Neural Approximation of Graph Topological Features

Topological features based on persistent homology capture high-order structural information so as to augment graph neural network methods. However, computing extended persistent homology summaries remains slow for large and dense graphs and can be a serious bottleneck for the learning pipeline. Inspired by recent success in neural algorithmic reasoning, we propose a novel graph neural network to estimate extended persistence diagrams (EPDs) on graphs efficiently. Our model is built on algorithmic insights, and benefits from better supervision and closer alignment with the EPD computation algorithm. We validate our method with convincing empirical results on approximating EPDs and downstream graph representation learning tasks. Our method is also efficient; on large and dense graphs, we accelerate the computation by nearly 100 times.

Antiferromagnetic fluctuations and a dominant $d_{xy}$-wave pairing symmetry in nickelate-based superconductors

Motivated by recent experimental studies on superconductivity found in nickelate-based materials, we study the temperature dependence of the spin correlation and the superconducting pairing interaction within an effective two-band Hubbard model by the quantum Monte Carlo method. Based on parameters extracted from first-principles calculations, our intensive numerical results reveal that the pairing with a $d_{xy}$-wave symmetry firmly dominates over other pairings at low temperature, which is mainly determined by the Ni 3$d$ orbital. It is also found that the effective pairing interaction is enhanced as the on-site interaction increases, demonstrating that the superconductivity is driven by strong electron-electron correlation. Even though the $(π,π)$ antiferromagnetic correlation could be enhanced by electronic interaction, there is no evidence for long-range antiferromagnetic order exhibited in nickelate-based superconductors. Moreover, our results offer possible evidence that the pure electron correlation may not account for the charge density wave state observed in nickelates.

Luminosities and energies of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken between $\sqrt{s}$=4.612 GeV and 4.946 GeV at BESIII

From December 2019 to June 2021, the BESIII experiment collected about 5.85 fb$^{-1}$ of data at center-of-mass energies between 4.61 GeV and 4.95 GeV. This is the highest collision energy BEPCII has reached so far. The accumulated $e^+e^-$ annihilation data samples are useful for studying charmonium(-like) states and charmed-hadron decays. By adopting a novel method of analyzing the production of $Λ_{c}^{+}\barΛ_{c}^{-}$ pairs in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, the center-of-mass energies are measured with a precision of $\sim$0.6 MeV. Integrated luminosities are measured with a precision of better than 1\% by analyzing the events of large-angle Bhabha scattering. These measurements provide important inputs to the analyses based on these data samples.

Missing one-loop contributions in secondary gravitational waves

We find several missing one-loop-order contributions in previous considerations about secondary gravitational waves induced at nonlinear order in cosmological perturbations. We consider a consistent perturbative expansion to third-order in cosmological perturbations, including higher-order interactions and iterative solutions ignored in the previous literature. Tensor fluctuations induced by the source with two scalar and one tensor perturbations are correlated with the first-order tensor fluctuation and thus give a one-loop-order correction to the tensor power spectrum. The missing loop correction is \textit{scale-invariant} and \textit{negative} in the superhorion region, which secondarily reduces the initial primordial tensor power spectrum prior to the horizon re-entry. Such an IR behavior is very different from the auto-spectrum of second-order induced tensor modes discussed in the previous literature and can be important for the actual gravitational wave measurements. For a sharp peak of scalar fluctuations with $A_ζ=10^{-2}$ at $k_*=10^{5}h/{\rm Mpc}$ motivated by the LIGO/Virgo events, we show that the tensor power spectrum at the cosmic microwave background scale reduces by at most 35%. Hence, the polarization B-mode might not be seen because of the reduction of the original tensor spectrum due to the secondary effect of primordial black hole formation.

Measurement of $ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛη$ and $ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛπ^0$ decays

Based on a sample of $448.1\times10^6\ ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, a study of $ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛπ^0$ and $ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛη$ is performed. Evidence of the isospin-violating decay $ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛπ^0$ is found for the first time with a statistical significance of $3.7σ$, the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛπ^0)$ is measured to be $(1.42\pm0.39\pm0.59)\times10^{-6}$, and its corresponding upper limit is determined to be $2.47\times10^{-6}$ at 90\% confidence level. A partial wave analysis of $ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛη$ shows that the peak around $Λη$ invariant mass threshold favors a $Λ^*$ resonance with mass and width in agreement with the $Λ(1670)$. The branching fraction of the $ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛη$ is measured to be $(2.34\pm0.18\pm0.52)\times10^{-5}$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Deep Anomaly Detection and Search via Reinforcement Learning

Semi-supervised Anomaly Detection (AD) is a kind of data mining task which aims at learning features from partially-labeled datasets to help detect outliers. In this paper, we classify existing semi-supervised AD methods into two categories: unsupervised-based and supervised-based, and point out that most of them suffer from insufficient exploitation of labeled data and under-exploration of unlabeled data. To tackle these problems, we propose Deep Anomaly Detection and Search (DADS), which applies Reinforcement Learning (RL) to balance exploitation and exploration. During the training process, the agent searches for possible anomalies with hierarchically-structured datasets and uses the searched anomalies to enhance performance, which in essence draws lessons from the idea of ensemble learning. Experimentally, we compare DADS with several state-of-the-art methods in the settings of leveraging labeled known anomalies to detect both other known anomalies and unknown anomalies. Results show that DADS can efficiently and precisely search anomalies from unlabeled data and learn from them, thus achieving good performance.

Measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo suppressed decay $Λ^{+}_{c}\to pη^{\prime}$

The singly Cabibbo suppressed decay $Λ^{+}_{c}\to pη^{\prime}$ is measured using 4.5 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. Evidence for $Λ^{+}_{c}\to pη^{\prime}$ with a statistical significance of $3.6σ$ is reported with a double-tag approach. The $Λ^{+}_{c}\to pη^{\prime}$ absolute branching fraction is determined to be $(5.62^{+2.46}_{-2.04} \pm 0.26)\times 10^{-4}$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Our result is consistent with the branching fraction obtained by the Belle collaboration within the uncertainty of $1σ$.

Learning Probabilistic Topological Representations Using Discrete Morse Theory

Accurate delineation of fine-scale structures is a very important yet challenging problem. Existing methods use topological information as an additional training loss, but are ultimately making pixel-wise predictions. In this paper, we propose the first deep learning based method to learn topological/structural representations. We use discrete Morse theory and persistent homology to construct an one-parameter family of structures as the topological/structural representation space. Furthermore, we learn a probabilistic model that can perform inference tasks in such a topological/structural representation space. Our method generates true structures rather than pixel-maps, leading to better topological integrity in automatic segmentation tasks. It also facilitates semi-automatic interactive annotation/proofreading via the sampling of structures and structure-aware uncertainty.

ECO-TR: Efficient Correspondences Finding Via Coarse-to-Fine Refinement

Modeling sparse and dense image matching within a unified functional correspondence model has recently attracted increasing research interest. However, existing efforts mainly focus on improving matching accuracy while ignoring its efficiency, which is crucial for realworld applications. In this paper, we propose an efficient structure named Efficient Correspondence Transformer (ECO-TR) by finding correspondences in a coarse-to-fine manner, which significantly improves the efficiency of functional correspondence model. To achieve this, multiple transformer blocks are stage-wisely connected to gradually refine the predicted coordinates upon a shared multi-scale feature extraction network. Given a pair of images and for arbitrary query coordinates, all the correspondences are predicted within a single feed-forward pass. We further propose an adaptive query-clustering strategy and an uncertainty-based outlier detection module to cooperate with the proposed framework for faster and better predictions. Experiments on various sparse and dense matching tasks demonstrate the superiority of our method in both efficiency and effectiveness against existing state-of-the-arts.

Measurement of the $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-J/ψ$ cross section in the vicinity of 3.872 GeV

We report a measurement of the cross section for the process $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-J/ψ$ around the $X(3872)$ mass in search for the direct formation of $e^+e^-\to X(3872)$ through the two-photon fusion process. No enhancement of the cross section is observed at the $X(3872)$ peak and an upper limit on the product of electronic width and branching fraction of $X(3872)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ$ is determined to be $Γ_{ee}\times\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ)<7.5\times10^{-3}\,\text{eV}$ at $90\,\%$ confidence level under an assumption of total width of $1.19\pm0.21$ MeV. This is an improvement of a factor of about $17$ compared to the previous limit. Furthermore, using the latest result of $\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ)$, an upper limit on the electronic width $Γ_{ee}$ of $X(3872)$ is obtained to be $<0.32\,\text{eV}$ at the $90\,\%$ confidence level.

Precise Measurements of Decay Parameters and $CP$ Asymmetry with Entangled $Λ-\barΛ$ Pairs

Based on 10 billion $J/ψ$ events collected at the BESIII experiment, a search for $CP$ violation in $Λ$ decay is performed in the difference between $CP$-odd decay parameters $α_{-}$ for $Λ\rightarrow pπ^-$ and $α_{+}$ for $\barΛ\rightarrow \bar{p}π^+$ by using the process $e^+e^- \to J/ψ\rightarrow Λ\barΛ$. With a five-dimensional fit to the full angular distributions of the daughter baryon, the most precise values for the decay parameters are determined to be $α_{-} = 0.7519 \pm 0.0036 \pm 0.0024$ and $α_{+} = -0.7559 \pm 0.0036 \pm 0.0030$, respectively. The $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ averaged value of the decay parameter is extracted to be $α_{\rm{avg}} = 0.7542 \pm 0.0010 \pm 0.0024$ with unprecedented accuracy. The $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}=(α_{-}+α_{+})/(α_{-}-α_{+})$ is determined to be $-0.0025 \pm 0.0046 \pm 0.0012$, which is one of the most precise measurements in the baryon sector. The reported results for the decay parameter will play an important role in the studies of the polarizations and $CP$ violations for the strange, charmed and beauty baryons.

Improved measurement of the strong-phase difference $δ_D^{Kπ}$ in quantum-correlated $D\bar{D}$ decays

The decay $D\to K^-π^+$ is studied in a sample of quantum-correlated $D\bar{D}$ pairs, based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93\,fb$^{-1}$ collected at the $ψ(3770)$ resonance by the BESIII experiment. The asymmetry between $C\!P$-odd and $C\!P$-even eigenstate decays into $K^-π^+$ is determined to be ${\cal A}_{Kπ} = 0.132 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.007$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement is an update of an earlier study exploiting additional tagging modes, including several decay modes involving a $K^0_L$ meson. The branching fractions of the $K^0_L$ modes are determined as input to the analysis in a manner that is independent of any strong phase uncertainty. Using the predominantly $C\!P$-even tag $D\to π^+π^-π^0$ and the ensemble of $C\!P$-odd eigenstate tags, the observable ${\cal A}_{Kπ}^{πππ^0}$ is measured to be $0.130 \pm 0.012 \pm 0.008$. The two asymmetries are sensitive to $r_D^{Kπ} \cos δ_D^{Kπ}$, where $r_D^{Kπ}$ and $δ_D^{Kπ}$ are the ratio of amplitudes and phase difference, respectively, between the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed and Cabibbo-favoured decays. In addition, events containing $D \to K^-π^+$ tagged by $D \to K^0_{S,L} π^+π^-$ are studied in bins of phase space of the three-body decays. This analysis has sensitivity to both $r_D^{Kπ} \cos δ_D^{Kπ}$ and $r_D^{Kπ} \sin δ_D^{Kπ}$. A fit to ${\cal A}_{Kπ}$, ${\cal A}_{Kπ}^{πππ^0}$ and the phase-space distribution of the $D \to K^0_{S,L} π^+π^-$ tags yields $δ_D^{Kπ}= \left( 187.6 {^{+8.9}_{-9.7}}{^{+5.4}_{-6.4}} \right)$ degrees, where external constraints are applied for $r_D^{Kπ}$ and other relevant parameters. This is the most precise measurement of $δ_D^{Kπ}$ in quantum-correlated $D\bar{D}$ decays.

Induced gravitational waves from statistically anisotropic scalar perturbations

Scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) are attracting growing attention for probing extremely short-scale scalar perturbations via gravitational wave measurements. In this paper, we investigate the SIGWs from statistically anisotropic scalar perturbations, which are motivated in inflationary scenarios in the presence of, e.g., a vector field. While the ensemble average of the SIGW energy spectrum is isotropic for the standard statistically isotropic scalar perturbations, the statistical anisotropy in the source introduces the multipole moments of the differential SIGW energy spectrum. We consider quadrupole anisotropy in the scalar power spectrum and show that the SIGW spectrum has anisotropies up to $\ell=4$. We present generic formulas of the multipole moments and then apply them to the delta-function-like and log-normal source spectra. We find analytic expressions for the former case and show that the infrared scalings of the multipole moments are the same as the isotropic SIGWs. Interestingly, the monopole has an additional local minimum in the high-$k$ tail, a key feature to distinguish from the isotropic SIGWs. The latter log-normal case is analytic for the narrow-peak source, and we perform the numerical calculation for the broad peak. As one expects, the multipole moments become broader with increasing source width. Our results are helpful to test the isotropy of primordial density perturbations at extremely small scales through SIGWs.

Observation of $η_c(2S) \to 3(π^+π^-)$ and measurements of $χ_{cJ} \to 3(π^+π^-)$ in $ψ(3686)$ radiative transitions

The hadronic decay $η_c(2S) \to 3(π^+π^-)$ is observed with a statistical significance of 9.3 standard deviations using $(448.1\pm2.9)\times10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The measured mass and width of $η_c(2S)$ are $(3643.4 \pm 2.3 (\rm stat.) \pm 4.4 (\rm syst.))$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(19.8 \pm 3.9 (\rm stat.) \pm 3.1 (\rm syst.))$ MeV, respectively, which are consistent with the world average values within two standard deviations. The product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}[ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S)]\times\mathcal{B}[η_c(2S)\to3(π^+π^-)]$ is measured to be $(9.2 \pm 1.0 (\rm stat.) \pm 0.9 (\rm syst.))\times10^{-6}$. Using $\mathcal{B}[ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S)]=(7.0^{+3.4}_{-2.5})\times10^{-4}$, we obtain $\mathcal{B}[η_c(2S) \to 3(π^+π^-)] = (1.31 \pm 0.15 (\rm stat.) \pm 0.13 (\rm syst.)(^{+0.64}_{-0.47}) (\rm extr))\times10^{-2}$, where the third uncertainty is from $\mathcal{B}[ψ(3686) \to γη_c(2S)]$. We also measure the $χ_{cJ} \to 3(π^+π^-)$ ($J=0, 1, 2$) decays via $ψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ}$ transitions. The branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}[χ_{c0} \to 3(π^+π^-)] = (2.080\pm0.006 (\rm stat.)\pm0.068 (\rm syst.))\times10^{-2}$, $\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1} \to 3(π^+π^-)] = (1.092\pm0.004 (\rm stat.)\pm0.035 (\rm syst.))\times10^{-2}$, and $\mathcal{B}[χ_{c2} \to 3(π^+π^-)] = (1.565\pm0.005 (\rm stat.)\pm0.048 (\rm syst.))\times10^{-2}$.

Measurement of the $C\!P$-even fraction of $D^{0}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$

A measurement of the $C\!P$-even fraction of the decay $D^{0}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ is performed with a quantum-correlated $ψ(3770)\to D\bar{D}$ data sample collected by the BESIII experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 $\textrm{fb}^{-1}$. Using a combination of $C\!P$ eigenstates, $D \to π^+π^-π^0$ and $D \to K_{S,L}^0π^{+}π^{-}$ as tagging modes, the $C\!P$-even fraction is measured to be $F_{+}^{4π} = 0.735 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.005$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the most precise determination of this quantity to date. It provides valuable model-independent input for the measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ with $B^\pm\to D K^\pm$ decays, and for time-dependent studies of $C\!P$ violation and mixing in the $D^{0}$-$\bar{D}^{0}$ system.

Overlapping Domain Decomposition Preconditioner for Integral Equations

The discretization of certain integral equations, e.g., the first-kind Fredholm equation of Laplace's equation, leads to symmetric positive-definite linear systems, where the coefficient matrix is dense and often ill-conditioned. We introduce a new preconditioner based on a novel overlapping domain decomposition that can be combined efficiently with fast direct solvers. Empirically, we observe that the condition number of the preconditioned system is $O(1)$, independent of the problem size. Our domain decomposition is designed so that we can construct approximate factorizations of the subproblems efficiently. In particular, we apply the recursive skeletonization algorithm to subproblems associated with every subdomain. We present numerical results on problem sizes up to $16\,384^2$ in 2D and $256^3$ in 3D, which were solved in less than 16 hours and three hours, respectively, on an Intel Xeon Platinum 8280M.

Deterministic manipulation of multi-state polarization switching in multiferroic thin films

Deterministically controllable multi-state polarizations in ferroelectric materials are promising for the application of next-generation non-volatile multi-state memory devices. However, the achievement of multi-state polarizations has been inhibited by the challenge of selective control of switching pathways. Here we report an approach to selectively control 71° ferroelastic and 180° ferroelectric switching paths by combining the out-of-plane electric field and in-plane trailing field in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films with periodically ordered 71° domain wall. Four-state polarization states can be deterministically achieved and reversibly controlled through precisely selecting different switching paths. Our studies reveal the ability to obtain multiple polarization states for the realization of multi-state memories and magnetoelectric coupling based devices.
