On two-dimensional steady compactly supported Euler flows with constant vorticity

In this paper, we study the two-dimensional steady compactly supported incompressible Euler equations with free boundaries. We consider flows with constant vorticity that are perturbations of annular equilibria, in contrast to the laminar flows that predominate in the existing literature on steady water waves. More precisely, we analyze three distinct classes of steady Euler flows with compact support, which correspond, respectively, to partially overdetermined, two-phase overdetermined, and (fully) overdetermined elliptic free-boundary problems. Our main contributions are threefold. For each class, we first prove a flexibility result-the existence of nontrivial admissible domains-by combining shape derivatives with local bifurcation theory. Second, we establish the corresponding rigidity results. Third, we apply the implicit function theorem to show that the standard annular flows are stable under small perturbations of the Neumann boundary condition. These results provide new perspectives on the theory of overdetermined elliptic problems.

Symmetry breaking for the complex sine-Gordon equation

We consider the existence of vortex solutions to the complex sine-Gordon II (CSG2) equation, which can be viewed as an analogy of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation. Using the nontrivial kernels $η_{\pm}$ of the linearized CSG2 equation at the standard degree-2 vortex solution $Ψ_2$, we show that it bifurcating to a one-parameter family of symmetry-breaking solutions $Ψ_{2,α}$. Explicit formulas of these solutions are also available, from which we propose a new bilinear system for this equation. Our method can be generalized to higher degree case. Nondegenracy and stability of degree-1 solution are also proved. Finally, we formally discuss the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction procedure for the multivortex solutions of the CSG2 and GL equation.

Mixed Torsion on Right Triangles and the Pólya--Szegő Monotonicity Problem for Regular Polygons

Motivated by the polygonal Pólya--Szegő conjecture for torsional rigidity, we study two monotonicity problems for torsional rigidity. The first concerns a mixed torsion problem on fixed-area right triangles, with a Dirichlet condition on one leg and Neumann conditions on the other leg and on the hypotenuse. We prove that the mixed torsional rigidity strictly increases as the ratio of the Neumann leg to the Dirichlet leg increases. The proof uses a Hadamard shape derivative, a Pohozaev-type identity, and a monotonicity result for the mixed torsion function. We also prove a similar result for the mixed ground state of Laplacian. The second concerns regular polygons. If \(P_N\) denotes the regular \(N\)-gon of area \(π\), we prove, by a purely analytic Schwarz--Christoffel/Bergman analytic-content argument, that \[ T^D(P_{N+1})>T^D(P_N),\qquad N\ge3, \] where \(T^D\) is the Dirichlet torsional rigidity. We also obtain the asymptotic expansion \[ T^D(P_N)=\fracπ{8}-\frac{πζ(3)}{N^3} +\frac{π^5}{45N^4}+O(N^{-5}). \]

Liouville theorems for $p$-Laplacian equations in convex cones without finite-energy condition

We study the anisotropic Finsler $p$-Laplacian equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} &-Δ^{H}_{p}u=f(u) \quad\,\,\, &{\rm{in}} \,\, \mathcal{C}, &{\bf{a}}(\nabla u)\cdot ν=0 \quad\,\,\, &{\rm{on}} \,\, \partial\mathcal{C}, \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} where $N\geq3$, $1<p<N$, $\mathcal{C}\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{N}$ is an open convex cone and $Δ^{H}_{p}$ is the anisotropic Finsler $p$-Laplacian operator. If $f(u)$ is nonnegative and subcritical, we prove that every bounded nonnegative solution in $\mathcal{C}$ is identically zero. In particular, for $f(u)=u^{q}$ with $0<q<p^*-1$, we establish a pointwise decay estimate in $\mathcal{C}$ via the doubling argument and blowing-up method and prove that all nonnegative solutions must be zero without the boundedness assumption. Our results are the subcritical counterpart of the classification result for the critical case in \cite{CFR}, and extend the Liouville type theorems in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ for the standard $p$-Laplacian in \cite{SZ} and for the anisotropic $p$-Laplacian in \cite{CFV, CHN} to general convex cones $\mathcal{C}$. In the critical case $f(u)=u^{p^*-1} $ and typical case $H(ξ)=|ξ|$, for $\frac{N+1}{3}<p<N$, we classified the positive solutions of the critical $p$-Laplacian equation in convex cones $\mathcal{C}$ without finite-energy assumption. This extends the classification result of \cite{Ou} in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ to general convex cones $\mathcal{C}$, and removes the finite-energy assumption in \cite{CFR} in the typical case $H(ξ)=|ξ|$.

A selection principle for 2D steady Euler flows via the vanishing viscosity limit

The 2D Euler system, which governs inviscid incompressible fluid flow, can admit infinitely many steady solutions in a given domain with slip boundary conditions. To select physical classical solutions, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limits of the steady Navier-Stokes system. The vanishing viscosity limits in periodic strips or bounded connected domains are completely characterized, even when strong boundary layers may appear. More precisely, we show that the only vanishing viscosity limits in a bounded connected domain are flows with constant vorticity. The significance of this result is that the approximating Navier-Stokes solutions are not required to have nested closed streamlines, an essential assumption in the century-old Prandtl-Batchelor theorem. For flows in an infinitely long strip, if the viscous velocity (but not the pressure) is periodic in the strip direction, we show that the only vanishing viscosity limits are constant flows, Couette flows, and Poiseuille flows. The proof relies on a delicate analysis of the streamlines for both viscous and inviscid flows, in which a key observation is that the set of chaotic streamlines for the Euler flow is null with respect to two-dimensional Lebesgue measure. The second result depends not only on the first but also on a powerful rigidity theorem that any non-shear steady classical Euler flow in a periodic strip must have closed streamlines, established via an analysis of streamlines and a novel total curvature estimate.

Nonlinear Neumann boundary problems for $n$-Laplacian Liouville equation on a half space

In this paper, for general $n\geq2$, we classify solutions to $n$-Laplacian Liouville equation with positive nonlinear Neumann boundary condition on the half-space $\mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}$. Under the positive nonlinear Neumann boundary condition, our result extend the classification result for the second order Liouville equation in \cite{Li} from $n=2$ to general $n\geq2$, and also extend the classification result for critical $p$-Laplacian equation in \cite{Zhou} from $p<n$ to $p=n$.

On the forward self-similar solutions to the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

We establish the global existence of forward self-similar solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for any divergence-free initial velocity that is homogeneous of degree $-1$ and locally Hölder continuous. This result requires no smallness assumption on the initial data. In sharp contrast to the three-dimensional case, where $(-1)$-homogeneous vector fields are locally square-integrable, the major difficulty for the 2D problem is the criticality in the sense that the initial kinetic energy is locally infinite at the origin, and the initial vorticity fails to be locally integrable, so that the classical local energy estimates are not available. Our key ideas are to decompose the solution into a linear part solving the heat equation and a finite-energy perturbation part, and to exploit a kind of inherent cancellation relation between the linear part and the perturbation part. These, together with suitable choices of multipliers, enable us to control the interaction terms and to establish the $H^1$-estimates for the perturbation part. Furthermore, we can get an optimal pointwise estimate via investigating the corresponding Leray equations in weighted Sobolev spaces. This gives the faster decay of the perturbation part at infinity and compactness, which play important roles in proving the existence of global-in-time self-similar solutions.

Uniqueness of critical points of the second Neumann eigenfunctions on triangles

This paper investigates the second Neumann eigenfunction $u$ of a planar triangle $T$. In a recent paper by Judge and Mondal [Ann. Math., 2022], it was shown that $u$ has no critical points in the interior of $T$. In this paper, we show that $u$ has at most one non-vertex critical point and that $u$ is monotone in a certain direction in $T$. More precisely, when $T$ is not equilateral, we show that $u$ vanishes at some vertex if and only if $T$ is superequilateral, and that $u$ has a non-vertex critical point if and only if $T$ is acute and not superequilateral. These results confirm both the original theorem and Conjecture 13.6 of Judge and Mondal [Ann. Math., 2020]. We also resolve the objective of Polymath 7 (research thread 1), namely, that the extrema of $u$ are attained only at the endpoints of the longest side. In addition, we settle a conjecture of Siudeja [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 2016] on the ordering of mixed Dirichlet--Neumann Laplacian eigenvalues for triangles. Our proofs combine the continuity method, eigenvalue inequalities, the maximum principle, and the moving plane method.

Stability of Solitary Capillary-Gravity Water Waves in Three Dimensions

This paper establishes the conditional orbital stability of fully localized solitary waves for the three-dimensional capillary-gravity water wave problem in finite depth under strong surface tension. The waves, constructed via a non-variational Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction in [26], are not energy minimizers and thus require a direct stability analysis. We adapt the Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss framework within Mielke's approach to handle the mismatch between well-posedness and energy spaces. The proof relies on spectral analysis of the linearized dynamics and careful treatment of the Hamiltonian structure defined by the energy and momentum functionals.

A Generalization of the Sphere Covering Inequality

The Sphere Covering Inequality was introduced in \cite{GM} (\emph{Invent. Math.}, 2018) as a sharp geometric inequality that provides a lower bound for the total area of two distinct surfaces of Gaussian curvature 1. These surfaces are assumed to be conformal to the Euclidean unit disk and share the same conformal factor along the boundary. In this paper, we establish a quantitative generalization that relaxes the boundary matching condition by allowing the conformal factors to differ by a constant \( c \ge 0 \) on the boundary. This refinement reveals a new stability-type structure underlying the inequality. Our results show that the Sphere Covering Inequality is stable with respect to perturbations in the boundary data and provide a precise quantitative description of how the total-area bound varies under such perturbations. The generalized inequality provides new analytic and geometric tools for the study of elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearities, conformal geometry, and related problems in mathematical physics.

On the existence of self-similar solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations in high dimensions

We prove that the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with any given $(-3)$-homogeneous, locally Lipschitz external force on $\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\}$, $4\leq n\leq 16$, have at least one $(-1)$-homogeneous solution which is scale-invariant and regular away from the origin. The global uniqueness of the self-similar solution is obtained as long as the external force is small. The key observation is to exploit a nice relation between the radial component of the velocity and the total head pressure under the self-similarity assumption. It plays an essential role in establishing the energy estimates. If the external force has only the nonnegative radial component, we can prove the existence of $(-1)$-homogeneous solutions for all $n\geq 4$. The regularity of the solution follows from integral estimates of the positive part of the total head pressure, which is due to the maximum principle and a ``dimension-reduction" effect arising from the self-similarity.

From KP-I Lump Solution to Travelling wave of 3D Gravity Capillary Water wave problem

In this paper, we study the three-dimensional gravity-capillary water wave problem involving an irrotational, perfect fluid with gravity and surface tension. We focus on steady waves propagating uniformly in one direction. Assuming constant wave speed and water depth, we analyze the fluid's velocity potential and boundary conditions. Using the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP)-I equation as a simplified model, we show that, within a specific parameter range, the problem admits a fully localized solitary-wave solution resemble lump type solutions of the KP-I equation.

Non-radial solutions for the critical quasi-linear Hénon equation involving $p$-Laplacian in $\R^N$

In this paper, we investigate the following $D^{1,p}$-critical quasi-linear Hénon equation involving $p$-Laplacian \begin{equation*}\label{00} \left\{ \begin{aligned} &-Δ_p u=|x|^αu^{p_\al^*-1}, & x\in \R^N, \\ &u>0, & x\in \R^N, \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} where $N\geq2$, $1 0$. By carefully studying the linearized problem and applying the approximation method and bifurcation theory, we prove that, when the parameter $\al$ takes the critical values $\al(k):=\frac{p\sqrt{(N+p-2)^2+4(k-1)(p-1)(k+N-1)}-p(N+p-2)}{2(p-1)}$ for $k\geq2$, the above quasi-linear Hénon equation admits non-radial solutions $u$ such that $u\sim |x|^{-\frac{N-p}{p-1}}$ and $|\nabla u|\sim |x|^{-\frac{N-1}{p-1}}$ at $\infty$. One should note that, $α(k)=2(k-1)$ for $k\geq2$ when $p=2$. Our results successfully extend the classical work of F. Gladiali, M. Grossi, and S. L. N. Neves in \cite{GGN} concerning the Laplace operator (i.e., the case $p=2$) to the more general setting of the nonlinear $p$-Laplace operator ($1<p<N$). We overcome a series of crucial difficulties, including the nonlinear feature of the $p$-Laplacian $Δ_p$, the absence of Kelvin type transforms and the lack of the Green integral representation formula.

Interactions between Wind and Water Waves near Circular Flows

This manuscript concerns the dynamical interactions between wind and water waves, which are characterized through two-phase free interface problems for the Euler equations. We provide a comprehensive derivation on the linearized problems of general two-phase flows. Then, we study the instability issues of perturbing waves around circular steady solutions, and we demonstrate a semi-circle result on the possible locations of unstable modes. We also present necessary conditions and sufficient ones for the instability of wind-perturbing water waves near Taylor-Couette flows.

Least total curvature solutions to steady Euler system and monotone solutions to semilinear equations in a strip

This paper focuses on establishing the existence of a class of steady solutions, termed least total curvature solutions, to the incompressible Euler system in a strip. The solutions obtained in this paper complement the least total curvature solutions already known. Our approach employs a minimization procedure to identify a monotone heteroclinic solution for a conveniently chosen semilinear elliptic PDE. This method also enables us to construct positive and monotone (and consequently stable) solutions to semilinear elliptic PDEs with non-convex superlevel sets in a strip domain. This can be regarded as a negative answer to a generalized problem raised in [27].

Self-Similar Solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes Equations in a two-dimensional sector

This paper is concerned with self-similar solutions of the steady Navier-Stokes system in a two-dimensional sector with the no-slip boundary condition. We give necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the angle of the sector and the flux to guarantee the existence of self-similar solutions of a given type. We also investigate the uniqueness and non-uniqueness of flows with a given type, which not only give rigorous justifications for some statements in \cite{Rosenhead40} but also show that some numerical computations in \cite{Rosenhead40} may not be precise. The non-uniqueness result is a new phenomenon for these flows. As a consequence of the classification of self-similar solutions in the half-space, we characterize the leading order term of the steady Navier-Stokes system in an aperture domain when the flux is small. The main approach is to study the ODE system governing self-similar solutions, where the detailed properties of both complete and incomplete elliptic functions have been investigated.

Anisotropic Finsler $N$-Laplacian Liouville equation in convex cones

We consider the anisotropic Finsler $N$-Laplacian Liouville equation \[-Δ^{H}_{N}u=e^u \qquad {\rm{in}}\,\, \mathcal{C},\] where $N\geq2$, $\mathcal{C}\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{N}$ is an open convex cone including $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, the half space $\mathbb{R}^{N}_{+}$ and $\frac{1}{2^{m}}$-space $\mathbb{R}^{N}_{2^{-m}}:=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{N}\mid x_{1},\cdots,x_{m}>0\}$ ($m=1,\cdots,N$), and the anisotropic Finsler $N$-Laplacian $Δ^{H}_{N}$ is induced by a positively homogeneous function $H(x)$ of degree $1$. All solutions to the Finsler $N$-Laplacian Liouville equation with finite mass are completely classified. In particular, if $H(ξ)=|ξ|$, then the Finsler $N$-Laplacian $Δ^{H}_{N}$ reduces to the regular $N$-Laplacian $Δ_N$. Our result is a counterpart in the limiting case $p=N$ of the classification results in \cite{CFR} for the critical anisotropic $p$-Laplacian equations with $1<p<N$ in convex cones, and also extends the classification results in \cite{CK,CL,CW,CL2,E} for Liouville equation in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ to general convex cones. In our proof, besides exploiting the anisotropic isoperimetric inequality inside convex cones, we have also proved and applied the radial Poincaré type inequality (Lemma \ref{A1}), which are key ingredients in the proof and of their own importance and interests.

Toda lattice and Riemann type minimal surfaces

Toda lattice and minimal surfaces are related to each other through Allen-Cahn equation. In view of the structure of the solutions of the Toda lattice, we find new balancing configuration using techniques of integrable systems. This allows us to construct new singly periodic minimal surfaces. The genus of these minimal surfaces equals $j(j+1)/2-1$. They are natural generalization of the Riemann minimal surfaces, which have genus zero.
