Barycenter technique for the higher order $Q$-curvature equation

Let $k\ge1$ be an integer, and $(M,g)$ be a smooth, closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $2k+1\le n\le 2k+3$, or $(M,g)$ be locally conformally flat of dimension $n\ge 2k+1$. Applying the Bahri-Coron barycenter method, we show the existence of a conformal metric with constant $Q$-curvature of order $2k$, or equivalently, the existence of a positive solution for the $2k$-th order $Q$-curvature equation involving the GJMS operator $P_{g}$. We only assume a natural positivity preserving condition on $P_{g}$ and do not suppose any condition on the sign of the {\emph{mass}} of $P_{g}$. In particular, we obtain existence without using a positive mass theorem.

Prescribed $T$-curvature flow on the four-dimensional unit ball

In this paper, we study the prescribed $T$-curvature problem on the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^4$ of $\mathbb{R} ^4$ via the $T$-curvature flow approach. By combining Ache-Chang's inequality with the Morse-theoretic approach of Malchiodi-Struwe, we establish existence results under strong Morse-type inequalities at infinity. As a byproduct of our argument, we also prove the exponential convergence of the $T$-curvature flow on $\mathbb{B}^4$, starting from a $Q$-flat and minimal metric conformal to the standard Euclidean metric, to an extremal metric of Ache-Chang's inequality whose explicit expression was derived by Ndiaye-Sun.

An optimal boundary control approach to the Cherrier-Escobar problem

We study an optimal boundary control problem associated to the boundary obstacle problem for the couple conformal Laplacian and conformal Robin operator on n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary and with n\geq 3. When the Cherrier-Escobar invariant of the compact Riemannian manifold with boundary is positive, we show that the optimal controls are equal to their associated optimal states. Moreover, we show that the optimal controls are minimizers of the Cherrier-Escobar functional, and hence induce conformal metrics with zero scalar curvature and constant mean curvature. Furthermore, we show the existence of an optimal control under an Aubin type assumption. For the standard unit ball, we derive a sharp Sobolev trace type inequality and prove that the standard bubbles-namely conformal factor of metrics conformal to the standard one with zero scalar curvature and constant mean curvature -- are the only optimal controls and hence equal to their associated optimal states.

Fractional Yamabe problem on locally flat conformal infinities of Poincare-Einstein manifolds

We study in this paper the fractional Yamabe problem first considered by Gonzalez-Qing on the conformal infinity $(M^n , [h])$ of a Poincaré-Einstein manifold $(X^{n+1} , g^+ )$ with either $n = 2$ or $n \geq 3$ and $(M^n , [h])$ is locally flat - namely $(M, h)$ is locally conformally flat. However, as for the classical Yamabe problem, because of the involved quantization phenomena, the variational analysis of the fractional one exhibits also a local situation and a global one. Furthermore the latter global situation includes the case of conformal infinities of Poincaré-Einstein manifolds of dimension either 2 or of dimension greater than $2$ and which are locally flat, and hence the minimizing technique of Aubin- Schoen in that case clearly requires an analogue of the positive mass theorem of Schoen-Yau which is not known to hold. Using the algebraic topological argument of Bahri-Coron, we bypass the latter positive mass issue and show that any conformal infinity of a Poincaré-Einstein manifold of dimension either $n = 2$ or of dimension $n \geq 3$ and which is locally flat admits a Riemannian metric of constant fractional scalar curvature.

Optimal control for the conformal Laplacian obstacle problem

We study an optimal control problem associated to the conformal Laplacian obstacle problem on closed n-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with n >2. When the Yamabe invariant of the Riemannian manifold is positive, we show that the optimal controls are equal to their associated optimal states and show the existence of a smooth optimal control which induces a conformal metric with constant scalar curvature. For the standard sphere, we prove that the standard bubbles -- namely conformal factor of metrics conformal to the standard one with constant positive scalar curvature -- are the only optimal controls and hence equal to their associated optimal state.

The Brezis-Nirenberg problem on non-contractible bounded domains of R^3

In this paper, we study the Brezis-Nirenberg problem on bounded smooth domains of R3. Using the algebraic topological argument of Bahri-Coron[2] as implemented in [6] combined with the Brendle[4]- Schoen[8]'s bubble construction, we solve the problem for non-contractible domains.

Optimal control for the Paneitz obstacle problem

In this paper, we study a natural optimal control problem associated to the Paneitz obstacle problem on closed 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. We show the existence of an optimal control which is an optimal state and induces also a conformal metric with prescribed Q-curvature. We show also C^{\infty}-regularity of optimal controls and some compactness results for the optimal controls. In the case of the 4-dimensional standard sphere, we characterize all optimal controls.

Cherrier-Escobar problem for the elliptic Schroedinger-to-Neumann map

In this paper, we study a Cherrier-Escobar problem for the extended problem corresponding to the elliptic Schroedinger-to-Neumann map on a compact 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary. Using the algebraic topological argument of Bahri-Coron, we show solvability under the assumption that the extended problem corresponding to the elliptic Schroedinger-to-Neumann map has a positive first eigenvalue, a positive Green function, and also verifies the strong maximum principle.

Leray-Schauder degree for the resonant Q-curvature problem in even dimensions

In this paper, using the theory of critical points at infinity of Bahri, we derive an exact bubbling rate formula for the resonant prescribed Q-curvature equation on closed even-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. Using this, we derive new existence results for the resonant prescribed Q-curvature problem under a positive mass type assumption. Moreover, we derive a compactness theorem for conformal metrics with prescribed Q-curvature under a non-degeneracy assumption. Furthermore, combining the bubbling rate formula with the construction of some blowing-up solutions, we compute the Leray-Schauder degree of the resonant prescribed Q-curvature equation under a non-degeneracy and Morse type assumption.

Variational theory for the resonant T-curvature equation

We study the resonant prescribed T-curvature problem on a compact 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary. We derive sharp energy and gradient estimates of the associated Euler-Lagrange functional to characterize the critical points at infinity of the associated variational problem under a non-degeneracy on a naturally associated Hamiltonian function. Using this, we derive a Morse type lemma around the critical points at infinity. Using the Morse lemma at infinity, we prove new existence results of Morse theoretical type. Combining the Morse lemma at infinity and the Liouville version of the Barycenter technique of Bahri-Coron[13] developed in [46], we prove new existence results under a topological hypothesis on the boundary of the underlying manifold, and the entry and exit sets at infinity.

Asymptotics of the Poisson kernel and Green's functions of the fractional conformal Laplacian

We study the asymptotics of the Poisson kernel and Green's functions of the fractional conformal Laplacian for conformal infinities of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We derive sharp expansions of the Poisson kernel and Green's functions of the conformal Laplacian near their singularities. Our expansions of the Green's functions answer the first part of the conjecture of Kim-Musso-Wei[22] in the case of locally flat conformal infinities of Poincaré-Einstein manifolds and together with the Poisson kernel asymptotic is used also in our paper [25] to show solvability of the fractional Yamabe problem in that case. Our asymptotics of the Green's functions on the general case of conformal infinities of asymptotically hyperbolic space is used also in [30] to show solvability of the fractional Yamabe problem for conformal infinities of dimension $3$ and fractional parameter in $(\frac{1}{2} , 1)$ to a global case left by previous works.

Candidates for non-rectangular constrained Willmore minimizers

For every $\;b>1\;$ fixed, we explicitly construct $1$-dimensional families of embedded constrained Willmore tori parametrized by their conformal class $\;(a,b)$\; with $\; a \sim_b 0^+\;$ deforming the homogenous torus \;$f^b$ of conformal class \;$(0,b).$ The variational vector field at $f^b$ is hereby given by a non-trivial zero direction of a penalized Willmore stability operator which we show to coincide with a double point of the corresponding spectral curve. Further, we characterize for $b \sim 1$, $b \neq 1$ and $a \sim_b 0^+$ the family obtained by opening the "smallest" double point on the spectral curve which is heuristically the direction with the smallest increase of Willmore energy at $f^b$. Indeed we show in \cite{HelNdi1} that these candidates minimize the Willmore energy in their respective conformal class for $b \sim 1$, $b \neq 1$ and $a \sim_b 0^+.$

Uniformization Theorems: Between Yamabe and Paneitz

This paper is devoted to several existence results for a generalized version of the Yamabe problem. First, we prove the remaining global cases for the range of powers $γ\in (0,1)$ for the generalized Yamabe problem introduced by Gonzalez and Qing. Second, building on a new approach by Case and Chang for this problem, we prove that this Yamabe problem is solvable in the Poincaré-Einstein case for $γ\in (1,\min\{2,n/2\})$ provided the associated fractional GJMS operator satisfies the strong maximum principle.

Isothermic constrained Willmore tori in 3-space

We show that the homogeneous and the 2-lobe Delaunay tori in the 3-sphere provide the only isothermic constrained Willmore tori in 3-space with Willmore energy below $8π$. In particular, every constrained Willmore torus with Willmore energy below $8π$ and non-rectangular conformal class is non-degenerated.

First explicit constrained Willmore minimizers of non-rectangular conformal class

We study immersed tori in $3$-space minimizing the Willmore energy in their respective conformal class. Within the rectangular conformal classes $\;(0,b)\;$ with $\;b \sim 1\;$ the homogenous tori $\;f^b\;$ are known to be the unique constrained Willmore minimizers (up to invariance). In this paper we generalize this result and show that the candidates constructed in \cite{HelNdi2} are indeed constrained Willmore minimizers in certain non-rectangular conformal classes $\;(a,b).\;$ Difficulties arise from the fact that these minimizers are non-degenerate for $\;a \neq 0\;$ but smoothly converge to the degenerate homogenous tori $\;f^b\;$ as $\;a \longrightarrow 0.\;$ As a byproduct of our arguments, we show that the minimal Willmore energy $\;ω(a,b)\;$ is real analytic and concave in $\;a \in (0, a^b)\;$ for some $\;a^b>0\;$ and fixed $\;b \sim 1,\;$ $b \neq 1.$
