-edge interaction.

Plaquette order and deconfined quantum critical point in the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

We have precisely determined the ground state phase diagram of the quantum spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice using the tensor renormalization group method. We find that the ferromagnetic, ferroquadrupolar, and a large part of the antiferromagnetic phases are stable against quantum fluctuations. However, around the phase where the ground state is antiferroquadrupolar ordered in the classical limit, quantum fluctuations suppress completely all magnetic orders, leading to a plaquette order phase which breaks the lattice symmetry but preserves the spin SU(2) symmetry. On the evidence of our numerical results, the quantum phase transition between the antiferromagnetic phase and the plaquette phase is found to be either a direct second order or a very weak first order transition.

Pair Superfluid and Supersolid of Correlated Hard-Core Bosons on a Triangular Lattice

We have systematically studied the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model with correlated hopping on a triangular lattice using density-matrix renormalization group method. A rich ground state phase diagram is determined. In this phase diagram there is a supersolid phase and a pair superfluid phase due to the interplay between the ordinary frustrated boson hopping and an unusual correlated hopping. In particular, we find that the quantum phase transition between the supersolid phase and the pair superfluid phase is continuous.
