Beamforming Analysis and Design for Wideband THz Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided terahertz (THz) communications have been regarded as a promising candidate for future 6G networks because of its ultra-wide bandwidth and ultra-low power consumption. However, there exists the beam split problem, especially when the base station (BS) or RIS owns the large-scale antennas, which may lead to serious array gain loss. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the beam split and beamforming design problems in the THz RIS communications. Specifically, we first analyze the beam split effect caused by different RIS sizes, shapes and deployments. On this basis, we apply the fully connected time delayer phase shifter hybrid beamforming architecture at the BS and deploy distributed RISs to cooperatively mitigate the beam split effect. We aim to maximize the achievable sum rate by jointly optimizing the hybrid analog/digital beamforming, time delays at the BS and reflection coefficients at the RISs. To solve the formulated problem, we first design the analog beamforming and time delays based on different RISs physical directions, and then it is transformed into an optimization problem by jointly optimizing the digital beamforming and reflection coefficients. Next, we propose an alternatively iterative optimization algorithm to deal with it. Specifically, for given the reflection coefficients, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the minimum mean square error technique to obtain the digital beamforming. After, we apply LDR and MCQT methods to transform the original problem to a QCQP, which can be solved by ADMM technique to obtain the reflection coefficients. Finally, the digital beamforming and reflection coefficients are obtained via repeating the above processes until convergence. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme can effectively alleviate the beam split effect and improve the system capacity.

Attack-Resilient Design for Connected and Automated Vehicles

By sharing local sensor information via Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) wireless communication networks, Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is a technology that enables Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) to drive autonomously on the highway in closely-coupled platoons. The use of CACC technologies increases safety and the traffic throughput, and decreases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. However, CAVs heavily rely on embedded software, hardware, and communication networks that make them vulnerable to a range of cyberattacks. Cyberattacks to a particular CAV compromise the entire platoon as CACC schemes propagate corrupted data to neighboring vehicles potentially leading to traffic delays and collisions. Physics-based monitors can be used to detect the presence of False Data Injection (FDI) attacks to CAV sensors; however, unavoidable system disturbances and modelling uncertainty often translates to conservative detection results. Given enough system knowledge, adversaries are still able to launch a range of attacks that can surpass the detection scheme by hiding within the system disturbances and uncertainty -- we refer to this class of attacks as \textit{stealthy FDI attacks}. Stealthy attacks are hard to deal with as they affect the platoon dynamics without being noticed. In this manuscript, we propose a co-design methodology (built around a series convex programs) to synthesize distributed attack monitors and $H_{\infty}$ CACC controllers that minimize the joint effect of stealthy FDI attacks and system disturbances on the platoon dynamics while guaranteeing a prescribed platooning performance (in terms of tracking and string stability). Computer simulations are provided to illustrate the performance of out tools.

PVI-DSO: Leveraging Planar Regularities for Direct Sparse Visual-Inertial Odometry

The monocular visual-inertial odometry (VIO) based on the direct method can leverage all available pixels in the image to simultaneously estimate the camera motion and reconstruct the denser map of the scene in real time. However, the direct method is sensitive to photometric changes, which can be compensated by introducing geometric information in the environment. In this paper, we propose a monocular direct sparse visual-inertial odometry, which exploits the planar regularities (PVI-DSO). Our system detects the planar regularities from the 3D mesh built on the estimated map points. To improve the pose estimation accuracy with the geometric information, a tightly coupled coplanar constraint expression is used to express photometric error in the direct method. Additionally, to improve the optimization efficiency, we elaborately derive the analytical Jacobian of the linearization form for the coplanar constraint. Finally, the inertial measurement error, coplanar point photometric error, non-coplanar photometric error, and prior error are added into the optimizer, which simultaneously improves the pose estimation accuracy and mesh itself. We verified the performance of the whole system on simulation and real-world datasets. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that our system outperforms the state-of-the-art counterparts.

K-Means Based Constellation Optimization for Index Modulated Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently emerged as a promising technology enabling next-generation wireless networks. In this letter, we develop an improved index modulation (IM) scheme by utilizing RIS to convey information. Specifically, we study an RIS-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) system, in which the information bits are conveyed by reflection patterns of RIS rather than the conventional amplitude-phase constellation. Furthermore, the K-means algorithm is employed to optimize the reflection constellation to improve the error performance. Also, we propose a generalized Gray coding method for mapping information bits to an appropriate reflection constellation and analytically evaluate the error performance of the proposed scheme by deriving a tight upper bound of the average bit error rate (BER). Finally, numerical results verify the accuracy of our theoretical analysis as well as the substantially improved BER performance of the proposed RIS-based IM transmission scheme.

Exploiting Radio Fingerprints for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is paramount for unmanned systems to achieve self-localization and navigation. It is challenging to perform SLAM in large environments, due to sensor limitations, complexity of the environment, and computational resources. We propose a novel approach for localization and mapping of autonomous vehicles using radio fingerprints, for example WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) or LTE (Long Term Evolution) radio features, which are widely available in the existing infrastructure. In particular, we present two solutions to exploit the radio fingerprints for SLAM. In the first solution-namely Radio SLAM, the output is a radio fingerprint map generated using SLAM technique. In the second solution-namely Radio+LiDAR SLAM, we use radio fingerprint to assist conventional LiDAR-based SLAM to improve accuracy and speed, while generating the occupancy map. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system in three different environments, namely outdoor, indoor building, and semi-indoor environment.

A Federated Learning-based Industrial Health Prognostics for Heterogeneous Edge Devices using Matched Feature Extraction

Data-driven industrial health prognostics require rich training data to develop accurate and reliable predictive models. However, stringent data privacy laws and the abundance of edge industrial data necessitate decentralized data utilization. Thus, the industrial health prognostics field is well suited to significantly benefit from federated learning (FL), a decentralized and privacy-preserving learning technique. However, FL-based health prognostics tasks have hardly been investigated due to the complexities of meaningfully aggregating model parameters trained from heterogeneous data to form a high performing federated model. Specifically, data heterogeneity among edge devices, stemming from dissimilar degradation mechanisms and unequal dataset sizes, poses a critical statistical challenge for developing accurate federated models. We propose a pioneering FL-based health prognostic model with a feature similarity-matched parameter aggregation algorithm to discriminatingly learn from heterogeneous edge data. The algorithm searches across the heterogeneous locally trained models and matches neurons with probabilistically similar feature extraction functions first, before selectively averaging them to form the federated model parameters. As the algorithm only averages similar neurons, as opposed to conventional naive averaging of coordinate-wise neurons, the distinct feature extractors of local models are carried over with less dilution to the resultant federated model. Using both cyclic degradation data of Li-ion batteries and non-cyclic data of turbofan engines, we demonstrate that the proposed method yields accuracy improvements as high as 44.5\% and 39.3\% for state-of-health estimation and remaining useful life estimation, respectively.

Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces for Efficient Holographic MIMO Communications in 6G

The revolutionary technology of \emph{Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIM)} has been recently shown to be capable of carrying out advanced signal processing directly in the native electromagnetic (EM) wave domain. An SIM is fabricated by a sophisticated amalgam of multiple stacked metasurface layers, which may outperform its single-layer metasurface counterparts, such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISd) and metasurface lenses. We harness this new SIM concept for implementing efficient holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) communications that dot require excessive radio-frequency (RF) chains, which constitutes a substantial benefit compared to existing implementations. We first present an HMIMO communication system based on a pair of SIMs at the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX), respectively. In sharp contrast to the conventional MIMO designs, the considered SIMs are capable of automatically accomplishing transmit precoding and receiver combining, as the EM waves propagate through them. As such, each information data stream can be directly radiated and recovered from the corresponding transmit and receive ports. Secondly, we formulate the problem of minimizing the error between the actual end-to-end SIMs'parametrized channel matrix and the target diagonal one, with the latter representing a flawless interference-free system of parallel subchannels. This is achieved by jointly optimizing the phase shifts associated with all the metasurface layers of both the TX-SIM and RX-SIM. We then design a gradient descent algorithm to solve the resultant non-convex problem. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze the HMIMO channel capacity bound and provide some useful fundamental insights. Extensive simulation results are provided for characterizing our SIM-based HMIMO system, quantifying its substantial performance benefits.

Robust Beamforming Design for RIS-aided Cell-free Systems with CSI Uncertainties and Capacity-limited Backhaul

In this paper, we consider the robust beamforming design in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free (CF) system considering the channel state information (CSI) uncertainties of both the direct channels and cascaded channels at the transmitter with capacity-limited backhaul. We jointly optimize the precoding at the access points (APs) and the phase shifts at multiple RISs to maximize the worst-case sum rate of the CF system subject to the constraints of maximum transmit power of APs, unit-modulus phase shifts, limited backhaul capacity, and bounded CSI errors. By applying a series of transformations, the non-smoothness and semi-infinite constraints are tackled in a low-complexity manner that facilitates the design of an alternating optimization (AO)-based iterative algorithm. The proposed algorithm divides the considered problem into two subproblems. For the RIS phase shifts optimization subproblem, we exploit the penalty convex-concave procedure (P-CCP) to obtain a stationary solution and achieve effective initialization. For precoding optimization subproblem, successive convex approximation (SCA) is adopted with a convergence guarantee to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust beamforming design, which achieves superior performance with low complexity. Moreover, the importance of RIS phase shift optimization for robustness and the advantages of distributed RISs in the CF system are further highlighted.

Fundamental Detection Probability vs. Achievable Rate Tradeoff in Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

Integrating sensing functionalities is envisioned as a distinguishing feature of next-generation mobile networks, which has given rise to the development of a novel enabling technology -- \emph{Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC)}. Portraying the theoretical performance bounds of ISAC systems is fundamentally important to understand how sensing and communication functionalities interact (e.g., competitively or cooperatively) in terms of resource utilization, while revealing insights and guidelines for the development of effective physical-layer techniques. In this paper, we characterize the fundamental performance tradeoff between the detection probability for target monitoring and the user's achievable rate in ISAC systems. To this end, we first discuss the achievable rate of the user under sensing-free and sensing-interfered communication scenarios. Furthermore, we derive closed-form expressions for the probability of false alarm (PFA) and the successful probability of detection (PD) for monitoring the target of interest, where we consider both communication-assisted and communication-interfered sensing scenarios. In addition, the effects of the unknown channel coefficient are also taken into account in our theoretical analysis. Based on our analytical results, we then carry out a comprehensive assessment of the performance tradeoff between sensing and communication functionalities. Specifically, we formulate a power allocation problem to minimize the transmit power at the base station (BS) under the constraints of ensuring a required PD for perception as well as the communication user's quality of service requirement in terms of achievable rate. Finally, simulation results corroborate the accuracy of our theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed power allocation solutions.

Semi-Supervised RF Fingerprinting with Consistency-Based Regularization

As a promising non-password authentication technology, radio frequency (RF) fingerprinting can greatly improve wireless security. Recent work has shown that RF fingerprinting based on deep learning can significantly outperform conventional approaches. The superiority, however, is mainly attributed to supervised learning using a large amount of labeled data, and it significantly degrades if only limited labeled data is available, making many existing algorithms lack practicability. Considering that it is often easier to obtain enough unlabeled data in practice with minimal resources, we leverage deep semi-supervised learning for RF fingerprinting, which largely relies on a composite data augmentation scheme designed for radio signals, combined with two popular techniques: consistency-based regularization and pseudo-labeling. Experimental results on both simulated and real-world datasets demonstrate that our proposed method for semi-supervised RF fingerprinting is far superior to other competing ones, and it can achieve remarkable performance almost close to that of fully supervised learning with a very limited number of examples.

Environment-Aware Codebook for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided MISO Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a revolutionary technology that can customize the wireless channel and improve the energy efficiency of next-generation cellular networks. This letter proposes an environment-aware codebook design by employing the statistical channel state information (CSI) for RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. Specifically, first of all, we generate multiple virtual channels offline by utilizing the location information and design an environment-aware reflection coefficient codebook. Thus, we only need to estimate the composite channel and optimize the active transmit beamforming for each reflection coefficient in the pre-designed codebook, while simplifying the reflection optimization substantially. Moreover, we analyze the theoretical performance of the proposed scheme. Finally, numerical results verify the performance benefits of the proposed scheme over the cascaded channel estimation and passive beamforming as well as the existing codebook scheme in the face of channel estimation errors, albeit its significantly reduced overhead and complexity.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Interplay of Unit-Cell- and Surface-Level Design and Performance under Quantifiable Benchmarks

The ability of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to produce complex radiation patterns in the far-field is determined by various factors, such as the unit-cell's size, shape, spatial arrangement, tuning mechanism, the communication and control circuitry's complexity, and the illuminating source's type (point/planewave). Research on RIS has been mainly focused on two areas: first, the optimization and design of unit-cells to achieve desired electromagnetic responses within a specific frequency band; and second, exploring the applications of RIS in various settings, including system-level performance analysis. The former does not assume any specific radiation pattern on the surface level, while the latter does not consider any particular unit-cell design. Both approaches largely ignore the complexity and power requirements of the RIS control circuitry. As we progress towards the fabrication and use of RIS in real-world settings, it is becoming increasingly necessary to consider the interplay between the unit-cell design, the required surface-level radiation patterns, the control circuit's complexity, and the power requirements concurrently. In this paper, a benchmarking framework for RIS is employed to compare performance and analyze tradeoffs between the unit-cell's specified radiation patterns and the control circuit's complexity for far-field beamforming, considering different diode-based unit-cell designs for a given surface size. This work lays the foundation for optimizing the design of the unit-cells and surface-level radiation patterns, facilitating the optimization of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems.

Lithium-ion Battery Online Knee Onset Detection by Matrix Profile

Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) degrade slightly until the knee onset, after which the deterioration accelerates to end of life (EOL). The knee onset, which marks the initiation of the accelerated degradation rate, is crucial in providing an early warning of the battery's performance changes. However, there is only limited literature on online knee onset identification. Furthermore, it is good to perform such identification using easily collected measurements. To solve these challenges, an online knee onset identification method is developed by exploiting the temporal information within the discharge data. First, the temporal dynamics embedded in the discharge voltage cycles from the slight degradation stage are extracted by the dynamic time warping. Second, the anomaly is exposed by Matrix Profile during subsequence similarity search. The knee onset is detected when the temporal dynamics of the new cycle exceed the control limit and the profile index indicates a change in regime. Finally, the identified knee onset is utilized to categorize the battery into long-range or short-range categories by its strong correlation with the battery's EOL cycles. With the support of the battery categorization and the training data acquired under the same statistic distribution, the proposed SOH estimation model achieves enhanced estimation results with a root mean squared error as low as 0.22%.

Near-Field Channel Estimation for Extremely Large-Scale Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (XL-RIS)-Aided Wideband mmWave Systems

Near-field communications present new opportunities over near-field channels, however, the spherical wavefront propagation makes near-field signal processing challenging. In this context, this paper proposes efficient near-field channel estimation methods for wideband MIMO mmWave systems with the aid of extremely large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (XL-RIS). For the wideband signals reflected by the analog RIS, we characterize their near-field beam squint effect in both angle and distance domains. Based on the mathematical analysis of the near-field beam patterns over all frequencies, a wideband spherical-domain dictionary is constructed by minimizing the coherence of two arbitrary beams. In light of this, we formulate a two-dimensional compressive sensing problem to recover the channel parameter based on the spherical-domain sparsity of mmWave channels. To this end, we present a correlation coefficient-based atom matching method within our proposed multi-frequency parallelizable subspace recovery framework for efficient solutions. Additionally, we propose a two-dimensional oracle estimator as a benchmark and derive its lower bound across all subcarriers. Our findings emphasize the significance of system hyperparameters and the sensing matrix of each subcarrier in determining the accuracy of the estimation. Finally, numerical results show that our proposed method achieves considerable performance compared with the lower bound and has a time complexity linear to the number of RIS elements.

A Slow-Shifting Concerned Machine Learning Method for Short-term Traffic Flow Forecasting

The ability to predict traffic flow over time for crowded areas during rush hours is increasingly important as it can help authorities make informed decisions for congestion mitigation or scheduling of infrastructure development in an area. However, a crucial challenge in traffic flow forecasting is the slow shifting in temporal peaks between daily and weekly cycles, resulting in the nonstationarity of the traffic flow signal and leading to difficulty in accurate forecasting. To address this challenge, we propose a slow shifting concerned machine learning method for traffic flow forecasting, which includes two parts. First, we take advantage of Empirical Mode Decomposition as the feature engineering to alleviate the nonstationarity of traffic flow data, yielding a series of stationary components. Second, due to the superiority of Long-Short-Term-Memory networks in capturing temporal features, an advanced traffic flow forecasting model is developed by taking the stationary components as inputs. Finally, we apply this method on a benchmark of real-world data and provide a comparison with other existing methods. Our proposed method outperforms the state-of-art results by 14.55% and 62.56% using the metrics of root mean squared error and mean absolute percentage error, respectively.
