On the simplicity of de Sitter correlators

Motivated by recent evidence that equal-time correlators can be simpler than the corresponding wavefunction coefficients, we study de Sitter correlators in conformally coupled $ϕ^3$ theory directly. By inverting the momentum-space dressing rules, we derive a time integral representation for generic graphs and show that its natural building blocks are flat space correlators of fields and conjugate momenta. Among other things, this representation gives two useful recursive structures, one obtained by collapsing leaves and one by fusing lower-point graphs. In this representation several simplifications also become immediate. Graphs with an odd number of conjugate momentum insertions vanish, explaining the weight drop of odd-point correlators, melonic insertions collapse to lower complexity graphs and the leading behavior near total and partial-energy singularities is manifest, closely paralleling the flat space story. We then take a first step beyond the integrand and study integrated answers. For tree level families, in particular chains and stars, we find that the symbol alphabet of the correlator is smaller than that of the corresponding wavefunction, with the missing letters admitting a natural interpretation in terms of tubing data. These results support a correlator-first viewpoint for de Sitter observables: part of their simplicity appears to be intrinsic to the correlator itself, rather than inherited indirectly from the wavefunction.

Cosmological Dressing Rules

The basic observables in cosmology are known as in-in correlators. Recent calculations have revealed that in-in correlators in four dimensional de Sitter space exhibit hidden simplicity stemming from a close relation to scattering amplitudes in flat space. In this paper we explain how to make this property manifest by dressing flat space Feynman diagrams with certain auxiliary propagators. These dressing rules are derived for conformally coupled and massless scalar theories and we show that they reproduce the same infrared divergences predicted by the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism.

Cosmological Correlator Discontinuities from Scattering Amplitudes

Recent theoretical work has revealed that basic observables of quantum field theory in de Sitter space, known as in-in or cosmological correlators, exhibit surprisingly simple mathematical structure reminiscent of scattering amplitudes in flat space. For many theories, this simplicity can be made manifest using a set of ``cosmological dressing rules'' which uplift flat-space Feynman diagrams to in-in correlators in de Sitter space by attaching auxiliary propagators to the interaction vertices. In this paper, we show that discontinuities of cosmological correlators with respect to internal energy variables can be obtained by applying auxiliary propagators to unitarity cuts of flat space Feynman diagrams. Moreover, discontinuities with respect to external energy variables can be obtained by cutting auxiliary propagators attached to Feynman diagrams. This observation in turn implies highly non-trivial constraints on cosmological correlators in the form of simple sum rules. We illustrate these ideas in a number of examples at tree-level and 1-loop for conformally coupled scalar theories, although they hold more generally. Finally, we show how to reconstruct cosmological correlators from their discontinuities using dispersion relations, providing a powerful new approach to computing cosmological observables by systematically reconstructing them from data uplifted from flat space.

On in-in correlators for spinning theories and their shadow formulation

In-in correlators are the basic observables in cosmology and are traditionally computed using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism. In this paper we revisit this formalism for photons, gluons, and gravitons coupled to scalars in four dimensional de Sitter space and provide a novel treatment of boundary gauge-fixing of the underlying path integral. We also derive effective actions in Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space whose Feynman rules compute the in-in correlators of these theories in de Sitter space, generalising the shadow formalism recently obtained for scalar theories. We illustrate this formalism in a number of examples at tree-level and 1-loop, demonstrating its relative simplicity compared to other approaches. Moreover, we initiate the study of color/kinematics duality and the double copy for in-in correlators using dressing rules which uplift flat space Feynman diagrams to de Sitter space.

Revisiting Logarithmic Correction to Five Dimensional BPS Black Hole Entropy

We compute logarithmic correction to five dimensional BPS black hole entropy using finite temperature black hole geometry and find perfect agreement with the microscopic results and macroscopic computations based on zero temperature near horizon geometry. We also reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking term for zero temperature black hole entropy from the corresponding term for finite temperature black hole.

Analytic Results for Loop-Level Momentum Space Witten Diagrams

This paper presents an evaluation of the wave function coefficients for conformally coupled scalars at both one and two-loop levels at leading order in the coupling constant, in momentum space. We take cues from time-dependent interactions in flat spacetime and under suitable approximations, these can also be used to study the wave function coefficients for general cosmologies. We make use of recursion relations developed in arxiv:\{1709.02813\} to regularize certain bulk-point integrals and express the wave function coefficients in a form that simplifies the loop integrals. We utilize hard-cutoff regularization to regularize the loop integrals and further provide a discussion on their renormalization. Our results can also be analytically continued to obtain answers for transition amplitudes in AdS.

Light-cone actions and correlators of self-dual theories in AdS$_4$

Self-dual Yang-Mills and Einstein gravity in Euclidean AdS$_4$ are useful toy models because they can be described by simple scalar Lagrangians exhibiting a new manifestation of the colour/kinematics duality, as recently shown by two of the authors. In this paper, we clarify how the self-dual sectors fit into the full theories. In particular, we explicitly construct the light-cone action for Yang-Mills theory and Einstein gravity in AdS$_4$ in terms of positive and negative helicity fields, where we are able to pinpoint the self-dual sector as expected. We then show that the boundary correlators of these theories take a remarkably simple form in terms of Feynman diagrams in half of flat space, acted on by certain differential operators. We also analyse their soft limits and show that they exhibit Weinberg-like soft factors, where the soft pole which appears in scattering amplitudes is replaced by a derivative with respect to the energy.

Soft Limits of Gluon and Graviton Correlators in Anti-de Sitter Space

We derive formulae for the soft limit of tree-level gluon and graviton correlators in Anti-de Sitter space, which arise from Feynman diagrams encoding the Weinberg soft theorems in flat space. Other types of diagrams can also contribute to the soft limit at leading order in the soft momentum, but have a different pole structure. We derive these results at four points using explicit formulae recently obtained from the cosmological bootstrap and double copy, and extend them to any multiplicity using bootstrap techniques in Mellin-momentum space.

Loops, Recursions, and Soft Limits for Fermionic Correlators in (A)dS

Study of correlation functions in AdS/CFT and in-in correlators in de Sitter space often requires the computation of Witten diagrams. Due to the complexity of evaluating radial integrals for these correlators, several indirect approaches have been developed to simplify computations. However, in momentum space, these methods have been limited to fields with integer spin. In this paper, we formulate tools for evaluating Witten diagrams with spin$-\frac12$ fields in momentum space and discuss where they differ from the corresponding integer-spin analysis. We formulate our tools explicitly for massless fermions and present how appropriate Weight shifting operators with respect to the external kinematics can be used to obtain the generalization to fermions with integer mass. We apply these tools to loop Witten diagrams and also discuss their use for evaluating in-in correlators in dS. In cases where we can evaluate the loop integrals, we find their transcendentality is lower than the corresponding scalar field results. Further, we classify the nature of IR divergences encountered for interacting massive scalars and fermions. We also prove a novel Weinberg-like soft theorem for gauge fields coupled to matter in AdS and show that the universal terms in the leading soft factor are sensitive to the spin of the matter field. These generalize the recently discovered soft theorems for pure Yang-Mills to Yang-Mills with matter.

Supersymmetric Index for Small Black Holes

Supersymmetric elementary string states in the compactified heterotic string theory are described by small black holes that have zero area event horizon. In this paper we compute the supersymmetric index of such elementary string states using gravitational path integral. The dominant contribution to the path integral comes from an Euclidean rotating black hole solution of the supergravity theory with a finite area event horizon, but the logarithm of the index, computed from the saddle point, vanishes. Nevertheless we show that the solution is singular on certain subspaces of the horizon where higher derivative corrections can be important, and once the higher derivative corrections are taken into account the solution could yield a finite result for the logarithm of the index whose form agrees with the microscopic results up to an overall numerical constant. While the numerical constant is not determined in our analysis, we show that it is independent of the details of the compactification and even the number of non-compact dimensions, in agreement with the microscopic results.

The Subtle Simplicity of Cosmological Correlators

We investigate cosmological correlators for conformally coupled $ϕ^4$ theory in four-dimensional de Sitter space. These \textit{in-in} correlators differ from scattering amplitudes for massless particles in flat space due to the spacelike structure of future infinity in de Sitter. They also require a regularization which preserves de Sitter-invariance, which makes the flat space limit subtle to define at loop-level. Nevertheless we find that up to two loops, the \textit{in-in} correlators are structurally simpler than the wave function and have the same transcendentality as flat space amplitudes. Moreover, we show that their loop integrands can be recast in terms of flat space integrands and can be derived from a novel recursion relation.

Logarithmic Correction to BPS Black Hole Entropy from Supersymmetric Index at Finite Temperature

It has been argued by Iliesiu, Kologlu and Turiaci in arXiv:2107.09062 that one can compute the supersymmetric index of black holes using black hole geometry carrying finite temperature but a specific complex angular velocity. We follow their prescription to compute the logarithmic correction to the entropy of BPS states in four dimensions, defined as the log of the index of supersymmetric black holes, and find perfect agreement with the previous results for the same quantity computed using the near horizon $AdS_2 \times S^2$ geometry of zero temperature black holes. Besides giving an independent computation of supersymmetric black hole entropy, this analysis also provides a test of the procedure used previously for computing logarithmic corrections to Schwarzschild and other non-extremal black hole entropy.

Generalized BMS algebra in higher even dimensions

We revisit the status of asymptotic symmetries in higher even dimensions and propose a definition of superrotation charge beyond linearized gravity. We prove that there is a well-defined spacetime action of the superrotation charge on the space of asymptotically flat geometries. Additionally, we demonstrate that the Ward identity associated with superrotation charges follows from the subleading soft graviton theorem, which is a universal constraint (in $d> 4$) along with the leading soft graviton theorem.

Recovering information in an asymptotically flat spacetime in quantum gravity

As an extension of arXiv:\{2002.02448, 2008.10740\} we present a physical protocol that a set of observers can use to detect a pure state in the bulk when they are spread across a small cut near $\mathcal{I}^+_-$ in flat spacetime. The protocol involves the modification of a bulk state using simple unitary operators and measurements of the energy of the state. The states that we study are constructed by acting with low energy operators on a vacuum state such that a perturbative analysis is valid. We restrict ourselves to $3+1$ dimensional spacetimes and only consider massless excitations. From this analysis, the principle of holography of information becomes manifest in the case of asymptotically flat spacetime.

Holography from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation

In a theory of quantum gravity, states can be represented as wavefunctionals that assign an amplitude to a given configuration of matter fields and the metric on a spatial slice. These wavefunctionals must obey a set of constraints as a consequence of the diffeomorphism invariance of the theory, the most important of which is known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We study these constraints perturbatively by expanding them to leading nontrivial order in Newton's constant about a background AdS spacetime. We show that, even within perturbation theory, any wavefunctional that solves these constraints must have specific correlations between a component of the metric at infinity and energetic excitations of matter fields or transverse-traceless gravitons. These correlations disallow strictly localized excitations. We prove perturbatively that two states or two density matrices that coincide at the boundary for an infinitesimal interval of time must coincide everywhere in the bulk. This analysis establishes a perturbative version of holography for theories of gravity coupled to matter in AdS.

The Asymptotic Structure of Gravity in Higher Even Dimensions

We investigate the notion of asymptotic symmetries in classical gravity in higher even dimensions, with $D = 6$ space-time dimensions as the prototype. Unlike in four dimensions, certain non-linearities persist which necessitates the complete non-linear analysis we undertake. We show that the free data is parametrized by a pair of symmetric trace-free tensors at future (past) null infinity. This involves a redefinition of the radiative field. We define a symplectic structure generating the radiative phase space at ${\cal I}^{\pm}$ with appropriate boundary conditions which are preserved by the action of supertranslations. We derive the charge associated to super-translation vector fields and this charge matches with that derived using the equations of motion in the full non-linear theory. We elaborate on the precise relationship between the super-translation charge, the Bondi mass aspect and the "gravitational memory" in six space-time dimensions, thus providing the first example of an infrared triangle in non-linear gravity beyond four dimensions.

A physical protocol for observers near the boundary to obtain bulk information in quantum gravity

We consider a set of observers who live near the boundary of global AdS, and are allowed to act only with simple low-energy unitaries and make measurements in a small interval of time. The observers are not allowed to leave the near-boundary region. We describe a physical protocol that nevertheless allows these observers to obtain detailed information about the bulk state. This protocol utilizes the leading gravitational back-reaction of a bulk excitation on the metric, and also relies on the entanglement-structure of the vacuum. For low-energy states, we show how the near-boundary observers can use this protocol to completely identify the bulk state. We explain why the protocol fails completely in theories without gravity, including non-gravitational gauge theories. This provides perturbative evidence for the claim that one of the signatures of holography -- the fact that information about the bulk is also available near the boundary -- is already visible in the low-energy theory of gravity.

On loop celestial amplitudes for gauge theory and gravity

Scattering amplitudes of massless particles in Minkowski space can be expressed in a conformal basis by Mellin transforming the momentum space amplitudes to correlation functions on the celestial sphere at null infinity. In this paper, we study celestial amplitudes of loop level gluons and gravitons. We focus on the rational amplitudes that carry all-plus and single-minus external helicities. Because these amplitudes are finite, they provide a concrete example of celestial amplitudes of Yang- Mills and gravity theory beyond tree level. We give explicit examples of four and five point functions and comment on higher point amplitudes.
