Effects of energy conservation on equilibrium properties of hot asymmetric nuclear matter

Based on the relativistic Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model, which includes relativistic scalar and vector potentials on baryons, we consider a $N-Δ-π$ system in a box with periodic boundary conditions to study the effects of energy conservation in particle production and absorption processes on the equilibrium properties of the system. The density and temperature of the matter in the box are taken to be similar to the hot dense matter formed in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies. We find that to maintain the equilibrium numbers of $N$, $Δ$ and $π$, which depend on the mean-field potentials of $N$ and $Δ$, requires the inclusion of these potentials in the energy conservation condition that determines the momenta of outgoing particles after a scattering or decay process. We further find that the baryon scalar potentials mainly affect the $Δ$ and pion equilibrium numbers, while the baryon vector potentials have considerable effects on the effective charged pion ratio at equilibrium. Our results thus indicate that it is essential to include in the transport model the effect of potentials in the energy conservation of a scattering or decay process, which is ignored in most transport models, for studying pion production in heavy ion collisions.

Light nuclei production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV

Using the coalescence model based on the phase-space distribution of nucleons from an extended blast-wave model that includes the space-momentum correlation of high momentum nucleons, we study the transverse momentum spectra and elliptic flows of deuteron and helium-3 in Pb+Pb collisions at the energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. We find that the measured elliptic flows of deuteron can be satisfactorily described if nucleons of large transverse momenta are more spread in space when their momenta are more aligned along the reaction plane.

Probing QCD critical fluctuations from light nuclei production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Based on the coalescence model for light nuclei production, we show that the yield ratio $\mathcal{O}_\text{p-d-t} = N_{^3\text{H}} N_p / N_\text{d}^2$ of $p$, d, and $^3$H in heavy-ion collisions is sensitive to the neutron relative density fluctuation $Δn= \langle (δn)^2\rangle/\langle n\rangle^2$ at kinetic freeze-out. From recent experimental data in central Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=6.3$~GeV, $7.6$~GeV, $8.8$~GeV, $12.3$~GeV and $17.3$~GeV measured by the NA49 Collaboration at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), we find a possible non-monotonic behavior of $Δn$ as a function of the collision energy with a peak at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.8$~GeV, indicating that the density fluctuations become the largest in collisions at this energy. With the known chemical freeze-out conditions determined from the statistical model fit to experimental data, we obtain a chemical freeze-out temperature of $\sim 144~$MeV and baryon chemical potential of $\sim 385~$MeV at this collision energy, which are close to the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram predicted by various theoretical studies. Our results thus suggest the potential usefulness of the yield ratio of light nuclei in relativistic heavy-ion collisions as a direct probe of the large density fluctuations associated with the QCD critical phenomena.

Lambda hyperon polarization in relativistic heavy ion collisions from the chiral kinetic approach

Based on the chiral kinetic approach using initial conditions from a multiphase transport model, we study the spin polarizations of quarks and antiquarks in non-central heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Because of the non-vanishing vorticity field in these collisions, quarks and antiquarks are found to acquire appreciable spin polarizations in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane. Converting quarks and antiquarks to hadrons via the coalescence model, we further calculate the spin polarizations of Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperons and find their values comparable to those measured in experiments by the STAR Collaboration.

Chemical freeze-out in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

One surprising result in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is that the abundance of various particles measured in experiments is consistent with the picture that they reach chemical equilibrium at a temperature much higher than the temperature they freeze out kinetically. Using a multiphase transport model to study particle production in these collisions, we find that the above result is due to the constancy of the entropy per particle during the evolution of the hadronic matter from the chemical to the kinetic freeze-out. We further use a hadron resonance gas model to illustrate the result from the transport model study.

Elliptic flows of light nuclei

Using the coalescence model based on nucleons from a blast-wave model with its parameters fitted to the measured proton transverse momentum spectrum and elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we study the elliptic flows of light nuclei in these collisions. We find that to describe the measured elliptic flows of deuterons (anti-deuterons) and tritons (helium-3) requires that the emission source for nucleons of high transverse momentum is more elongated along the reaction plane than in the perpendicular direction. Our results thus suggest that the elliptic flows of light nuclei can be used to study the nucleon emission source in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Three-particle correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions in a multiphase transport model

Using a multiphase transport model, we study three-particle mixed harmonic correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions by considering the observable $C_{m,n,m+n}=\langle\negmedspace\langle \cos(mϕ_1+nϕ_2-(m+n)ϕ_3)\rangle\negmedspace\rangle$, where $ϕ_{1,2,3}$ are azimuthal angles of all particle triplets. We find that except for $C_{123}$, our results on the centrality dependence of $C_{112}$, $C_{224}$ and $C_{235}$ as well as the relative pseudorapidity dependence of $C_{123}$ and $C_{224}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$200 GeV agree reasonable well with the experimental data from the STAR Collaboration. We discuss the implications of our results.

Exotic Hadrons from Heavy Ion Collisions

Heavy ion collisions (HIC) at high energies are excellent ways for producing heavy hadrons and composite particles. With upgraded detectors at RHIC and LHC, it has become possible to measure hadrons beyond their ground states. Therefore, HIC provide a new method for studying exotic hadrons that are either hadronic molecular states or compact multiquark systems. Because their structures are related to the fundamental properties of QCD, studying exotic hadrons is currently one of the most active areas of research in hadron physics. Experiments carried out at various accelerator facilities have indicated that some exotic hadrons may have already been produced. The present review is a summary of the current understanding of a selected set of exotic particle candidates that can be potentially measured in HIC. It also includes discussions on the production of exotic hadrons in HIC based on the coalescence and statistical models. A more detailed discussion leads to the conclusion that the yield of a hadron is typically an order of magnitude smaller when it is a compact multiquark state than that of an excited hadronic state with normal quark numbers and/or a molecular configuration. Attention is also given to some of the proposed heavy exotic hadrons that could be produced with sufficient abundance in HIC because of the significant numbers of charm and bottom quarks produced at RHIC and LHC, making it possible to study them in these experiments. Further included in the discussion are the general formalism for the coalescence model that involves resonance particles and its implication on the present estimated yield for resonance production. Finally, a review is given on recent studies to constrain the hadron-hadron interaction through correlation measurements in HIC and their implications on the interpretation and the possible existence of exotic states in hadronic interactions.

Medium effects on pion production in heavy ion collisions

Within the framework of the relativistic Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model based on the relativistic nonlinear NL$ρ$ interaction, we study pion in-medium effects on the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in Au+Au collisions at the energy of $E/A=400~\mathrm{MeV}$. These effects include the isospin-dependent pion s-wave and p-wave potentials, which are taken from calculations based on the chiral perturbation theory and the $Δ$-hole model, respectively. We find that the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in this collision is suppressed by the pion s-wave potential but enhanced by the p-wave potential, with a net effect of a significantly suppressed $π^-/π^+$ ratio. Including also the in-medium threshold effects on $Δ$ resonance production and decay and using a nuclear symmetry energy with a slope parameter $L=59~\mathrm{MeV}$ by reducing the coupling of isovector-vector $ρ$ meson to nucleon, our result is in good agreement with measured $π^-/π^+$ ratio from the FOPI Collaboration. We further investigate the pion in-medium effects on the ratio of charged pions as a function of their kinetic energies.

Study of chiral vortical and magnetic effects in the anomalous transport model

We extend our recent study of chiral magnetic effect in relativistic heavy ion collisions based on an anomalous transport model by including also the chiral vortical effect. We find that although vorticities in the chirally restored quark matter, which result from the large angular momentum in non-central collisions, can generate an axial charge dipole moment in the transverse plane of a heavy ion collision, it does not produce a difference in the eccentricities of negatively and positively charged particles. As a result, including the chiral vortical effect alone cannot lead to a splitting between the elliptic flows of negatively and positively charged particles. On the other hand, negatively and positively charged particles do develop a splitting in their elliptic flows if the effect due to a strong and long-lived magnetic field is also included. However, to have a positive slope in the dependence of the elliptic flow splitting on the charge asymmetry of the quark matter, as seen in experiments, requires the neglect of the effect of the Lorentz force. In this case, an elliptic flow splitting appears even at vanishing charge asymmetry.

Collision energy dependence of elliptic flow splitting between particles and their antiparticles from an extended multiphase transport model

Based on an extended multiphase transport model, which includes mean-field potentials in both the partonic and hadronic phases, uses the mix-event coalescence, and respects charge conservation during the hadronic evolution, we have studied the collision energy dependence of the elliptic flow splitting between particles and their antiparticles. This extended transport model reproduces reasonably well the experimental data at lower collision energies but only describes qualitatively the elliptic flow splitting at higher beam energies. The present study thus indicates the existence of other mechanisms for the elliptic flow splitting besides the mean-field potentials and the need of further improvements of the multiphase transport model.

Jet Fragmentation via Recombination of Parton Showers

We propose to model hadronization of parton showers in QCD jets through a hybrid approach involving quark recombination and string fragmentation. This is achieved by allowing gluons at the end of the perturbative shower evolution to undergo a non-perturbative splitting into quark and antiquark pairs, then applying a Monte-Carlo version of instantaneous quark recombination, and finally subjecting remnant quarks (those which have not found a recombination partner) to Lund string fragmentation. When applied to parton showers from the PYTHIA Monte Carlo event generator, the final hadron spectra from our calculation compare quite well to PYTHIA jets that have been hadronized with the default Lund string fragmentation. Our new approach opens up the possibility to generalize hadronization to jets embedded in a quark gluon plasma.

Spinodal Instabilities of Baryon-Rich Quark-gluon Plasma in the PNJL Model

Using the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinia (PNJL) model, we study the spinodal instability of a baryon-rich quark-gluon plasma in the linear response theory. We find that the spinodal unstable region in the temperature and density plane shrinks with increasing wave number of the unstable mode and is also reduced if the effect of Polyakov loop is not included. In the small wave number or long wavelength limit, the spinodal boundaries in both cases of with and without the Polyakov loop coincide with those determined from the isothermal spinodal instability in the thermodynamic approach. Also, the vector interactions among quarks is found to suppress unstable modes of all wave numbers. Moreover, the growth rate of unstable modes initially increases with the wave number but is reduced when the wave number becomes large. Including the collisional effect from quark scattering via the linearized Boltzmann equation, we further find that it decreases the growth rate of unstable modes of all wave numbers. Relevance of these results to relativistic heavy ion collisions is discussed.

Jet Hadronization via Recombination of Parton Showers in Vacuum and in Medium

We have studied the hadronization of jet parton showers based on the quark recombination model. This is achieved by letting gluons at the end of the perturbative shower evolution undergo a non-perturbative splitting into quark and antiquark pairs, then applying a Monte-Carlo version of instantaneous quark recombination, and finally subjecting remnant quarks (those which have not found a recombination partner) to Lund string fragmentation. When applied to parton showers from the PYTHIA Monte Carlo generator, the final hadron spectra from our calculation compare quite well to PYTHIA jets that have been hadronized with the default Lund string fragmentation. Modeling the quark gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions by a blast wave model, we have further studied medium effects on the hadronization of jet shower partons by also including their recombination with the thermal partons from the quark gluon plasma. We find that the latter leads to a significant enhancement of intermediate transverse momentum pions and protons at both RHIC and LHC. Our results thus suggest that medium modification of jet fragmentation provides a plausible explanation for the enhanced production of intermediate transverse momentum hadrons observed in experiments.

Light (anti-)nuclei production and flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Using the coalescence model based on the phase-space distributions of protons, neutrons, Lambdas and their antiparticles from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model, we study the production of deuteron, triton, helium 3, hypertriton, hyperhelium 3 and their antinuclei in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. The resulting transverse momentum spectra, elliptic flows and coalescence parameters for these nuclei are presented and compared with available experimental data. We also show the constituent number scaled elliptic flows of these nuclei and discuss their implications.

Mean-field potential effects on particle and antiparticle elliptic flows in the beam-energy scan program at RHIC

The elliptic flow splitting between particles and their antiparticles has recently been observed by the STAR Collaboration in the beam-energy scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In studies based on transport models, we have found that this splitting can be explained by the different mean-field potentials acting on particles and their antiparticles in the produced baryon-rich matter. In particular, we have shown that the experimentally measured relative elliptic flow difference can help constrain the vector coupling constant in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model used in describing the partonic stage of heavy-ion collisions. This information is useful for locating the critical point in the QCD phase diagram and thus understanding the phase structure of QCD.

Quarkonium formation time in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We calculate the quarkonium formation time in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from the space-time correlator of heavy quark vector currents in a hydrodynamics background with the initial nonequilibrium stage expanding only in the longitudinal direction. Using in-medium quarkonia properties determined with the heavy quark potential taken to be the free energy from lattice calculations and the fact that quarkonia can only be formed below their dissociation temperatures due to color screening, we find that $Υ$(1S), $Υ$(2S), $Υ$(3S), $J/ψ$ and $ψ^\prime$ are formed, respectively, at 1.2, 6.6, 8.8, 5.8, and 11.0 fm/c after the quark pair are produced in central Au+Au collisions at the top energy of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), and these times become shorter in semi-central collisions. We further show, as an example, that including the effect of formation time enhances appreciably the survivability of $Υ$(1S) in the produced hot dense matter.

Partonic mean-field effects on matter and antimatter elliptic flows

Using a partonic transport model based on the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, we study the effect of scalar and vector mean fields on the elliptic flows of quarks and antiquarks in relativistic heavy ion collisions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=7.7~$GeV and impact parameter $b=8~{\rm fm}$ that leads to the production of a baryon-rich matter. Although the scalar mean field, which is attractive for both quarks and antiquarks, reduces both their elliptic flows, the vector mean field, which is repulsive for quarks and attractive for antiquarks, leads to a splitting of their elliptic flows, and this effect increases with the strength of the vector coupling in the baryon-rich quark matter. Converting quarks and antiquarks at hadronization to hadrons via the quark coalescence model, we further study the dependence of the transverse momentum integrated relative elliptic flow differences between protons and antiprotons, lambda and anti-lambdas, and positively and negatively charged kaons on the strength of the quark vector coupling. These results are then compared with the experimental data measured by the STAR Collaboration in the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.
