Performance Analysis of Passive Retro-Reflector Based Tracking in Free-Space Optical Communications with Pointing Errors

In this correspondence, we propose a diversity-achieving retroreflector-based fine tracking system for free-space optical (FSO) communications. We show that multiple retroreflectors deployed around the communication telescope at the aerial vehicle save the payload capacity and enhance the outage performance of the fine tracking system. Through the analysis of the joint-pointing loss of the multiple retroreflectors, we derive the ordered moments of the received power. Our analysis can be further utilized for studies on multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-FSO. After the moment-based estimation of the received power distribution, we numerically analyze the outage performance. The greatest challenge of retroreflector-based FSO communication is a significant decrease in power. Still, our selected numerical results show that, from an outage perspective, the proposed method can surpass conventional methods.

Mutual Information for Electromagnetic Information Theory Based on Random Fields

Traditional channel capacity based on the discrete spatial dimensions mismatches the continuous electromagnetic fields. For the wireless communication system in a limited region, the spatial discretization may results in information loss because the continuous field can not be perfectly recovered from the sampling points. Therefore, electromagnetic information theory based on spatially continuous electromagnetic fields becomes necessary to reveal the fundamental theoretical capacity bound of communication systems. In this paper, we propose analyzing schemes for the performance limit between continuous transceivers. Specifically, we model the communication process between two continuous regions by random fields. Then, for the white noise model, we use Mercer expansion to derive the mutual information between the source and the destination. For the close-form expression, an analytic method is introduced based on autocorrelation functions with rational spectrum. Moreover, the Fredholm determinant is used for the general autocorrelation functions to provide the numerical calculation scheme. Further works extend the white noise model to colored noise and discuss the mutual information under it. Finally, we build an ideal model with infinite-length source and destination which shows a strong correpsondence with the time-domain model in classical information theory. The mutual information and the capacity are derived through the spatial spectral density.

Impact of Phase-Shift Error on the Secrecy Performance of Uplink RIS Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been recognized as a promising technique for the sixth generation (6G) of mobile communication networks. The key feature of RIS is to reconfigure the propagation environment via smart signal reflections. In addition, active RIS schemes have been recently proposed to overcome the deep path loss attenuation inherent in the RIS-aided communication systems. Accordingly, this paper considers the secrecy performance of up-link RIS-aided multiple users multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication systems, in the presence of multiple passive eavesdroppers. In contrast to the existing works, we investigate the impact of the RIS phase shift errors on the secrecy performance. Taking into account the complex environment, where a general Rician channel model is adopted for all the communication links, closed-form approximate expressions for the ergodic secrecy rate are derived for three RIS configurations, namely, i) passive RIS, ii) active RIS, iii) active RIS with energy harvesting (EH RIS). Then, based on the derived expressions, we optimize the phase shifts at the RIS to enhance the system performance. In addition, the best RIS configuration selection is considered for a given target secrecy rate and amount of the power available at the users. Finally, Monte-Carlo simulations are provided to verify the accuracy of the analysis, and the impact of different system parameters on the secrecy performance is investigated. The results in this paper show that, an active RIS scheme can be implemented to enhance the secrecy performance of RIS-aided communication systems with phase shift errors, especially when the users have limited transmission power.

The Internet of Bio-Nano Things in Blood Vessels: System Design and Prototypes

In this paper, we investigate the Internet of Bio-Nano Things (IoBNT) which relates to networks formed by molecular communications. By providing a means of communication through the ubiquitously connected blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries), molecular communication-based IoBNT enables a host of new eHealth applications. For example, an organ monitoring sensor can transfer internal body signals through the IoBNT for health monitoring applications. We empirically show that blood vessel channels introduce a new set of challenges for the design of molecular communication systems in comparison to free-space channels. We then propose cylindrical duct channel models and discuss the corresponding system designs conforming to the channel characteristics. Furthermore, based on prototype implementations, we confirm that molecular communication techniques can be utilized for composing the IoBNT. We believe that the promising results presented in this work, together with the rich research challenges that lie ahead, are strong indicators that IoBNT with molecular communications can drive novel applications for emerging eHealth systems.

Free-Space Optical Communications for 6G Wireless Networks: Challenges, Opportunities, and Prototype Validation

Numerous researchers have studied innovations in future sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications. Indeed, a critical issue that has emerged is to contend with society's insatiable demand for high data rates and massive 6G connectivity. Some scholars consider one innovation to be a breakthrough--the application of free-space optical (FSO) communication. Owing to its exceedingly high carrier frequency/bandwidth and the potential of the unlicensed spectrum domain, FSO communication provides an excellent opportunity to develop ultrafast data links that can be applied in a variety of 6G applications, including heterogeneous networks with enormous connectivity and wireless backhauls for cellular systems. In this study, we perform video signal transmissions via an FPGA-based FSO communication prototype to investigate the feasibility of an FSO link with a distance of up to 20~km. We use a channel emulator to reliably model turbulence, scintillation, and power attenuation of the long-range FSO channel. We use the FPGA-based real-time SDR prototype to process the transmitted and received video signals. Our study also presents the channel-generation process of a given long-distance FSO link. To enhance the link quality, we apply spatial selective filtering to suppress the background noise generated by sunlight. To measure the misalignment of the transceiver, we use sampling-based pointing, acquisition, and tracking to compensate for it by improving the signal-to-noise ratio. For the main video signal transmission testbed, we consider various environments by changing the amount of turbulence and wind speed. We demonstrate that the testbed even permits the successful transmission of ultra-high-definition (UHD: 3840 x 2160 resolution) 60 fps videos under severe turbulence and high wind speeds.

Beyond Transmitting Bits: Context, Semantics, and Task-Oriented Communications

Communication systems to date primarily aim at reliably communicating bit sequences. Such an approach provides efficient engineering designs that are agnostic to the meanings of the messages or to the goal that the message exchange aims to achieve. Next generation systems, however, can be potentially enriched by folding message semantics and goals of communication into their design. Further, these systems can be made cognizant of the context in which communication exchange takes place, providing avenues for novel design insights. This tutorial summarizes the efforts to date, starting from its early adaptations, semantic-aware and task-oriented communications, covering the foundations, algorithms and potential implementations. The focus is on approaches that utilize information theory to provide the foundations, as well as the significant role of learning in semantics and task-aware communications.

Dynamic RF Beam Codebook Reduction for Cost-Efficient mmWave Full-Duplex Systems

The recent attempts to realize full-duplex (FD) communications in millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have garnered a significant amount of interest for its potential. In this paper, we present a cost-efficient design of mmWave FD systems, where the system dynamically reduces the RF beam codebook in a computationally efficient manner, so that it is comprised of the RF beams that will prevent the Rx receive chain from saturating due to the self-interference (SI). The analog beamformer will suppress the SI to the level that the residual SI can be completely removed with digital SI cancellation, allowing the digital beamformer to concentrate on the desired channel, free of the SI. To reduce the computation required for the proposed method, we propose two sufficient conditions that prevent the Rx side saturations, which are practically tight. Through performance valuations conducted in realistically modeled mmWave FD scenarios, we demonstrate that the proposed design achieves comparable performance with the ideal FD and other benchmarks with significantly lower costs.

Analog Self-Interference Cancellation with Practical RF Components for Full-Duplex Radios

One of the main obstacles in full-duplex radios is analog-to-digital converter (ADC) saturation on a receiver due to the strong self-interference (SI). To solve this issue, researchers have proposed two different types of analog self-interference cancellation (SIC) methods -- i) passive suppression and ii) regeneration-and-subtraction of SI. For the latter case, the tunable RF component, such as a multi-tap circuit, reproduces and subtracts the SI. The resolutions of such RF components constitute the key factor of the analog SIC. Indeed, they are directly related to how well the SI is imitated. Another major issue in analog SIC is the inaccurate estimation of the SI channel due to the nonlinear distortions, which mainly come from the power amplifier (PA). In this paper, we derive a closed-form expression for the SIC performance of the multi-tap circuit; we consider how the RF components must overcome such practical impairments as digitally-controlled attenuators, phase shifters, and PA. For a realistic performance analysis, we exploit the measured PA characteristics and carry out a 3D ray-tracing-based, system-level throughput analysis. Our results confirm that the non-idealities of the RF components significantly affect the analog SIC performance. We believe our study provides insight into the design of the practical full-duplex system.

Performance Analysis of Self-Interference Cancellation in Full-Duplex Massive MIMO Systems: Subtraction versus Spatial Suppression

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and full-duplex (FD) are promising candidates for achieving the spectral efficiency to meet the needs of 5G communications. One essential key to realizing practical FD massive MIMO systems is how to effectively mitigate the self-interference (SI). Conventionally, however, the performance comparison of different SI methods by reflecting the actual channel characteristics was insufficient in the literature. Accordingly, this paper presents a performance analysis of SI cancellation (SIC) methods in FD massive MIMO systems. Analytical and numerical results confirm that, in an imperfect channel-estimation case, the ergodic rates performance of the spatial suppression in the uplink outperforms those of the SI subtraction, due to the correlation between the precoder and the estimation error of the SI channel. In addition, we discuss which method performs better under different given system constraints such as uplink and downlink sum rates, the total transmit power, and the power scaling law.

Demo: A Transparent Antenna System for In-Building Networks

For in-building networks, the potential of transparent antennas, which are used as windows of a building, is presented in this paper. In this scenario, a transparent window antenna communicates with outdoor devices or base stations, and the indoor repeaters act as relay stations of the transparent window antenna for indoor devices. At indoor, back lobe waves of the transparent window antenna are defined as interference to in-building networks. Hence, we analyze different SIR and SINR results according to the location of an indoor repeater through 3D ray tracing system-level simulation. Furthermore, a link-level simulation through a full-duplex software-defined radio platform with the fabricated transparent antenna is presented to examine the feasibility of the transparent antenna.

Demo: Real-Time Semantic Communications with a Vision Transformer

Semantic communications are expected to enable the more effective delivery of meaning rather than a precise transfer of symbols. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep neural network-based architecture for image transmission and demonstrate its feasibility in a real-time wireless channel by implementing a prototype based on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). We demonstrate that this system outperforms the traditional 256-quadrature amplitude modulation system in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime with the popular CIFAR-10 dataset. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that implements and investigates real-time semantic communications with a vision transformer.

An Energy-efficient Aerial Backhaul System with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

In this paper, we propose a novel wireless architecture, mounted on a high-altitude aerial platform, which is enabled by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). By installing RIS on the aerial platform, rich line-of-sight and full-area coverage can be achieved, thereby, overcoming the limitations of the conventional terrestrial RIS. We consider a scenario where a sudden increase in traffic in an urban area triggers authorities to rapidly deploy unmanned-aerial vehicle base stations (UAV-BSs) to serve the ground users. In this scenario, since the direct backhaul link from the ground source can be blocked due to several obstacles from the urban area, we propose reflecting the backhaul signal using aerial-RIS so that it successfully reaches the UAV-BSs. We jointly optimize the placement and array-partition strategies of aerial-RIS and the phases of RIS elements, which leads to an increase in energy-efficiency of every UAV-BS. We show that the complexity of our algorithm can be bounded by the quadratic order, thus implying high computational efficiency. We verify the performance of the proposed algorithm via extensive numerical evaluations and show that our method achieves an outstanding performance in terms of energy-efficiency compared to benchmark schemes.

Beam Squint in Ultra-wideband mmWave Systems: RF Lens Array vs. Phase-Shifter-Based Array

In this article, we discuss the potential of radio frequency (RF) lens for ultra-wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems. In terms of the beam squint, we compare the proposed RF lens antenna with the phase shifter-based array for hybrid beamforming. To reduce the complexities for fully digital beamforming, researchers have come up with RF lens-based hybrid beamforming. The use of mmWave systems, however, causes an increase in bandwidth, which gives rise to the beam squint phenomenon. We first find the causative factors for beam squint in the dielectric RF lens antenna. Based on the beamforming gain at each frequency, we verify that, in a specific situation, RF lens can be free of the beam squint effect. We use 3D electromagnetic analysis software to numerically interpret the beam squint of each antenna type. Based on the results, we present the degraded spectral efficiency by system-level simulations with 3D indoor ray tracing. Finally, to verify our analysis, we fabricate an actual RF lens antenna and demonstrate the real performance using a mmWave, NI PXIe, software-defined radio system.

RF Lens Antenna Array-Based One-Shot Coarse Pointing for Hybrid RF/FSO Communications

Because of its high directivity, free-space optical (FSO) communication offers a number of advantages. It can, however, give rise to major system difficulties concerning alignment between two terminals. During the link-acquisition step (a.k.a. coarse pointing), a ground station can be prevented from acquiring optical links due to pointing errors and insufficient information about unmanned aerial vehicle locations. We propose, in this letter, a radio-frequency (RF) lens antenna array to increase the performance of coarse pointing in hybrid RF/FSO communications. The proposed algorithm using a novel closed-form angle estimator, compared to conventional methods, reduces the minimum outage probability by over a thousand times.

MIMO Operations in Molecular Communications: Theory, Prototypes, and Open Challenges

The Internet of Bio-nano Things is a significant development for next generation communication technologies. Because conventional wireless communication technologies face challenges in realizing new applications (e.g., in-body area networks for health monitoring) and necessitate the substitution of information carriers, researchers have shifted their interest to molecular communications (MC). Although remarkable progress has been made in this field over the last decade, advances have been far from acceptable for the achievement of its application objectives. A crucial problem of MC is the low data rate and high error rate inherent in particle dynamics specifications, in contrast to wave-based conventional communications. Therefore, it is important to investigate the resources by which MC can obtain additional information paths and provide strategies to exploit these resources. This study aims to examine techniques involving resource aggregation and exploitation to provide prospective directions for future progress in MC. In particular, we focus on state-of-the-art studies on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We discuss the possible advantages of applying MIMO to various MC system models. Furthermore, we survey various studies that aimed to achieve MIMO gains for the respective models, from theoretical background to prototypes. Finally, we conclude this study by summarizing the challenges that need to be addressed.

Full Duplex Integrated Access and Backhaul for 5G NR: Analyses and Prototype Measurements

Integrated access and backhaul (IAB) frameworks for 5G new radio (NR) as a cost-effective alternative to the wired backhaul have been investigated by 3GPP. A promising solution for this framework is the integration of full duplex (FD) technologies to enhance the spectral efficiency and make an efficient use of the network resources-termed FD IAB. However, FD IAB presents significant technical challenges, such as self-interference (SI) in the IAB framework, which may cast doubt over the feasibility of FD IAB. In this article, we present a brief tutorial of the FD IAB framework and its enabling technologies. We then numerically evaluate and discuss the link-level SI reduction and the system-level downlink throughput performance of the FD IAB. Finally, we validate the feasibility of FD IAB using 28 GHz hardware prototype measurements of propagation-domain SI suppression. Our numerical evaluations and prototype measurements confirm that the FD IAB serves as a promising framework for 5G NR.

A Vision of XR-aided Teleoperation System Towards 5G/B5G

Extended Reality (XR)-aided teleoperation has shown its potential in improving operating efficiency in mission-critical, rich-information and complex scenarios. The multi-sensory XR devices introduce several new types of traffic with unique quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, which are usually defined by three measures---human perception, corresponding sensors, and present devices. To fulfil these requirements, cellular-supported wireless connectivity can be a promising solution that can largely benefit the Robot-to-XR and the XR-to-Robot links. In this article, we present industrial and piloting use cases and identify the service bottleneck of each case. We then cover the QoS of Robot-XR and XR-Robot links by summarizing the sensors' parameters and processing procedures. To realise these use cases, we introduce potential solutions for each case with cellular connections. Finally, we build testbeds to investigate the effectiveness of supporting our proposed links using current wireless topologies.

On the Power Leakage Problem in Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO with Lens Antenna Arrays

The emerging millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with lens antenna arrays, which is also known as "beamspace MIMO", can effectively reduce the required number of power-hungry radio frequency (RF) chains. Therefore, it has been considered as a promising technique for the upcoming 5G communications and beyond. However, most current studies on beamspace MIMO have not taken into account the important power leakage problem in beamspace channels, which possibly leads to a significant degradation in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the system sum-rate. To this end, we propose a beam aligning precoding method to handle the power leakage problem in this paper. Firstly, a phase shifter network (PSN) structure is proposed, which enables each RF chain in beamspace MIMO to select multiple beams to collect the leakage power. Then, a rotation-based precoding algorithm is designed based on the proposed PSN structure, which aligns the channel gains of the selected beams towards the same direction for maximizing the received SNR at each user. Furthermore, we reveal some system design insights by analyzing the sum-rate and energy efficiency (EE) of the proposed beam aligning precoding method. In simulations, the proposed approach is found to achieve the near-optimal sum-rate performance compared with the ideal case of no power leakage, and obtains a higher EE than the existing schemes with either a linear or planar array.
