Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Full-Duplex mmWave MIMO: Channel Estimation, Passive and Hybrid Beamforming

Millimeter wave (mmWave) full-duplex (FD) is a promising technique for improving capacity by maximizing the utilization of both time and the rich mmWave frequency resources. Still, it has restrictions due to FD self-interference (SI) and mmWave's limited coverage. Therefore, this study dives into FD mmWave MIMO with the assistance of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for capacity improvement. First, we demonstrate the angular-domain reciprocity of FD antenna arrays under the far-field planar wavefront assumption. Accordingly, a strategy for joint downlink-uplink (DL-UL) channel estimation is presented. For estimating the SI channel, the direct channel, and the cascaded channel, the Khatri-Rao product-based compressive sensing (KR-CS), distributed CS (D-CS), and two-stage multiple measurement vector-based D-CS (M-D-CS) frameworks are proposed, respectively. Additionally, we propose a passive beamforming optimization solution based on the angular-domain cascaded channel. With hybrid beamforming architectures, a novel hybrid weighted minimum mean squared error method for SI cancellation (H-WMMSE-SIC) is proposed. Simulations have revealed that joint DL-UL processing significantly improves estimation performance in comparison to separate DL/UL channel estimation. Particularly, when the interference-to-noise ratio is less than 35 dB, our proposed H-WMMSE-SIC offers spectral efficiency performance comparable to fully-digital WMMSE-SIC. Finally, the computational complexity is analyzed for our proposed methods.

A Generalized Electromagnetic-Domain Channel Modeling for LOS Holographic MIMO with Arbitrary Surface Placements

Holographic multiple-input multiple-output (H-MIMO) is considered as one of the most promising technologies to enable future wireless communications in supporting the expected extreme requirements, such as high energy and spectral efficiency. Empowered by the powerful capability in electromagnetic (EM) wave manipulations, H-MIMO has the potential to reach the fundamental limit of the wireless environment, and opens up the possibility of signal processing in the EM-domain, which needs to be depicted carefully from an EM perspective, especially the wireless channel. To this aim, we study the line-of-sight (LOS) H-MIMO communications with arbitrary surface placements and establish an exact expression of the wireless channel in the EM-domain. To further obtain a more explicit and computationally-efficient channel models, we solve the implicit integrals of the exact channel model with moderate and reasonable assumptions. Numerical studies are executed and the results show good agreements of our established approximated channel models to the exact channel model.

Spatiotemporal Capsule Neural Network for Vehicle Trajectory Prediction

Through advancement of the Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) network, road safety, energy consumption, and traffic efficiency can be significantly improved. An accurate vehicle trajectory prediction benefits communication traffic management and network resource allocation for the real-time application of the V2X network. Recurrent neural networks and their variants have been reported in recent research to predict vehicle mobility. However, the spatial attribute of vehicle movement behavior has been overlooked, resulting in incomplete information utilization. To bridge this gap, we put forward for the first time a hierarchical trajectory prediction structure using the capsule neural network (CapsNet) with three sequential components. First, the geographic information is transformed into a grid map presentation, describing vehicle mobility distribution spatially and temporally. Second, CapsNet serves as the core model to embed local temporal and global spatial correlation through hierarchical capsules. Finally, extensive experiments conducted on actual taxi mobility data collected in Porto city (Portugal) and Singapore show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces for Multiuser Beamforming in the Wave Domain

Reconfigurable intelligent surface has recently emerged as a promising technology for shaping the wireless environment by leveraging massive low-cost reconfigurable elements. Prior works mainly focus on a single-layer metasurface that lacks the capability of suppressing multiuser interference. By contrast, we propose a stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM)-enabled transceiver design for multiuser multiple-input single-output downlink communications. Specifically, the SIM is endowed with a multilayer structure and is deployed at the base station to perform transmit beamforming directly in the electromagnetic wave domain. As a result, an SIM-enabled transceiver overcomes the need for digital beamforming and operates with low-resolution digital-to-analog converters and a moderate number of radio-frequency chains, which significantly reduces the hardware cost and energy consumption, while substantially decreasing the precoding delay benefiting from the processing performed in the wave domain. To leverage the benefits of SIM-enabled transceivers, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the sum rate of all the users by jointly designing the transmit power allocated to them and the analog beamforming in the wave domain. Numerical results based on a customized alternating optimization algorithm corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed SIM-enabled analog beamforming design as compared with various benchmark schemes. Most notably, the proposed analog beamforming scheme is capable of substantially decreasing the precoding delay compared to its digital counterpart.

Channel Modeling and Multi-User Precoding for Tri-Polarized Holographic MIMO Communications

This paper studies the exploitation of triple polarization (TP) for multi-user (MU) holographic multiple-input multiple-output surface (HMIMOS) wireless communication systems, aiming at capacity boosting without enlarging the antenna array size. We specifically consider that both the transmitter and receiver are equipped with an HMIMOS comprising compact sub-wavelength TP patch antennas. To characterize TP MUHMIMOS systems, a TP near-field channel model is proposed using the dyadic Green's function, whose characteristics are leveraged to design a user-cluster-based precoding scheme for mitigating the cross-polarization and inter-user interference contributions. A theoretical correlation analysis for HMIMOS with infinitely small patch antennas is also presented. According to the proposed scheme, the users are assigned to one of the three polarizations, which is easy to implement, at the cost, however, of reducing the system's diversity. Our numerical results showcase that the cross-polarization channel components have a nonnegligible impact on the system performance, which is efficiently eliminated with the proposed MU precoding scheme.

Cooperative Beamforming and RISs Association for Multi-RISs Aided Multi-Users MmWave MIMO Systems through Graph Neural Networks

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered as a promising solution for next-generation wireless communication networks due to a variety of merits, e.g., customizing the communication environment. Therefore, deploying multiple RISs helps overcome severe signal blocking between the base station (BS) and users, which is also a practical and effective solution to achieve better service coverage. However, reaping the full benefits of a multi-RISs aided communication system requires solving a non-convex, infinite-dimensional optimization problem, which motivates the use of learning-based methods to configure the optimal policy. This paper adopts a novel heterogeneous graph neural network (GNN) to effectively exploit the graph topology in the wireless communication optimization problem. First, we characterize all communication link features and interference relations in our system with a heterogeneous graph structure. Then, we endeavor to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of all users by jointly optimizing the active beamforming at the BS, the passive beamforming vector of the RIS elements, as well as the RISs association strategy. Unlike most existing work, we consider a more general scenario where the cascaded link for each user is not fixed but dynamically selected by maximizing the WSR. Simulation results show that our proposed heterogeneous GNNs perform about 10 times better than other benchmarks, and a suitable RISs association strategy is also validated to be effective in improving the quality services of users by 30%.

Location-based Activity Behavior Deviation Detection for Nursing Home using IoT Devices

With the advancement of the Internet of Things(IoT) and pervasive computing applications, it provides a better opportunity to understand the behavior of the aging population. However, in a nursing home scenario, common sensors and techniques used to track an elderly living alone are not suitable. In this paper, we design a location-based tracking system for a four-story nursing home - The Salvation Army, Peacehaven Nursing Home in Singapore. The main challenge here is to identify the group activity among the nursing home's residents and to detect if they have any deviated activity behavior. We propose a location-based deviated activity behavior detection system to detect deviated activity behavior by leveraging data fusion technique. In order to compute the features for data fusion, an adaptive method is applied for extracting the group and individual activity time and generate daily hybrid norm for each of the residents. Next, deviated activity behavior detection is executed by considering the difference between daily norm patterns and daily input data for each resident. Lastly, the deviated activity behavior among the residents are classified using a rule-based classification approach. Through the implementation, there are 44.4% of the residents do not have deviated activity behavior , while 37% residents involved in one deviated activity behavior and 18.6% residents have two or more deviated activity behaviors.

Algorithm Unrolling-Based Distributed Optimization for RIS-Assisted Cell-Free Networks

The user-centric cell-free network has emerged as an appealing technology to improve the next-generation wireless network's capacity thanks to its ability to eliminate inter-cell interference effectively. However, the cell-free network inevitably brings in higher hardware cost and backhaul overhead as a larger number of base stations (BSs) are deployed. Additionally, severe channel fading in high-frequency bands constitutes another crucial issue that limits the practical application of the cell-free network. In order to address the above challenges, we amalgamate the cell-free system with another emerging technology, namely reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which can provide high spectrum and energy efficiency with low hardware cost by reshaping the wireless propagation environment intelligently. To this end, we formulate a weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization problem for RIS-assisted cell-free systems by jointly optimizing the BS precoding matrix and the RIS reflection coefficient vector. Subsequently, we transform the complicated WSR problem to a tractable optimization problem and propose a distributed cooperative alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to fully utilize parallel computing resources. Inspired by the model-based algorithm unrolling concept, we unroll our solver to a learning-based deep distributed ADMM (D-ADMM) network framework. To improve the efficiency of the D-ADMM in distributed BSs, we develop a monodirectional information exchange strategy with a small signaling overhead. In addition to benefiting from domain knowledge, D-ADMM adaptively learns hyper-parameters and non-convex solvers of the intractable RIS design problem through data-driven end-to-end training.

Digital Twin for Real-time Li-ion Battery State of Health Estimation with Partially Discharged Cycling Data

To meet the fairly high safety and reliability requirements in practice, the state of health (SOH) estimation of Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which has a close relationship with the degradation performance, has been extensively studied with the widespread applications of various electronics. The conventional SOH estimation approaches with digital twin are end-of-cycle estimation that require the completion of a full charge/discharge cycle to observe the maximum available capacity. However, under dynamic operating conditions with partially discharged data, it is impossible to sense accurate real-time SOH estimation for LIBs. To bridge this research gap, we put forward a digital twin framework to gain the capability of sensing the battery's SOH on the fly, updating the physical battery model. The proposed digital twin solution consists of three core components to enable real-time SOH estimation without requiring a complete discharge. First, to handle the variable training cycling data, the energy discrepancy-aware cycling synchronization is proposed to align cycling data with guaranteeing the same data structure. Second, to explore the temporal importance of different training sampling times, a time-attention SOH estimation model is developed with data encoding to capture the degradation behavior over cycles, excluding adverse influences of unimportant samples. Finally, for online implementation, a similarity analysis-based data reconstruction has been put forward to provide real-time SOH estimation without requiring a full discharge cycle. Through a series of results conducted on a widely used benchmark, the proposed method yields the real-time SOH estimation with errors less than 1% for most sampling times in ongoing cycles.

Clustering and Analysis of GPS Trajectory Data using Distance-based Features

The proliferation of smartphones has accelerated mobility studies by largely increasing the type and volume of mobility data available. One such source of mobility data is from GPS technology, which is becoming increasingly common and helps the research community understand mobility patterns of people. However, there lacks a standardized framework for studying the different mobility patterns created by the non-Work, non-Home locations of Working and Nonworking users on Workdays and Offdays using machine learning methods. We propose a new mobility metric, Daily Characteristic Distance, and use it to generate features for each user together with Origin-Destination matrix features. We then use those features with an unsupervised machine learning method, $k$-means clustering, and obtain three clusters of users for each type of day (Workday and Offday). Finally, we propose two new metrics for the analysis of the clustering results, namely User Commonality and Average Frequency. By using the proposed metrics, interesting user behaviors can be discerned and it helps us to better understand the mobility patterns of the users.

Active 3D Double-RIS-Aided Multi-User Communications: Two-Timescale-Based Separate Channel Estimation via Bayesian Learning

Double-reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique, achieving a substantial gain improvement compared to single-RIS techniques. However, in double-RIS-aided systems, accurate channel estimation is more challenging than in single-RIS-aided systems. This work solves the problem of double-RIS-based channel estimation based on active RIS architectures with only one radio frequency (RF) chain. Since the slow time-varying channels, i.e., the BS-RIS 1, BS-RIS 2, and RIS 1-RIS 2 channels, can be obtained with active RIS architectures, a novel multi-user two-timescale channel estimation protocol is proposed to minimize the pilot overhead. First, we propose an uplink training scheme for slow time-varying channel estimation, which can effectively address the double-reflection channel estimation problem. With channels' sparisty, a low-complexity Singular Value Decomposition Multiple Measurement Vector-Based Compressive Sensing (SVD-MMV-CS) framework with the line-of-sight (LoS)-aided off-grid MMV expectation maximization-based generalized approximate message passing (M-EM-GAMP) algorithm is proposed for channel parameter recovery. For fast time-varying channel estimation, based on the estimated large-timescale channels, a measurements-augmentation-estimate (MAE) framework is developed to decrease the pilot overhead.Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of pilot overhead and computing complexity is conducted. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed multi-user two-timescale estimation strategy and the low-complexity Bayesian CS framework.

A Universal Framework of Superimposed RIS-Phase Modulation for MISO Communication

To fully exploit the additional dimension brought by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), it is recently suggested by information theory that modulating information upon RIS phases is able to send extra information with increased communication rate. In this paper, we propose a novel superimposed RIS-phase modulation (SRPM) scheme to transfer extra messages by superimposing information-bearing phase offsets to conventionally optimized RIS phases. The proposed SRPM is interpreted as a universal framework for RIS phase modulation. Theoretical union bound of the average bit error rate (ABER) of the proposed SRPM is also derived with the maximum likelihood (ML) detection. The diversity order is characterized as 0.5 for all parameter settings, which is useful for determining the optimal choice of the phase modulation parameters. Furthermore, we discover that doubling the number of either RIS reflecting elements or the transmit antennas is equivalent to a 3 dB increment in the transmit power for SRPM. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of SRPM and reveal that it achieves reliable communication of more bits than existing schemes.

Codebook-Based Solutions for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces and Their Open Challenges

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) is a revolutionary technology to cost-effectively improve the performance of wireless networks. We first review the existing framework of channel estimation and passive beamforming (CE & PBF) in RIS-assisted communication systems. To reduce the excessive pilot signaling overhead and implementation complexity of the CE & PBF framework, we conceive a codebook-based framework to strike flexible tradeoffs between communication performance and signaling overhead. Moreover, we provide useful insights into the codebook design and learning mechanisms of the RIS reflection pattern. Finally, we analyze the scalability of the proposed framework by flexibly adapting the training overhead to the specified quality-of-service requirements and then elaborate on its appealing advantages over the existing CE & PBF approaches. It is shown that our novel codebook-based framework can be beneficially applied to all RIS-assisted scenarios and avoids the curse of model dependency faced by its existing counterparts, thus constituting a competitive solution for practical RIS-assisted communication systems.

Column Generation for Optimization Problems in Communication Networks

Numerous communication networks are emerging to serve the various demands and improve the quality of service. Heterogeneous users have different requirements on quality metrics such as delay and service efficiency. Besides, the networks are equipped with different types and amounts of resources, and how to efficiently optimize the usage of such limited resources to serve more users is the key issue for communication networks. One powerful mathematical optimization mechanism to solve the above issue is column generation (CG), which can deal with the optimization problems with complicating constraints and block angular structures. In this paper, we first review the preliminaries of CG. Further, the branch-and-price (BP) algorithm is elaborated, which is designed by embedding CG into the branch-and-bound scheme to efficiently obtain the optimal solution. The applications of CG and BP in various communication networks are then provided, such as space-air-ground networks and device-to-device networks. In short, our goal is to help readers refine the applications of the CG optimization tool in terms of problem formulation and solution. We also discuss the possible challenges and prospective directions when applying CG in the communication networks.

Robust Security Energy Efficiency Optimization for RIS-Aided Cell-Free Networks with Multiple Eavesdroppers

In this paper, we investigate the energy efficiency (EE) problem under reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided secure cell-free networks, where multiple legitimate users and eavesdroppers (Eves) exist. We formulate a max-min secure EE optimization problem by jointly designing the distributed active beamforming and artificial noise at base stations as well as the passive beamforming at RISs under practical constraints. To deal with it, we first divide the original optimization problem into two sub-ones, and then propose an iterative optimization algorithm to solve each sub-problem based on the fractional programming, constrained convex-convex procedure (CCCP) and semi-definite programming (SDP) techniques. After that, these two sub-problems are alternatively solved until convergence, and the final solutions are obtained. Next, we extend to the imperfect channel state information of the Eves' links, and investigate the robust SEE beamforming optimization problem by bringing the outage probability constraints. Based on this, we first transform the uncertain outage probability constraints into the certain ones by the bernstein-type inequality and sphere boundary techniques, and then propose an alternatively iterative algorithm to obtain the solutions of the original problem based on the S-procedure, successive convex approximation, CCCP and SDP techniques. Finally, the simulation results are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Tri-Polarized Holographic MIMO Surface in Near-Field: Channel Modeling and Precoding Design

This paper investigates the utilization of triple polarization (TP) for multi-user (MU) holographic multiple-input multi-output surface (HMIMOS) wireless communication systems, targeting capacity boosting and diversity exploitation without enlarging the antenna array sizes. We specifically consider that both the transmitter and receiver are both equipped with an HMIMOS consisting of compact sub-wavelength TP patch antennas within the near-field (NF) regime. To characterize TP MU-HMIMOS systems, a TP NF channel model is constructed using the dyadic Green's function, whose characteristics are leveraged to design two precoding schemes for mitigating the cross-polarization and inter-user interference contributions. Specifically, a user-cluster-based precoding scheme assigns different users to one of three polarizations at the expense of the system's diversity, and a two-layer precoding scheme removes interference using the Gaussian elimination method at a high computational cost. The theoretical correlation analysis for HMIMOS in the NF region is also investigated, revealing that both the spacing of transmit patch antennas and user distance impact transmit correlation factors. Our numerical results show that the users far from transmitting HMIMOS experience higher correlation than those closer within the NF regime, resulting in a lower channel capacity. Meanwhile, in terms of channel capacity, TP HMIMOS can almost achieve 1.25 times gain compared with dual-polarized HMIMOS, and 3 times compared with conventional HMIMOS. In addition, the proposed two-layer precoding scheme combined with two-layer power allocation realizes a higher spectral efficiency than other schemes without sacrificing diversity.

Deep Learning-Based Channel Estimation for Double-RIS Aided Massive MIMO System

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless communication networks due to its fast and low-cost configuration. In this letter, we consider the estimation of cascaded channels in a double-RIS aided massive multiple-input multiple-output system, which is a critical challenge due to the large number of antennas equipped at the base station and passive RIS elements. To tackle this challenge, we propose a skip-connection attention (SC-attention) network that utilizes self-attention layers and skip-connection structure to improve the channel estimation performance from the noisy pilot-based observations. Simulation results compare the proposed SC-attention network with other benchmark methods and show that SC-attention network can effectively improve the accuracy performance on normalized mean square error (NMSE) for cascaded links in a double-RIS aided system.

Energy-Efficient Cell-Free Network Assisted by Hybrid RISs

In this letter, we investigate a cell-free network aided by hybrid reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which consists of a mixture of passive and active elements that are capable of amplifying and reflecting the incident signal. To maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system, we formulate a joint transmit beamforming and RIS coefficients optimization problem. To deal with the fractional objective function, Dinkelbach transform, Lagrangian dual reformulation, and quadratic transform are utilized, with a block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm proposed to decouple the variables. In addition, successive convex approximation (SCA) method is applied to iteratively to tackle the non-convexity of the sub-problems. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness and convergence of the proposed algorithm through analyzing the EE and sum rate performance with varying parameter settings. The proposed hybrid RISs schemes can achieve 92% of the sum rate but 188% of EE of active RISs schemes. As compared with passive RISs, 11% gain in sum rate can be achieved with comparable EE.
