Distributed User Scheduling for MIMO-Y Channel

In this paper, distributed user scheduling schemes are proposed for the multi-user MIMO-Y channel, where three $N_{T}$-antenna users ($N_{T}=2N,\,3N$) are selected from three clusters to exchange information via an $N_{R}$-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay ($N_{R}=3N$), and $N\geq1$ represents the number of data stream(s) of each unicast transmission within the MIMO-Y channel. The proposed schemes effectively harvest multi-user diversity (MuD) without the need of global channel state information (CSI) or centralized computations. In particular, a novel reference signal space (RSS) is proposed to enable the distributed scheduling for both cluster-wise (CS) and group-wise (GS) patterns. The minimum user-antenna (Min-UA) transmission with $N_{T}=2N$ is first considered. Next, we consider an equal number of relay and user antenna (ER-UA) transmission with ${N_{T}=3N}$, with the aim of reducing CSI overhead as compared to Min-UA. For ER-UA transmission, the achievable MuD orders of the proposed distributed scheduling schemes are analytically derived, which proves the superiority and optimality of the proposed RSS-based distributed scheduling. These results reveal some fundamental behaviors of MuD and the performance-complexity tradeoff of user scheduling schemes in the MIMO-Y channel.

Joint Transceiver Design for Wireless Sensor Networks through Block Coordinate Descent Optimization

This paper considers the joint transceiver design in a wireless sensor network where multiple sensors observe the same physical event and transmit their contaminated observations to a fusion center, with all nodes equipped with multiple antennae and linear filters. Under the mean square error (MSE) criterion, the joint beamforming design problem can be formulated as a nonconvex optimization problem. To attack this problem, various block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithms are proposed with convergence being carefully examined. First we propose a two block coordinate descent (2-BCD) algorithm that iteratively designs all the beamformers and the linear receiver, where both subproblems are convex and the convergence of limit points to stationary points is guaranteed. Besides, the thorough solution to optimizing one single beamformer is given, which, although discussed several times, is usually incomplete in existing literature. Based on that, multiple block coordinate descent algorithms are proposed. Solving the joint beamformers' design by cyclically updating each separate beamformer under the 2-BCD framework gives birth to a layered BCD algorithm, which guarantees convergence to stationary points. Besides that, a wide class of multiple BCD algorithms using the general essentially cyclic updating rule has been studied. As will be seen, by appropriately adjusting the update of single beamformer, fast converging, highly efficient and stationary point achieving algorithms can be obtained. Extensive numerical results are presented to verify our findings.

Local Codes with Addition Based Repair

We consider the complexities of repair algorithms for locally repairable codes and propose a class of codes that repair single node failures using addition operations only, or codes with addition based repair. We construct two families of codes with addition based repair. The first family attains distance one less than the Singleton-like upper bound, while the second family attains the Singleton-like upper bound.

Large System Analysis of Cognitive Radio Network via Partially-Projected Regularized Zero-Forcing Precoding

In this paper, we consider a cognitive radio (CR) network in which a secondary multiantenna base station (BS) attempts to communicate with multiple secondary users (SUs) using the radio frequency spectrum that is originally allocated to multiple primary users (PUs). Here, we employ partially-projected regularized zero-forcing (PP-RZF) precoding to control the amount of interference at the PUs and to minimize inter-SUs interference. The PP-RZF precoding partially projects the channels of the SUs into the null space of the channels from the secondary BS to the PUs. The regularization parameter and the projection control parameter are used to balance the transmissions to the PUs and the SUs. However, the search for the optimal parameters, which can maximize the ergodic sum-rate of the CR network, is a demanding process because it involves Monte-Carlo averaging. Then, we derive a deterministic expression for the ergodic sum-rate achieved by the PP-RZF precoding using recent advancements in large dimensional random matrix theory. The deterministic equivalent enables us to efficiently determine the two critical parameters in the PP-RZF precoding because no Monte-Carlo averaging is required. Several insights are also obtained through the analysis.

Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Techniques for Physical Layer Security: AF or DF?

In this paper, we consider a large scale multiple input multiple output (LS-MIMO) relaying system, where an information source sends the message to its intended destination aided by an LS-MIMO relay, while a passive eavesdropper tries to intercept the information forwarded by the relay. The advantage of a large scale antenna array is exploited to improve spectral efficiency and enhance wireless security. In particular, the challenging issue incurred by short-distance interception is well addressed. Under very practical assumptions, i.e., no eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate CSI at the relay, this paper gives a thorough secrecy performance analysis and comparison of two classic relaying techniques, i.e., amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF). Furthermore, asymptotical analysis is carried out to provide clear insights on the secrecy performance for such an LS-MIMO relaying system. We show that under large transmit powers, AF is a better choice than DF from the perspectives of both secrecy performance and implementation complexity, and prove that there exits an optimal transmit power at medium regime that maximizes the secrecy outage capacity.

Weakly Secure MDS Codes for Simple Multiple Access Networks

We consider a simple multiple access network (SMAN), where $k$ sources of unit rates transmit their data to a common sink via $n$ relays. Each relay is connected to the sink and to certain sources. A coding scheme (for the relays) is weakly secure if a passive adversary who eavesdrops on less than $k$ relay-sink links cannot reconstruct the data from each source. We show that there exists a weakly secure maximum distance separable (MDS) coding scheme for the relays if and only if every subset of $\ell$ relays must be collectively connected to at least $\ell+1$ sources, for all $0 < \ell < k$. Moreover, we prove that this condition can be verified in polynomial time in $n$ and $k$. Finally, given a SMAN satisfying the aforementioned condition, we provide another polynomial time algorithm to trim the network until it has a sparsest set of source-relay links that still supports a weakly secure MDS coding scheme.

Locally Encodable and Decodable Codes for Distributed Storage Systems

We consider the locality of encoding and decoding operations in distributed storage systems (DSS), and propose a new class of codes, called locally encodable and decodable codes (LEDC), that provides a higher degree of operational locality compared to currently known codes. For a given locality structure, we derive an upper bound on the global distance and demonstrate the existence of an optimal LEDC for sufficiently large field size. In addition, we also construct two families of optimal LEDC for fields with size linear in code length.

Multi-Antenna Relay Aided Wireless Physical Layer Security

With growing popularity of mobile Internet, providing secure wireless services has become a critical issue. Physical layer security (PHY-security) has been recognized as an effective means to enhance wireless security by exploiting wireless medium characteristics, e.g., fading, noise, and interference. A particularly interesting PHY-security technology is cooperative relay due to the fact that it helps to provide distributed diversity and shorten access distance. This article offers a tutorial on various multi-antenna relaying technologies to improve security at physical layer. The state of the art research results on multi-antenna relay aided PHY-security as well as some secrecy performance optimization schemes are presented. In particular, we focus on large-scale MIMO (LS-MIMO) relaying technology, which is effective to tackle various challenging issues for implementing wireless PHY-security, such as short-distance interception without eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and with imperfect legitimate CSI. Moreover, the future directions are identified for further enhancement of secrecy performance.

Location Identification of Power Line Outages Using PMU Measurements with Bad Data

The use of phasor angle measurements provided by phasor measurement units (PMUs) in fault detection is regarded as a promising method in identifying locations of power line outages. However, communication errors or system malfunctions may introduce errors to the measurements and thus yield bad data. Most of the existing methods on line outage identification fail to consider such error. This paper develops a framework for identifying multiple power line outages based on the PMUs' measurements in the presence of bad data. In particular, we design an algorithm to identify locations of line outage and recover the faulty measurements simultaneously. The proposed algorithm does not require any prior information on the number of line outages and the noise variance. Case studies carried out on test systems of different sizes validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Customer Engagement Plans for Peak Load Reduction in Residential Smart Grids

In this paper, we propose and study the effectiveness of customer engagement plans that clearly specify the amount of intervention in customer's load settings by the grid operator for peak load reduction. We suggest two different types of plans, including Constant Deviation Plans (CDPs) and Proportional Deviation Plans (PDPs). We define an adjustable reference temperature for both CDPs and PDPs to limit the output temperature of each thermostat load and to control the number of devices eligible to participate in Demand Response Program (DRP). We model thermostat loads as power throttling devices and design algorithms to evaluate the impact of power throttling states and plan parameters on peak load reduction. Based on the simulation results, we recommend PDPs to the customers of a residential community with variable thermostat set point preferences, while CDPs are suitable for customers with similar thermostat set point preferences. If thermostat loads have multiple power throttling states, customer engagement plans with less temperature deviations from thermostat set points are recommended. Contrary to classical ON/OFF control, higher temperature deviations are required to achieve similar amount of peak load reduction. Several other interesting tradeoffs and useful guidelines for designing mutually beneficial incentives for both the grid operator and customers can also be identified.

On the Solvability of 3s/nt Sum-Network---A Region Decomposition and Weak Decentralized Code Method

We study the network coding problem of sum-networks with 3 sources and n terminals (3s/nt sum-network), for an arbitrary positive integer n, and derive a sufficient and necessary condition for the solvability of a family of so-called terminal-separable sum-network. Both the condition of terminal-separable and the solvability of a terminal-separable sum-network can be decided in polynomial time. Consequently, we give another necessary and sufficient condition, which yields a faster (O(|E|) time) algorithm than that of Shenvi and Dey ([18], (O(|E|^3) time), to determine the solvability of the 3s/3t sum-network. To obtain the results, we further develop the region decomposition method in [22], [23] and generalize the decentralized coding method in [21]. Our methods provide new efficient tools for multiple source multiple sink network coding problems.

On Interference Alignment with Imperfect CSI: Characterizations of Outage Probability, Ergodic Rate and SER

In this paper, we give a unified performance analysis of interference alignment (IA) over MIMO interference channels. Rather than the asymptotic characterization, i.e. degree of freedom (DOF) at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we focus on the other practical performance metrics, namely outage probability, ergodic rate and symbol error rate (SER). In particular, we consider imperfect IA due to the fact that the transmitters usually have only imperfect channel state information (CSI) in practical scenario. By characterizing the impact of imperfect CSI, we derive the exact closed-form expressions of outage probability, ergodic rate and SER in terms of CSI accuracy, transmit SNR, channel condition, number of antennas, and the number of data streams of each communication pair. Furthermore, we obtain some important guidelines for performance optimization of IA under imperfect CSI by minimizing the performance loss over IA with perfect CSI. Finally, our theoretical claims are validated by simulation results.

On the Effect of I/Q Imbalance on Energy Detection and a Novel Four-Level Hypothesis Spectrum Sensing

Direct-conversion transceivers are in demand, due to low implementation cost of analog front-ends. However, these transmitters or receivers introduce imperfections such as in-phase and quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalances. In this paper, we first investigate the effect of I/Q imbalance on the performance of primary system, and show that these impairments can severely degrade the performance of cognitive radio system that are based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) multiple access scheme. Next, we design a new four-level hypothesis blind detector for spectrum sensing in such cognitive radio system, and show that the proposed detector is less vulnerable to I/Q imbalance than conventional two-level detectors.

On Sparse Vector Recovery Performance in Structurally Orthogonal Matrices via LASSO

In this paper, we consider a compressed sensing problem of reconstructing a sparse signal from an undersampled set of noisy linear measurements. The regularized least squares or least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) formulation is used for signal estimation. The measurement matrix is assumed to be constructed by concatenating several randomly orthogonal bases, referred to as structurally orthogonal matrices. Such measurement matrix is highly relevant to large-scale compressive sensing applications because it facilitates fast computation and also supports parallel processing. Using the replica method from statistical physics, we derive the mean-squared-error (MSE) formula of reconstruction over the structurally orthogonal matrix in the large-system regime. Extensive numerical experiments are provided to verify the analytical result. We then use the analytical result to study the MSE behaviors of LASSO over the structurally orthogonal matrix, with a particular focus on performance comparisons to matrices with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian entries. We demonstrate that the structurally orthogonal matrices are at least as well performed as their i.i.d. Gaussian counterparts, and therefore the use of structurally orthogonal matrices is highly motivated in practical applications.

Secure Erasure Codes With Partial Decodability

The MDS property (aka the $k$-out-of-$n$ property) requires that if a file is split into several symbols and subsequently encoded into $n$ coded symbols, each being stored in one storage node of a distributed storage system (DSS), then an user can recover the file by accessing any $k$ nodes. We study the so-called $p$-decodable $μ$-secure erasure coding scheme $(1 \leq p \leq k - μ, 0 \leq μ< k, p | (k-μ))$, which satisfies the MDS property and the following additional properties: (P1) strongly secure up to a threshold: an adversary which eavesdrops at most $μ$ storage nodes gains no information (in Shannon's sense) about the stored file, (P2) partially decodable: a legitimate user can recover a subset of $p$ file symbols by accessing some $μ+ p$ storage nodes. The scheme is perfectly $p$-decodable $μ$-secure if it satisfies the following additional property: (P3) weakly secure up to a threshold: an adversary which eavesdrops more than $μ$ but less than $μ+p$ storage nodes cannot reconstruct any part of the file. Most of the related work in the literature only focused on the case $p = k - μ$. In other words, no partial decodability is provided: an user cannot retrieve any part of the file by accessing less than $k$ nodes. We provide an explicit construction of $p$-decodable $μ$-secure coding schemes over small fields for all $μ$ and $p$. That construction also produces perfectly $p$-decodable $μ$-secure schemes over small fields when $p = 1$ (for every $μ$), and when $μ= 0, 1$ (for every $p$). We establish that perfect schemes exist over \emph{sufficiently large} fields for almost all $μ$ and $p$.

Demand Response Management For Power Throttling Air Conditioning Loads In Residential Smart Grids

In this paper we develop an algorithm for peak load reduction to reduce the impact of increased air conditioner usage in a residential smart grid community. We develop Demand Response Management (DRM) plans that clearly spell out the maximum duration as well as maximum severity of inconvenience. We model the air conditioner as a power throttling device and for any given DRM plan we study the impact of increasing the number of power states on the resulting peak load reduction. Through simulations, we find out that adding just one additional state to the basic ON/OFF model, which can throttle power to 50% of the rated air conditioner power, can result in significant amount of peak reduction. However, the peak load that can be reduced is diminishing with the increase in number of states. Furthermore, we also observe the impact of inconvenience duration and inconvenience severity in terms of peak load reduction. These observations can serve as useful guidelines for developing appropriate DRM plans.

Exploiting Large-Scale MIMO Techniques for Physical Layer Security with Imperfect Channel State Information

In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in large-scale multiple input multiple output (LS-MIMO) systems. The large number of antenna elements in LS-MIMO system is exploited to enhance transmission security and improve system performance, especially when the eavesdropper is closer to the information source and has more antennas than the legitimate user. However, in practical systems, the problem becomes challenging because the eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) is usually unavailable without cooperation and the legitimate CSI may be imperfect due to channel estimation error. In this paper, we first analyze the performance of physical layer security without eavesdropper CSI and with imperfect legitimate CSI, and then propose an energy-efficient power allocation scheme to meet the demand for wireless security and quality of service (QoS) simultaneously. Finally, numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Feasibility of Using Discriminate Pricing Schemes for Energy Trading in Smart Grid

This paper investigates the feasibility of using a discriminate pricing scheme to offset the inconvenience that is experienced by an energy user (EU) in trading its energy with an energy controller in smart grid. The main objective is to encourage EUs with small distributed energy resources (DERs), or with high sensitivity to their inconvenience, to take part in the energy trading via providing incentive to them with relatively higher payment at the same time as reducing the total cost to the energy controller. The proposed scheme is modeled through a two-stage Stackelberg game that describes the energy trading between a shared facility authority (SFA) and EUs in a smart community. A suitable cost function is proposed for the SFA to leverage the generation of discriminate pricing according to the inconvenience experienced by each EU. It is shown that the game has a unique sub-game perfect equilibrium (SPE), under the certain condition at which the SFA's total cost is minimized, and that each EU receives its best utility according to its associated inconvenience for the given price. A backward induction technique is used to derive a closed form expression for the price function at SPE, and thus the dependency of price on an EU's different decision parameters is explained for the studied system. Numerical examples are provided to show the beneficial properties of the proposed scheme.
