Isospin-dependent properties of asymmetric nuclear matter in relativistic mean-field models

Using various relativistic mean-field models, including the nonlinear ones with meson field self-interactions, those with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings, and the point-coupling models without meson fields, we have studied the isospin-dependent bulk and single-particle properties of asymmetric nuclear matter. In particular, we have determined the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy from these different relativistic mean-field models and compare the results with the constraints recently extracted from analyses of experimental data on isospin diffusion and isotopic scaling in intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions as well as from measured isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonances in even-A Sn isotopes. Among the 23 parameter sets in the relativistic mean-filed model that are commonly used for nuclear structure studies, only a few are found to give symmetry energies that are consistent with the empirical constraints. We have also studied the nuclear symmetry potential and the isospin-splitting of the nucleon effective mass in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. We find that both the momentum dependence of the nuclear symmetry potential at fixed baryon density and the isospin-splitting of the nucleon effective mass in neutron-rich nuclear matter depend not only on the nuclear interactions but also on the definition of the nucleon optical potential.

Elliptic flow of deuterons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Using a dynamical model based on the $NN \to dπ$, $NNN \to dN$, and $NNπ\to dπ$ reactions and measured proton and pion transverse momentum spectra and elliptic flows, we study the production of deuterons and their elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. The results are compared with those from the coalescence model. The deviation of deuteron elliptic flow from the constituent nucleon number scaling expected from the coalescence model and the comparison with the experimental data are discussed in connection to the allowed nucleon phase space in these reactions.

Charmed Exotics in Heavy Ion Collisions

Based on the color-spin interaction in diquarks, we argue that charmed multiquark hadrons are likely to exist. Because of the appreciable number of charm quarks produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at ultrarelativistic energies, production of charmed multiquark hadrons is expected to be enhanced in these collisions. Using both the quark coalescence model and the statistical hadronization model, we estimate the yield of charmed tetraquark meson $T_{cc}$ and pentaquark baryon $Θ_{cs}$ in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We further discuss the decay modes of these charmed exotic hadrons in order to facilitate their detections in experiments.

Equation of state of the hot dense matter in a multi-phase transport model

Within the framework of a multi-phase transport model, we study the equation of state and pressure anisotropy of the hot dense matter produced in central relativistic heavy ion collisions. Both are found to depend on the hadronization scheme and scattering cross sections used in the model. Furthermore, only partial thermalization is achieved in the produced matter as a result of its fast expansion.

Constraining properties of neutron stars with heavy-ion reactions in terrestrial laboratories

Heavy-ion reactions provide a unique means to investigate the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich nuclear matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$. The latter plays an important role in understanding many key issues in both nuclear physics and astrophysics. Recent analyses of heavy-ion reactions have already put a stringent constraint on the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ around the saturation density. This subsequently allowed us to constrain significantly the radii and cooling mechanisms of neutron stars as well as the possible changing rate of the gravitational constant G.

Probing the Nuclear Symmetry Energy with Heavy-Ion Reactions Induced by Neutron-Rich Nuclei

Heavy-ion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei provide a unique means to investigate the equation of state of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. In particular, recent analyses of the isospin diffusion data in heavy-ion reactions have already put a stringent constraint on the nuclear symmetry energy around the nuclear matter saturation density. We review this exciting result and discuss its implications on nuclear effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. In addition, we also review the theoretical progress on probing the high density behaviors of the nuclear symmetry energy in heavy-ion reactions induced by high energy radioactive beams.

Nuclear symmetry potential in the relativistic impulse approximation

Using the relativistic impulse approximation with the Love-Franey \textsl{NN} scattering amplitude developed by Murdock and Horowitz, we investigate the low-energy (100 MeV$\leq E_{\mathrm{kin}}\leq 400$ MeV) behavior of the nucleon Dirac optical potential, the Schrödinger-equivalent potential, and the nuclear symmetry potential in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. We find that the nuclear symmetry potential at fixed baryon density decreases with increasing nucleon energy. In particular, the nuclear symmetry potential at saturation density changes from positive to negative values at nucleon kinetic energy of about 200 MeV. Furthermore, the obtained energy and density dependence of the nuclear symmetry potential is consistent with those of the isospin- and momentum-dependent MDI interaction with $x=0$, which has been found to describe reasonably both the isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion collisions and the empirical neutron-skin thickness of $^{208} $Pb.

Constraining the Skyrme effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of nuclei using isospin diffusion data from heavy ion collisions

Recent analysis of the isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion collisions based on an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model with in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections has led to the extraction of a value of $L=88\pm 25$ MeV for the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density. This imposes stringent constraints on both the parameters in the Skyrme effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. Among the 21 sets of Skyrme interactions commonly used in nuclear structure studies, the 4 sets SIV, SV, G$_σ$, and R$_σ$ are found to give $L$ values that are consistent with the extracted one. Further study on the correlations between the thickness of the neutron skin in finite nuclei and the nuclear matter symmetry energy in the Skyrme Hartree-Fock approach leads to predicted thickness of the neutron skin of $0.22\pm 0.04$ fm for $^{208}$Pb, $0.29\pm 0.04$ fm for $^{132}$Sn, and $0.22\pm 0.04$ fm for $^{124}$Sn.

$ϕ$ and $Ω$ production in relativistic heavy ion collisions in a dynamical quark coalescence model

Based on the phase-space information obtained from a multi-phase transport model within the string melting scenario for strange and antistrange quarks, we study the yields and transverse momentum spectra of $ϕ$ mesons and $Ω$ ($Ω^{-}+\barΩ^{+}$) baryons as well as their anisotropic flows in Au+Au collisions at RHIC using a dynamical quark coalescence model that includes the effect due to quark phase-space distributions inside hadrons. With current quark masses and fixing the $ϕ$ and $Ω$ radii from fitting measured yields, we first study the ratio of the yield of $Ω$ baryons to that of $ϕ$ mesons as well as their elliptic and fourth-order flows as functions of their transverse momentum. How the elliptic and fourth-order flows of $ϕ$ mesons and $Ω$ baryons are related to those of strange and antistrange quarks is then examined. The dependence of above results on $ϕ$ and $Ω$ radii as well as on the strange quark mass is also studied.

System size dependence of elliptic flows in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The elliptic flows in both Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider are studied in a multi-phase transport model. For both collisions at same reduced impact parameter and minimum bias collisions, the elliptic flow of partons in Cu+Cu collisions is about a factor of three smaller than that in Au+Au collisions at same energy. The reduction factor is similar to the ratio of the sizes of the two colliding systems and is also related to the combined effects of initial energy density and spatial elliptic deformation in the two reactions. A similar system size dependence is also seen in the elliptic flow of charged hadrons from minimum bias collisions.

Anisotropic flow in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV

The anisotropic flow of charged hadrons in asymmetric Cu+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is studied in a multi-phase transport model. Compared with previous results for symmetric Au+Au collisions, charged hadrons produced around midrapidity in asymmetric collisions are found to have a stronger directed flow $v_{1}$ and their elliptic flow $% v_{2} $ is also more sensitive to the parton scattering cross section. While higher-order flows $v_{3}$ and $v_{4}$ are small at all rapidities, both $% v_{1}$ and $v_{2}$ in these collisions are appreciable and show an asymmetry in forward and backward rapidities.

Probing the equation of state of neutron-rich matter with intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions

Nuclear reactions induced by stable and/or radioactive neutron-rich nuclei provide the opportunity to pin down the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, especially the density ($ρ$) dependence of its isospin-dependent part, i.e., the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{\rm sym}$. A conservative constraint, $32(ρ/ρ_{0})^{0.7} < E_{\rm sym}(ρ) < 32(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.1}$, around the nuclear matter saturation density $ρ_0$ has recently been obtained from the isospin diffusion data in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions. We review this exciting result and discuss its consequences and implications on nuclear effective interactions, radii and cooling mechanisms of neutron stars.

A Multi-Phase Transport Model for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We describe in detail how the different components of a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model, that uses the Heavy Ion Jet Interaction Generator (HIJING) for generating the initial conditions, Zhang's Parton Cascade (ZPC) for modeling partonic scatterings, the Lund string fragmentation model or a quark coalescence model for hadronization, and A Relativistic Transport (ART) model for treating hadronic scatterings, are improved and combined to give a coherent description of the dynamics of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We also explain the way parameters in the model are determined, and discuss the sensitivity of predicted results to physical input in the model. Comparisons of these results to experimental data, mainly from heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), are then made in order to extract information on the properties of the hot dense matter formed in these collisions.

Nuclear matter symmetry energy and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei

Correlations between the thickness of the neutron skin in finite nuclei and the nuclear matter symmetry energy are studied in the Skyrme Hartree-Fock model. From the most recent analysis of the isospin diffusion data in heavy-ion collisions based on an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model with in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections, a value of $L=88\pm 25$ MeV for the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density is extracted, and this imposes stringent constraints on both the parameters in the Skyrme effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. Predicted thickness of the neutron skin is $0.22\pm 0.04$ fm for $% ^{208}$Pb, $0.29\pm 0.04$ fm for $^{132}$Sn, and $0.22\pm 0.04$ fm for $% ^{124}$Sn.

High-energy behavior of the nuclear symmetry potential in asymmetric nuclear matter

Using the relativistic impulse approximation with empirical NN scattering amplitude and the nuclear scalar and vector densities from the relativistic mean-field theory, we evaluate the Dirac optical potential for neutrons and protons in asymmetric nuclear matter. From the resulting Schrö% dinger-equivalent potential, the high energy behavior of the nuclear symmetry potential is studied. We find that the symmetry potential at fixed baryon density is essentially constant once the nucleon kinetic energy is greater than about 500 MeV. Moreover, for such high energy nucleon, the symmetry potential is slightly negative below a baryon density of about $% ρ=0.22$ fm$^{-3}$ and then increases almost linearly to positive values at high densities. Our results thus provide an important constraint on the energy and density dependence of nuclear symmetry potential in asymmetric nuclear matter.

A Transport Model for Nuclear Reactions Induced by Radioactive Beams

Major ingredients of an isospin and momentum dependent transport model for nuclear reactions induced by radioactive beams are outlined. Within the IBUU04 version of this model we study several experimental probes of the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Comparing with the recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion, we found a nuclear symmetry energy of $% E_{sym}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.05}$ at subnormal densities. Predictions on several observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities accessible at GSI and the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are also made.

Progress Towards Determining the Density Dependence of the Nuclear Symmetry Energy Using Heavy-Ion Reactions

The latest development in determining the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy using heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. Within the IBUU04 version of an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model using a modified Gogny effective interaction, recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion are found to be consistent with a nuclear symmetry energy of $E_{sym}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.05}$ at subnormal densities. Predictions on several observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities accessible at GSI and the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are also made.
