Search for $Λ$-$\barΛ $ oscillation in $J/ψ\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ decay

Using $(10087\pm44)\times 10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ decays collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for baryon number violation via $Λ-\barΛ$ oscillation in the decay $J/ψ\to Λ\barΛ$. No evidence for $Λ-\barΛ$ oscillation is observed. The upper limit on the time-integrated probability of $Λ-\barΛ$ oscillation is estimated to be $1.4\times 10^{-6}$, corresponding to an oscillation parameter less than $2.1\times 10^{-18}~\mathrm{GeV}$ at $90\%$ confidence level.

Backdooring Vision-Language Models with Out-Of-Distribution Data

The emergence of Vision-Language Models (VLMs) represents a significant advancement in integrating computer vision with Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate detailed text descriptions from visual inputs. Despite their growing importance, the security of VLMs, particularly against backdoor attacks, is under explored. Moreover, prior works often assume attackers have access to the original training data, which is often unrealistic. In this paper, we address a more practical and challenging scenario where attackers must rely solely on Out-Of-Distribution (OOD) data. We introduce VLOOD (Backdooring Vision-Language Models with Out-of-Distribution Data), a novel approach with two key contributions: (1) demonstrating backdoor attacks on VLMs in complex image-to-text tasks while minimizing degradation of the original semantics under poisoned inputs, and (2) proposing innovative techniques for backdoor injection without requiring any access to the original training data. Our evaluation on image captioning and visual question answering (VQA) tasks confirms the effectiveness of VLOOD, revealing a critical security vulnerability in VLMs and laying the foundation for future research on securing multimodal models against sophisticated threats.

Precision measurement of the branching fraction for the decay $ψ(2S)\rightarrowτ^{+}τ^{-}$

Using $(2259.3 \pm 11.1)\times10^{6}$ $ψ(2S)$ events acquired with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of $ψ(2S)\rightarrowτ^{+}τ^{-}$ is measured with improved precision to be $\mathcal{B}_{ψ(2S)\rightarrowτ^{+}τ^{-}}=(3.240~\pm~0.023~\pm~0.081)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, which is consistent with the world average value within one standard deviation. This value, along with those for the branching fractions of the $ψ(2S)$ decaying into $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$, is in good agreement with the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining the branching fraction values with the leptonic width of the $ψ(2S)$, the total width of the $ψ(2S)$ is determined to be (287 $\pm$ 9) keV.

JUNO Sensitivity to Invisible Decay Modes of Neutrons

We explore the decay of bound neutrons into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 ν$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 ν$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector, which do not produce an observable signal. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\barν_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $τ/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $τ/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$.

Measurement of the Decay $Ξ^{0}\toΛγ$ with Entangled $Ξ^{0}\barΞ^{0}$ Pairs

In this Letter, a systematic study of the weak radiative hyperon decay $Ξ^{0}\toΛγ$ at an electron-positron collider using entangled $Ξ^{0}\barΞ^{0}$ pair events is presented. The absolute branching fraction for this decay has been measured for the first time, and is $\left(1.347 \pm 0.066_{\mathrm stat.}\pm0.054_{\mathrm syst.}\right)\times 10^{-3}$. The decay asymmetry parameter, which characterizes the effect of parity violation in the decay, is determined to be $-0.741 \pm 0.062_{\mathrm stat.}\pm 0.019_{\mathrm syst.}$. The obtained results are consistent with the world average values within the uncertainties, offering valuable insights into the underlying mechanism governing the weak radiative hyperon decays. The charge conjugation parity ($CP$) symmetries of branching fraction and decay asymmetry parameter in the decay are also studied. No statistically significant violation of charge conjugation parity symmetry is observed.

A Test System for the JUNO 20-inch PMTs Prior to Installation

The JUNO experiment requires an excellent energy resolution of 3\% at 1 MeV. To achieve this objective, a total of 20,012 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) will be deployed for JUNO, comprising 15,012 multi-channel plate (MCP) PMTs and 5,000 dynode PMTs. Currently, JUNO is in the process of detector installation, with PMTs being installed from the top to the bottom of the stainless-steel structure located in the underground experimental hall. In order to validate the functionality of the PMTs and ensure there are no malfunctions prior to installation, a test system has been established at the JUNO site, and testing is being conducted. This paper presents an overview of the test system and reports on the initial test results.

Partial wave analyses of $ψ(3686)\to p\bar{p}π^0$ and $ψ(3686)\to p\bar{p}η$

Using a sample of $(2712\pm14)\times10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform partial wave analyses of the decays $ψ(3686)\to p\bar{p}π^0$ and $ψ(3686)\to p\bar{p}η$. The branching fractions of $ψ(3686)\to p\bar{p}π^0$ and $ψ(3686)\to p\bar{p}η$ are determined to be $(133.9\pm11.2\pm2.3)\times10^{-6}$ or $(183.7\pm13.7\pm3.2)\times10^{-6}$ and $(61.5\pm6.5\pm1.1)\times10^{-6}$ or $(84.4\pm6.9\pm1.4)\times10^{-6}$, respectively, where the two solutions are caused by an ambiguous phase angle between resonant and continuum processes. Several well-established $N^*$ states are observed in the $pπ^0$ and $pη$ systems, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured. The ratio of decay widths $Γ_{N(1535)\to Nη}/Γ_{N(1535)\to Nπ}$ is determined to be $0.99\pm0.05\pm0.19$.

Measurement of the Inclusive Cross Sections of Prompt $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ Production in $e^{+}e^{-}$ Annihilation from $\sqrt{s}=3.808$ to $4.951$ GeV

The inclusive cross sections of prompt $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ production are measured at center-of-mass energies from 3.808 to 4.951 GeV. The dataset used is 22 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The results obtained are in agreement with the previous BESIII measurements of exclusive $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ production. The average values obtained for the cross sections measured in the center-of-mass energy ranges from 4.527 to 4.951 GeV for $J/ψ$ and from 4.843 to 4.951 GeV for $ψ(3686)$, where the impact of known resonances is negligible, are $14.0\pm1.7\pm3.1$ pb and $15.3\pm3.0$ pb, respectively. For $J/ψ$, the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. For $ψ(3686)$, the uncertainty is total. These values are useful for testing charmonium production models.

Reversibly Strain Engineering and Electric-Field Control of Crystal Symmetry in Multiferroic Oxides

Multiferroic oxides, such as BiFeO3, have garnered significant attention due to their coupled ferroelectric, magnetic, and elastic properties, offering exciting opportunities for multifunctional device applications. Controlling phase transitions in these materials is critical for tuning their physical properties and achieving desired functionalities. While numerous studies have focused on ferroelectric-ferroelectric transitions at rhombohedral-tetragonal morphotropic phase boundaries, far less attention has been given to the ferroelectric-antiferroelectric phase boundaries. Such systems hold promise for discovering novel physical phenomena, such as reversible phase transitions, enhanced piezoelectricity, and magnetoelectric coupling. In this work, we report a reversible antiferroelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition in La doped BiFeO3 thin films. By modulating the residual strain via film thickness, an antiferroelectric orthorhombic phase is stabilized within a ferroelectric rhombohedral phase matrix. Under an external electric field, the phase transitions reversibly between these two states. This discovery not only enriches the understanding of orthorhombic-rhombohedral morphotropic phase boundaries but also provides a potential pathway for developing magnetoelectric devices with enhanced functionality.

Search for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays $Λ_c^{+}\toΣ^0K^{+}π^{0}$ and $Λ_c^{+}\toΣ^0K^{+}π^{+}π^{-}$

Utilizing 4.5 $fb^-$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4599.53 MeV to 4698.82 MeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed hadronic decays $Λ_{c}^{+}\toΣ^{0} K^{+}π^{0}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}\toΣ^{0}K^{+}π^+π^-$ with a single-tag method. No significant signals are observed for both decays. The upper limits on the branching fractions at the $90\%$ confidence level are determined to be $5.0\times 10^{-4}$ for $Λ_{c}^{+}\toΣ^{0} K^{+}π^{0}$ and $6.5\times 10^{-4}$ for $Λ_c^{+}\toΣ^0K^{+}π^{+}π^{-}$.

Search for the FCNC charmonium decay $J/ψ\to D^0 μ^+ μ^- + \text{c.c.}$

Based on a data sample of $(10087 \pm 44) \times 10^6$ $J/ψ$ events taken with the BESIII detector, we search for the flavor-changing neutral current charmonium decay $J/ψ\to D^{0} μ^{+} μ^{-} + \text{c.c.}$. No significant signal above the background is observed, and the upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to D^{0}μ^{+}μ^{-} + \text{c.c.} ) < 1.1 \times 10^{-7}$ at the 90% confidence level. This marks the first search for a flavor-changing neutral current charmonium decay involving muons in the final state.

Search for the decay $χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.16 to 4.34 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the decay $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$ in the radiative production $e^{+}e^{-} \to γχ_{c1}(3872)$. No significant signal is observed, and the ratio for the branching fraction of $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$ to $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ$ is measured as $\mathcal{R}\equiv\frac{\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}]}{\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-} J/ψ]}<0.18$ at 90$\%$ confidence level. The upper limit on the product of the cross section $σ[e^{+}e^{-}\toγχ_{c1}(3872)]$ and the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}]$ at each center-of-mass energy is also given. These measurements favor the non-conventional charmonium nature of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state.

Search for the $e^+e^- \to ϕχ_{c1}(3872)$ process at BESIII

Based on 368.5 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at center-of-mass energies 4.914 and 4.946 GeV by the BESIII detector, the $e^+e^- \to ϕχ_{c1}(3872)$ process is searched for the first time. No significant signal is observed and the upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on the product of the Born cross section $σ(e^+e^- \to ϕχ_{c1}(3872))$ and the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^+π^- J/ψ]$ at 4.914 and 4.946 GeV are set to be 0.85 and 0.96 pb, respectively. These measurements provide useful information for the production of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ at $e^+e^-$ collider and deepen our understanding about the nature of this particle.

Potential to identify neutrino mass ordering with reactor antineutrinos at JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment under construction in South China. This paper presents an updated estimate of JUNO's sensitivity to neutrino mass ordering using the reactor antineutrinos emitted from eight nuclear reactor cores in the Taishan and Yangjiang nuclear power plants. This measurement is planned by studying the fine interference pattern caused by quasi-vacuum oscillations in the oscillated antineutrino spectrum at a baseline of 52.5~km and is completely independent of the CP violating phase and neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$. The sensitivity is obtained through a joint analysis of JUNO and Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) detectors utilizing the best available knowledge to date about the location and overburden of the JUNO experimental site, local and global nuclear reactors, JUNO and TAO detector responses, expected event rates and spectra of signals and backgrounds, and systematic uncertainties of analysis inputs. We find that a 3$σ$ median sensitivity to reject the wrong mass ordering hypothesis can be reached with an exposure to approximately 6.5 years $\times$ 26.6 GW thermal power.

Measurement of the branching fraction of $D^+ \to τ^+ν_τ$

By analyzing $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data with an integrated luminosity of 7.9~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV, the branching fraction of $D^+\toτ^+ν_τ$ is determined as $\mathcal{B}=(9.9\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.5_\mathrm{syst})\times10^{-4}$. Taking the most precise result $\mathcal{B}(D^+\toμ^+ν_μ)=(3.981\pm 0.079_\mathrm{stat}\pm0.040_\mathrm{syst})\times10^{-4}$, we determine $R_{τ/μ} = Γ(D^+\toτ^+ν_τ)/Γ(D^+\toμ^+ν_μ)= 2.49\pm0.31$, achieving a factor of two improvement in precision compared to the previous BESIII result. This measurement is in agreement with the standard model prediction of lepton flavor universality within one standard deviation.

Partial Wave Analysis of $J/ψ\rightarrow γγϕ$

Using a sample of $(10087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial-wave analysis of the decay $γγϕ$ is performed to investigate the intermediate resonances in $J/ψ\rightarrowγR, R\arγϕ$. Resonances including $f_{1}(1285)$, $η(1405)$, $f_{1}(1420)$, $f_{1}(1510)$, $f_{2}(1525)$, $X(1835)$, $f_{2}(1950)$, $f_{2}(2010)$, $f_{0}(2200)$ and $η_{c}$ have been detected with statistical significance greater than 5$σ$. The product branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrowγR, R\ar γϕ)$ are reported, and the resonance parameters of $η(1405)$ and $X(1835)$ have been precisely determined. It is more probable that $η(1405)$ and $X(1835)$ act as the first - and second - excited states of $η^{\prime}$, respectively. The observation of $η_{c}\rightarrowγϕ$ holds great significance for the in depth study of charmonium properties. No evidence of $η(1295)$, $η_{1}(1855)$ or X(2370) is found. The measured upper limits of relevant BF products do not conflict with theoretical expectations for X(2370) as a pseudoscalar glueball and $η_{1}(1855)$ as a hybrid state.

A Fast Decoding Algorithm for Generalized Reed-Solomon Codes and Alternant Codes

In this paper, it is shown that the syndromes of generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and alternant codes can be characterized in terms of inverse fast Fourier transform, regardless of code definitions. Then a fast decoding algorithm is proposed, which has a computational complexity of $O(n\log(n-k) + (n-k)\log^2(n-k))$ for all $(n,k)$ GRS codes and $(n,k)$ alternant codes. Particularly, this provides a new decoding method for Goppa codes, which is an important subclass of alternant codes. When decoding the binary Goppa code with length $8192$ and correction capability $128$, the new algorithm is nearly 10 times faster than traditional methods. The decoding algorithm is suitable for the McEliece cryptosystem, which is a candidate for post-quantum cryptography techniques.

Two-particle quantum interference in a nonlinear optical medium: a witness of timelike indistinguishability

The Hong-Ou-Mandel effect is a paradigmatic quantum phenomenon demonstrating the interference of two indistinguishable photons that are linearly coupled at a 50:50 beam splitter. Here, we transpose such a two-particle quantum interference effect to the nonlinear regime, when two single photons are impinging on a parametric down-conversion crystal. Formally, this transposition amounts to exchanging space and time variables, giving rise to an unknown form of timelike quantum interference. The two-photon component of the output state is a superposition of the incident photons being either transmitted or reborn, that is, replaced by indistinguishable substitutes due to their interaction with the nonlinear crystal. We experimentally demonstrate the suppression of the probability of detecting precisely one photon pair when the amplification gain is tuned to 2, which arises from the destructive interference between the transmitted and reborn photon pairs. This heretofore unobserved quantum manifestation of indistinguishability in time pushes nonlinear quantum interference towards a new regime with multiple photons. Hence, composing this effect with larger linear optical circuits should provide a tool to generate multimode quantum non-Gaussian states, which are essential resources for photonic quantum computers.
