Synthetic Generation of Solar States for Smart Grid: A Multiple Segment Markov Chain Apptoach

The use of photovoltaic (PV) sources is becoming very popular in smart grid for their ecological benefits, with higher scalability and utilization for local generation and delivery. PV can also potentially avoid the energy losses that are normally associated with long-range grid distribution. The increased penetration of solar panels, however, has introduced a need for solar energy models that are capable of producing realistic synthetic data with small error margins. Such models, for instance, can be used to design the appropriate size of energy storage devices or to determine the maximum charging rate of a PV-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station. In this regard, this paper proposes a stochastic model for solar generation using a Markov chain approach. Based on real data, it is first shown that the solar states are inter-dependent, and thus suitable for modeling using a Markov model. Then, the probabilities of transition between states are shown to be heterogeneous over different time segments. A model is proposed that captures the inter temporal dependency of solar irradiance through segmentation of the Markov chain across different times of the day. In the studied model, different state transition matrices are constructed for different time segments, which the proposed algorithm then uses to generate the solar states for different times of the day. Numerical examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed synthetic generator.

Power Control for Sum Rate Maximization on Interference Channels Under Sum Power Constraint

In this paper, we consider the problem of power control for sum rate maximization on multiple interfering links (TX-RX pairs)under sum power constraint. We consider a single frequency network, where all pairs are operating in same frequency band, thereby creating interference for each other. We study the power allocation problem for sum rate maximization with and without QoS requirements on individual links. When the objective is only sum rate maximization without QoS guarantees, we develop an analytic solution to decide optimal power allocation for two TX-RX pair problem. We also develop a low complexity iterative algorithm for three TX-RX pair problem. For a generic N>3 TX-RX pair problem, we develop two low-complexity sub-optimal power allocation algorithms. The first algorithm is based on the idea of making clusters of two or three TX-RX pairs and then leverage the power allocation results obtained for two and three TX-RX pair problems. The second algorithm is developed by using a high SINR approximation and this algorithm can also be implemented in a distributed manner by individual TXs. We then consider the same problem but with additional QoS guarantees for individual links. We again develop an analytic solution for two TX-RX pair problem, and a distributed algorithm for N>2 TX-RX pairs.

Joint Optimization of Spectrum Sensing and Accessing in Multiuser MISO Cognitive Networks

In this paper, a joint spectrum sensing and accessing optimization framework for a multiuser cognitive network is proposed to significantly improve spectrum efficiency. For such a cognitive network, there are two important and limited resources that should be distributed in a comprehensive manner, namely feedback bits and time duration. First, regarding the feedback bits, there are two components: sensing component (used to convey various users' sensing results) and accessing component (used to feedback channel state information). A large sensing component can support more users to perform cooperative sensing, which results in high sensing precision. However, a large accessing component is preferred as well, as it has a direct impact on the performance in the multiuser cognitive network when multi-antenna technique, such as zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF), is utilized. Second, the tradeoff of sensing and accessing duration in a transmission interval needs to be determined, so that the sum transmission rate is optimized while satisfying the interference constraint. In addition, the above two resources are interrelated and inversive under some conditions. Specifically, sensing time can be saved by utilizing more sensing feedback bits for a given performance objective. Hence, the resources should be allocation in a jointly manner. Based on the joint optimization framework and the intrinsic relationship between the two resources, we propose two joint resource allocation schemes by maximizing the average sum transmission rate in a multiuser multi-antenna cognitive network. Simulation results show that, by adopting the joint resource allocation schemes, obvious performance gain can be obtained over the traditional fixed strategies.

Distortion-Aware Concurrent Multipath Transfer for Mobile Video Streaming in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

The massive proliferation of wireless infrastructures with complementary characteristics prompts the bandwidth aggregation for Concurrent Multipath Transfer (CMT) over heterogeneous access networks. Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is the standard transport-layer solution to enable CMT in multihomed communication environments. However, delivering high-quality streaming video with the existing CMT solutions still remains problematic due to the stringent QoS (Quality of Service) requirements and path asymmetry in heterogeneous wireless networks. In this paper, we advance the state of the art by introducing video distortion into the decision process of multipath data transfer. The proposed Distortion-Aware Concurrent Multipath Transfer (CMT-DA) solution includes three phases: 1) per-path status estimation and congestion control; 2) quality-optimal video flow rate allocation; 3) delay and loss controlled data retransmission. The term `flow rate allocation' indicates dynamically picking appropriate access networks and assigning the transmission rates. We analytically formulate the data distribution over multiple communication paths to minimize the end-to-end video distortion and derive the solution based on the utility maximization theory. The performance of the proposed CMT-DA is evaluated through extensive semi-physical emulations in Exata involving H.264 video streaming. Experimental results show that CMT-DA outperforms the reference schemes in terms of video PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio), goodput, and inter-packet delay.

Three-Party Energy Management With Distributed Energy Resources in Smart Grid

In this paper, the benefits of distributed energy resources (DERs) are considered in an energy management scheme for a smart community consisting of a large number of residential units (RUs) and a shared facility controller (SFC). A non-cooperative Stackelberg game between RUs and the SFC is proposed in order to explore how both entities can benefit, in terms of achieved utility and minimizing total cost respectively, from their energy trading with each other and the grid. From the properties of the game, it is shown that the maximum benefit to the SFC in terms of reduction in total cost is obtained at the unique and strategy proof Stackelberg equilibrium (SE). It is further shown that the SE is guaranteed to be reached by the SFC and RUs by executing the proposed algorithm in a distributed fashion, where participating RUs comply with their best strategies in response to the action chosen by the SFC. In addition, a charging-discharging scheme is introduced for the SFC's storage device (SD) that can further lower the SFC's total cost if the proposed game is implemented. Numerical experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Ergodic Capacity Comparison of Different Relay Precoding Schemes in Dual-Hop AF Systems with Co-Channel Interference

In this paper, we analyze the ergodic capacity of a dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying system where the relay is equipped with multiple antennas and subject to co-channel interference (CCI) and the additive white Gaussian noise. Specifically, we consider three heuristic precoding schemes, where the relay first applies the 1) maximal-ratio combining (MRC) 2) zero-forcing (ZF) 3) minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) principle to combine the signal from the source, and then steers the transformed signal towards the destination with the maximum ratio transmission (MRT) technique. For the MRC/MRT and MMSE/MRT schemes, we present new tight analytical upper and lower bounds for the ergodic capacity, while for the ZF/MRT scheme, we derive a new exact analytical ergodic capacity expression. Moreover, we make a comparison among all the three schemes, and our results reveal that, in terms of the ergodic capacity performance, the MMSE/MRT scheme always has the best performance and the ZF/MRT scheme is slightly inferior, while the MRC/MRT scheme is always the worst one. Finally, the asymptotic behavior of ergodic capacity for the three proposed schemes are characterized in large $N$ scenario, where $N$ is the number of relay antennas. Our results reveal that, in the large $N$ regime, both the ZF/MRT and MMSE/MRT schemes have perfect interference cancelation capability, which is not possible with the MRC/MRT scheme.

Design of A Scalable Hybrid MAC Protocol for Heterogeneous M2M Networks

A robust and resilient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is crucial for numerous machine-type devices to concurrently access the channel in a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) network. Simplex (reservation or contention based) MAC protocols are studied in most literatures which may not be able to provide a scalable solution for M2M networks with large number of heterogeneous devices. In this paper, a scalable hybrid MAC protocol, which consists of a contention period and a transmission period, is designed for heterogeneous M2M networks. In this protocol, different devices with pre-set priorities (hierarchical contending probabilities) firstly contend the transmission opportunities following the convention based $p$-persistent CSMA mechanism. Only the successful devices will be assigned a time slot for transmission following the reservation based TDMA mechanism. If the devices failed in contention at previous frame, to ensure the fairness among all devices, their contending priorities will be raised by increasing their contending probabilities at the next frame. To balance the tradeoff between the contention and transmission period in each frame, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the channel utility by finding the key design parameters: the contention duration, initial contending probability and the incremental indicator. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Hybrid MAC protocol.

Energy Management for a User Interactive Smart Community: A Stackelberg Game Approach

This paper studies a three party energy management problem in a user interactive smart community that consists of a large number of residential units (RUs) with distributed energy resources (DERs), a shared facility controller (SFC) and the main grid. A Stackelberg game is formulated to benefit both the SFC and RUs, in terms of incurred cost and achieved utility respectively, from their energy trading with each other and the grid. The properties of the game are studied and it is shown that there exists a unique Stackelberg equilibrium (SE). A novel algorithm is proposed that can be implemented in a distributed fashion by both RUs and the SFC to reach the SE. The convergence of the algorithm is also proven, and shown to always reach the SE. Numerical examples are used to assess the properties and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

On Block Security of Regenerating Codes at the MBR Point for Distributed Storage Systems

A passive adversary can eavesdrop stored content or downloaded content of some storage nodes, in order to learn illegally about the file stored across a distributed storage system (DSS). Previous work in the literature focuses on code constructions that trade storage capacity for perfect security. In other words, by decreasing the amount of original data that it can store, the system can guarantee that the adversary, which eavesdrops up to a certain number of storage nodes, obtains no information (in Shannon's sense) about the original data. In this work we introduce the concept of block security for DSS and investigate minimum bandwidth regenerating (MBR) codes that are block secure against adversaries of varied eavesdropping strengths. Such MBR codes guarantee that no information about any group of original data units up to a certain size is revealed, without sacrificing the storage capacity of the system. The size of such secure groups varies according to the number of nodes that the adversary can eavesdrop. We show that code constructions based on Cauchy matrices provide block security. The opposite conclusion is drawn for codes based on Vandermonde matrices.

Limited Feedback-Based Interference Alignment for Interfering Multi-Access Channels

A limited feedback-based interference alignment (IA) scheme is proposed for the interfering multi-access channel (IMAC). By employing a novel performance-oriented quantization strategy, the proposed scheme is able to achieve the minimum overall residual inter-cell interference (ICI) with the optimized transceivers under limited feedback. Consequently, the scheme outperforms the existing counterparts in terms of system throughput. In addition, the proposed scheme can be implemented with flexible antenna configurations.

Performance Analysis and Optimization for Interference Alignment over MIMO Interference Channels with Limited Feedback

In this paper, we address the problem of interference alignment (IA) over MIMO interference channels with limited channel state information (CSI) feedback based on quantization codebooks. Due to limited feedback and hence imperfect IA, there are residual interferences across different links and different data streams. As a result, the performance of IA is greatly related to the CSI accuracy (namely number of feedback bits) and the number of data streams (namely transmission mode). In order to improve the performance of IA, it makes sense to optimize the system parameters according to the channel conditions. Motivated by this, we first give a quantitative performance analysis for IA under limited feedback, and derive a closed-form expression for the average transmission rate in terms of feedback bits and transmission mode. By maximizing the average transmission rate, we obtain an adaptive feedback allocation scheme, as well as a dynamic mode selection scheme. Furthermore, through asymptotic analysis, we obtain several clear insights on the system performance, and provide some guidelines on the system design. Finally, simulation results validate our theoretical claims, and show that obvious performance gain can be obtained by adjusting feedback bits dynamically or selecting transmission mode adaptively.

On the Existence of MDS Codes Over Small Fields With Constrained Generator Matrices

We study the existence over small fields of Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes with generator matrices having specified supports (i.e. having specified locations of zero entries). This problem unifies and simplifies the problems posed in recent works of Yan and Sprintson (NetCod'13) on weakly secure cooperative data exchange, of Halbawi et al. (arxiv'13) on distributed Reed-Solomon codes for simple multiple access networks, and of Dau et al. (ISIT'13) on MDS codes with balanced and sparse generator matrices. We conjecture that there exist such $[n,k]_q$ MDS codes as long as $q \geq n + k - 1$, if the specified supports of the generator matrices satisfy the so-called MDS condition, which can be verified in polynomial time. We propose a combinatorial approach to tackle the conjecture, and prove that the conjecture holds for a special case when the sets of zero coordinates of rows of the generator matrix share with each other (pairwise) at most one common element. Based on our numerical result, the conjecture is also verified for all $k \leq 7$. Our approach is based on a novel generalization of the well-known Hall's marriage theorem, which allows (overlapping) multiple representatives instead of a single representative for each subset.

Network Coding for $3$s$/n$t Sum-Networks

A sum-network is a directed acyclic network where each source independently generates one symbol from a given field $\mathbb F$ and each terminal wants to receive the sum $($over $\mathbb F)$ of the source symbols. For sum-networks with two sources or two terminals, the solvability is characterized by the connection condition of each source-terminal pair [3]. A necessary and sufficient condition for the solvability of the $3$-source $3$-terminal $(3$s$/3$t$)$ sum-networks was given by Shenvi and Dey [6]. However, the general case of arbitrary sources/sinks is still open. In this paper, we investigate the sum-network with three sources and $n$ sinks using a region decomposition method. A sufficient and necessary condition is established for a class of $3$s$/n$t sum-networks. As a direct application of this result, a necessary and sufficient condition of solvability is obtained for the special case of $3$s$/3$t sum-networks.

On the Secrecy Outage Capacity of Physical Layer Security in Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Systems with Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in a large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) relaying system. The advantage of LS-MIMO relaying systems is exploited to enhance both wireless security and spectral efficiency. In particular, the challenging issue incurred by short interception distance is well addressed. Under very practical assumptions, i.e., no eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate channel CSI, this paper gives a thorough investigation of the impact of imperfect CSI in two classic relaying systems, i.e., amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) systems, and obtain explicit expressions of secrecy outage capacities for both cases. Finally, our theoretical claims are validated by the numerical results.

Outage Probability of Dual-Hop Multiple Antenna AF Systems with Linear Processing in the Presence of Co-Channel Interference

This paper considers a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system where the relay is equipped with multiple antennas, while the source and the destination are equipped with a single antenna. Assuming that the relay is subjected to co-channel interference (CCI) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) while the destination is corrupted by AWGN only, we propose three heuristic relay precoding schemes to combat the CCI, namely, 1) Maximum ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission (MRC/MRT), 2) Zero-forcing/MRT (ZF/MRT), 3) Minimum mean-square error/MRT (MMSE/MRT). We derive new exact outage expressions as well as simple high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) outage approximations for all three schemes. Our findings suggest that both the MRC/MRT and the MMSE/MRT schemes achieve a full diversity of N, while the ZF/MRT scheme achieves a diversity order of N-M, where N is the number of relay antennas and M is the number of interferers. In addition, we show that the MMSE/MRT scheme always achieves the best outage performance, and the ZF/MRT scheme outperforms the MRC/MRT scheme in the low SNR regime, while becomes inferior to the MRC/MRT scheme in the high SNR regime. Finally, in the large N regime, we show that both the ZF/MRT and MMSE/MRT schemes are capable of completely eliminating the CCI, while perfect interference cancelation is not possible with the MRC/MRT scheme.

Low-complexity End-to-End Performance Optimization in MIMO Full-Duplex Relay Systems

In this paper, we deal with the deployment of full-duplex relaying in amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative networks with multiple-antenna terminals. In contrast to previous studies, which focus on the spatial mitigation of the loopback interference (LI) at the relay node, a joint precoding/decoding design that maximizes the end-to-end (e2e) performance is investigated. The proposed precoding incorporates rank-1 zero-forcing (ZF) LI suppression at the relay node and is derived in closed-form by solving appropriate optimization problems. In order to further reduce system complexity, the antenna selection (AS) problem for full-duplex AF cooperative systems is discussed. We investigate different AS schemes to select a single transmit antenna at both the source and the relay, as well as a single receive antenna at both the relay and the destination. To facilitate comparison, exact outage probability expressions and asymptotic approximations of the proposed AS schemes are provided. In order to overcome zero-diversity effects associated with the AS operation, a simple power allocation scheme at the relay node is also investigated and its optimal value is analytically derived. Numerical and simulation results show that the joint ZF-based precoding significantly improves e2e performance, while AS schemes are efficient solutions for scenarios with strict computational constraints.

Coding based Data Broadcasting for Time Critical Applications with Rate Adaptation

In this paper, we dynamically select the transmission rate and design wireless network coding to improve the quality of services such as delay for time critical applications. In a network coded system, with low transmission rate and hence longer transmission range, more packets may be encoded, which increases the coding opportunity. However, low transmission rate may incur extra transmission delay, which is intolerable for time critical applications. We design a novel joint rate selection and wireless network coding (RSNC) scheme with delay constraint, so as to maximize the total benefit (where we can define the benefit based on the priority or importance of a packet for example) of the packets that are successfully received at the destinations without missing their deadlines. We prove that the proposed problem is NP-hard, and propose a novel graph model to mathematically formulate the problem. For the general case, we propose a transmission metric and design an efficient algorithm to determine the transmission rate and coding strategy for each transmission. For a special case when all delay constraints are the same, we study the pairwise coding and present a polynomial time pairwise coding algorithm that achieves an approximation ratio of 1 - 1/e to the optimal pairwise coding solution, where e is the base of the natural logarithm. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed RSNC scheme.

Resource Allocation for Cost Minimization in Limited Feedback MU-MIMO Systems with Delay Guarantee

In this paper, we design a resource allocation framework for the delay-sensitive Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) broadcast system with limited feedback. Considering the scarcity and interrelation of the transmit power and feedback bandwidth, it is imperative to optimize the two resources in a joint and efficient manner while meeting the delay-QoS requirement. Based on the effective bandwidth theory, we first obtain a closed-form expression of average violation probability with respect to a given delay requirement as a function of transmit power and codebook size of feedback channel. By minimizing the total resource cost, we derive an optimal joint resource allocation scheme, which can flexibly adjust the transmit power and feedback bandwidth according to the characteristics of the system. Moreover, through asymptotic analysis, some simple resource allocation schemes are presented. Finally, the theoretical claims are validated by numerical results.
