R&D Efforts in Cherenkov Imaging Technologies for Particle Identification in Future Experiments

Cherenkov imaging detectors will continue to play a central role for particle identification in future particle and nuclear physics experiments. Growing demands on momentum coverage, timing precision, radiation tolerance, and sustainability have driven extensive R&D in detector concepts, radiator materials, and photon sensors. This article reviews recent efforts, focusing on experiments leading advances in sensor technology, radiator materials, and the exploitation of Cherenkov photon timing to push PID limits, while highlighting synergies across experiments in addressing common challenges.

Particle Identification with the ePIC detector at the EIC

The ePIC detector is being designed as a general-purpose detector to deliver the full physics program of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) in BNL USA. Particle Identification (PID) plays a crucial role in the EIC physics program. Over a wide phase-space the PID systems provide excellent hadron identification required for the EIC physics program. Additionally, the PID systems have to provide low momentum electron-pion separation to support the calorimeter performance. The ePIC experiment employs different advanced PID technologies to reach the physics goals. The compact set-up the collider and the presence of high magnetic field of the experimental solenoid impose numerous technical challenges. In this article we will describe the PID subsystems of the ePIC detector, with a specific emphasis on high momentum PID system using RICH technology. The article will report about the studies performed with SiPMs as the photo-sensor candidate for forward RICH detector. Also, studies made with novel LAPPD detectors and standard MCP- PMTs chosen as baseline photo-sensor candidates for the backward RICH and barrel DIRC system respectively. This article will include a discussion on the simulation studies made with stand-alone Geant4 simulations and official ePIC software framework.

Characterization of LAPPD timing at CERN PS testbeam

Large Area Picosecond PhotoDetectors (LAPPDs) are photosensors based on microchannel plate technology with about 400 cm$^2$ sensitive area. The external readout plane of a capacitively coupled LAPPD can be segmented into pads providing a spatial resolution down to 1 mm scale. The LAPPD signals have about 0.5 ns risetime followed by a slightly longer falltime and their amplitude reaches a few dozens of mV per single photoelectron. In this article, we report on the measurement of the time resolution of an LAPPD prototype in a test beam exercise at CERN PS. Most of the previous measurements of LAPPD time resolution had been performed with laser sources. In this article we report time resolution measurements obtained through the detection of Cherenkov radiation emitted by high energy hadrons. Our approach has been demonstrated capable of measuring time resolutions as fine as 25-30 ps. The available prototype had performance limitations, which prevented us from applying the optimal high voltage setting. The measured time resolution for single photoelectrons is about 80 ps r.m.s.
