Demo: A Unified Platform of Free-Space Optics for High-Quality Video Transmission

In this paper, we investigate video signal transmission through an FPGA-based free-space optical (FSO) communication system prototype. We use a channel emulator that models the turbulence, scintillation, and power attenuation of the FSO channel and the FPGA-based real-time prototype for processing transmitted and received video signals. We vary the setup environment of the channel emulator by changing the amount of turbulence and wind speed. At the end of the demonstration, we show that through our testbed, even 4K ultra-high-definition (UHD) resolution video with 60 fps can be successfully transmitted under high turbulence and wind speed.

Two-Way Molecular Communications

For nano-scale communications, there must be cooperation and simultaneous communication between nano devices. To this end, in this paper we investigate two-way (a.k.a. bi-directional) molecular communications between nano devices. If different types of molecules are used for the communication links, the two-way system eliminates the need to consider self-interference. However, in many systems, it is not feasible to use a different type of molecule for each communication link. Thus, we propose a two-way molecular communication system that uses a single type of molecule. We develop a channel model for this system and use it to analyze the proposed system's bit error rate, throughput, and self-interference. Moreover, we propose analog- and digital- self-interference cancellation techniques. The enhancement of link-level performance using these techniques is confirmed with both numerical and analytical results.

Energy-efficient Deployment of Multiple UAVs Using Ellipse Clustering to Establish Base Stations

The demand for future wireless communication systems is being satisfied for various circumstances through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which act as flying base stations (BSs). In this letter, we propose an ellipse clustering algorithm that maximizes the user coverage probability of UAV- BSs and avoids inter-cell interference with minimal transmit power. We obtain the coverage of each UAV by adjusting its antenna half-power beamwidth, orientation, and 3D location by minimizing the path loss of the cell-edge user. Simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm achieves high system throughput and coverage probability with lower transmit power compared to conventional algorithms.

Map-based Millimeter-Wave Channel Models: An Overview, Hybrid Modeling, Data, and Learning

Compared to the current wireless communication systems, millimeter wave (mm-Wave) promises a wide range of spectrum. As viable alternatives to existing mm-Wave channel models, various map-based channel models with different modeling methods have been widely discussed. Map-based channel models are based on a ray-tracing algorithm and include realistic channel parameters in a given map. Such parameters enable researchers to accurately evaluate novel technologies in the mm-Wave range. Diverse map-based modeling methods result in different modeling objectives, including the characteristics of channel parameters and different complexities of the modeling procedure. This article outlines an overview of map-based mm-Wave channel models and proposes a concept of how they can be utilized to integrate a hardware testbed/sounder with a software testbed/sounder. In addition, we categorize map-based channel parameters and provide guidelines for hybrid modeling. Next, we share the measurement data and the map-based channel parameters with the public. Lastly, we evaluate a machine learning-based beam selection algorithm through the shared database. We expect that the offered guidelines and the shared database will enable researchers to readily design a map-based channel model.

Ultrareliable and Low-Latency Communication Techniques for Tactile Internet Services

This paper presents novel ultrareliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) techniques for URLLC services, such as Tactile Internet services. Among typical use-cases of URLLC services are tele-operation, immersive virtual reality, cooperative automated driving, and so on. In such URLLC services, new kinds of traffic such as haptic information including kinesthetic information and tactile information need to be delivered in addition to high-quality video and audio traffic in traditional multimedia services. Further, such a variety of traffic has various characteristics in terms of packet sizes and data rates with a variety of requirements of latency and reliability. Furthermore, some traffic may occur in a sporadic manner but require reliable delivery of packets of medium to large sizes within a low latency, which is not supported by current state-of-the-art wireless communication systems and is very challenging for future wireless communication systems. Thus, to meet such a variety of tight traffic requirements in a wireless communication system, novel technologies from the physical layer to the network layer need to be devised. In this paper, some novel physical layer technologies such as waveform multiplexing, multiple access scheme, channel code design, synchronization, and full-duplex transmission for spectrally-efficient URLLC are introduced. In addition, a novel performance evaluation approach, which combines a ray-tracing tool and system-level simulation, is suggested for evaluating the performance of the proposed schemes. Simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed schemes providing realistic URLLC services in realistic geographical environments, which encourages further efforts to substantiate the proposed work.

A Comparative Study of Analog/Digital Self-Interference Cancellation for Full Duplex Radios

Self-interference (SI) is the main obstacle to full-duplex radios. To overcome the SI, researchers have proposed several analog and digital domain self-interference cancellation (SIC) techniques. How well the digital cancellation works depends on the results of analog cancellation. Therefore, to analyze overall SIC performance, one should do so in an integrated manner. In this paper, we build a simulator that can analyze the performance of analog and digital SIC techniques. Through this simulator, we can analyze the overall SIC performance within various system parameters such as the resolution of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and/or nonlinearity of a power amplifier (PA). With our simulator, we expect that configurations and tuning algorithms of an active analog canceller can be optimized before real hardware implementation.

Communication System Design and Analysis for Asynchronous Molecular Timing Channels

Two new asynchronous modulation techniques for molecular timing (MT) channels are proposed. One based on modulating information on the time between two consecutive releases of indistinguishable information particles, and one based on using distinguishable particles. For comparison, we consider the synchronized modulation scheme where information is encoded in the time of release and decoded from the time of arrival of particles. We show that all three modulation techniques result in a system that can be modeled as an additive noise channel, and we derive the expression for the probability density function of the noise. Next, we focus on binary communication and derive the associated optimal detection rules for each modulation. Since the noise associated with these modulations has an infinite variance, geometric power is used as a measure for the noise power, and we derive an expression for the geometric SNR (G-SNR) for each modulation scheme. Numerical evaluations indicate that for these systems the bit error rate (BER) is constant at a given G-SNR, similar to the relation between BER and SNR in additive Gaussian noise channels. We also demonstrate that the asynchronous modulation based on two distinguishable particles can achieve a BER performance close to the synchronized modulation scheme.

Spatial Modulation for Molecular Communication

In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient spatial modulation based molecular communication (SM-MC) scheme, in which a transmitted symbol is composed of two parts, i.e., a space derived symbol and a concentration derived symbol. The space symbol is transmitted by embedding the information into the index of a single activated transmitter nanomachine. The concentration symbol is drawn according to the conventional concentration shift keying (CSK) constellation. Befitting from a single active transmitter during each symbol transmission period, SM-MC can avoid the inter-link interference problem existing in the current multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) MC schemes, which hence enables low-complexity symbol detection and performance improvement. Specifically, in our low-complexity scheme, the space symbol is first detected by energy comparison, and then the concentration symbol is detected by the equal gain combining assisted CSK demodulation. In this paper, we analyze the symbol error rate (SER) of the SM-MC and its special case, namely the space shift keying based MC (SSK-MC), where only space symbol is transmitted and no CSK modulation is invoked. Finally, the analytical results are validated by computer simulations, and our studies demonstrate that both the SM-MC and SSK-MC are capable of achieving better SER performance than the conventional MIMO-MC and single-input single-output MC (SISO-MC) when the same symbol rate is assumed.

V2X Downlink Coverage Analysis with a Realistic Urban Vehicular Model

As the realization of vehicular communication such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) or vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) is imperative for the autonomous driving cars, the understanding of realistic vehicle-to-everything (V2X) models is needed. While previous research has mostly targeted vehicular models in which vehicles are randomly distributed and the variable of carrier frequency was not considered, a more realistic analysis of the V2X model is proposed in this paper. We use a one-dimensional (1D) Poisson cluster process (PCP) to model a realistic scenario of vehicle distribution in a perpendicular cross line road urban area and compare the coverage results with the previous research that distributed vehicles randomly by Poisson Point Process (PPP). Moreover, we incorporate the effect of different carrier frequencies, mmWave and sub-6 GHz, to our analysis by altering the antenna radiation pattern accordingly. Results indicated that while the effect of clustering led to lower outage, using mmWave had even more significance in leading to lower outage. Moreover, line-of-sight (LoS) interference links are shown to be more dominant in lowering the outage than the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) links even though they are less in number. The analytical results give insight into designing and analyzing the urban V2X channels, and are verified by actual urban area three-dimensional (3D) ray-tracing simulation.

Opportunism in Dynamic Spectrum Access for 5G: A Concept and Its Application to Duplexing

With the envisioned massive Internet-of-Things (IoT) era, one of the challenges for 5G wireless systems will be handling the unprecedented spectrum crunch. A potential solution has emerged in the form of spectrum sharing, which deviates from a monopolistic spectrum usage system. This article investigates the medium access control (MAC) as a means of increasing the viability of the spectrum sharing technique. We first quantify the opportunity of spectrum access in a probabilistic manner, a method referred to as opportunity probability (OP). Based on the OP framework, we propose a random MAC algorithm in which the access of a node is randomly determined with its own OP value. As a possible application of our OP based random MAC, we propose a hybrid half duplex (HD)/full duplex (FD) communication where each pair decides the duplexing mode according to the OP values of the two pair nodes. This approach fits well with the spectrum sharing system since it enables a flexible operation for the spectrum access according to the spectrum usage level. From the numerical analysis, we validate the feasibility and verify the performance enhancements by implementing an FPGA based real-time prototype. Measurements and numerical results confirm that the proposed architecture can achieve up to 4 times higher system throughput than conventional LTE-TDD (time division duplex) systems.

RF Lens-Embedded Antenna Array for mmWave MIMO: Design and Performance

The requirement of high data-rate in the fifth generation wireless systems (5G) calls for the ultimate utilization of the wide bandwidth in the mmWave frequency band. Researchers seeking to compensate for mmWave's high path loss and to achieve both gain and directivity have proposed that mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems make use of beamforming systems. Hybrid beamforming in mmWave demonstrates promising performance in achieving high gain and directivity by using phase shifters at the analog processing block. What remains a problem, however, is the actual implementation of mmWave beamforming systems; to fabricate such a system is costly and complex. With the aim of reducing such cost and complexity, this article presents actual prototypes of the lens antenna as an effective device to be used in the future 5G mmWave hybrid beamforming systems. Using a lens as a passive phase shifter enables beamforming without the heavy network of active phase shifters, while gain and directivity are achieved by the energy-focusing property of the lens. Proposed in this article are two types of lens antennas, one for static and the other for mobile usage. Their performance is evaluated using measurements and simulation data along with link-level analysis via a software defined radio (SDR) platform. Results show the promising potential of the lens antenna for its high gain and directivity, and its improved beam-switching feasibility compared to when a lens is not used. System-level evaluations reveal the significant throughput enhancement in both real indoor and outdoor environments. Moreover, the lens antenna's design issues are also discussed by evaluating different lens sizes.

Molecular Signal Modeling of a Partially Counting Absorbing Spherical Receiver

To communicate at the nanoscale, researchers have proposed molecular communication as an energy-efficient solution. The drawback to this solution is that the histogram of the molecules' hitting times, which constitute the molecular signal at the receiver, has a heavy tail. Reducing the effects of this heavy tail, inter-symbol interference (ISI), has been the focus of most prior research. In this paper, a novel way of decreasing the ISI by defining a counting region on the spherical receiver's surface facing towards the transmitter node is proposed. The beneficial effect comes from the fact that the molecules received from the back lobe of the receiver are more likely to be coming through longer paths that contribute to ISI. In order to justify this idea, the joint distribution of the arrival molecules with respect to angle and time is derived. Using this distribution, the channel model function is approximated for the proposed system, i.e., the partially counting absorbing spherical receiver. After validating the channel model function, the characteristics of the molecular signal are investigated and improved performance is presented. Moreover, the optimal counting region in terms of bit error rate is found analytically.

Relationship between Cross-Polarization Discrimination (XPD) and Spatial Correlation in Indoor Small-Cell MIMO Systems

In this letter, we present a correlated channel model for a dual-polarization antenna to omnidirectional antennas in indoor small-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In an indoor environment, we confirm that the cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) in the direction of angle-of-departure can be represented as the spatial correlation of the MIMO channel. We also evaluate a dual-polarization antenna-based MIMO channel model and a spatially correlated channel model using a three-dimensional (3D) ray-tracing simulator. Furthermore, we provide the equivalent distance between adjacent antennas according to the XPD, providing insights into designing a dual-polarization antenna and its arrays.

On the Feasibility of Full-duplex Large-scale MIMO Cellular Systems

This paper concerns the feasibility of full-duplex large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) cellular systems. We first propose a pilot transmission scheme and assess its performance, specifically the ergodic sum-rate. The proposed scheme -- the simultaneous pilot transmission (SPT) -- enables to reduce pilot overhead, where the pilot overhead depends on the number of antennas at the base station (BS), since the self-interference channel has to be estimated. We consider two multicell scenarios-- cooperative and non-cooperative multicell systems--, and derive the analytic model of the ergodic achievable sum-rate for cell-boundary users. The model is derived by applying a simple linear filter, i.e., matched filter or zero-forcing filter, to the BS. In the analytic model, we also consider large-scale fading, pilot contamination, transmitter noise and receiver distortion. Exploiting the derived analytic model, the feasibility of full-duplex large-scale MIMO systems is shown with respect to system parameters. In the end, we confirm that our analytic model matches well the numerical results and the SPT has advantages over other pilot transmission methods.

MOL-Eye: A New Metric for the Performance Evaluation of a Molecular Signal

Inspired by the eye diagram in classical radio frequency (RF) based communications, the MOL-Eye diagram is proposed for the performance evaluation of a molecular signal within the context of molecular communication. Utilizing various features of this diagram, three new metrics for the performance evaluation of a molecular signal, namely the maximum eye height, standard deviation of received molecules, and counting SNR (CSNR) are introduced. The applicability of these performance metrics in this domain is verified by comparing the performance of binary concentration shift keying (BCSK) and BCSK with consecutive power adjustment (BCSK-CPA) modulation techniques in a vessel-like environment with laminar flow. The results show that, in addition to classical performance metrics such as bit-error rate and channel capacity, these performance metrics can also be used to show the advantage of an efficient modulation technique over a simpler one.
