Quantifying entanglement in terms of an operational way

Quantifying entanglement is one of the most important tasks in the entanglement theory. In this paper, we establish entanglement monotones in terms of an operational approach, which is closely connected with the state conversion from pure states to the objective state by the local operations and classical communications (LOCC). It is shown that any good entanglement quantifier defined on pure states can induce an entanglement monotone for all density matrices. We especially show that our entanglement monotone is the maximal one among all that have the same form for pure states. In some particular cases, our proposed entanglement monotones turned to be equivalent to the convex roof construction, which hence gains an operational meaning. Some examples are given to demonstrate the different cases.

The best approximation of an objective state with a given set of quantum states

Approximating a quantum state by the convex mixing of some given states has strong experimental significance and provides potential applications in quantum resource theory. Here we find a closed form of the minimal distance in the sense of l_2 norm between a given d-dimensional objective quantum state and the state convexly mixed by those restricted in any given (mixed-) state set. In particular, we present the minimal number of the states in the given set to achieve the optimal distance. The validity of our closed solution is further verified numerically by several randomly generated quantum states.

Quantum acceleration by an ancillary system in non-Markovian environments

We study the effect of an ancillary system on the quantum speed limit time in different non-Markovian environments. Through employing an ancillary system coupled with the quantum system of interest via hopping interaction and investigating the cases that both the quantum system and ancillary system interact with their independent/common environment, and the case that only the system of interest interacts with the environment, we find that the quantum speed limit time will become shorter with enhancing the interaction between the system and environment and show periodic oscillation phenomena along with the hopping interaction between the quantum system and ancillary system increasing. The results indicate that the hopping interaction with the ancillary system and the structure of environment determine the degree of which the evolution of the quantum system can be accelerated.

Margolus-Levitin speed limit across quantum to classical regimes based on trace distance

The classical version of Mandelstam-Tamm speed limit based on the Wigner function in phase space is reported by B. Shanahan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 070401 (2018)]. In this paper, the Margolus-Levitin speed limit across the quantum-to-classical transition is given in phase space based on the trace distance. The Margolus-Levitin speed limit is set by the Schatten L1 norm of the generator of time dependent evolution for both the quantum and classical domains. As an example, the time-dependent harmonic oscillator is considered to illustrate the result.

Resource speed limits: Maximal rate of resource variation

Recent advances in quantum resource theories have been driven by the fact that many quantum information protocols make use of different facets of the same physical features, e.g. entanglement, coherence, etc. Resource theories formalise the role of these important physical features in a given protocol. One question that remains open until now is: How quickly can a resource be generated or degraded? Using the toolkit of quantum speed limits we construct bounds on the minimum time required for a given resource to change by a fixed increment, which might be thought of as the power of said resource, i.e., rate of resource variation. We show that the derived bounds are tight by considering several examples. Finally, we discuss some applications of our results, which include bounds on thermodynamic power, generalised resource power, and estimating the coupling strength with the environment.

Quantum speed limit based on the bound of Bures angle

In this paper, we investigate the unified bound of quantum speed limit time in open systems based on the modified Bures angle. This bound is applied to the damped Jaynes-Cummings model and the dephasing model, and the analytical quantum speed limit time is obtained for both models. As an example, the maximum coherent qubit state with white noise is chosen as the initial states for the damped Jaynes-Cummings model. It is found that the quantum speed limit time in both the non-Markovian and the Markovian regimes can be decreased by the white noise compared with the pure state. In addition, for the dephasing model, we find that the quantum speed limit time is not only related to the coherence of initial state and non-Markovianity, but also dependent on the population of initial excited state.

Quantifying coherence in terms of the pure-state coherence

Quantifying quantum coherence is a key task in the resource theory of coherence. Here we establish a good coherence monotone in terms of a state conversion process, which automatically endows the coherence monotone with an operational meaning. We show that any state can be produced from some input pure states via the corresponding incoherent channels. It is especially found that the coherence of a given state can be well characterized by the least coherence of the input pure states, so a coherence monotone is established by only effectively quantifying the input pure states. In particular, we show that our proposed coherence monotone is the supremum of all the coherence monotones that give the same coherence for any given pure state. Considering the convexity, we prove that our proposed coherence measure is a subset of the coherence measure based on the convex roof construction. As an application, we give a concrete expression of our coherence measure by employing the geometric coherence of a pure state. We also give a thorough analysis on the states of qubit and finally obtain series of analytic coherence measures.

Measurement-induced nonlocality in arbitrary dimensions in terms of the inverse approximate joint diagonalization

Here we focus on the measurement induced nonlocality and present a redefinition in terms of the skew information subject to a broken observable. It is shown that the obtained quantity possesses an obvious operational meaning, can tackle the noncontractivity of the measurement induced nonlocality and has analytic expressions for many quantum states. Most importantly, an inverse approximate joint diagonalization algorithm, due to its simplicity, high efficiency, stability, and state independence, is presented to provide almost analytic expressions for any quantum state, which can also shed light on other aspects in physics.

Quantum thermal transistor based on the qubit-qutrit coupling

A quantum thermal transistor is designed by the strong coupling between one qubit and one qutrit which are in contact with three heat baths with different temperatures. The thermal behavior is analyzed based on the master equation by both the numerical and the approximately analytic methods. It is shown that the thermal transistor, as a three-terminal device, allows a weak modulation heat current (at the modulation terminal) to switch on/off and effectively modulate the heat current between the other two terminals. In particular, the weak modulation heat current can induce the strong heat current between the other two terminals with the multiple-region amplification of heat current. Furthermore, the heat currents are quite robust to the temperature (current) fluctuation at the lower-temperature terminal within certain range of temperature, so it can behave as a heat current stabilizer.

Multifunctional quantum thermal device utilizing three qubits

Quantum thermal devices which can manage heat as their electronic analogues for the electronic currents have attracted increasing attention. Here a three-terminal quantum thermal device is designed by three coupling qubits interacting with three heat baths with different temperatures. Based on the steady-state behavior solved from the dynamics of this system, it is demonstrated that such a device integrates multiple interesting thermodynamic functions. It can serve as a heat current transistor to use the weak heat current at one terminal to effectively amplify the currents through the other two terminals, to continuously modulate them ranging in a large amplitude, and even to switch on/off the heat currents. It is also found that the three currents are not sensitive to the fluctuation of the temperature at the low temperature terminal, so it can behave as a thermal stabilizer. In addition, we can utilize one terminal temperature to ideally turn off the heat current at any one terminal and to allow the heat currents through the other two terminals, so it can be used as a thermal valve. Finally, we illustrate that this thermal device can control the heat currents to flow unidirectionally, so it has the function as a thermal rectifier.

Creation of superposition of arbitrary states encoded in two three-dimensional cavities

The principle of superposition is a key ingredient for quantum mechanics. A recent work [M. Oszmaniec et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 110403 (2016)] has shown that a quantum adder that deterministically generates a superposition of two unknown states is forbidden. Here we propose a probabilistic approach for creating a superposition state of two arbitrary states encoded in two three-dimensional cavities. Our implementation is based on a three-level superconducting transmon qubit dispersively coupled to two cavities. Numerical simulations show that high-fidelity generation of the superposition of two coherent states is feasible with current circuit QED technology. Our method also works for other physical systems such as other types of superconducting qubits, natural atoms, quantum dots, and nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers.

Quantum speed limit for a mixed initial state

A unified bound on the quantum speed limit is obtained for open quantum systems with the mixed initial state by utilizing the function of relative purity proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 060409 (2018)]. As applications, it is found that the quantum speed limit bound for the damped Jaynes-Cumming model is determined by the competition among the non-Markovianity, the population of initial excited state and the initial-state coherence, which shows that the population of initial excited state and the coherence of initial state can sharp the quantum speed limit despite that the non-Markovian effects can accelerate the evolution of open quantum system. For the dephasing model, a simple factorization law with the initial-state coherence shows that the quantum speed limit is only governed by the competition between the non-Markovianity and the coherence of the initial state.

Non-Markovianity in a collision model with environmental block

We present an extended collision model to simulate the dynamics of an open quantum system. In our model, the unit to represent the environment is, instead of a single particle, a block which consists of a number of environment particles. The introduced blocks enable us to study the effects of different strategies of system-environment interactions and states of the blocks on the non-Markovianities. We demonstrate our idea in the Gaussian channels of an all-optical system and derive a necessary and sufficient condition of non-Markovianity for such channels. Moreover, we show the equivalence of our criterion to the non-Markovian quantum jump in the simulation of the pure damping process of a single-mode field. We also show that the non-Markovianity of the channel working in the strategy that the system collides with environmental particles in each block in a certain order will be affected by the size of the block and the embedded entanglement and the effects of heating and squeezing the vacuum environmental state will quantitatively enhance the non-Markovianity.

The precision of parameter estimation for dephasing model under squeezed reservoir

We study the precision of parameter estimation for dephasing model under squeezed environment. We analytically calculate the dephasing factor $γ(t)$ and obtain the analytic quantum Fisher information (QFI) for the amplitude parameter $α$ and the phase parameter $ϕ$. It is shown that the QFI for the amplitude parameter $α$ is invariant in the whole process, while the QFI for the phase parameter $ϕ$ strongly depends on the reservoir squeezing. It is shown that the QFI can be enhanced for appropriate squeeze parameters $r$ and $θ$. Finally, we also investigate the effect of temperature on the QFI.

Local quantum uncertainty guarantees the measurement precision for two coupled two-level systems in non-Markovian environment

Quantum Fisher information (QFI) is an important feature for the precision of quantum parameter estimation based on the quantum Cramér-Rao inequality. When the quantum state satisfies the von Neumann-Landau equation, the local quantum uncertainty (LQU), as a kind of quantum correlation, present in a bipartite mixed state guarantees a lower bound on QFI in the optimal phase estimation protocol [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 240402]. However, in the open quantum systems, there is not an explicit relation between LQU and QFI generally. In this paper, we study the relation between LQU and QFI in open systems which is composed of two interacting two-level systems coupled to independent non-Markovian environments with the entangled initial state embedded by a phase parameter $θ$. The analytical calculations show that the QFI does't depend on the phase parameter $θ$, and its decay can be restrained through enhancing the coupling strength or non-Markovianity. Meanwhile, the LQU is related to the phase parameter $θ$ and shows plentiful phenomena. In particular, we find that the LQU can well bound the QFI when the coupling between the two systems is switched off or the initial state is Bell state.

Resource Theory of Total Quantum Coherence

Quantum coherence is an essential feature of quantum mechanics and is an important physical resource in quantum information. Recently, the resource theory of quantum coherence has been established parallel with that of entanglement. In the resource theory, a resource can be well defined if given three ingredients: the free states, the resource, the (restricted) free operations. In this paper, we study the resource theory of coherence in a different light, that is, we consider the total coherence defined by the basis-free coherence maximized among all potential basis. We define the distillable total coherence and the total coherence cost and in both the asymptotic regime and the single-copy regime show the reversible transformation between a state with certain total coherence and the state with the unit reference total coherence. Extensively, we demonstrate that the total coherence can also be completely converted to the total correlation with the equal amount by the free operations. We also provide the alternative operational meanings of the total coherence, respectively, based on the entanglement and the total correlation in a different way.

Enabling the self-contained refrigerator to work beyond its limits by filtering the reservoir

In this paper, we study the quantum self-contained refrigerator [N. Linden, S. Popescu and P. Skrzypczyk, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{105}, 130401 (2010)] in the strong internal coupling regime with engineered reservoirs. We find that if some modes of the three thermal reservoirs can be properly filtered out, the efficiency and the working domain of the refrigerator can be improved in contrast to the those in the weak internal coupling regime, which indicates one advantage of the strong internal coupling. In addition, we find that the background natural vacuum reservoir could cause the filtered refrigerator to stop working and the background natural thermal reservoir could greatly reduce the cooling efficiency.
