Transition density and pressure in hot neutron stars

Using the momentum-dependent MDI effective interaction for nucleons, we have studied the transition density and pressure at the boundary between the inner crust and liquid core of hot neutron stars. We find that their values are larger in neutrino-trapped neutron stars than in neutrino-free neutron stars. Furthermore, both are found to decrease with increasing temperature of a neutron star as well as increasing slope parameter of the nuclear symmetry energy, except that the transition pressure in neutrino-trapped neutron stars for the case of small symmetry energy slope parameter first increases and then decreases with increasing temperature. We have also studied the effect of the nuclear symmetry energy on the critical temperature above which the inner crust in a hot neutron star disappears and found that with increasing value of the symmetry energy slope parameter, the critical temperature decreases slightly in neutrino-trapped neutron stars but first decreases and then increases in neutrino-free neutron stars.

Analytical relations between nuclear symmetry energy and single-nucleon potentials in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter

Using the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, we derive general expressions for the quadratic and quartic symmetry energies in terms of single-nucleon potentials in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. These analytical relations are useful for gaining deeper insights into the microscopic origins of the uncertainties in our knowledge on nuclear symmetry energies especially at supra-saturation densities. As examples, the formalism is applied to two model single-nucleon potentials that are widely used in transport model simulations of heavy-ion reactions.

Isospin-dependent pion in-medium effects on charged pion ratio in heavy ion collisions

Using results from the chiral perturbation theory for the s-wave interaction and the delta-resonance model for the p-wave interaction of pions with nucleons, we have evaluated the spectral functions of pions in asymmetric nuclear matter with unequal proton and neutron densities. We find that in hot dense neutron-rich matter the strength of the spectral function of positively charged pion at low energies is somewhat larger than that of negatively charged pion. In a thermal model, this isospin-dependent effect slightly reduces the ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions that are produced in heavy ion collisions induced by radioactive beams. Relevance of our results to the determination of the nuclear symmetry energy from measured ratio of negatively to positively charged pions produced in heavy ion collisions is discussed.

Medium effects on charged pion ratio in heavy ion collisions

We have recently studied in the delta-resonance--nucleon-hole model the dependence of the pion spectral function in hot dense asymmetric nuclear matter on the charge of the pion due to the pion p-wave interaction in nuclear medium. In a thermal model, this isospin-dependent effect enhances the ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions in neutron-rich nuclear matter, and the effect is comparable to that due to the uncertainties in the theoretically predicted stiffness of nuclear symmetry energy at high densities. This effect is, however, reversed if we also take into account the s-wave interaction of the pion in nuclear medium as given by chiral perturbation theory, resulting instead in a slightly reduced ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions. Relevance of our results to the determination of the nuclear symmetry energy from the ratio of negatively to positively charged pions produced in heavy ion collisions is discussed.

Deuteron production and elliptic flow in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The hadronic transport model \textsc{art} is extended to include the production and annihilation of deuterons via the reactions $BB \leftrightarrow dM$, where $B$ and $M$ stand for baryons and mesons, respectively, as well as their elastic scattering with mesons and baryons in the hadronic matter. This new hadronic transport model is then used to study the transverse momentum spectrum and elliptic flow of deuterons in relativistic heavy ion collisions, with the initial hadron distributions after hadronization of produced quark-gluon plasma taken from a blast wave model. The results are compared with those measured by the PHENIX and STAR Collaborations for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}^{}} = 200$ GeV, and also with those obtained from the coalescence model based on freeze-out nucleons in the transport model.

Incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter

The incompressibility $K_sat(δ)$ of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter at its saturation density. Our results show that in the expansion of $K_sat(δ)$ in powers of isospin asymmetry $δ$, i.e., $K_sat(δ)$=K_{0}+K_{sat,2}δ^{2}+K_{sat,4}δ^{4}+O(δ^{6})$, the magnitude of the 4th-order K_{sat,4} parameter is generally small. The 2nd-order K_{sat,2} parameter thus essentially characterizes the isospin dependence of the incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter at saturation density. Furthermore, the K_{sat,2} can be expressed as K_{sat,2}=K_{sym}-6L-J_{0}/{K_{0}L in terms of the slope parameter $L$ and the curvature parameter $K_{\mathrm{sym}}$ of the symmetry energy and the third-order derivative parameter $J_0$ of the energy of symmetric nuclear matter at saturation density, and we find the higher order $J_0$ contribution to K_{sat,2} generally cannot be neglected. Also, we have found a linear correlation between K_{sym} and $L$ as well as between $J_{0}/K_{0}$ and $K_{0}$. Using these correlations together with the empirical constraints on $K_{0}$ and $L$, the nuclear symmetry energy $E_sym(ρ_{0})$ at normal nuclear density, and the nucleon effective mass, we have obtained an estimated value of K_{sat,2}=-370 +- 120 MeV for the 2nd-order parameter in the isospin asymmetry expansion of the incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter at its saturation density.

Transition Density and Pressure at the Inner Edge of Neutron Star Crusts

Using the nuclear symmetry energy that has been recently constrained by the isospin diffusion data in intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions, we have studied the transition density and pressure at the inner edge of neutron star crusts, and they are found to be 0.040 fm$^{-3}$ $\leq ρ_{t}\leq 0.065$ fm$^{-3}$ and 0.01 MeV/fm$^{3}$ $\leq P_{t}\leq 0.26$ MeV/fm$^{3}$, respectively, in both the dynamical and thermodynamical approaches. We have also found that the widely used parabolic approximation to the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter gives significantly higher values of core-crust transition density and pressure, especially for stiff symmetry energies. With these newly determined transition density and pressure, we have obtained an improved relation between the mass and radius of neutron stars.

Higher-order effects on the incompressibility of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter

Analytical expressions for the saturation density as well as the binding energy and incompressibility at the saturation density of asymmetric nuclear matter are given exactly up to 4th-order in the isospin asymmetry delta =(rho_n - rho_p)/rho using 11 characteristic parameters defined at the normal nuclear density rho_0. Using an isospin- and momentum-dependent modified Gogny (MDI) interaction and the SHF approach with 63 popular Skyrme interactions, we have systematically studied the isospin dependence of the saturation properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, particularly the incompressibility $K_{sat}(δ)=K_{0}+K_{sat,2}δ^{2}+K_{sat,4}δ^{4}+O(δ^{6})$ at the saturation density. Our results show that the magnitude of the high-order $K_{sat,4}$ parameter is generally small compared to that of the $K_{\sat,2}$ parameter. The latter essentially characterizes the isospin dependence of the incompressibility at the saturation density and can be expressed as $K_{sat,2}=K_{sym}-6L-\frac{J_{0}}{K_{0}}L$, Furthermore, we have constructed a phenomenological modified Skyrme-like (MSL) model which can reasonably describe the general properties of symmetric nuclear matter and the symmetry energy predicted by both the MDI model and the SHF approach. The results indicate that the high-order $J_{0}$ contribution to $K_{sat,2}$ generally cannot be neglected. In addition, it is found that there exists a nicely linear correlation between $K_{sym}$ and $L$ as well as between $J_{0}/K_{0}$ and $K_{0}$. These correlations together with the empirical constraints on $K_{0}$, $L$, $E_{sym}(ρ_{0})$ and the nucleon effective mass lead to an estimate of $K_{sat,2}=-370\pm 120$ MeV.

Nuclear modification factor of non-photonic electrons in heavy-ion collisions and the heavy-flavor baryon-to-meson ratio

The nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ of non-photonic electrons in ${Au} + {Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}^{}} = 200$ GeV is studied by considering the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons produced in a quark coalescence model. Although an enhanced $Λ_c/D^0$ ratio is predicted by the coalescence model, it is peaked at small transverse momenta ($\sim 2$ GeV) due to the large difference between heavy and light quark masses. As a result, the enhanced $Λ_c/D^0$ ratio, which is expected to suppress the electron $R_{AA}$ as the branching ratio of $Λ_c$ decay into electrons is smaller than that of $D^0$, does not lead to additional suppression of the electron $R_{AA}$ at large transverse momenta ($\ge 5$ GeV), where the suppression is mainly due to heavy quark energy loss in produced quark-gluon plasma. Also, the enhanced $Λ_b/\bar{B}^0$ ratio predicted by the coalescence model has even smaller effect on the non-photonic electron $R_{AA}$ as bottom baryons and mesons have similar branching ratios for semi-leptonic decays into electrons.

Constraining the EOS of neutron-rich nuclear matter and properties of neutron stars with heavy-ion reactions

Heavy-ion reactions especially those induced by radioactive beams provide useful information about the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, thus the Equation of State of neutron-rich nuclear matter, relevant for many astrophysical studies. The latest developments in constraining the symmetry energy at both sub- and supra-saturation densities from analyses of the isopsin diffusion and the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions using the IBUU04 transport model are discussed. Astrophysical ramifications of the partially constrained symmetry energy on properties of neutron star crusts, gravitational waves emitted by deformed pulsars and the w-mode oscillations of neutron stars are presented briefly.

Heavy baryon/meson ratios in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Heavy baryon/meson ratios $Λ_c/D^0$ and $Λ_b/\bar{B}^0$ in relativistic heavy ion collisions are studied in the quark coalescence model. For heavy baryons, we include production from coalescence of heavy quarks with free light quarks as well as with bounded light diquarks that might exist in the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma produced in these collisions. Including the contribution from decays of heavy hadron resonances and also that due to fragmentation of heavy quarks that are left in the system after coalescence, the resulting $Λ_c/D^0$ and $Λ_b/\bar{B}^0$ ratios in midrapidity ($|y|\le 0.5$) from central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV are about a factor of five and ten, respectively, larger than those given by the thermal model, and about a factor of ten and twelve, respectively, larger than corresponding ratios in the PYTHIA model for $pp$ collisions. These ratios are reduced by a factor of about 1.6 if there are no diquarks in the quark-gluon plasma. The transverse momentum dependence of the heavy baryon/meson ratios is found to be sensitive to the heavy quark mass, with the $Λ_b/\bar{B}^0$ ratio being much flatter than the $Λ_c/D^0$ ratio. The latter peaks at the transverse momentum $p_T^{} \simeq 0.8$ GeV but the peak shifts to $p_T^{} \simeq 2$ GeV in the absence of diquarks.

Constraining the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy with heavy-ion reactions and its astrophysical impact

Recent analyses of several isospin effects in heavy-ion reactions have allowed us to constrain the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities within a narrow range. Combined with constraints on the Equation of State (EOS) of symmetric nuclear matter obtained previously from analyzing the elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the EOS of neutron-rich nuclear matter is thus partially constrained. Here we report effects of the partially constrained EOS of neutron-rich nuclear matter on the mass-radius correlation, moment of inertia, elliptical deformation and gravitational radiation of (rapidly) rotating neutron stars.

Λ_{c} enhancement from strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma

We propose the enhancement of $Λ_{c}$ as a novel QGP signal in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. Assuming a stable bound diquark state in the strongly coupled QGP near the critical temperature, we argue that the direct two-body collision between a $c$ quark and a $[ud]$ diquark would lead to an enhanced $Λ_{c}$ production in comparison with the normal three-body collision among independent $c$, $u$ and $d$ quarks. In the coalescence model, we find that the $Λ_{c}/D$ yield ratio is enhanced substantially due to the diquark correlation.

Pressure isotropization of an equilibrating quark-gluon plasma

Pressure isotropization of an equilibrating quark-gluon plasma produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions is studied within the framework of a multi-phase transport model (AMPT). The time evolution of the bulk properties of the quark-gluon plasma is found to depend on its expansion dynamics and hadronization scheme as well as the scattering cross sections among quarks and gluons. It is further found that the pressure isotropy of the produced quark-gluon plasma can only be achieved temporarily, indicating that there is only partial thermalization during the time evolution of the quark-gluon plasma.

Recent Progress and New Challenges in Isospin Physics with Heavy-Ion Reactions

The ultimate goal of studying isospin physics via heavy-ion reactions with neutron-rich, stable and/or radioactive nuclei is to explore the isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions and the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter, particularly the isospin-dependent term in the equation of state, i.e., the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Because of its great importance for understanding many phenomena in both nuclear physics and astrophysics, the study of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy has been the main focus of the intermediate-energy heavy-ion physics community during the last decade, and significant progress has been achieved both experimentally and theoretically. In particular, a number of phenomena or observables have been identified as sensitive probes to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Experimental studies have confirmed some of these interesting isospin-dependent effects and allowed us to constrain relatively stringently the symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities. The impacts of this constrained density dependence of the symmetry energy on the properties of neutron stars have also been studied, and they were found to be very useful for the astrophysical community. With new opportunities provided by the various radioactive beam facilities being constructed around the world, the study of isospin physics is expected to remain one of the forefront research areas in nuclear physics. In this report, we review the major progress achieved during the last decade in isospin physics with heavy ion reactions and discuss future challenges to the most important issues in this field.

Nucleon and Delta resonances in K Sigma(1385) photoproduction from nucleons

The reaction mechanisms for $KΣ(1385)$ photoproduction from the reaction $γp \to K^+Σ^{0}(1385)$ in the resonance energy region are investigated in a hadronic model. Both contributions from $N$ and $Δ$ resonances of masses around 2 GeV as given in the Review of Particle Data Group and by the quark model predictions are included. The Lagrangians for describing the decays of these resonances into $KΣ(1385)$ are constructed with the coupling constants determined from the decay amplitudes predicted by a quark model. Comparing the resulting total cross section for the reaction $γp \to K^+Σ^{0}(1385)$ with the preliminary data from the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, we find that the most important contributions are from the two-star rated resonances $Δ(2000) F_{35}$, $Δ(1940) D_{33}$, and $N(2080) D_{13}$, as well as the missing resonance $N\frac32^-(2095)$ predicted in the quark model. Predictions on the differential cross section and photon asymmetry in this reaction are also given.

Thermal Charm Production in Quark-Gluon Plasma at LHC

Charm production from the quark-gluon plasma created in the midrapidity of central heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is studied in the next-to-leading order in QCD. Using a schematic longitudinally boost-invariant and transversally expanding fire-cylinder model, we find that charm production could be appreciably enhanced at LHC as a result of the high temperature that is expected to be reached in the produced quark-gluon plasma. Sensitivities of our results to the number of charm quark pairs produced from initial hard scattering, the initial thermalization time and temperature of the quark-gluon plasma, and the charm quark mass are also studied.

Determining the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy using heavy-ion reactions

We review recent progress in the determination of the subsaturation density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy from heavy-ion collisions as well as the theoretical progress in probing the high density behavior of the symmetry energy in heavy-ion reactions induced by high energy radioactive beams. We further discuss the implications of these results for the nuclear effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei.
