Double ratio of charmonia in p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=5.02 TeV

Based on a kinetic description of J/psi dissociation and production in an expanding quark-gluon plasma that is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamics, we have studied the double ratio R_{p Pb}(psi')/R_{p Pb}(J/psi) of charmonia in p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=5.02 TeV by including not only the cold nuclear matter effects but also the hot nuclear matter effects. We find that the double ratio of prompt charmonia is significantly suppressed in the most central collisions as a result of the hot nuclear matter effects.

Heavy quark correlations and the effective volume for quarkonia production

Using the Boltzmann transport approach, we study the effective volume of a correlated heavy quark pair in a partonic medium based on their collision rate. We find that the effective volume is finite and depends sensitively on the momentum of the heavy quark and the temperature of the medium. Generally, it increases linearly with time $t$ at the very beginning and the increase then becomes slower due to multiple scattering, and finally it increases linearly with respect to $t^{3/2}$. We further find that the colliding heavy quark pair has an effective temperature similar to that of the medium even though their initial transverse momentum spectra are far from thermal equilibrium.

Effects of medium modification of pion production threshold in heavy ion collisions and the nuclear symmetry energy

Using the relativistic Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (RVUU) equation based on mean fields from the nonlinear relativistic models, we study the effect of medium modification of pion production threshold on the total pion yield and the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in Au+Au collisions. We find that the in-medium threshold effect enhances both the total pion yield and the $π^-/π^+$ ratio, compared to those without this effect. Furthermore, including the medium modification of the pion production threshold in asymmetric nuclear matter leads to a larger $π^-/π^+$ ratio for the $NLρδ$ model with a stiffer symmetry energy than the $NLρ$ model with a softer symmetry energy, opposite to that found without the in-medium threshold effect. Experimental data from the FOPI Collaboration are reproduced after including a density-dependent cross section for $Δ$ baryon production from nucleon-nucleon collisions, which suppresses the total pion yield but hardly changes the $π^-/π^+$ ratio. The large errors in the experimentally measured $π^-/π^+$ ratio prevent, however, the distinction between the predictions from the $NLρ$ and $NLρδ$ models.

Spin Asymmetry of J/psi in Peripheral Pb+Pb Collisions at LHC

By generalizing the statistical model for particle production to the spin degree of freedom of initially produced J/psi, we study the spin projection J_y of J/psi perpendicular to the reaction plane in peripheral heavy ion collisions at the LHC energy that leads to a strong, albeit of short duration, magnetic field. We find that for J/psis produced directly from charm and anticharm quarks in the color singlet state, like that in the Color-Singlet Model, their yield in the presence of the magnetic field is larger for J_y=0 than for J_y=1 or -1. This leads to a spin asymmetry of finally produced J/ψeven after including their final-state scattering in the produced quark-gluon plasma.

Probing isospin- and momentum-dependent nuclear effective interactions in neutron-rich matter

The single-particle potentials for nucleons and hyperons in neutron-rich matter generally depends on the density and isospin asymmetry of the medium as well as the momentum and isospin of the particle. It further depends on the temperature of the matter if the latter is in thermal equilibrium. We review here the extension of a Gogny-type isospin- and momentum-dependent interaction in several aspects made in recent years and their applications in studying intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions, thermal properties of asymmetric nuclear matter and properties of neutron stars. The importance of the isospin- and momentum-dependence of the single-particle potential, especially the momentum dependence of the isovector potential, is clearly revealed throughout these studies.

Hot medium effects on J/psi production in p+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02 TeV

Based on a kinetic description of J/psi dissociation and production in an expanding quark-gluon plasma that is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamics, we have studied the hot medium effects on J/psi production in p+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02 TeV. Including also the cold nuclear matter effects, we are able to reproduce recent experimental results on the nuclear modification factor R_{pPb}(J/psi) measured by the ALICE Collaboration. We have also made predictions for the R_{pPb} of J/psi and the double ratio R_{pPb}^{pro}(psi')/R_{pPb}^{pro}(J/psi) of prompt quarkonia produced in the most central 10% p+Pb collisions. We find that different from the cold nuclear matter effects, the R_{pPb}(J/psi) is slightly smaller than that in the minimum bias collisions, and the double ratio is significantly less than one at backward rapidity.

Gluon dissociation of J/psi beyond the dipole approximation

Using a nonrelativistic potential model, we calculate the cross section for the leading-order gluon dissociation of J/psi by including the full gluon wave function. We find that the resulting cross section as a function of gluon energy is reduced by about a factor of three at its maximum value compared to that calculated in the dipole approximation that is usually adopted in theoretical studies. The effect of the reduced cross section on the J/psi dissociation width at finite temperature is also discussed.

Elliptic flow splitting as a probe of the QCD phase structure at finite baryon chemical potential

Using a partonic transport model based on the 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and a relativistic hadronic transport model to describe, respectively, the evolution of the initial partonic and the final hadronic phase of heavy-ion collisions at energies carried out in the Beam-Energy Scan program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we have studied the effects of both the partonic and hadronic mean-field potentials on the elliptic flow of particles relative to that of their antiparticles. We find that to reproduce the measured relative elliptic flow differences between nucleons and antinucleons as well as between kaons and antikaons requires a vector coupling constant as large as 0.5 to 1.1 times the scalar coupling constant in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Implications of our results in understanding the QCD phase structure at finite baryon chemical potential are discussed.

Shear viscosity of neutron-rich nucleonic matter near its liquid-gas phase transition

Within a relaxation time approach using free nucleon-nucleon cross sections modified by the in-medium nucleon masses that are determined from an isospin- and momentum-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, we investigate the specific shear viscosity ($η/s$) of neutron-rich nucleonic matter near its liquid-gas phase transition. It is found that as the nucleonic matter is heated at fixed pressure or compressed at fixed temperature, its specific shear viscosity shows a valley shape in the temperature or density dependence, with the minimum located at the boundary of the phase transition. Moreover, the value of $η/s$ drops suddenly at the first-order liquid-gas phase transition temperature, reaching as low as $4\sim5$ times the KSS bound of $\hbar/4π$. However, it varies smoothly for the second-order liquid-gas phase transition. Effects of the isospin degree of freedom and the nuclear symmetry energy on the value of $η/s$ are also discussed.

Energy dependence of pion in-medium effects on π^-/π^+ ratio in heavy-ion collisions

Within the framework of a thermal model with its parameters fitted to the results from an isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model, we study the pion in-medium effect on the charged-pion ratio in heavy-ion collisions at various energies. We find that due to the cancellation between the effects from pion-nucleon s-wave and p-wave interactions in nuclear medium, the π^-/π^+ ratio generally decreases after including the pion in-medium effect. The effect is larger at lower collision energies as a result of narrower pion spectral functions at lower temperatures.

Free energy versus internal energy potential for heavy quark systems at finite temperature

Using the QCD sum rule with its operator product expansion reliably estimated from lattice calculations for the pressure and energy density of the quark-gluon plasma, we calculate the strength of the wave function of J/psi at the origin and find that it decreases with temperature above the transition temperature. This result is shown to follow exactly that obtained from the solution of the Schrödingier equation for a charm and anticharm quark pair using the free energy from lattice calculations as the potential and is in sharp contrast to that using the deeper potential associated with the internal energy, which shows an enhanced strength of the J/psi wave function at the origin. Our result thus has resolved the long-standing question of whether the free energy potential or the internal energy potential should be used in analyzing the spectrum of heavy quark systems at finite temperature.

Quarkonium formation time in quark-gluon plasma

The quarkonium formation time in a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is determined from the space-time correlator of heavy quark vector currents using the quarkonium in-medium mass and wave function obtained from heavy quark potentials extracted from the lattice QCD. It is found that the formation time of a quarkonium increases with the temperature of the QGP and diverges near its dissociation temperature. Also, the quarkonium formation time is longer if the heavy quark potential is taken to be the free energy from lattice calculations for a heavy quark pair, compared to that based on the more negative internal energy.

Jet Fragmentation via Recombination of Parton Showers

We study hadron production in jets by applying quark recombination to jet shower partons. With the jet showers obtained from PYTHIA and augmented by additional non-perturbative effects, we compute hadron spectra in e+ + e-collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. Including contributions from resonance decays, we find that the resulting transverse momentum spectra for pions, kaons, and protons reproduce reasonably those from the string fragmentation as implemented in PYTHIA.

Effects of initial state fluctuations on jet energy loss

The effect of initial state fluctuations on jet energy loss in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied in a 2+1 dimension ideal hydrodynamic model. Within the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD description of hard scatterings, we find that a jet loses slightly more energy in the expanding quark-gluon plasma if the latter is described by the hydrodynamic evolution with fluctuating initial conditions compared to the case with smooth initial conditions. A detailed analysis indicates that this is mainly due to the positive correlation between the fluctuation in the production probability of parton jets from initial nucleon-nucleon hard collisions and the fluctuation in the medium density along the path traversed by the jet. This effect is larger in non-central than in central relativistic heavy ion collisions and also for jet energy loss that has a linear than a quadratic dependence on its path length in the medium.

Charmonium production from nonequilibrium charm and anticharm quarks in quark-gluon plasma

Parameterizing the charm and anticharm quark momentum distributions by the Tsallis distribution, we study the nonequilibrium effect on the charmonium production rate in a quark-gluon plasma up to the next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We find that nonequilibrium charm and anticharm quarks suppress the charmonium production rate compared to that from equilibrated ones. We further show that the suppression factor calculated with the charm quark relaxation time, which has been frequently used in the literature, is close to our results.

Contributions of hyperon-hyperon scattering to subthreshold cascade production in heavy ion collisions

Using a gauged flavor SU(3)-invariant hadronic Lagrangian, we calculate the cross sections for the strangeness-exchange reactions YY to NΞ(Y=Λ, Σ) in the Born approximation. These cross sections are then used in the Relativistic Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (RVUU) transport model to study Ξproduction in Ar+KCl collisions at incident energy of 1.76A GeV and impact parameter b=3.5 fm. We find that including the contributions of hyperon-hyperon scattering channels strongly enhances the yield of Ξ, leading to the abundance ratio Ξ^{-}/(Λ+Σ^{0})=3.38E-3, which is essentially consistent with the recently measured value of $(5.6 \pm 1.2_{-1.7}^{+1.8})\times 10^{-3}$ by the HADES collaboration at GSI.

Effects of hadronic potentials on elliptic flows in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Within the framework of a multiphase transport (AMPT) model that includes both initial partonic and final hadronic interactions, we show that including mean-field potentials in the hadronic phase leads to a splitting of the elliptic flows of particles and their antiparticles, providing thus a plausible explanation of the different elliptic flows between $p$ and ${\bar p}$, $K^+$ and $K^-$, and $π^+$ and $π^-$ observed in recent Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC).

The effect of initial fluctuations on bottomonia suppression in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Using the screened Cornell potential and the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD to determine, respectively, the properties of bottomonia and their dissociation cross sections in a quark-gluon plasma, we study in a 2+1 ideal hydrodynamics the effect of initial fluctuations on bottomonia production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We find that while initial fluctuations hardly affect the yield of the 1S ground state bottomonium, their effect on that of excited bottomonium states is not small. Compared to the case with smooth initial conditions, the survival probability of excited bottomonia is reduced at low transverse momentum and increased at high transverse momentum. The observed suppression of the excited bottomonia relative to the ground state bottomonium by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaborations at an average transverse momentum can, however, be described at present with both smooth and fluctuating initial conditions.
