Constructions in Sasakian Geometry

We describe various constructions in Sasakian geometry. First we generalize the join construction of the first two authors to arbitrary Sasakian manifolds. We then give several examples, including ones which prove the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics on manifolds homeomorphic to $S^2\times S^5.$ Then we use a generalization of the join construction due to Lerman, namely contact fibre bundles, to give a theorem constructing toric Sasakian structures. Finally, we explicitly construct regular toric Sasakian structures on all simply connected regular contact manifolds in dimension five.

On Eta-Einstein Sasakian Geometry

We study eta-Einstein geometry as a class of distinguished Riemannian metrics on contact metric manifolds. In particular, we use a previous solution of the Calabi problem for Sasakian geometry to prove the existence of eta-Einstein structures on many different compact manifolds, including exotic spheres. We also relate these results to the existence of Einstein-Weyl structures.

Sasakian Geometry and Einstein Metrics on Spheres

This paper is based on a talk presented by the first author at the Short Program on Riemannian Geometry that took place at the Centre de Recherche Mathématiques, Université de Montréal, during the period June 28-July 16, 2004. It is a report on our joint work with János Kollár concerning the existence of an abundance of Einstein metrics on odd dimensional spheres, including exotic spheres.

Einstein Metrics on Spheres

We prove the existence of an abundance of new Einstein metrics on odd dimensional spheres including exotic spheres, many of them depending on continuous parameters. The number of families as well as the number of parameter grows double exponentially with the dimension. Our method of proof uses Brieskorn-Pham singularities to realize spheres (and exotic spheres) as circle orbi-bundles over complex algebraic orbifolds, and lift a Kaehler-Einstein metric from the orbifold to a Sasakian-Einstein metric on the sphere.

Einstein Metrics on Rational Homology Spheres

We prove the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics on infinitely many rational homology spheres in all odd dimensions greater than 3. In dimension 5 we obain somewhat sharper results. There are examples where the number of effective parameters in the Einstein metric grows exponentially with dimension.

Einstein Metrics on Exotic Spheres in Dimensions 7, 11, and 15

In a recent article the first three authors proved that in dimension $4m+1$ all homotopy spheres that bound parallelizable manifolds admit Einstein metrics of positive scalar curvature which, in fact, are Sasakian-Einstein. They also conjectured that all such homotopy spheres in dimension $4m-1, m\geq2$ admit Sasakian-Einstein metrics \cite{BGK}, and proved this for the simplest case, namely dimension $7.$ In this paper we describe computer programs that show that this conjecture is also true for 11-spheres and 15-spheres. Moreover, a program is given that determines the partition of the 8610 deformation classes of Sasakian-Einstein metrics into the 28 distinct oriented diffomorphism types in dimension $7.$

Toric self-dual Einstein metrics as quotients

We use the quaternion Kahler reduction technique to study old and new self-dual Einstein metrics of negative scalar curvature with at least a two-dimensional isometry group, and relate the quotient construction to the hyperbolic eigenfunction Ansatz. We focus in particular on the (semi-)quaternion Kahler quotients of (semi-)quaternion Kahler hyperboloids, analysing the completeness and topology, and relating them to the self-dual Einstein Hermitian metrics of Apostolov-Gauduchon and Bryant.

New Einstein Metrics on 8#(S^2 times S^3)

We show that #8(S^2 times S^3) admits two 8-dimensional complex families of inequivalent non-regular Sasakian-Einstein structures. These are the first known non-regular Sasakian-Einstein metrics on this 5-manifold.

Rational Homology 5-Spheres with Positive Ricci Curvature

We prove that for every integer k>1 there is a simply connected rational homology 5-sphere $\scriptstyle{M^5_k}$ with spin such that $\scriptstyle{H_2(M^5_k,\bbz)}$ has order $\scriptstyle{k^2},$ and $\scriptstyle{M^5_k}$ admits a Riemannian metric of positive Ricci curvature. Moreover, if the prime number decomposition of $\scriptstyle{k}$ has the form $\scriptstyle{k=p_1... p_r}$ for distinct primes $\scriptstyle{p_i}$ then $\scriptstyle{M^5_k}$ is uniquely determined.

Sasakian Geometry, Homotopy Spheres and Positive Ricci Curvature

We discuss the Sasakian geometry of odd dimensional homotopy spheres. In particular, we give a completely new proof of the existence of metrics of positive Ricci curvature on exotic spheres that can be realized as the boundary of a parallelizable manifold. Furthermore, it is shown that on such homotopy spheres $\scriptstyle{Σ^{2n+1}}$ the moduli space of Sasakian structures has infinitely many positive components determined by inequivalent underlying contact structures. We also prove the existence of Sasakian metrics with positive Ricci curvature on each of the known $\scriptstyle{2^{2m}}$ distinct diffeomorphism types of homotopy real projective spaces in dimension $4m+1$.

New Einstein Metrics in Dimension Five

The purpose of this note is to introduce a new method for proving the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics on certain simply connected odd dimensional manifolds. We then apply this method to prove the existence of new Sasakian-Einstein metrics on $\scriptstyle{S^2\times S^3}$ and on $\scriptstyle{(S^2\times S^3)# (S^2\times S^3).}$ These give the first known examples of non-regular Sasakian-Einstein 5-manifolds. Our method involves describing the Sasakian-Einstein structures as links of certain isolated hypersurface singularities, and makes use of the recent work of Demailly and Kollár, AG/9910118, who obtained new examples of Kähler-Einstein del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities.

Einstein Metrics on Rational Homology 7-Spheres

In this paper we demonstrate the existence of Sasakian-Einstein structures on certain 2-connected rational homology 7-spheres. These appear to be the first non-regular examples of Sasakian-Einstein metrics on simply connected rational homology spheres. We also briefly describe the rational homology 7-spheres that admit regular positive Sasakian structures.

On Positive Sasakian Geometry

A Sasakian structure on a manifold is called {\it positive} if its basic first Chern class can be represented by a positive (1,1)-form with respect to its transverse holomorphic CR-structure. We prove a theorem that says that every positive Sasakian structure can be deformed to a Sasakian structure whose metric has positive Ricci curvature. This allows us by example to give a completely independent proof of a result of Sha and Yang [SY] that for every positive integer k the k-fold connected sum of $S^2\times S^3$ admits metrics of positive Ricci curvature.

On the Geometry of Sasakian-Einstein 5-Manifolds

On simply connected five manifolds Sasakian-Einstein metrics coincide with Riemannian metrics admitting real Killing spinors which are of great interest as models of near horizon geometry for three-brane solutions in superstring theory [KW]. We expand on the recent work of Demailly and Kollár [DK] and Johnson and Kollár [JK1] who give methods for constructing Kähler-Einstein metrics on log del Pezzo surfaces. By [BG1] circle V-bundles over log del Pezzo surfaces with Kähler-Einstein metrics have Sasakian-Einstein metrics on the total space of the bundle. Here these simply connected 5-manifolds arise as links of isolated hypersurface singularities which by the well known work of Smale [Sm] together with [BG3] must be diffeomorphic to $\scriptstyle{S^5#l(S^2\times S^3)}.$ More precisely, using methods from Mori theory in algebraic geometry we prove the existence of 14 inequivalent Sasakian-Einstein structures on $\scriptstyle{S^2\times S^3}$ and infinite families of such structures on $\scriptstyle{#l(S^2\times S^3)}$ with $\scriptstyle{2\leq l\leq7}$. We also discuss the moduli problem for these Sasakian-Einstein structures.

Sasakian-Einstein Structures on $9#(S^2\times S^3)$

We show that $\scriptstyle{#9(S^2\times S^3)}$ admits an 8-dimensional complex family of inequivalent non-regular Sasakian-Einstein structures. These are the first known Einstein metrics on this 5-manifold. In particular, the bound $\scriptstyle{b_2(M)\leq8}$ which holds for any regular Sasakian-Einstein $\scriptstyle{M}$ does not apply to the non-regular case. We also discuss the failure of the Hitchin-Thorpe inequality in the case of 4-orbifolds and describe the orbifold version.

On Sasakian-Einstein Geometry

We discuss Sasakian-Einstein geometry under a quasi-regularity assumption. It is shown that the space of all quasi-regular Sasakian-Einstein orbifolds has a natural multiplication on it. Furthermore, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the `product' of two Sasakian-Einstein manifolds to be a smooth Sasakian-Einstein manifold. Using spectral sequence arguments we work out the cohomology ring in many cases of interest. This type of geometry has recently become of interest in the physics of supersymmetric conformal field theories.

3-Sasakian Geometry, Nilpotent Orbits, and Exceptional Quotients

Using 3-Sasakian reduction techniques we obtain infinite families of new 3-Sasakian manifolds $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3)}$ and $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4)}$ in dimension 11 and 15 respectively. The metric cone on $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3)}$ is a generalization of the Kronheimer hyperkähler metric on the regular maximal nilpotent orbit of $\scriptstyle{{\Got s}{\Got l}(3,\bbc)}$ whereas the cone on $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4)}$ generalizes the hyperkähler metric on the 16-dimensional orbit of $\scriptstyle{{\Got s}{\Got o}(6,\bbc)}$. These are first examples of 3-Sasakian metrics which are neither homogeneous nor toric. In addition we consider some further $\scriptstyle{U(1)}$-reductions of $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3)}$. These yield examples of non-toric 3-Sasakian orbifold metrics in dimensions 7. As a result we obtain explicit families $\scriptstyle{{\cal O}(Θ)}$ of compact self-dual positive scalar curvature Einstein metrics with orbifold singularities and with only one Killing vector field.
