Direct observation of geometric and sliding ferroelectricity in an amphidynamic crystal

Sliding ferroelectricity is a recently observed polarity existing in two-dimensional materials. However, due to their weak polarization and poor electrical insulation in these materials, all available experimental evidence till now are indirect, with most based on transport properties in the nanoscale or piezoresponse force microscopy. We report the direct observation of sliding ferroelectricity, using a high-quality amphidynamic single crystal, (15-Crown-5)Cd$_3$Cl$_6$, which possesses a large band-gap and so allows direct measurement of P-E hysteresis. This coordination polymer is a van der Waals material, which is composed of inorganic stators and organic rotators as measured using XRD and NMR characterisation. From DFT calculations, we find that after the freezing of rotators an electric dipole is generated in each layer driven by the geometric mechanism, meanwhile a comparable ferroelectric polarization originates from the interlayer sliding. The net polarization of these two components can be directly measured and manipulated. Our finding provides insight into low-dimensional ferroelectrics, especially the controlling of synchronous dynamics of rotating molecules and sliding layers in solids.

Unpolarized generalized parton distributions of light and heavy vector mesons

We study the leading-twist unpolarized generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of light and heavy vector mesons, i.e., the $ρ$, $J/ψ$ and $Υ$, at zero skewness. An ansatz incorporating the zero mode contribution is introduced to modify the light front overlap representation of GPDs. The leading Fock-state light front wave functions (LF-LFWFs) of vector mesons from DS-BSEs approach are then employed to study the meson GPDs. The light front spatial distribution of valence quarks within vector mesons is then studied with the impact parameter dependent GPD (IPD GPD). We also investigate the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors, which are the first and second Mellin moments of the GPDs. The light-cone mass radius of $ρ$ is determined to be 0.30 fm, close to a recent NJL model prediction 0.32fm. For $J/ψ$ and $Υ$, they are predicted to be 0.151fm and 0.089 fm respectively.

Two spectral extremal results for graphs with given order and rank

The spectral radius and rank of a graph are defined to be the spectral radius and rank of its adjacency matrix, respectively. It is an important problem in spectral extremal graph theory to determine the extremal graph that has the maximum or minimum spectral radius over certain families of graphs. Monsalve and Rada [Extremal spectral radius of graphs with rank 4, Linear Algebra Appl. 609 (2021) 1-11] obtained the extremal graphs with maximum and minimum spectral radii among all graphs with order n and rank 4. In this paper, we first determine the extremal graph which attains the maximum spectral radius among all graphs with any given order n and rank r, and further determine the extremal graph which attains the minimum spectral radius among all graphs with order n and rank 5.

An In-Depth Comparative Analysis of Cloud Block Storage Workloads: Findings and Implications

Cloud block storage systems support diverse types of applications in modern cloud services. Characterizing their I/O activities is critical for guiding better system designs and optimizations. In this paper, we present an in-depth comparative analysis of production cloud block storage workloads through the block-level I/O traces of billions of I/O requests collected from two production systems, Alibaba Cloud and Tencent Cloud Block Storage. We study their characteristics of load intensities, spatial patterns, and temporal patterns. We also compare the cloud block storage workloads with the notable public block-level I/O workloads from the enterprise data centers at Microsoft Research Cambridge, and identify the commonalities and differences of the three sources of traces. To this end, we provide 6 findings through the high-level analysis and 16 findings through the detailed analysis on load intensity, spatial patterns, and temporal patterns. We discuss the implications of our findings on load balancing, cache efficiency, and storage cluster management in cloud block storage systems.

D4: a Chinese Dialogue Dataset for Depression-Diagnosis-Oriented Chat

In a depression-diagnosis-directed clinical session, doctors initiate a conversation with ample emotional support that guides the patients to expose their symptoms based on clinical diagnosis criteria. Such a dialogue system is distinguished from existing single-purpose human-machine dialog systems, as it combines task-oriented and chit-chats with uniqueness in dialogue topics and procedures. However, due to the social stigma associated with mental illness, the dialogue data related to depression consultation and diagnosis are rarely disclosed. Based on clinical depression diagnostic criteria ICD-11 and DSM-5, we designed a 3-phase procedure to construct D$^4$: a Chinese Dialogue Dataset for Depression-Diagnosis-Oriented Chat, which simulates the dialogue between doctors and patients during the diagnosis of depression, including diagnosis results and symptom summary given by professional psychiatrists for each conversation. Upon the newly-constructed dataset, four tasks mirroring the depression diagnosis process are established: response generation, topic prediction, dialog summary, and severity classification of depressive episode and suicide risk. Multi-scale evaluation results demonstrate that a more empathy-driven and diagnostic-accurate consultation dialogue system trained on our dataset can be achieved compared to rule-based bots.

Transverse momentum distributions of valence quark in light and heavy vector mesons

We study the leading-twist time-reversal even transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) of light and heavy vector mesons, i.e., the $ρ$, $J/ψ$ and $Υ$. We employ the leading Fock-state light front wave functions (LF-LFWFs) of $ρ$ and $J/ψ$ from our recent study, and supplement with $Υ$'s LF-LFWFs. These LF-LFWFs are extracted from dynamically solved Bethe-Salpeter wave functions. The vector meson TMDs are then studied with the light front overlap representation at leading Fock-state. All the obtained TMDs are non-vanishing and evolve with current quark mass, in particular the tensor polarized TMDs $f_{1LT}$ and $f_{1TT}$ which undergo a sign flip. The $ρ$ TMDs are compared with other model studies and agreement is found, aside from $f_{1LT}$ and $f_{1TT}$. Finally, the collinear PDFs of vector mesons are studied. The $ρ$'s valence PDFs $f_{1,v}(x)$ and $g_{1L,v}(x)$ are evolved to the scale of 2.4 GeV, with their first three moments compared to lattice QCD prediction. The qualitative behavior of tensor polarized PDF $f_{1LL}(x)$ in $ρ$ at large $x$ is also discussed.

Tight toughness, isolated toughness and binding number bounds for the $\{K_2,C_n\}$-factors

The $\{K_2,C_n\}$-factor of a graph is a spanning subgraph whose each component is either $K_2$ or $C_n$. In this paper, a sufficient condition with regard to tight toughness, isolated toughness and binding number bounds to guarantee the existence of the $\{K_2,C_{2i+1}| i\geq 2 \}$-factor for any graph is obtained, which answers a problem due to Gao and Wang (J. Oper. Res. Soc. China (2021), https://doi.org/10.1007/s40305-021-00357-6).

Separating Data via Block Invalidation Time Inference for Write Amplification Reduction in Log-Structured Storage

Log-structured storage has been widely deployed in various domains of storage systems, yet its garbage collection incurs write amplification (WA) due to the rewrites of live data. We show that there exists an optimal data placement scheme that minimizes WA using the future knowledge of block invalidation time (BIT) of each written block, yet it is infeasible to realize in practice. We propose a novel data placement algorithm for reducing WA, SepBIT, that aims to infer the BITs of written blocks from storage workloads and separately place the blocks into groups with similar estimated BITs. We show via both mathematical and production trace analyses that SepBIT effectively infers the BITs by leveraging the write skewness property in practical storage workloads. Trace analysis and prototype experiments show that SepBIT reduces WA and improves I/O throughput, respectively, compared with state-of-the-art data placement schemes. SepBIT is currently deployed to support the log-structured block storage management at Alibaba Cloud.

Ground state pseudoscalar mesons on the light front: from the light to heavy sector

We extract the leading Fock-state light front wave functions (LF-LFWFs) of both the light and heavy pseudoscalar mesons, e.g., the pion (at masses of 130 MeV, 310 MeV and 690 MeV), $η_c$ and $η_b$, from their covariant Bethe-Salpeter wave functions within the rainbow-ladder (RL) truncation. It is shown that the LF-LFWFs get narrower in $x$ (the longitudinal momentum fraction of meson carried by the quark) with the increasing current quark mass, and the leading twist parton distribution amplitudes (PDAs) inherit this feature. Meanwhile, we find in the pion the LF-LFWFs only contribute around 30\% to the total Fock-state normalization, indicating the presence of significant higher Fock-states within. In contrast, in the $η_c$ and $η_b$ the LF-LFWFs contribute more than $90$\%, suggesting the $Q\bar{Q}$ valence Fock-state truncation as a good approximation for heavy mesons. We thus study the 3-dimensional parton distributions of the $η_c$ and $η_b$ with the unpolarized generalized parton distribution function (GPD) and the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function (TMD). Through the gravitational form factors in connection with the GPD, the mass radii of the $η_c$ and $η_b$ in the light-cone frame are determined to be $r_{E,{\rm LC}}^{η_c} =0.150$ fm and $r_{E,{\rm LC}}^{η_b} =0.089$ fm respectively.

An Internal Arc Fixation Channel and Automatic Planning Algorithm for Pelvic Fracture

Fixating fractured pelvis fragments with the sacroiliac screw is a common treatment for unstable pelvis fracture. Due to the complex shape of the pelvis, sometimes a suitable straight screw fixation channel cannot be found using traditional methods, which increases the difficulty of pelvic fracture fixation. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find a new screw fixation method to improve the feasibility of pelvic fracture fixation. In this study, a new method of arc nail fixation is proposed to treat the pelvic fracture. An algorithm is proposed to verify the feasibility of the internal arc fixation channel (IAFC) in the pelvis, and the algorithm can calculate a relatively optimal IAFC in the pelvis. Furthermore, we compared the advantages and disadvantages of arc channel and straight channel through experiments. This study verified the feasibility of the IAFC, and the comparison of experimental results shows that the adaptability and safety of the arc channel fixation is better than the traditional straight sacroiliac screw.

The light front wave functions and diffractive electroproduction of vector mesons

We determine the leading Fock-state light front wave functions (LF-LFWFs) of the $ρ$ and J/$ψ$ mesons, for the first time from the Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations (DS-BSEs) approach. A unique advantage of this method is that it renders a direct extraction of LF-LFWFs in presence of a number of higher Fock-states. Modulated by the current quark mass and driven by the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB), we find the $ρ$ and $J/ψ$ LF-LFWFs different in profile, i.e., the former are broadly distributed in $x$ (the longitudinal light-cone momentum fraction of meson carried by quark) while the latter are narrow. Moreover, the $ρ$ LF-LFWFs contribute less than 50% to the total Fock-state normalization, suggesting considerable higher Fock-states in $ρ$. We then use these LF-LFWFs to study the diffractive $ρ$ and $J/ψ$ electroproduction within the dipole picture. The calculated cross section shows general agreement with HEAR data, except for growing discrepancy in $ρ$ production at low photon virtuality. Our work provides a first dipole picture analysis on diffractive $ρ$ electroproduction that confronts the parton nature of the light (anti)quarks.

Dynamic Assortment Selection under the Nested Logit Models

We study a stylized dynamic assortment planning problem during a selling season of finite length $T$. At each time period, the seller offers an arriving customer an assortment of substitutable products and the customer makes the purchase among offered products according to a discrete choice model. The goal of the seller is to maximize the expected revenue, or equivalently, to minimize the worst-case expected regret. One key challenge is that utilities of products are unknown to the seller and need to be learned. Although the dynamic assortment planning problem has received increasing attention in revenue management, most existing work is based on the multinomial logit choice models (MNL). In this paper, we study the problem of dynamic assortment planning under a more general choice model -- the nested logit model, which models hierarchical choice behavior and is ``the most widely used member of the GEV (generalized extreme value) family''. By leveraging the revenue-ordered structure of the optimal assortment within each nest, we develop a novel upper confidence bound (UCB) policy with an aggregated estimation scheme. Our policy simultaneously learns customers' choice behavior and makes dynamic decisions on assortments based on the current knowledge. It achieves the accumulated regret at the order of $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{MNT})$, where $M$ is the number of nests and $N$ is the number of products in each nest. We further provide a lower bound result of $Ω(\sqrt{MT})$, which shows the near optimality of the upper bound when $T$ is much larger than $M$ and $N$. When the number of items per nest $N$ is large, we further provide a discretization heuristic for better performance of our algorithm. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the empirical performance of our proposed algorithms.

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

Chiral phase transition inside a rotating cylinder within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We study the chiral phase transition inside a rotating cylinder within the framework of the Namb--Jona-Lasinio model. A spectral boundary condition is imposed to avoid faster than light. We investigate how the geometry of the cylinder and rotation influence the chiral phase transition at finite temperature and chemical potential. The inhomogeneous effects caused by the finite size and rotation are also taken into account. It is found that finite size will reduce the chiral transition temperature and raises the chiral transition chemical potential, while the rotation reduces both the chiral transition temperature and chemical potential. In addition, we discuss the implications of our results in heavy-ion collisions and equation of states of neutron star.

Range-Doppler Information and Doppler Scattering Information in Multipulse Radar

In this paper, the general radar measurement probfilems of determining range, Doppler frequency and scatteringproperties parameters are investigated from the viewpoint of Shannons information theory. We adopt the mutual information to evaluate the accuracy of the classification and estimation. The range-Doppler information is examined under the condition that the target is of radial velocity. Its asymptotic upper bound and the corresponding entropy error (EE) are further formulated theoretically. Additionally, the Doppler scattering information induced by targets random motion characteristics is discussed. From the derivation, it is concluded that the Doppler scattering information depends on the eigenvalues of the target scattering correlation matrix. Especially in the case where the pulse interval is larger than targets coherence time, we can find that the formula of the Doppler scattering information is similar to Shannons channel capacity equation, indicating the inherent consistency between the communication theory and radar field. Numerical simulations of these information contents are presented to confirm our theoretical observations. The relationship between the information content and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) reflects the changes in information acquisition efficiency of a radar system, providing guidance for system designers.

Perturbative method to estimate meson masses in the framework of Bethe-Salpeter equation beyond its dominant interaction

We propose a novel method to calculate the meson mass in the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equation and Bethe-Salpeter equation, once their dominant interactions are identified. The method is based on the perturbation theory of matrix, which is widely used in quantum mechanics. Taking interactions other than the dominant ones as perturbations, we derive the first order correction of quark propagator. Implementing the perturbation on BSE, the mass correction at first order is then given. We exemplify this method with the well known Rainbow-Ladder (RL) truncation, and go beyond the RL using a simple model, i.e., the Munczek-Nemirovsky~(MN) model, by studying the pion and $ρ$ mesons mass shift. The results are all in good agreement with those obtained by fully solving the BSE beyond RL. Our perturbative method therefore can be used to give a semi-quantitative estimate of meson mass correction in cases when the BSEs are complicated by interactions that go beyond the dominant one.

On non-empty cross-intersecting families

Let $2^{[n]}$ and $\binom{[n]}{i}$ be the power set and the class of all $i$-subsets of $\{1,2,\cdots,n\}$, respectively. We call two families $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{B}$ cross-intersecting if $A\cap B\neq \emptyset$ for any $A\in \mathscr{A}$ and $B\in \mathscr{B}$. In this paper we show that, for $n\geq k+l,l\geq r\geq 1,c>0$ and $\mathscr{A}\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k},\mathscr{B}\subseteq \binom{[n]}{l}$, if $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{B}$ are cross-intersecting and $\binom{n-r}{l-r}\leq|\mathscr{B}|\leq \binom{n-1}{l-1}$, then $$|\mathscr{A}|+c|\mathscr{B}|\leq \max\left\{\binom{n}{k}-\binom{n-r}{k}+c\binom{n-r}{l-r},\ \binom{n-1}{k-1}+c\binom{n-1}{l-1}\right\}$$ and the families $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{B}$ attaining the upper bound are also characterized. This generalizes the corresponding result of Hilton and Milner for $c=1$ and $r=k=l$, and implies a result of Tokushige and the second author (Theorem 1.3).

Chiral crossover transition from the Dyson-Schwinger equations in a sphere

Within the framework of Dyson--Schwinger equations of QCD, we study the effect of finite volume on the chiral phase transition in a sphere with the MIT boundary condition. We find that the chiral quark condensate $\langle\barψ ψ\rangle$ and pseudotransition temperature $T_{pc}$ of the crossover decreases as the volume decreases, until there is no chiral crossover transition at last. We find that the system for $R = \infty $\ fm is indistinguishable from $R=10$ fm and there is a significant decrease in $T_{pc}$ with $R$ as $R<4$ fm. When $R<1.5$ fm, there is no chiral transition in the system.
