The Sasaki Join, Hamiltonian 2-forms, and Constant Scalar Curvature

We describe a general procedure for constructing new Sasaki metrics of constant scalar curvature from old ones. Explicitly, we begin with a regular Sasaki metric of constant scalar curvature on a 2n+1-dimensional compact manifold M and construct a sequence, depending on four integer parameters, of rays of constant scalar curvature (CSC) Sasaki metrics on a compact Sasaki manifold of dimension $2n+3$. We also give examples which show that the CSC rays are often not unique on a fixed strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold or a fixed contact manifold. Moreover, it is shown that when the first Chern class of the contact bundle vanishes, there is a two dimensional subcone of Sasaki Ricci solitons in the Sasaki cone, and a unique Sasaki-Einstein metric in each of the two dimensional sub cones.

The Sasaki Join and Admissible Kähler Constructions

We give a survey of our recent work describing a method which combines the Sasaki join construction with the admissible Kähler construction of to obtain new extremal and new constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics, including Sasaki-Einstein metrics. The constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics also provide explicit solutions to the CR Yamabe problem. In this regard we give examples of the lack of uniqueness when the Yamabe invariant is positive.

On the Topology of some Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds

This is a sequel to our paper arXiv:1402.2546 to appear in the Journal of Geometric Analysis in which we concentrate on developing some of the topological properties of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. In particular, we explicitly compute the cohomology rings for several cases not treated in arXiv:1402.2546 and give a formula for homotopy equivalence in one particular 7-dimensional case.

The Sasaki Join, Hamiltonian 2-forms, and Sasaki-Einstein Metrics

By combining the join construction from Sasakian geometry with the Hamiltonian 2-form construction from Kähler geometry, we recover Sasaki-Einstein metrics discovered by physicists. Our geometrical approach allows us to give an algorithm for computing the topology of these Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. In particular, we explicitly compute the cohomology rings for several cases of interest and give a formula for homotopy equivalence in one particular 7-dimensional case. We also show that our construction gives at least a two dimensional cone of both Sasaki-Ricci solitons and extremal Sasaki metrics.

Simply Connected Manifolds with Infinitely Many Toric Contact Structures and Constant Scalar Curvature Sasaki Metrics

We study a class of simply connected manifolds in all odd dimensions greater than 3 that exhibit an infinite number of toric contact structures of Reeb type that are inequivalent as contact structures. We compute the cohomology ring of our manifolds by using the join construction for Sasaki manifolds and show that all such contact structures admit a ray of compatible Sasaki metrics of constant scalar curvature (CSC). Furthermore, infinitely many such structures admit at least 3 rays of constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics.

Extremal Sasakian Geometry on S^3-bundles over Riemann Surfaces

In this paper we study the Sasakian geometry on S^3-bundles over a Riemann surface of genus g>0 with emphasis on extremal Sasaki metrics. We prove the existence of a countably infinite number of inequivalent contact structures on the total space of such bundles that admit 2-dimensional Sasaki cones each with a Sasaki metric of constant scalar curvature (CSC). This CSC Sasaki metric is most often irregular. We further study the extremal subset in the Sasaki cone showing that if 0<g<5 it exhausts the entire cone. Examples are given where exhaustion fails.

Maximal Tori in Contactomorphism Groups

I describe a general scheme which associates conjugacy classes of tori in the contactomorphism group to transverse almost complex structures on a compact contact manifold. Moreover, to tori of Reeb type whose Lie algebra contains a Reeb vector field one can associate a Sasaki cone. Thus, for contact structures of K-contact type one obtains a configuration of Sasaki cones called a bouquet such that each Sasaki cone is associated with a conjugacy class of tori of Reeb type.

Extremal Sasakian Geometry on $T^2\times S^3$ and Related Manifolds

We prove the existence of extremal Sasakian structures occurring on a countably infinite number of distinct contact structures on $T^2\times S^3$ and certain related manifolds. These structures occur in bouquets and exhaust the Sasaki cones in all except one case in which there are no extremal metrics.

Sasakian Manifolds with Perfect Fundamental Groups

Using the Sasakian join construction with homology 3-spheres, we give a countably infinite number of examples of Sasakian manifolds with perfect fundamental group in all odd dimensions greater than 1. These have extremal Sasaki metrics with constant scalar curvature. Moreover, we present further examples of both Sasaki-Einstein and Sasaki-$η$-Einstein metrics.

On the Equivalence Problem for Toric Contact Structures on S^3-bundles over S^2$

We study the contact equivalence problem for toric contact structures on $S^3$-bundles over $S^2$. That is, given two toric contact structures, one can ask the question: when are they equivalent as contact structures while inequivalent as toric contact structures? In general this appears to be a difficult problem. To find inequivalent toric contact structures that are contact equivalent, we show that the corresponding 3-tori belong to distinct conjugacy classes in the contactomorphism group. To show that two toric contact structures with the same first Chern class are contact inequivalent, we use Morse-Bott contact homology. We treat a subclass of contact structures which include the Sasaki-Einstein contact structures $Y^{p,q}$ studied by physicists. In this subcase we give a complete solution to the contact equivalence problem by showing that $Y^{p,q}$ and $Y^{p'q'}$ are inequivalent as contact structures if and only if $p\neq p'$.

Completely Integrable Contact Hamiltonian Systems and Toric Contact Structures on $S^2\times S^3$

I begin by giving a general discussion of completely integrable Hamiltonian systems in the setting of contact geometry. We then pass to the particular case of toric contact structures on the manifold $S^2\times S^3$. In particular we give a complete solution to the contact equivalence problem for a class of toric contact structures, $Y^{p,q}$, discovered by physicists by showing that $Y^{p,q}$ and $Y^{p',q'}$ are inequivalent as contact structures if and only if $p\neq p'$.

On Sasaki-Einstein manifolds in dimension five

We prove the existence of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on certain simply connected 5-manifolds where until now existence was unknown. All of these manifolds have non-trivial torsion classes. On several of these we show that there are a countable infinity of deformation classes of Sasaki-Einstein structures.

The Sasakian Geometry of the Heisenberg Group

In this note I study the Sasakian geometry associated to the standard CR structure on the Heisenberg group, and prove that the Sasaki cone coincides with the set of extremal Sasakian structures. Moreover, the scalar curvature of these extremal metrics is constant if and only if the metric has $Φ$-sectional curvature $-3.$ I also briefly discuss some relations with the well-know sub-Riemannian geometry of the Heisenberg group as well as the standard Sasakian structure induced on compact quotients.

The Sasaki Cone and Extremal Sasakian Metrics

We study the Sasaki cone of a CR structure of Sasaki type on a given closed manifold. We introduce an energy functional over the cone, and use its critical points to single out the strongly extremal Reeb vectors fields. Should one such vector field be a member of the extremal set, the scalar curvature of a Sasaki extremal metric representing it would have the smallest $L^2$-norm among all Sasakian metrics of fixed volume that can represent vector fields in the cone. We use links of isolated hypersurface singularities to produce examples of manifolds of Sasaki type, many of these in dimension five, whose Sasaki cone coincides with the extremal set, and examples where the extremal set is empty. We end up by proving that a conjecture of Orlik concerning the torsion of the homology groups of these links holds in the five dimensional case.

Sasakian Geometry, Holonomy, and Supersymmetry

In this expository article we discuss the relations between Sasakian geometry, reduced holonomy and supersymmetry. It is well known that the Riemannian manifolds other than the round spheres that admit real Killing spinors are precisely Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, 7-manifolds with a nearly parallel G2 structure, and nearly Kaehler 6-manifolds. We then discuss the relations between the latter two and Sasaki-Einstein geometry.

Canonical Sasakian Metrics

Let $M$ be a closed manifold of Sasaki type. A polarization of $M$ is defined by a Reeb vector field, and for one such, we consider the set of all Sasakian metrics compatible with it. On this space, we study the functional given by the squared $L^2$-norm of the scalar curvature. We prove that its critical points, or canonical representatives of the polarization, are Sasakian metrics that are transversally extremal. We define a Sasaki-Futaki invariant of the polarization, and show that it obstructs the existence of constant scalar curvature representatives. For a fixed CR structure of Sasaki type, we define the Sasaki cone of structures compatible with this underlying CR structure, and prove that the set of polarizations in it that admit a canonical representative is open.
